Our Verdict

Overall performance is solid on both brands. Casper’s more budget-friendly mattresses and Helix’s standard (non-Luxe / non-Elite) mattresses have more typical average performance. But, to be fair, they are also notably less expensive.

If you need to keep the budget in check it’s really a choice between Casper’s Original Hybrid and the Helix Midnight, Sunset, or Twilight (same basic mattress design, just different firmnesses).

Casper’s Snow Hybrid is the real standout performer from Casper and the highest scoring Casper mattress we’ve tested to date. If it’s within budget and you need a cooler feel, the Casper Snow is definitely our favorite.

Helix Luxe and Elite lines are significant upgrades over the standard Helix models. While the Elite is a better performer compared to Luxe, it’s also significantly more expensive. If budget is no object, then absolutely, go Elite. But for many sleepers the Luxe variant is going to be more than sufficient.

The greatest advantage to Helix is simply the wide variety of firmnesses, with options from soft all the way up to firm. Casper’s firmness range just isn’t as wide, with most of their models being medium to medium-firm.

Which Mattresses Are We Comparing?

Casper offers a mix of hybrids and foam mattresses. For the sake of simplicity, we’ve selected 3 popular Casper mattresses for this side-by-side comparison.

  1. Casper Original (foam)
  2. Casper Original Hybrid (hybrid)
  3. Casper Wave Hybrid (hybrid)

Helix offers 20 different mattresses, in varying firmnesses, although all have similar material composition. For this comparison, we’ll be looking at the three-piece quality tier—Standard, Luxe, and Elite.

Nearly all Helix collections (excluding Kids) are available in these three tiers. For this comparison, we’ve selected the Midnight collection, which has a medium-firm feel and would be our top pick for the most balanced feel.

  1. Helix Midnight (hybrid)
  2. Helix Midnight Luxe (hybrid)
  3. Helix Midnight Elite (hybrid)

Cooling Test

The cooling performance average is slightly higher on Helix mattresses (9.67) compared to the average on Casper mattresses (9.50).

The best cooling performance comes from the Helix Midnight Elite, which scored a perfect 10 in this category. The mattresses with the lowest performance include the Casper Wave Hybrid and the Casper Original, which both had a 9.0 cooling score.

  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (after 5 minutes) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

The Casper Original is an all-foam mattress so it’s not that surprising that cooling struggles a bit when compared to hybrid mattresses. But I would have liked to have seen better cooling from the Casper Wave Hybrid.

The Casper Wave Hybrid mattress includes a layer of cooling gel specifically designed for improving cooling, much like the Heat Delete Bands on the Casper Snow Hybrid. And the mattress has a high price tag to match.

Heat Delete Bands

For cooling performance, you’d be better off opting for the Casper Original Hybrid (for a score of 9.5 out of 10 and over $800 in savings*) or the Casper Snow Hybrid (which had a cooling score of 10 out of 10 and still a savings of over $400*)

* Savings based on queen-size mattress

All three Helix mattresses tested here had great cooling performance, with the Helix Midnight Elite taking center stage.

While all Helix mattresses are hybrids, the Midnight Elite takes it to the next level with a robust blend of cooling foams and micro coils. These materials work together to enhance cooling performance, giving it a perfect score—10 out of 10.

The Casper Original and Casper Original Hybrid both have less sinkage than average, as well as the Helix Midnight.

The Casper Wave Hybrid and Helix Midnight Elite have deep sinkage, significantly more than average.

The Helix Midnight Luxe falls somewhere in the middle with sinkage levels that are essentially average.

Deeper sinkage can be great for side sleepers or those looking for deeper hug and contour, while less sinkage may be better for back or stomach sleepers.

The level of sinkage for each mattress is documented in the images below.

Bounce Test

Casper mattresses have a narrower range of bounce (2.57″) compared to the bounce range on Helix mattresses (2.72″), but both brands offer moderate and high levels of bounce.

The mattress with the lowest amount of bounce is the Helix Midnight Luxe and the mattress with the highest amount of bounce is the Casper Wave Hybrid.

The average level of bounce is 9.64″, comparing all mattresses tested to date.

The Casper Original, Casper Original Hybrid, and Helix Midnight Elite all fall in the “moderate” bounce.

Bounce is more of a preferential factor and the “ideal bounce” varies between different types of sleepers.

The level of bounce for each mattress is documented in the videos below.

For lower levels of bounce, you may want to consider other all-foam mattresses by Casper. The Casper (6.53″) and Casper Select (6.93″) both have less bounce than the other Casper mattresses featured in this mash-up.

Edge Support Test

Casper barely outperforms Helix in terms of edge support, with Casper having an average edge support score of 9.83 and Helix scoring 9.5 (on average). Both brands offer very supportive options.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares.

Sex Test

This part of our scoring looks at the expected sex performance based on several performance factors.

The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.

These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score and from these factors, we can generate a sex score for each mattress.

Casper Wave Hybrid Edge Support Sitting
Casper Wave Hybrid Edge Support Sitting

On average, Casper is better for sex, with an average sex score of 9.8 while Helix has an average score of 9.6. That being said, all of these mattresses have pretty strong performance.

The table below shows how sex performance varies between Casper and Helix mattresses.

Sex TestSex ScoreBounceEdge SupportNoisePressure ReliefCooling
Casper Original9.8109.6109.09.0
Casper Original Hybrid9.79.610109.59.5
Casper Wave Hybrid9.9109.910109.0
Helix Midnight9.7109.09.09.59.5
Helix Midnight Elite9.79.510101010
Helix Midnight Luxe9.49.49.59.0109.5

If good sex is absolutely critical, you can’t beat the Casper Wave Hybrid, which earned a 9.9 out of 10. This mattress has high levels of bounce paired with great edge support as well.

The Helix Midnight Luxe has the poorest sex performance, which is really just a product of lower bounce levels and struggling edge support.

Pressure Relief Test

Pressure relief is an important part of how a sleeper engages with a mattress. Comparing Casper and Helix, Casper had a pressure relief average of 9.5 and Helix had a slightly higher average of 9.83.

Pressure Relief TestScoreComfort LayerSupport Layer
Casper Original9.03.5″7.0″
Casper Original Hybrid9.53.5″7.0″
Casper Wave Hybrid105.0″7.0″
Helix Midnight9.53.0″9.0″
Helix Midnight Elite106.0″10.0″
Helix Midnight Luxe105.0″9.0″

Again, we do see one outlier, the Casper Original which only has a pressure relief score of 9.0 despite having the same thickness of comfort materials as many other mattresses featured here.

For comparison, the average level of comfort material across all mattresses tested to date is 4.20″.

The Casper Original, Casper Original Hybrid, and Helix Midnight all have less comfort material than average. The Casper Wave Hybrid, Helix Midnight Luxe, and Helix Midnight Elite all have more comfort material than average (also the only ones scoring a 10 out of 10 in this category).

Off-Gassing Test

Off-gassing is strong on both Casper and Helix mattresses, but it dissipates significantly faster on the Helix models than it does on Casper.

Off-Gassing TestScoreInitial SmellOff-Gassing Period
Casper Original8.8Strong15 days
Casper Original Hybrid8.8Strong15 days
Casper Wave Hybrid9.1Strong11 days
Helix Midnight9.8Moderate2 days
Helix Midnight Elite9.5Strong6 days
Helix Midnight Luxe9.8Moderate3 days

The average off-gassing period is 5 days. All Helix mattresses are done off-gassing between day 2 and 6.

But with Casper mattresses, we’re seeing an off-gassing period that ranges from 11 days up to 15 days.

If you’re sensitive to strong odors, this could be an even bigger win for Helix.

Company

Although Casper and Helix have the same trial and warranty terms for their standard mattresses, Helix offers a longer warranty for the Helix Luxe or Helix Elite models.

The average trial length is 165 nights, which both Casper and Helix fall short of, but 100 nights is still over 3 months to decide. Both brands offer free returns if the mattress ends up not working out.

Casper Snow Logo
Casper Snow Logo

Regarding the warranty, only 26% of the mattresses we’ve tested (190 tested to date) have lifetime warranties. The average of the other 74% is 14 years.

By these metrics, the Helix Luxe and Helix Elite collections have a warranty that is 1 year longer than average. The Casper warranty is 4 years shorter than average (if we exclude the lifetime warranties from the data.)

Firmness

Looking at all available mattresses, Casper ranges in firmness from 4.5 to 6.5 out of 10 (if we include ALL available Casper models). Helix’s range is much wider, 3.5 to 8 out of 10.

If you’re specifically looking for a very soft or firm mattress, Helix will likely be the better fit since it has mattresses with that firmness.

For a medium or medium-firm feel, either the Casper or Helix could work.

Support & Sleeping Positions

Considering support, both Casper and Helix make supportive mattresses. Casper has all-foam and hybrid options while Helix focuses only on hybrid (foam with a pocketed coil base).

If you’re looking for something softer, the Casper Nova Hybrid (4.5), Helix Moonlight (3.5), or Helix Sunset (4) would be the best options. These mattresses would be a good pick for lightweight sleepers or those who sleep on their side and enjoy a bit more contour.

For a medium to medium-firm feel we have lots of options, including the Casper Snow (5), Casper Wave (5.5), Helix Midnight Luxe (6), and Helix Midnight Elite (5.5), among others (see the table above for full list).

For a firmer feel than the rest of the field, check out the Helix Twilight, which has the firmest feel, an 8 out of 10. This mattress would be a good pick for moderate to heavy-weight sleepers who prefer to sleep on their back or stomach.

Not sure which firmness is right for you?
