Our Verdict

In the matchup of Saatva vs. Tempurpedic, these two brands go head-to-head as two luxury mattress names.

Saatva specializes in coil-based mattresses, with a coil-on-coil classic mattress as well as a hybrid mattress that combines coils and foam. Saatva has a luxury feel with a plush, Euro cover, and high-quality materials

Tempurpedic specializes in luxury memory foam, but offers some hybrid options as well. They have three primary collections: TEMPUR-Cloud, TEMPUR-Adapt, or the TEMPUR-breeze.

Best CompanySaatvaLonger trial

For the best overall, Saatva Classic takes gold here, with a score of 9.95 out of 10. This is tied with the top-scoring mattresses we’ve tested to date.

What mattress has the best cooling?

For best cooling, Saatva takes the win here too. Even though Tempurpedic does offer hybrid options, the Tempurpedic mattress tested in this comparison is an all-foam. In 9 out of 10 cases, a hybrid will always be cooler than an all-foam mattress—this is especially true for memory foam.

What mattress has the deepest level of sinkage?

The mattress with the most sinkage was the Saatva Classic at 2.4″. This is likely due to the plusher cover and deeper hug within the top layer.

The Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze had only 1.46″ of sinkage, a full inch less than the Saatva.

What mattress had the lowest level of motion transfer?

Being 100% foam, the Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze had the lowest level of motion transfer, as coils are notorious for adding a little bounce and motion.

What mattress had the fastest response time?

For the fastest response time, the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid really stands out with a response time of 0.3 seconds. Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze isn’t hugely far behind at 0.8 seconds, so it’s likely that the Tempurpedic hybrids would be faster.

What mattress has the most bounce?

While bounce is a preferential favor and not inherently good or bad, the Saatva Classic has the most bounce—almost 3X the amount of bounce we saw on the Tempurpedic mattress.

What mattress has the best edge support?

For the best edge support, Saatva Classic took the win here again, with only 3.0″ when sitting directly at the edge. This is twice as good as the Tempurpedic mattress which had 6.0″ of sinkage at the edge.

What mattress is best for sex?

Having high bounce, excellent edge support, good pressure relief, and fantastic cooling, the Saatva Classic is the best option for good sex performance. This mattress is active and engaging, with a nice balance of activity and comfort.

What mattress has the best pressure relief?

All of these mattresses have great pressure relief, but the Saatva Classic and Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze stand out due to their thicker comfort layers and plush covers.

Cooling Test

Looking at the cooling performance of these mattresses, Saatva took the win with the highest score.

Cooling TestScoreBaselineMax TempEnding Temp

Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid1078.0°89.4°81.3°
Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze9.080.8°96.5°90.6°

Saatva has just really mastered the way to have a plush, Euro cover, foam comfort layer, and a coil base.

I’ve said it before, but let me reiterate—coils are king when it comes to cooling. A coil mattress will almost always be cooler than an all-foam mattress.

Mattress TypeCooling Performance
All coilBest

The Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze is an all-foam mattress, and memory foam at that, which is often one of the most heat-retentive foams you can have.

Sinkage Test

With sinkage, there’s a wide range between these three mattresses.

Sinkage TestSinkage DepthMax Sinkage
Saatva ClassicDeep2.40″
Saatva Memory Foam HybridMinimal1.88″
Tempurpedic Cloud BreezeVery Minimal1.46″

For reference, the average level of sinkage across all mattresses tested to date is 2.20″.

Tempurpedic has the least amount of sinkage at 1.46″ and Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid is not far behind at 1.88″. Considering the average, both of these mattresses have less sinkage than the average.

The Saatva Classic has deep sinkage, 2.40″, which is more sinkage than the average.

Images below show the level of sinkage for each mattress.

Saatva Classic

Saatva Classic sinkage

Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid

Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid sinkage test

Tempurpedic

Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze sinkage

Sinkage is a preferential factor in many respects, as neither minimal nor deep sinkage is inherently good or bad. Generally, side sleepers enjoy a bit more sinkage, and back or stomach sleepers like a bit less.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer showed some separation between Saatva and Tempurpedic, with a range of performance scores.

Motion Transfer TestScoreAcc. Range
Saatva Classic9.85.86 m/s²
Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid8.710.11 m/s²
Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze105.17 m/s²

The average amount of motion transfer, based on all of our tests to date, is 5.83 m/s².

The Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze was the only mattress to score better than average in this category, with an acceleration range of 5.17 m/s².

The Saatva Classic was about average with 5.86 m/s².

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid was surprising as it generated over 2X the level of motion transfer compared to the average. This is despite the fact that the Saatva Classic uses more coils (which typically generate more bounce).

The videos below show how motion is transferred across each mattress.

Saatva Classic Motion Transfer

Saatva motion transfer graph

On the Saatva Classic, motion transfer deviates a lot after the initial drop. It’s the coils in this mattress that allow motion to travel around instead of absorbing it immediately (like on an all-foam mattress).

Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Motion Transfer

Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid motion transfer chart
Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid motion transfer chart

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid had very high levels of motion. Energy levels at the initial drop were over 2X the level we saw on the Tempurpedic.

Tempurpedic Motion Transfer

Tempurpedic motion transfer graph
Tempurpedic motion transfer chart

The Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze mattress has a very different motion pattern than Saatva. While there is energy from the initial ball drop, look at the chart. The energy peaks at only 2 m/s², about 50% the level peak for either of the Saatvas.

As time elapses, you can see how energy rounds out and is gradually eliminated altogether.

Response Test

Both Saatva and Tempurpedic have good response times, but Saatva is faster on both of their mattresses.

Response TestScoreMostly RecoveredCompletely Recovered
Saatva Classic100.4 seconds0.8 seconds
Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid100.3 seconds1.0 seconds
Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze9.70.8 seconds1.2 seconds

The average response time across all mattresses that we’ve tested to date is 0.56 seconds to be mostly recovered and 0.94 seconds to be fully recovered.

The Saatva Classic takes 0.4 seconds to recover (2nd fastest), but we saw a full recovery by 0.8 seconds (1st fastest). The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid performance was very similar, being mostly recovered by 0.3 seconds (1st fastest) and fully recovered by 1.0 second (2nd fastest)

The Tempurpedic mattress was slower in both categories (mostly recovered and fully recovered). As mentioned above, this is likely due to the all-foam construction of the Tempurpedic.

If you opt for one of the medium hybrid models, like the TEMPUR-Cloud, TEMPUR-Adapt, or the TEMPUR-breeze response time would likely be faster.

You can see these material responses in real time in the video below.

Bounce Test

Bounce has a wide range between Saatva and Tempurpedic, but overall, Saatva has very high bounce and Tempurpedic has very low bounce.

Bounce TestBounce HeightBounce Range
Saatva ClassicExtremely High14.67″
Saatva Memory Foam HybridExtremely High14.06″
Tempurpedic Cloud BreezeVery Low5.06″

The average amount of bounce across all mattresses tested to date is 9.35″.

The Tempurpedic all-foam mattress has about 50% of the average bounce, at only 5.06″.

And Saatva is 150% more than the average bounce, with over 14″ of bounce on both their Saatva Classic and Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid.

Bounce levels can also be viewed in real time via the short video clips below.

Edge Support Test

On Saatva, edge support was exceptional on both the Saatva Classic and the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid. Tempurpedic definitely struggled in this category.

Edge Support TestScoreMax SinkageLying Support
Saatva Classic103.00″Exceptional
Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid9.83.50″Exceptional
Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze8.56.00″Fair

The average level of sinkage (when sitting right at the edge of the mattress) is 4.67″.

Both Saatva mattresses, the Saatva Classic and Memory Foam Hybrid did fantastic with only 3-3.5″ of sinkage at the edge and exceptional lying support.

The Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze had a whopping 6.0″ of edge sinkage and only fair lying performance.

Compared to the Tempurpedic, Saatva had 50% of the amount of edge sinkage. Unlike regular sinkage which can be preferential, more edge sinkage is almost always going to equal poorer edge performance.

You can see the difference in the images below. Look specifically at the point where the mattress and the leg meet.

Sex Test

Our sex rating formula looks at 5 different factors weighted based on their importance.

sex percent chart

All factors are not equal in terms of significance, but each plays an important role.

Here’s a look at the numerical breakdown of each factor:

sex formula

We use the scores from all factors, plugged into the formula, to derive a sex score for each mattress.

Between Saatva vs. Tempurpedic, Saatva is the clear winner here.

Sex TestSex ScoreBounceEdge SupportNoisePressure ReliefCooling
Saatva Classic9.910109.01010
Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid9.8109.89.09.510
Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze8.98.88.510109.0

This sweeping win comes down to one huge difference between Saatva and Tempurpedic—coils. Among these three models compared in this review, Saatva uses coils and the Tempurpedic does not.

Saatva coils help provide more bounce, great edge support, and excellent cooling which all contribute to better sex.

Now is this to say that if you like the feel of Tempurpedic, you are destined for mediocre sex for all of your days? Of course not.

If you’re concerned with sex performance, but like their foams or have brand loyalty or whatever the case is, opt for one of Tempurpedic’s hybrid options. This would include the medium firmness of either the TEMPUR-Adapt or TEMPUR-breeze collection.

Note: Soft and firm firmnesses are not available in a hybrid configuration.

Pressure Relief Test

Moving right along, let’s talk about pressure relief. In our tests, all three of these mattresses had excellent pressure relief—great scores across the board.

Pressure Relief TestScoreComfort LayerSupport Layer
Saatva Classic104.5″7.0″
Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid9.52.5″9.0″
Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze104.0″7.5″

Wondering why these mattresses excel where other mattresses struggle? One of the biggest contributing factors is the thickness of the comfort layer.

Thinner comfort layers can cause painful pressure points or uneven weight distribution. Ideally, I like to see at least 3″ of comfort material for optimal pressure relief (with 4.0″ or more being better).

Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze material layers
Memory foam layers within the Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze

Both the Saatva Classic and the Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze have 4.0″ of comfort foam followed by a 7-7.5″ support layer. This is a great composition of materials and I could really feel the difference in the performance tests.

But what about the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid? This mattress also earned a 9.5 score, which is interesting considering it only has 2.5″ of comfort material. On this mattress, the plush Euro-cover really enhances the performance and helps make up for the thinner comfort layer thickness.

Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid foam cutout
Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid foam cutout

The result is a hybrid option that plays up the best parts of both foam and coils for great pressure relief between the two materials.

Off-Gassing Test

Concerning off-gassing, Saatva wins this category, but it’s not by a huge margin.

Off-Gassing TestScoreInitial SmellOff-Gassing Period
Saatva Classic10None0 days
Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid10None0 days
Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze9.8Moderate3 days

Saatva ships uncompressed so it arrived with zero off-gassing odor. Tempurpedic has a bit more variation. The TEMPUR-Cloud is the only collection that also ships compressed

What is off-gassing?

Off-gassing is the process that happens when fumes are released by the mattress after unboxing. The average off-gassing period is about 2.8 days (across all mattresses that we’ve tested to date).

Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze compression
Tempurpedic TEMPUR foam

The Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze is right at the average. I would estimate that the TEMPUR-Adapt or TEMPUR-breeze mattress collections would off-gas faster since they ship uncompressed.

Company

Looking at Saatva vs. Tempurpedic at a company level, Saatva is the clear winner.

CompanySaatvaTempurpedic

Saatva beats Tempurpedic in 3 major categories:

  • Trial period
  • Warranty
  • Return cost

Saatva offers a 365-night trial period, but Tempurpedic only offers 90 nights. And Saatva backs their mattress for life, but Tempurpedic only provides a 10-year limited warranty.

Shipping is free initially on both brands, but if things don’t work out, you’ll need to pay a fee to ship it back. The difference is the amount.

  • Saatva return fee: $99
  • Tempurpedic return fee: $175

Firmness

Saatva and Tempurpedic offer a range of firmness including soft, medium or firm. The chart below shows the available firmnesses.

For additional firmness options, the Saatva Classic, TEMPUR Adapt, and TEMPUR-breeze are available in soft, medium, or firm.

I’ll also note here again that the TEMPUR-Adapt and TEMPUR-breeze in the medium firmness are available as an all-foam mattress or as a hybrid.

Support & Sleeping Positions

Both Saatva and Tempurpedic offer firmnesses that fall in a range that would be suitable for a wide range of sleepers. If you’re not sure which firmness is right for you, here are some quick guidelines you can follow.

what firmness is right for you

Generally speaking, lighter sleepers prefer a softer mattress than heavier sleepers. And side sleepers prefer a softer mattress than stomach or back sleepers.

If you’re a lightweight side sleeper, I would opt for the Saatva Classic soft, the TEMPUR-Adapt soft, or the TEMPUR-breeze soft.

If you’re a heavier-weighted back or stomach sleeper, I would opt for the Saatva Classic firm, the TEMPUR-Adapt firm, or the TEMPUR-breeze firm.

Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid edge support - side sleeping with vest
Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid edge support – side sleeping with vest

If you fall anywhere else in the middle, basically any of these other mattresses could work for you, since the firmness is very similar among all other models.

For a medium feel with a little extra response, support, and pushback, consider the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid, the TEMPUR-Adapt medium hybrid, or the TEMPUR-breeze medium hybrid.

Design

Both of these brands offer hybrid mattresses with foam and coils. In addition, Tempurpedic also offers all-foam options.

Which Mattress Should You Buy?

Between Saatva and Tempurpedic, there are many great mattresses to choose from. Not sure how to pick? Let’s review some of the highlights below on when you may want to buy each mattress and who it is made for.

Should You Buy the Saatva Classic?

I would recommend the Saatva Classic if you’re looking for:

  • Luxury feel. The Saatva Classic has a plush, Euro-style cover and is the highest-performing mattress in this comparison. For a truly luxury feel that doesn’t skimp on performance, the Saatva Classic is a solid pick.
  • Deeper sinkage. If you are looking for deeper sinkage, the Saatva Classic fits the bill, without sacrificing cooling or response time.

Should You Buy the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid?

I would recommend the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid if you’re looking for:

  • Less sinkage. The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid has the plush feel of a quilted cover, but less sinkage than the Saatva Classic. This mattress marries the benefits of coils with the benefits of memory foam.
  • Fastest response time. This mattress also has the fastest response time among all mattresses tested here. For memory foam, where response time can sometimes be a problem, this could be a real advantage.

Click here to learn more or to check the price of the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid mattress.

Should You Buy a Tempurpedic?

I would recommend a Tempurpedic mattress if you’re looking for:

  • Excellent pressure relief. Tempurpedic mattresses have thick comfort layers made up of their patented TEMPUR foam, which is a type of luxury memory foam. If you love the feel of memory foam it’s hard to go wrong with Tempurpedic.
  • Lots of options. Both the TEMPUR-Adapt and TEMPUR-breeze collections come in three different firmnesses (and profile heights); and as an all-foam mattress or a hybrid mattress. If you aren’t 100% sure what you want, this wide range of options could help you find the perfect mattress for your specific needs.
