Our Verdict

The Tempurpedic Active Breeze is a 13.00″ specialty mattress made of a combination of memory foam, poly foam, pocketed coils, and a support foam base. It is designed for sleepers looking for active heating and cooling with pressurized climate control.

The Tempurpedic Active Breeze is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm. On our firmness scale, this is a 6 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm.

This mattress has moderate sinkage and very low levels of bounce. It has a dramatic level of body contour, giving the Active Breeze a distinct memory foam feel. While this level of body contour and hug can be good for pressure relief, it is less ideal for responsiveness.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.74, ranking the mattress in the top 43% of all mattresses tested to date.

The Tempurpedic Active Breeze is $10,598 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 4.7X more expensive than the average mattress we’ve tested. The price is significantly higher than average, but it is also the only model we’ve tested with active heating and cooling built into the mattress itself (not a topper).

While the mattress is undoubtedly expensive, it also is a strong performer in key areas where it really counts, including cooling, pressure relief, motion transfer, and edge support, where it earned excellent or outstanding scores in all 4 categories. The areas performance struggles in are the same areas that most memory foam mattresses struggle, including sex and response time. So it’s less of an issue with Tempurpedic specifically, and rather memory foam mattresses more broadly.

In any case, the person this mattress is best for will heavily prioritize a memory foam feel with lots of hug, lots of contour, incredible pressure relief, and incredible cooling. If those are your priorities and you don’t mind giving up performance around ease of movement and sex then this mattress can be a good choice.

How is Tempurpedic Active Breeze Different?

The Tempurpedic Active Breeze is a 13.00″ specialty mattress with an overall performance level that is slightly better than average but with a price that is significantly higher than average. This mattress is over $9,000 more than the average mattress we’ve tested (comparing 470+ mattresses to date).

Advantages

Despite the high price, there are a number of real advantages with the Active Breeze. Advantages include better cooling performance, lower levels of motion transfer, better pressure relief, better edge support than average, and faster off-gassing.

These advantages cover five out of the eight performance categories that we test for.

Additionally, an advantage that isn’t fully captured by our scoring metric is the active heating and cooling technology in this mattress, as well as the other smart features built into the base.

Sleepers can choose between three cooling intensities and two operating modes. Temp-Curve automatically adjusts airflow throughout the night, while Constant Mode maintains a consistent cooling setting for up to 10 hours.

The system also features active bed warming for up to 60 minutes, along with dual-zone climate controls that allow each sleeper to customize their side independently.

Tempurpedic advertises a temperature range of up to 30°F between its maximum cooling and warming conditions.

Neutral Factors

Neutral factors include moderate levels of sinkage and very low levels of bounce. Low bounce is typical for most traditional Tempurpedic mattresses, which rely on a dramatic hug and an exacting feel.

Tempurpedic Active Breeze Sitting
Tempurpedic Active Breeze Sitting

If you enjoy that type of feel from your mattress, this could be a big advantage. But if you often feel “stuck” in a mattress, then the Active Breeze may not be the right feel for you.

Disadvantages

The biggest disadvantages of the Tempurpedic Active Breeze mattress include an extremely slow material response time, a below-average sex score (due to low bounce), and some red flags within the company score as well.

The Active Breeze has a relatively short, 90-night trial period, a relatively short 10-year warranty, and a $175 return fee if you end up not loving the mattress and want to send it back.

The price is also a huge disadvantage that is difficult to ignore if you’re comparing it to other mattresses without the ProSmart base.

Cooling Test

The Tempurpedic Active Breeze has outstanding cooling. During our tests, I did not experience any significant level of heat retention around my body.

Baseline Temp.

79.5° F

Max. Temp.

89.6° F

Ending Temp.

83.0° F

This mattress is absolutely packed with material and design choices that greatly improve cooling performance. First up with the biggest impact, there are two large fans built into the base.

Tempurpedic Active Breeze Foundation Air Vents
Tempurpedic Active Breeze Foundation Air Vents

Those fans connect to the mattress through two flexible tubes, which bring that airflow directly into the coil layer of the mattress. This brings an incredible level of airflow into the mattress, and it’s fresh, cooler air that’s constantly cycling, forcing any retained warmer air out of the mattress.

Max. Temp.

Ending Temp.

Tempurpedic Active Breeze After Cooling Test
  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

In addition, this mattress is equipped with a specialized cooling cover that creates a cool-to-the-touch feel on the surface of the mattress. The mattress maintained a cool feel for the duration of our tests. Lastly, we have the hybrid design itself, which also brings more air into the mattress.

In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 89.6° F. This is 0.7° cooler than the average of 90.3° F, based on all of our tests to date.

After getting off the mattress, the temperature declined by 3.0 degrees from minutes 0 to 1, which is 1.8 degrees less cool than the average 0 to 1 minute decline of 4.8 degrees.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Tempurpedic Active Breeze Heat Dissipation Chart

When we consider the combination of objective data, my subjective experiences, and an analysis of the materials, I’m confident in my view that cooling is outstanding.

Sinkage Test

The Tempurpedic Active Breeze has moderate sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 2.09″. This is 0.17″ less sinkage than the average sinkage depth of 2.26″, based on all of our tests to date.

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

The mattress creates a dramatic body-contouring hug. The Active Breeze has a classic memory foam feel with lots of hug, lots of contour, and incredible pressure relief. Tempurpedic uses specialized memory foam that creates an exacting hug around the precise shape of your body.

Tempurpedic Active Breeze Sinkage No Cover
Tempurpedic Active Breeze Sinkage No Cover

This feel helps to evenly distribute the body’s weight and deliver fantastic comfort. While the mattress created a moderate sinkage depth for our medicine ball test, I did also note that heavier parts of my body sank deeper into the mattress.

My butt and midsection in particular sank further down, while lighter parts of my body (arms, legs, feet) sank to a more moderate sinkage depth.

9.6

Motion Transfer Test

The Tempurpedic Active Breeze has a very low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 5.79 m/s². This is 34% less motion transfer than the average of 8.83 m/s².

Accel. Range

5.79 m/s²

Motion Duration

1.58 seconds

The lower motion transfer is a result of the thick memory foam comfort layers. Memory foam greatly absorbs and disperses energy, meaning bounce is significantly reduced on the mattress.

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.25 seconds. Motion begins to decline thereafter, but it is a more gradual decline.

By 1.58 seconds, we’ve returned to near-zero levels of energy, which is 0.66 seconds longer than the average motion duration of 0.92 seconds.

Motion Transfer Over Time

Tempurpedic Active Breeze Motion Transfer Chart

Given how low the motion transfer intensity is, I was quite surprised by the relatively long motion duration. That being said, while a longer motion duration certainly isn’t ideal, it’s also not something that I’m worried about in this case.

The Tempurpedic Active Breeze has an incredibly low level of motion intensity, and I expect this level of motion transfer will be more than satisfactory for most sleepers.

5.4

Response Test

The Tempurpedic Active Breeze has a very slow mostly recovered response time and a slow fully recovered response time.

Mostly Recovered

1.0 sec.

Fully Recovered

1.6 sec.

In our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 1.0 seconds, which is 0.58 seconds slower than the average of 0.42 seconds, based on all of our tests to date.

In our fully recovered responsiveness test, we measured a recovery speed of 1.6 seconds, which is 0.57 seconds slower than the average of 1.03 seconds. The slower material recovery speed is exactly what we expect from this type of memory foam. Tempurpedic, by design, uses high-density memory foam with a slow material recovery speed.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

From Tempurpedic’s perspective, this slow response is good because it’s part of the reason why the mattress feels the way it does, especially with respect to low motion transfer, body-contouring hug, and pressure relief.

While I do agree that the slower material recovery speed is a positive factor in those respects, it’s also fair to say that a slower responsiveness makes the mattress harder to move around on. In addition, it negatively inhibits sex performance and can create a “stuck” sensation for some sleepers.

Bounce Test

The Tempurpedic Active Breeze has a very low level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 5.19″. This is 3.41″ less bounce than the average of 8.60″, based on all of our tests to date.

Max. Depth

4.79″

Max. Rebound

0.40″

Total Bounce

5.19″

The lower bounce is a result of the memory foam design. Memory foam greatly absorbs and disperses energy. As a result, there is less energy that can be returned to the surface of the mattress as bounce. A lower level of bounce is a major reason why motion transfer is so incredibly low.

Max. Sinkage Depth

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

That said, the lower bounce does negatively impact ease of movement on the mattress, as well as negatively impacting sex performance. As a result, there are pros and cons worth considering.

9.2

Edge Support Test

The Tempurpedic Active Breeze has excellent sitting edge support and excellent lying edge support.

Max. Sinkage

3.50″

Lying Support

Excellent

Reinforced Edge

Yes

In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 3.50″. This is 0.32″ less sitting sinkage than the average of 3.82″, based on all of our tests to date.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

While lying directly on the edge of the mattress, I felt that the support was excellent in all sleeping positions. The Active Breeze is equipped with reinforced support foam running along the entire perimeter of the mattress. Said foam has a sizable positive impact on edge support for both sitting and lying.

Often, memory foam mattresses can struggle more with edge support, as the body-contouring of memory foam can weaken the supportive feel at the edge.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

That said, that wasn’t the case here. The Active Breeze hybrid design, good quality materials, and especially the reinforced perimeter edge foam help it to create strong edge support performance.

7.1

Sex Test

The Tempurpedic Active Breeze has fair sex performance. On the positive side, this mattress earned outstanding scores in 3 of our 5 testing categories, including noise, pressure relief, and cooling. The mattress is quiet and incredibly comfortable.

Tempurpedic Active Breeze Edge Sitting
Tempurpedic Active Breeze Edge Sitting

In addition, the Active Breeze earned an excellent score for edge support. In our edge tests, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 3.50”, which is notably better than average. A more robust edge helps extend the usable surface area of the mattress, which is beneficial for amorous activities.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce65%5.7Very Low
Edge Support20%9.4Excellent
Noise5%10Minimal
Pressure Relief5%10Outstanding
Cooling5%10Outstanding

Lastly, we need to talk about the one big negative: bounce. In our bounce tests, we measured a bounce height of 5.19”, which is considerably less bounce than average. A lower level of bounce makes sex more tiring, more strenuous, and less fun.

Unfortunately, one of the primary drawbacks of memory foam is worse sex performance, which almost always stems from a lack of bounce. To be fair, this isn’t a problem with Tempurpedic specifically, but rather a challenge with most memory foam mattresses.

If you want a memory foam mattress, you should be prepared for it to be less-than-great for sex.

10

Pressure Relief Test

The Tempurpedic Active Breeze has an outstanding level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt no significant pressure points on my body. Quite the contrary, this mattress is able to deliver incredible comfort.

Comfort Layer

4.50″

Support Layer

8.50″

The mattress is equipped with 4.5″ of comfort material, which is 0.12″ more comfort material than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.38″, based on all of our tests to date.

The Active Breeze uses Tempurpedic’s proprietary memory foam, which is incredibly dense and incredibly high-performance. Those foams create an exact, dramatic, and precise hug around the body. That hug alleviates pressure and creates evenly distributed weight across the body.

Tempurpedic Active Breeze Side Sleeping
Tempurpedic Active Breeze Side Sleeping

Notably, the Active Breeze uses a thin, non-quilted cover. That cover, in addition to creating fantastic cooling, creates a more direct and pronounced feeling and contact with the memory foam layers below. In my view, it’s a notable reason why this mattress delivers such an impressive pressure-relieving feel around the body.

When I consider our objective pressure mapping tests, material thickness, material quality, and my subjective experience on the mattress, I’m confident most sleepers will find the pressure relief to be outstanding.

9.7

Off-Gassing Test

The Tempurpedic Active Breeze had a strong smell upon the initial arrival. The mattress smelled for 1 day. This is 6.6 days shorter than the average smell duration of 7.6 days.

Initial Smell Strength

Strong

Off-Gassing Period

Notably, this mattress arrived uncompressed, but bagged. In my view, that is likely part of the reason why there was so little smell. Since the mattress is never compressed in a box, it has plenty of time to lose its smell before it arrives at your door.

Comparing 121+ brands tested to date, the average trial period is 240 nights, 128 nights more than Tempurpedic offers. The average warranty is 13 years, which is 3 years more than Tempurpedic offers. Additionally, this excludes the 43% of mattresses that offer lifetime warranties.

How firm is Tempurpedic Active Breeze?

The Tempurpedic Active Breeze is only available in a single firmness option “Medium Hybrid”. This is a medium-firm feel that we’d rate as a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm.

Firmness Chart

While many of the mid-tier Tempurpedic models offer multiple options (e.g., soft, medium, firm), the Active Breeze is likely limited by the design of its unique cooling system. Fortunately, the medium-firm feel is the most suitable firmness option for the majority of sleepers and sleeping positions.

Support & Sleeping Positions

Support on the Tempurpedic Active Breeze is outstanding. During our tests, I felt well supported in all sleeping positions. The mattress is equipped with an 8.5″ support layer. This is 0.52″ thicker than the average support layer thickness of 7.98″, based on all of our tests to date.

Support FactorData
Comfort Layer 4.50″
Support Layer 8.50″
Firmness Medium-Firm
Body Contour Dramatic

Reinforced Edge Yes

The best support comes from mattresses that evenly support the body, create neutral spinal alignment, and deliver fantastic pressure relief. The Active Breeze meets all of those support requirements without any issues.

Tempurpedic Active Breeze Back Sleeping
Tempurpedic Active Breeze Back Sleeping

This mattress is available in a single firmness, which we rated as a medium-firm feel. That’s a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm. This firmness works well for all sleeping positions and is appropriate for the vast majority of sleepers.

Check out the table below to see the sleeper weights and sleeping positions that would be best suited for this mattress.

In all mattress tests, we cut the mattress open to assess and measure the material quality. In doing so, I’m generally pleased with what we measured.

The memory foams measured between 2.76 PCF (pounds per cubic foot) and 4.43 PCF. The 2.76 PCF memory foam is a little south of what I want to see, but also not atypical for a topmost layer that’s designed to be a little softer. The 4.43 PCF memory foam is well within the “excellent” quality tier that I look for.

Tempurpedic Active Breeze Pressing Materials
Tempurpedic Active Breeze Pressing Materials

The poly foam in the core of the mattress measured in at 1.39 PCF, which is far from ideal. Even so, it’s only 0.5” of foam and it’s far away from sleeper bodies, so it’s less problematic. Lastly, the coil gauge measured at 17.0. That coil gauge is quite a bit thinner than is ideal.

Even so, it’s a relatively thin layer at just 2.50” and is designed more as an air gap layer, with the bulk of the support coming from the 6.0” of support foam on the base. Certainly, there are some layers that I’d like to see changed a bit and yet, it’s hard to complain too much.

Tempurpedic Active Breeze Relaxing
Tempurpedic Active Breeze Relaxing

When we consider the combined performance that this design and these materials are able to deliver, I can understand the choices that Tempurpedic designers made and why.

We’ll be running this mattress through our mattress durability tests soon. So be sure to check out that data set when it goes live. Based on all of my tests to date, an analysis of the materials, and my subjective experiences, I’m confident most sleepers will find support on the Tempurpedic Active Breeze is outstanding.

  • Adjustable leg, head, and lumbar
  • A sound bar to connect your phone via Bluetooth (can play music or other audio)
  • Lights that appear at the bottom of the frame for nighttime walking
  • Vibration massage at variable amounts
  • USB ports for charging

You can buy the Tempurpedic ProSmart Base separately to use with any mattress. There are four tiers that offer increasing features, up to the full list above. However, only purchasing the Tempurpedic Active Breeze will include the fan cooling system. If purchased separately, the ProSmart Base will not have these fans.

The adjustable frame is solid and measures about 3.50” (slightly taller) without the legs attached. The legs have variable height with 4 different sections. The variable legs let you make the mattress substantially shorter or taller, based on your preferences.

The design seems solid and able to provide complete support across the mattress.

Product Evolution

The Tempurpedic Active Breeze mattress was originally launched in 2019 and received an update in 2024.

The original version did still include the Active Breeze technology with ventilated materials and powered fans to circulate air through the mattress.

In 2024, Tempurpedic introduced the ProSmart Air adjustable base. This base provided dual-zone heating and cooling and full sleep tracking using AI integration. With these changes, the Active Breeze was positioned as Tempurpedic’s flagship climate control system.
