Considerations

  • Higher price point for an all foam mattress
  • Deep sinkage

Our Verdict

The GhostBed Luxe combines memory foam, poly foam, and a phase-change cover for improved cooling, response time, and breathability. It offers many of the classic memory foam benefits, including excellent contour and pressure relief. However, the more advanced foam formulation also improves ease of movement and cooling, areas memory foam typically struggles with. Overall, this mattress has great performance and would be a solid choice for most sleepers.

How is GhostBed Luxe Different?

The GhostBed Luxe has a higher performance score compared to the average and is also slightly more expensive—23% more than average.

Advantages

Advantages include slightly improved cooling over the average as well as 10% less edge sinkage than the average we typically see. It also has a faster material response time, 42% less motion transfer, and a thicker comfort layer (1.3″ more) than average.

Neutral Factors

This mattress has 33% deeper sinkage as well as 11% more bounce than average. These factors are more preferential than good vs. bad, but certainly worth mentioning.

Disadvantages

The only disadvantages to note about the GhostBed Luxe are the slightly higher price and the shorter trial period.

Cooling Test

Overall cooling was excellent. The top cover definitely has a “cool to the touch” feel. According to Ghostbed, it’s a phase-change material.

What is “phase-change” material?

Phase-change materials are cool when you first lie down, but they will heat up over time. Even so, it does create an initial coolness each time you roll over / interact with a different section of the top layers.

Baseline Temp.

83.5° F

Max. Temp.

Ending Temp.

  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

In our cooling tests, it had a max temp of 89.7, which is among the lowest we’ve seen.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Heat Dissipation Chart Ghostbed Luxe

In addition, it seemed to dissipate heat fairly quickly once the person was off the mattress. The materials all seem to do a nice job at not excessively retaining heat.

The only mattresses I would expect would be notably better for cooling would be coil mattresses, some hybrids, and some latex.

Overall, this was excellent cooling performance for a memory foam-style mattress.

Sinkage Test

Sinkage was a little bit deeper than I had expected. We noted a 2.9” sinkage depth with our pressure point test.

Sinkage Depth

2.9″

Sinkage Feel

Very Deep

Ghostbed Luxe Sinkage Test

The cover of the GhostBed Luxe wouldn’t really be considered plush (which can sometimes cause extra sinkage) so nearly 3″ of sinkage is definitely going to be more than many other foam mattresses.

That being said, while lying on the mattress there was a high degree of hug and contour around the body, so sinkage didn’t necessarily translate to lack of support. On the contrary, this sinkage actually allowed for excellent pressure relief.

GhostBed Luxe sinkage

That said, the relatively high level of sinkage could be off-putting for some sleepers. Having a high degree of sinkage and hug can cause some sleepers to feel overly enveloped. In my view, it’s the type of feel that you either really love or really don’t.

10

Motion Transfer Test

Motion transfer plays a big role in mattress performance if you share the bed with a spouse, children, or even pets.

The level of motion transfer on the GhostBed Luxe is documented in the video below.

Motion transfer on the Luxe was low—pretty typical for what we have seen from most other all foam mattresses. It had a max acceleration range of 4.9 m/s².

Max. Acceleration

2.43 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-2.47 m/s²

Accel. Range

4.9 m/s²

When we dropped the ball you can see the big initial spike of motion transfer, but the motion quickly dissipated as the energy was absorbed into the body of the mattress.

GhodstBed Luxe motion transfer graph

Our data showed higher levels of energy for 0.6 seconds, after which energy dissipates to a negligible level. All things considered, the Ghostbed Luxe handles motion transfer extremely well.

10

Response Test

To look at the response time of the GhostBed Luxe, we look at two different values—the time for the material to “mostly recover” (about 80%) as well as the time it takes for “complete recovery” (100% recovered).

Mostly Recovered

0.2 sec.

Complete Recovery

0.3 sec.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

The response time on the GhostBed Luxe was extraordinarily fast, especially for this type of mattress. The entire mattress rebounds back to its original shape within 0.3 seconds.

Typically memory foam is going to perform slower, so we were pleasantly surprised to see how quickly it responds to the movements of sleepers.

The fast response time helps ensure that you feel less “stuck” within the deeper contouring hug of the Ghostbed Luxe. Slower-responding memory foam can cause difficulty for some sleepers to move and change positions during the night.

Bounce Test

Bounce was in an excellent range. It’s on the high end for what we’ve seen from other all-foam mattresses with a bounce range of 8.58”.

Max. Depth

5.48″

Max. Rebound

3.1″

Total Bounce

8.58″

It doesn’t quite reach the same level as what we’ve seen from hybrid and coil mattresses, but it’s not far behind.

The level of bounce is documented in the video below.

The bounce on the GhostBed Luxe is a bit higher than a classic memory foam.

Max. Sinkage Depth

This gives it a more traditional feel and may help to make the Ghostbed a good transitional mattress for sleepers looking to make the leap from coil and other innerspring-styled mattresses.

9.6

Edge Support Test

Edge support was good, but not great. In our tests, the quantifiable numbers indicate great edge support, but our subjective assessment left something to be desired.

Lying Support

Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Speaking subjectively, I didn’t feel as well supported on the absolute edge while sitting and lying as I have with other similar mattresses.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Side sleeping on the GhostBed Luxe

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

Again, it’s not bad, just not quite as good as I would have hoped for. It wasn’t a complete collapse or ejecting me from the bed while lying near the edge. Just not great as I like to see.

9.6

Sex Test

The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.

These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce60%9.6Moderate
Edge Support20%9.6Excellent
Noise10%10Minimal
Pressure Relief5%9.5Excellent
Cooling5%9.5Excellent

For the GhostBed Luxe, these individual factors generated a sex score of 9.6.

Some of the top factors it has going for it include noise and cooling. This mattress is all foam so there’s basically no noise to take into consideration. And as for cooling, the phase-change cover and cooling fiber material impact the surface cooling, allowing sleepers to doze more comfortably.

Ghostbed Luxe Stomach Sleeping

Sinkage is the biggest disadvantage of sexy time on the Ghostbed Luxe. It sinks a little more than what many people would want. With the weight of two persons on / near each other this could create excessive compression and a deeper envelopment within the foams.

9.5

Pressure Relief Test

Pressure relief is an important part of any mattress. We look at comfort layer, overall mattress thickness, in addition to completing our subjective assessment to determine scoring in this category.

Comfort Layer

5.5″

Support Layer

7.5″

Pressure relief was excellent overall. The materials allow for a higher degree of sinkage, hug, and contour, all of which combine to deliver excellent pressure relief.

9.6

Off-Gassing Test

The GhostBed Luxe had a pretty strong smell upon the initial unboxing. This is not that uncommon for compressed memory foam.

Initial Smell Strength

Strong

Off-Gassing Period

5 days

It took about 5 full days before the GhostBed had completely off-gassed. In general, this is a bit longer than what we’ve seen from many other mattresses we’ve tested. That being said, once off-gassing is complete, the mattress should not have a strong smell so it’s kind of a ‘one and done’ sort of an issue.

9.8

Company

The company score takes a look at factors that may influence your experience with the mattress.

Factors include length of the trial period, warranty, shipping / return costs, and country of origin.

GhostBed, as a company, has been around since 2015 and has a pretty good track record of customer service and quality. They offer a 101-night trial period with a 25-year warranty that is longer than usual for most foam-based mattresses.

Shipping is free (within the 48 continental states) and returns are free (one per household).

Returns are required to abide by the 30-night break-in period, a set amount of time for your body to get used to the mattress. GhostBed does not allow return requests until this time period has passed, which is pretty common.

How firm is GhostBed Luxe?

The GhostBed Luxe mattress is around a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale—a true medium.

Materials

The GhostBed Luxe is an all-foam mattress that uses a phase-change cover and gel-infused foam to provide cooling, contour, and comfort.

Although it uses a blend of memory foam and poly foam, it feels more like a classic memory foam. It has good contouring, hug, pressure relief, and deep compression.

But at the same time, it offers good cooling and a fast response time… features that are not always present with memory foam.

Here is a complete list of the layered materials on the Luxe:

  • 2.0″ memory foam
  • 2.0″ poly foam
  • 7.5″ support foam
GhostBed Luxe material layers

The Cover

The cover of the GhostBed Luxe is a soft, phase-change material, designed to react to your body’s heat and help you stay cool. There is an additional 1″ layer of cooling fiber and 1″ layer of gel memory foam upholstered within the cover that helps promote cooling as well.

GhostBed Luxe cover

The Comfort Layers

The comfort layer is made up of two foam layers. First is a 2.0″ gel-infused memory foam. This layer focuses on cooling as well as contouring, hug, and pressure relief.

Below the memory foam is a 2.0″ layer of poly foam, which is a little denser. It works with the top 2.0″ layer to create excellent pressure relief and contour, while transitioning sleepers into the foundational support layer.

The Support Layer

The bottom layer is a support layer that is simply designed to support the foam above. Heavier sleepers may interact more with this layer which could cause pressure relief issues.

Product Evolution

GhostBed first launched in 2015 and hit the market with one mattress, the GhostBed Classic.

The original Ghostbed mattress design shared some similarities with the Ghostbed Luxe, but also differed notably. The original Ghostbed was a 1.5″ Dunlop latex with a 2.0″ memory foam core and a 7.5″ support foam base.

The Ghostbed Luxe launched in late 2017. It built on the original design of the Classic Ghostbed, but brought memory foam to the top layer, a poly foam to the core, and added a number of other cooling improvements.
