WinkBed and Saatva are two more traditional mattress options. They have a higher profile and use a mix of foam and coils for comfort and support.

Both brands come in at a higher price than some of the competition, but the quality is exceptional. They both offer exceptional pressure relief, edge support, cooling, and a balanced feel of bounce and compression.

Our Verdict

In this comparison of WinkBed vs. Saatva, which mattress is best? The answer really depends on what you’re looking for. WinkBed offers a quality hybrid in three different firmnesses, one specifically designed for plus-sized sleepers, a memory foam mattress, or a latex mattress..

The Saatva, on the other hand, is a more traditional coil-on-coil mattress. Or they also have the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid, which is a memory foam hybrid with pocketed coil base.

Performance-wise, WinkBed and Saatva are both fantastic mattresses with exceptional scores all around. They have excellent cooling, great edge support, and fast response time. These two brands represent some of the highest-scoring mattresses that we’ve tested to date.

Performance Tests

To rank and score each of these mattresses, we perform a series of tests that looks at nine different factors as well as consider the policies of the company as a whole.

We look at a mix of objective and subjective data to help generate the final scores for these mattresses.

Testing categories include:

  1. Cooling
  2. Sinkage
  3. Motion Transfer
  4. Response
  5. Bounce
  6. Edge Support
  7. Sex
  8. Pressure Relief
  9. Off-Gassing
  10. Company

Let’s go ahead and dive in.

Cooling Test

For cooling, it’s really hard to choose a bad mattress in this group. Although the numbers are all different, the scores are all fantastic.

Cooling TestScoreBaselineMax TempEnding Temp
Saatva Classic1081.4°94.0°-3.9°
Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid1078.0°89.4°-8.1°
Winkbed1084.0°90.3°-2.7°
Winkbed Plus1085.3°89.3°-4.1°
  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (after 5 minutes) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

TESTING NOTE: Varying baseline temperatures are directly related to testing these mattresses on different days, times, and seasons. For example, the baseline temperature in December will be much lower than the baseline temperature in August.

Compare the Models

Below, you can watch a video of how the heat dissipates on each mattress during our cooling test. For this test, we lie on the mattress for 15 minutes, get off the mattress, and then take periodic surface-level temperature measurements.

Sinkage Test

The level of sinkage for each mattress is documented in the images and table below.

Sinkage TestSinkage DepthMax Sinkage
Saatva ClassicDeep2.40″
Saatva Memory Foam HybridMinimal1.88″
WinkbedDeep2.38″
Winkbed PlusDeep2.50″

The sinkage levels between all WinkBed and Saatva models that we’ve tested fall within 0.5″ between the maximum and the minimum. This is a moderate level of sinkage, considering the average amount of sinkage is 2.21″.

WinkBed

WinkBed sinkage test

Saatva Classic

Saatva Classic sinkage

WinkBed Plus

WinkBed Plus Sinkage Test

Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid

Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid sinkage test

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid has less sinkage than the average (1.88″), while the other three mattresses in this comparison have more sinkage than average.

At the top of the scale is the WinkBed Plus with 2.50″ of sinkage. These results don’t really surprise me, especially since the WinkBed Plus has a plusher top than the other mattresses.

This plushness on the Plus can be great for heavier sleepers who want a bit more contour without sacrificing good support.

Motion Transfer Test

Motion transfer is an important testing category to consider, especially for couples. You can see the full chart below of how the motion moved on each of these four mattresses we tested.

Motion Transfer TestScoreAcc. Range
Saatva Classic9.85.86 m/s²
Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid8.710.11 m/s²
Winkbed9.85.85 m/s²
Winkbed Plus8.89.67 m/s²

When it comes to motion transfer, the Saatva Classic and Winkbed Original had great performance while the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid and Winkbed Plus struggled in this area.

Winkbed and Saatva Classic have notably less motion transfer than the average. However, the Winkbed Plus and Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid both have higher than average motion.

For comparison, the average motion transfer of all mattresses we’ve tested to date is 5.76 m/s².

The full videos of the motion transfer are included below:

The graphs below show a quantifiable version of motion transfer based on accelerometer data.

WinkBed: Accelerometer Data

Saatva Classic: Accelerometer Data

Saatva motion transfer graph

As you can see, just looking at the WinkBed and Saatva Classic above, there are some important things to note.

Although the Saatva technically generates about 25% more motion, you can also see how it is absorbed by the mattress. By about 0.36 seconds, the motion is basically gone.

Now, look at WinkBed. This mattress has less motion transfer initially, but the motion continues for a full second—3X longer than the same amount of motion on the Saatva.

If you’d like to see the motion transfer chart for each specific model please see our full reviews below:

Response Test

Moving right along, let’s talk about response time. WinkBed and Saatva were absolutely fantastic when it comes to fast and snappy response time.

Response TestScoreMostly RecoveredCompletely Recovered
Saatva Classic100.4 seconds0.8 seconds
Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid100.3 seconds1.0 seconds
Winkbed100.2 seconds0.3 seconds
Winkbed Plus100.3 seconds0.4 seconds

Of all mattresses we’ve tested to date, the average mattress is mostly recovered by 0.59 seconds and completely recovered by 0.95 seconds.

All four of the mattresses in this comparison perform better than this, but the most impressive is the WinkBed.

A closer visual of the level of responsiveness for each mattress is documented in the videos below.

Bounce Test

Bounce is not as much of a black-and-white issue since bounce is largely preferential, but the data below highlights some of the differences between mattresses.

Bounce TestBounce HeightBounce Range
Saatva ClassicExtremely High14.67″
Saatva Memory Foam HybridExtremely High14.06″
WinkbedModerate9.91″
Winkbed PlusLow6.75″

The Saatva Classic has the most bounce (14.46″) and being an all-coil mattress, this isn’t too surprising. Closely following the Classic is the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid with 14.06″.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is the WinkBed Plus (6.75″) with almost half the bounce and the Original Winkbed (9.91″).

Check out the videos below for bounce in real-time:

Edge Support Test

When considering edge support, all of the mattresses tested here have fantastic scores. They all have 3.0″ or sinkage or less.

Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid9.83.50″Exceptional
Winkbed102.25″Exceptional

Across the board between all WinkBed and Saatva mattresses, there was limited sagging or pressure points due to poor edge support.

Sex Test

Next in our head-to-head matchup is sex performance. To assess this category we look at some of the most important factors that contribute to the overall experience.

WinkBed

WinkBed cover

Saatva

Saatva Edge Close Up

Those factors include bounce, edge support, noise, pressure relief, and cooling.

Here’s a look at our sex formula:

Sex Score Formula = (Bounce * 0.6) + (Edge Support * 0.2) + (Noise * 0.1) + (Pressure Relief * 0.05) + (Cooling * 0.05)

We use the following scores, plugged into the formula, to derive a sex score for each mattress.

Sex TestSex ScoreBounceEdge SupportNoisePressure ReliefCooling
Saatva Classic9.910109.01010
Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid9.8109.89.09.510
Winkbed9.910109.01010
Winkbed Plus9.49.2109.01010

This category is another one where there’s just hardly a bad pick in the whole lot. Both Saatva and WinkBed are fantastic for sex, each putting multiple perfect scores up in the table above.

They all have enough bounce to be engaging and active, a cool sleeping surface, limited noise, optional pressure relief, and reliable edge support.

Pressure Relief Test

The next category on our list is pressure relief. Pressure relief is the ability for a mattress to fully support the body and effectively relieve pressure. Especially along the spine, hips, shoulder, and neck, pressure relief is hugely important.

Winkbed Soft Mattress Cover Photo

Although there are many factors that contribute to (or hinder) good pressure relief, two of the most important include the thickness of the comfort layer and the thickness of the overall mattress.

Generally, we want to see at least 3.0″ of comfort material and at least 10″ of mattress thickness (for adults).

Here is a quick look at the pressure relief of the WinkBed vs. Saatva.

Pressure Relief TestScoreComfort LayerSupport Layer
Saatva Classic104.5″7.0″
Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid9.52.5″9.0″
Winkbed105.0″9.0″
Winkbed Plus105.5″9.0″

Most of these mattresses have between 4.0 – 4.5″ of comfort material, which is more than sufficient for most sleepers. The only exception is the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid, which has 2.5″ of comfort material.

WinkBed

Saatva Classic

Saatva Classic material layers

In my subjective opinion, the mattress with the best pressure relief is the Saatva Classic.

It just has a wonderful feel and avoids any painful pressure points. The pillow-top cradles without smothering and the foam / coils provide a strong support system.

Off-Gassing Test

Both the WinkBed and Saatva mattresses had very low levels of off-gassing (or none). On average, we see mattresses smell for 2.74 days and most have a strong smell upon the initial unboxing.

Firmness: 3.5 – 4

For lightweight side sleepers, the Saatva Classic soft or WinkBed soft may be a better choice, as you’ll be able to sink into the mattress a bit more and engage with deeper layers.

Firmness: 6

The Winkbed Original comes in a medum firmness of 6 out of 10, as well as the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid.

Firmness: 7

For heavier sleepers, the WinkBed Plus is a great option at 7 out of 10. It’s a bit firmer than a true medium and designed specifically the support heavier bodies.

Sleeping positions and mattress firmness

As a general rule, side sleepers need a little more softness. So the soft and medium firmness options are better. Stomach and back sleepers don’t want too much softness (as too much can bring the spine out of alignment), so the medium and firm choices are better for those sleepers.

Heavier weight sleepers generally want a medium or firm mattress, as the added firmness also means extra support.

Support & Sleeping Positions

Your personal weight and sleeping position can help determine if a certain firmness would work for you. Use the tables below to decide what firmness is best for you.

WinkBed vs. Saatva: Which Should You Buy?

Alright, so bottom line… which mattress is right for you? Both the WinkBed and the Saaatva mattresses have some advantages and disadvantages depending on what you’re looking for.

Check out the quick summaries below of who each mattress might be best for you.

Winkbed Gravitylux Sitting
Winkbed Gravitylux Sitting

The original WinkBed is best for sleepers who want excellent cooling, pressure relief, edge support, and sex performance. Being available in 3 firmness options is ideal, as it opens the mattress up to essentially all sleeping positions and most body weights. The Winkbed is designed to be comfortable and supportive for the vast majority of sleepers.

Read our full WinkBed mattress review.

The original Saatva Classic mattress is best for the same types of sleepers that Winkbed is best for. It’s a good all-around mattress that’s suitable to the needs of most sleepers. It has excellent cooling, pressure relief, edge support, and sex performance. With 3 firmnesses it can be a good option for most sleepers. Notably, the Saatva Classic Firm and Soft are a little firmer and a little softer than the Winkbed’s soft and firm options, so if you really want a feel at the extremes the Saatva can be the better choice.

Read our full Saatva mattress review.

The WinkBed Plus mattress is best for sleepers who are over 300+ lbs. The mattress is built with an extra thick euro-style pillow topper, increased firmness, and more supportive materials. This makes the mattress better suited to sleepers with heavier bodies. It’s designed to perform the same way that the original Winkbed does, just with greater support for heavier-weight sleepers.

Read our full WinkBed Plus mattress review.

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid is best for sleepers who are looking for a hybrid mattress with the feel of memory foam. It offers a medium feel (6 out of 10) which is suitable for a wide range of sleeper preferences. This mattress has excellent performance across the board, with the only real downside being the higher levels of motion transfer.
