Best For

  • Minimal sinkage and more of a floating feel
  • Excellent cooling performance

Considerations

  • Significantly higher price tag than other mattresses with comparable performance
  • 39% higher levels of motion transfer than average

Our Verdict

The Purple Restore Plus is a specialty mattress that uses a pocketed coil base, foam, and the patented Purple Grid elastic polymer. It is available in two firmness options—soft and firm. We tested the firm version.

In our performance tests, the Purple Restore Plus mattress had good scores across the board with its only real downside being higher levels of motion transfer.

The price is steep (over $1200 more than the average queen hybrid), but if you want the Purple grid then you’re going to have to pay more. This mattress is backed by over 20 years of material research and holds 66 active patents, an impressive resume for any mattress.

How is Purple Restore Plus Different?

The Purple Restore Plus mattress has a performance score that is slightly above average and a price that is also slightly above average when compared to specialty mattresses alone.

However, when we compare the Restore Plus to any other hybrid mattress, we see a sharper contrast, and not necessarily to the benefit of Purple.

Dollar for dollar, the Restore Plus is 86% more expensive than the average hybrid ($1,391).

If you’re looking for good performance and don’t necessarily need the Purple Grid elastic polymer, a modern hybrid may be a better choice to save money.

Purple Restore Plus Elastic Polymer
Purple Restore Plus Elastic Polymer

That being said, the Restore Plus has above-average cooling performance, a faster material response time, better edge support, a better sex score, and a thicker comfort layer for better pressure relief.

The only real downsides are the price and higher levels of motion transfer, nearly 40% more than average.

Considering preferential factors, this mattress has less sinkage than average as well as 26% more bounce than average.

9.0

Cooling Test

The Purple Restore Plus has excellent cooling performance. During our tests, I felt no significant level of heat retention around my body. The elastic polymer grid doesn’t retain heat the way that a poly or memory foam mattress can.

Baseline Temp.

81.7° F

Max Temp.

91.7° F

Ending Temp.

84.7° F

In addition, the base layer of pocketed coils creates an increased level of airflow. While the layer of polyfoam in the core will retain more heat, it is positioned further away from sleeper bodies, therefore limiting its impact.

Max Temp.

Ending Temp

Purple Restore Plus After Cooling Test
Purple Restore Plus After Cooling Test

In our objective cooling tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 91.7° F, which is 2.35° warmer than average. While the max temp was slightly warmer than average, the heat dissipation was notably better.

  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

From minutes 0 to 1 we recorded a temperature reduction of 5.1°, which is 0.54° cooler than average. From minutes 0 to 5 the reduction was 7.0°, which is 0.03° cooler than average.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Based on the combination of our subjective assessment, objective data, and material analysis, I’m confident that the Purple Restore Plus will provide sufficient cooling for most sleepers.

Sinkage Test

The Purple Restore Plus has a minimal level of sinkage. In our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 1.99”. This is 0.19” less sinkage than the average of 2.18”.

Sinkage Depth

1.99″

Sinkage Feel

Minimal

The mattress creates more of a “floating on top” of the mattress feel, as opposed to sinking down “in” the mattress. This is especially true for the arms, legs, head, and lighter parts of the body in general.

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Purple Restore Plus Sinkage Test
Purple Restore Plus Sinkage Test

My butt and midsection do sink down more, but it’s still quite a restrained level of sinkage. The minimal sinkage depth, combined with rapid response, slightly firm feel, and floating feel, create a mattress that does not overly hug or contour to the body.

Bear in mind, we tested the firm version of the Restore Plus. The softer version would likely create more sinkage and a more balanced level of body contour and hug.

7.2

Motion Transfer Test

The Purple Restore Plus has a moderate level of motion transfer. In our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 11.27 m/s². This is 37.9% more motion than the average of 8.17 m/s².

Max. Acceleration

5.31 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-5.96 m/s²

Accel. Range

11.27 m/s²

While the elastic polymer grid material does a great job of limiting motion by itself, the material combination of a slightly firm feel and support coils both increase motion.

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we see the high motion spikes from 0 to 0.14 seconds. Motion declines immediately thereafter, but still remains spiky until 1.27 seconds, when it returns to near zero levels.

Purple Restore Plus Motion Transfer Chart
Purple Restore Plus Motion Transfer Chart

Mattresses with the lowest motion are able to return to near-zero levels within 0.3 seconds. Needless to say, Purple Restore Plus is quite far from that mark. Both the motion duration and motion intensity tell the same story, this mattress has a high level of motion transfer and less than great motion isolation.

10

Response Test

The Purple Restore Plus has an extremely fast material response. In our tests, we measured a mostly recovered response time 0.2 seconds and a fully recovered response time of 0.3 seconds.

Mostly Recovered

0.2 sec.

Complete Recovery

0.3 sec.

This is effectively instant response and it’s tied for 1st as the fastest-responding mattress we’ve tested to date.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

Based on all of our tests to date, we see an average mostly recovered speed of 0.42 seconds and an average fully recovered speed of 0.86 seconds. The Purple Restore Plus is notably faster than the averages in both categories.

Bounce Test

The Purple Restore Plus has an extremely high level of bounce. In our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 12.20”. This is 2.59” more bounce than the average of 9.61”.

One performance area the Purple almost always excels in is high bounce.

Max. Depth

5.79″

Max. Rebound

6.41″

Total Bounce

A higher level of bounce makes the mattress easier to move around and improves sex. At 12.20” of bounce the Purple Restore Plus is absolutely on the high end.

Max. Sinkage Depth

Max Bounce Height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

In general, I like to see 8-12” of total bounce, as it’s enough to experience the benefits, while not being too high. While the Restore Plus is a little north of my ideal threshold, it’s only slightly beyond it.

In any case, the very high level of bounce won’t be for everyone, but if you like the feel of Purple’s elastic polymer material and want the absolute best sex performance, then this high level of bounce will be a welcome addition.

10

Edge Support Test

The Purple Restore Plus has outstandingly good edge support for both sitting and lying. In our tests, we measured a sitting edge compression of 2.75”. This is 1.42” less edge sinkage than the average of 4.17”.

Max Sinkage

2.75″

Lying Support

Outstanding

An edge with less sinkage creates more robust support for sitting and lying. Ideally, I want to see 4.0” of sitting edge compression or less. At 2.75” the Restore Plus easily hit my benchmark.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 140 lbs.

Lying edge support was equally as good. I felt well supported in all sleeping positions even when lying directly on the edge of the mattress.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

The mattress has a robust edge support system including a 3.0” tall and 4.0” wide poly foam that encases the entire perimeter.

In addition, it uses reinforced edge support coils, which further help to improve the performance. Overall, I am exceedingly pleased with the level of edge support performance.

9.9

Sex Test

The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.

These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce65%10Extremely High
Edge Support20%10Outstanding
Noise5%10Minimal
Pressure Relief5%9.0Excellent
Cooling5%9.0Excellent

For the Purple Restore Plus, these individual factors give it a rating of “excellent”.

Purple Restore Plus Sitting On Edge
Purple Restore Plus Sitting On Edge

This mattress has everything we’re looking for in a mattress that’s great for sex. It has very high levels of bounce, 26% more than average, and outstanding edge support.

These two factors alone make up 80% of the overall sex score. It is also quiet, has excellent pressure relief, and great cooling as well. For a mattress that makes sex better, the Restore Plus hybrid certainly checks all the boxes.

9.0

Pressure Relief Test

Pressure relief on the Purple Restore Plus was excellent. During our tests, I felt no significant level of pressure point build-up. The mattress does a nice job of balancing the weight of sleeper bodies and creating even support across the mattress.

Comfort Layer

5.0″

Support Layer

8.0″

While pressure relief is excellent, it definitely isn’t perfect. Given the price point, I will say that I was a little disappointed the performance did not rise to the 10/10 level.

The Restore Plus creates a fairly dramatic “floating on top” of the mattress feel. This limits the contour, hug, sinkage, and pressure relief. The mattress is still comfortable and it absolutely earns the 9.5 / 10, which is an excellent score. Even so, for $2,595 I think it’s reasonable to expect more here.

7.2

Off-Gassing Test

Off-gassing on the Purple Restore Plus had fair off-gassing performance.

The smell was strong right out of the box and took 10 days to fully off-gas. The average off-gassing period is 4.4 days so this mattress is notably longer.

Initial Smell Strength

Strong

Off-Gassing Period

Beyond just the time duration alone, the initial smell from this mattress was quite unique, for lack of a better word. It smells like burnt BBQ on a grill…and not in a good way. It’s unlike any other off-gassing smell I can recall having tested previously.

The mattress comes with a 100-night trial period which is 38% shorter than the 163-night trial average (comparing all mattresses tested to date).

It also comes with a 10-year warranty. For some context, 28% of mattresses we’ve tested have lifetime warranties and the average of the other 72% of mattresses is 14 years. So a 10-year warranty is certainly on the shorter side, but not atypical.

How firm is the Purple Restore Plus?

The Purple Restore Plus hybrid is available in two firmness levels—soft or firm.

Soft Version

Firmness Chart 5

The Soft version has an estimated firmness of 5 out of 10 and a medium feel, while the Firm version has a firmness of 7 out of 10 and a slightly firm feel.

Support & Sleeping Positions

The Purple Restore Plus has excellent support. During our tests, I felt supported in all sleeping positions. The Restore Plus checks all of my boxes and then some.

We have a robust 13” total profile with high-quality materials at every level. The mattress builds upon the proven hybrid design of earlier Purple mattress models and attempts to improve upon it with a mix of 3.0” elastic polymer (the Purple Grid), a 2.0” poly foam layer in the middle, and an 8.0” pocketed coil support base.

Purple Restore Plus Sitting
Purple Restore Plus Sitting

The 2.0” poly foam layer in the middle serves to provide additional comfort and transition sleeper bodies in the support coil unit.

The coil unit itself is a zoned unit with 3 different zones. The zones help to create more support where your body needs it in the middle of the mattress while having a more balanced level of support at the head and foot.

Overall, I’m pleased with the support dynamic on the Purple Restore Plus. I expect most sleepers will find it a strong performer.

Design

The Purple Restore Plus is a specialty hybrid mattress with a 13″ thickness. It comes in two firmness options and its overall design is centered around the Purple Grid.

Materials

In total, there are three layers on the Purple Restore Plus hybrid. From to to bottom, these layers include:

  • 3.0″ gel pad / elastic polymer (Purple Grid)
  • 2.0″ poly foam
  • 8.0″ pocketed coils

The Cover

This mattress has a soft, thin cover with moisture-wicking properties and an antimicrobial finish. It is stretchy, breathable, and soft to the touch.

The Comfort Layer

The comfort layer is primarily devoted to the 3.0″ elastic polymer Purple Grid. This open grid structure allows for heat to easily dissipate and provides ample airflow.

The grid is wrapped in an edge support foam that has a denser feel that helps to support the grid and provides increased edge support.

Below the grid is a transitional layer of poly foam (yellow) that acts as a transitional layer between the polymer grid and the support coils below.

The Support Layer

The support layer at the base of the mattress is an 8.0″ layer of pocketed coils. Each coil is individually wrapped in a thin fabric, which allows each coil to move independently of each other and contains three different zones.

Coils in the middle of the mattress allow for more pressure while coils at the head or foot of the mattress are lighter and designed for less pressure. All in all, a zoned system generally provides better support and maintains spinal alignment.

Product Evolution

The Purple Restore Plus was released in Summer 2023 as a new version of the Purple Hybrid Premier 3. In the Summer of 2023, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 was slowly phased out and discontinued.

Here are the most notable material changes made comparing the legacy Purple Hybrid Premier 3 to the new Purple Restore Plus:

Purple Restore PlusPurple Hybrid Premier 3
Purple Grid3.0″3.0″
Poly Foam Transition2.0″1.0″
Pocketed Coil8.0″7.5″
Base FoamNone1.0″

In terms of materials and basic design, both the Restore Plus and Purple Hybrid Premier 3 are extremely similar. That said, the foam quality on the Purple Restore Plus definitely seems worse compared to what Purple used on the Hybrid Premier 3.

Purple Restore Plus

Purple Restore Plus Material Layers
Purple Restore Plus Material Layers

Purple Hybrid Premier 3

Purple Hybrid Premier 3 Material Layers
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 Material Layers

Comparing the performance of the two mattresses we experienced worse cooling, more motion transfer, and worse off-gassing on the Purple Restore Plus.

However, edge support is notably better on the Restore Plus compared to the Premier 3.

It’s possible that the thicker transitional poly foam and/or a new pocketed coil unit are resulting in worse motion transfer.

As far as the cooling is concerned, that too could be negatively impacted by the thicker transitional poly foam layer. However, in my view, it is the thicker and ostensibly less breathable cover that is having the biggest negative impact on cooling performance relative to the Hybrid Premier 3 model.

Overall, I find myself somewhat disappointed with the Restore Plus. In my view, this feels like a downgrade compared to the earlier Hybrid Premier 3 model.
