Best For
- Plush, pillow-top contour for side sleepers
- Excellent pressure relief
- Great cooling with hybrid design
Considerations
- Thicker 14″ profile
- Higher price point
- Faster response time could mean less contour for some sleepers
Our Verdict
The Helix Midnight Luxe mattress is a hybrid blend that seems to be the best of both worlds. It has a plush, tufted cover, good contour, and a medium feel, while also retaining a fast response time, good bounce, and exceptional cooling.
If you’re looking for a hybrid mattress that combines coils and foam for comfort and performance, the Midnight Luxe is a great option.

How is the Midnight Luxe Different?
The Helix Midnight Luxe mattress has a higher performance score than average, but also a higher price tag (compared to the average hybrid).
This mattress costs 35% more than average but also delivers heightened performance in a couple of different areas, like improved cooling performance, faster response time, improved edge support, and lower motion transfer levels.
It’s a 14″ mattress which is 2″ thicker than the average mattress. In many cases, thicker mattresses offer higher performance which aligns with what we see on the Helix Midnight Luxe.

Cooling Test
The Helix Midnight Luxe started with a temperature of 83.8° F.
After lying on the mattress for 15 minutes the surface of the Helix mattress was 91.0°. After 5 minutes with no one lying on the mattress, it reduced the temperature back to 86.6° F.

Heat Dissipation Over Time
On our cooling tests, the mattress never felt excessively warm. I was reasonably cool throughout the testing process. Our cooling data showed a mattress that did not get notably hot.
The hybrid design definitely helps with the cooling performance, however, the upholstered cover and memory foam top layers will sleep warmer than many other options.
The restrained level of sinkage keeps users from feeling enveloped by the foams, which also can improve overall cooling. These factors combine to help keep sleepers cooler during the night.
Sinkage Test
The results of this test showed that the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress has a moderate level of sinkage.
Our pressure point sinkage test revealed a maximum sinkage depth of 2.15″.
There’s a reasonable level of sinkage, but it’s certainly not excessive. The medicine ball showed 2.15”, which is on the moderate side.
However, when lying on the mattress I felt that the overall sinkage was fairly restrained.
The mattress has a ton of support, which is great for heavier-weight sleepers, but does mean that for lighter-weight sleepers the level of sinkage and contour is going to be less.
Motion Transfer Test
The level of motion transfer is documented in the video below.
Overall, the Helix Midnight Luxe has low levels of motion transfer.
Our accelerometer data below reveals the intensity and motion waves as they travel across the mattress.
Max. Acceleration
2.07m/s²
Min. Acceleration
-1.96 m/s²
Accel. Range
4.03 m/s²
The motion transfer of the Midnight Luxe is very low overall, as you can see in the data above. The max range of 4.03 is already among the lowest we’ve tested to date, but it’s especially low considering the hybrid design.
With coils in the construction of any mattress we would typically expect more. However, the combination of the upholstered cover and memory foam top layers does a great job at minimizing energy and motion.
Within 0.2 seconds the most significant motion has already dissipated.
Response Test
Within 0.3 seconds the Helix Midnight Luxe is mostly recovered from the weight of the ball. Even complete recovery still only takes 0.4 seconds. This is incredibly fast, especially for a hybrid.
Mostly Recovered
0.3 sec.
Complete Recovery
0.4 sec.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
These results show that the Helix Midnight Luxe has a very fast response time. The hybrid design and fast responding foams within the top layers work together to great effect to keep response time quick.
This fact helps ensure that sleepers never feel “stuck” in the mattress and that it’s easy to move around on the mattress and get in / out of bed.
Bounce Test
In the case of the Helix Midnight Luxe, the ball sank to a maximum depth of 4.4″ before rebounding upwards, achieving a max height of 3″ above the surface of the mattress.
Max. Depth
4.44″
Max. Rebound
3.03″
Total Bounce
7.47″
The level of bounce is documented in the video below.
The combined bounce range is 7.47″, which is pretty typical for what we’ve seen from other hybrid mattresses. With the Helix Midnight Luxe you can count on notably more bounce relative to memory foam and other all foam mattresses.
Max. Sinkage Depth
Max. Bounce Height
In my view, it’s sort of right in the sweet spot. Not too much, but not too little bounce. Too much bounce can create issues with motion transfer and a feel that’s just too bouncy. Too little bounce can result in a mattress that feels “dead” and is just hard to move around on (and not great for sex).
At 7.47″, the level of bounce on the Midnight Luxe is right where you want it to be.
Edge Support Test
Edge support from the data perspective is right in the sweet spot, capping out at 4” while sitting on the edge.
Max. Sinkage
4″
Lying Support
Excellent
Even when sitting / lying directly on the edge the mattress felt supportive. I did not feel any level of collapse or push to roll out of the bed.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs
Sitting, 200 pounds
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.
Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.
Compared to the Helix Midnight, the Helix Midnight Luxe has notably better edge support with only 4″ of compression (the regular Midnight has 5″).
Sex Test
The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.
These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score |
---|---|---|
Bounce | 60% | 9.4 |
Edge Support | 20% | 9.5 |
Noise | 10% | 9.0 |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 10.0 |
Cooling | 5% | 9.5 |
For the Helix Midnight Luxe, these individual factors generated a sex score of 9.4.
Looking at some of these individual factors, we can see that sinkage and cooling are fantastic on the Midnight Luxe.
Slightly less impressive, but still good, includes bounce, edge support, and noise.
While there are certainly mattresses with more bounce, including Saatva, Helix Moonlight, and the Winkbed, it’s hard to complain too much. The more restrained level of bounce on the Helix Midnight Luxe has comfort benefits that go beyond sex.
So while the bounce score holds sex performance down a bit, it’s not something I think most sleepers will find notable.
Pressure Relief Test
Overall pressure relief is excellent. However, I could see some lighter weight sleepers finding the pressure relief to be a little less than ideal.
Comfort Layer
5.0″
Support Layer
9.0″
The medium-firm feel, coupled with the super supportive nature of the mattress means that it doesn’t have a lot of easy give in the top layers of foam.
This is great if you weigh more than 150 pounds, but if you’re less than that you may find it doesn’t quite relieve pressure on the lighter sections of your body.
That said, for other sleepers I think the pressure relief dynamic is excellent. The material quality, material construction, and design are all top-notch and there’s no reason to believe this mattress will not deliver exceptional pressure relief to most sleepers.
Off-Gassing Test
The off-gassing of the Helix Midnight Luxe is pretty standard in terms of hybrid mattresses blended with memory foam.
Initial Smell Strength
Moderate
Off-Gassing Period
3 days
Upon initial unboxing, the spell was moderate and it took about three days of off-gassing before the smell had fully dissipated.
Company
The company score takes a look at factors that may influence your experience with the mattress.
Factors include length of the trial period, warranty, shipping / return costs, and country of origin.
Company Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Data |
---|---|---|---|
Trial Period | 25% | 9 | 101 nights |
Warranty | 25% | 10 | 25 years |
Shipping | 25% | 10 | $0 |
Returns | 25% | 10 | $0 |
Country of Origin | USA |
For the Helix Midnight Luxe, these individual terms and conditions generated a company score of 9.8.
Helix has been around since 2015 and their company terms and policies feel fair and favorable. They offer a 100-night trial period (with a 30-night break-in).
This “Break-In Period” is a 30-day window to allow for your body to get used to the mattress. In this window, you cannot be issued a refund or return the mattress. The 30-day window is the estimated time it takes for your body to get used to any new mattress.
If after the 30 nights you still don’t think Helix is right for you, you have some options.
- Option 1: Return the mattress and get a refund.
- Option 2: Return the mattress and replace with a different Helix mattress.
- Option 3: Request a free mattress topper from Helix. This is a good option if you want the mattress just a touch firmer or softer. If you receive the topper and the feel still isn’t right, you can still return the mattress (and keep the topper).

Here is some additional information about the specifications of the Helix Midnight Luxe.
Materials
So moving right along, let’s talk about the materials used in the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress.
There are six layers in the Helix Midnight mattress including:
- 2.0″ memory foam
- 2.0″ gel memory foam
- 1.0″ poly foam
- 8.0″ pocketed coils
- 1.0″ support foam
The Cover
The cover of the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress uses a plush pillow-top cover that is thick and provides good contour and sinkage. This is a contrast to the thin, stretchy cover on the regular Helix Midnight mattress.
The Comfort Layer
The comfort layer is made up of three separate material layers.
- Memory foam
- Gel memory foam
- Poly foam
Right below the cover is a layer of memory foam for pressure relief and contouring, followed by a cooling layer of gel-infused memory foam.
This gel layer is only found on the Luxe lineup, not the standard Helix mattresses, and provides extra cooling properties.
Directly below the gel is a sublayer of denser poly foam designed to provide support.
The Support Layer
Below the comfort layer is the supportive layer of coils. This layer includes hundreds of pocketed coils that move independently to provide pressure relief and support.
At the very bottom is a high-density foam base that provides support for the coils and foam layers above.
What about edge support?
Along the perimeter of the mattress, these coils are reinforced to improve edge support and limit motion transfer.
Product Evolution
When Helix first launched in 2015, it was originally designed to be a custom mattress supplier. Consumers would take a quiz on sleep preferences and personal specifications which would then generate a custom mattress firmness recommendation.
You could even specify each side of the mattress to meet the needs of different sleepers, which was pretty revolutionary for couples with different needs… and on a budget.
After years of doing business in customs, Helix realized that the majority of sleepers fell within a handful of different needs. Helix then dropped the 100% custom approach and launched 13 separate models.
If you know your firmness preference and sleep position, you can easily select the right mattress for you. And if you’re not sure, you can still take the Helix Sleep Quiz which will recommend one of their mattresses for you.

Other Mattresses to Consider
Like the look of the Helix Midnight Luxe, but not 100% sure if it’s the right choice for you? Check out a couple of other options below.
For Less Contour
Leesa Sapira Hybrid
Hybrid of Foam + Coils
The Leesa Sapira Hybrid uses a combination of foam and coils to provide comfort and support. Instead of the plush, pillow-top cover like on the Midnight Luxe, the Leesa Hybrid uses a thin cover.
For Memory Foam
Loom & Leaf
Luxury Memory Foam
Loom & Leaf is a true memory foam mattress and lacks the bounce of a coil hybrid. It creates more contour and pressure relief, but that’s also coupled with a slower response and slightly worse cooling.
For Bounce
Brooklyn Bedding
Signature Hybrid
The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid uses pocketed coil and layers of blended memory foam that has a faster response time, bounce, and cooling properties.

Compressed mattresses tend to adjust in feel as they fully expand and begin to relax. This alone can take some time. In addition, your body will take time to adjust. We recommend giving a new mattress a few weeks for your body to truly adjust before deciding if you love or hate a new mattress.
The warranty lasts 15 years on the Luxe version. The standard versions of the Helix only offer a 10-year warranty.
No. Right now, the only way to try a Helix mattress is to buy it (unless you happen to have a friend with a Helix!)
Yes. The comfort layer of this mattress includes memory foam, gel memory foam, and poly foam. A coil base makes this mattress a classic hybrid.
