Best For

  • Good cooling with coil and foam materials
  • Excellent edge support
  • High levels of bounce, good for sex performance

Considerations

  • Only 2.5″ comfort layer may not be suitable for heavier weight sleepers
  • More bounce means higher levels of motion transfer

Our Verdict

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is a mattress designed for the masses. With excellent cooling, moderate sinkage, and a fast response time, there’s not much to not like about this mattress.

It is a medium-firm mattress (6 out of 10 on the firmness scale) with excellent edge support, high bounce, and fantastic performance for sex.

The high levels of bounce also mean that this mattress has higher levels of motion transfer as well, which may not be the best choice for couples who easily disturb each other during the night.

Aside from the preference for bounce and motion transfer, this is a fantastic mattress with wide appeal for a range of sleepers.

How is the Signature Hybrid Different?

If you’re looking for a great hybrid mattress with a classic feel, the Brooklyn Bedding signature checks a lot of boxes.

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid scored above average in our performance tests while also having a price that is 30% below the average cost for hybrids.

This makes the Signature HYbrid one of the best value hybrids we’ve tested to date.

The Signature Hybrid performs slightly above average for cooling, response time, sex performance, and off-gassing time.

It is slightly bouncier than average and also has slightly more motion transfer than average.

Edge support is significantly better than average, which is especially impressive considering that the mattress is only 11″ thick, 0.9″ thinner than the average mattress (hybrids and non-hybrids considered).

9.5

Cooling Test

The cooling performance on the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid was excellent. In our objective tests, it reached a maximum surface level temperature of 90.7° F.

This 0.5° lower than the average surface temperature across all mattresses we’ve tested to date, which is 91.2° F.

  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

Looking at the heat dissipation after we got off the mattress the performance was equally as impressive.

Within 1 minute after getting off the mattress the surface temperature dropped from 90.7° F to 86.0° F, a decrease of 4.7°.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Heat Dissipation Chart Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid

Heat dissipation continued from there, declining to 83.8° F after 5 minutes with no one on the mattress. That’s a total reduction of 7.2° F.

The most notable decrease is the 1-minute mark, as that gives a better idea of just how much heat the mattress holds onto.

The hybrid design clearly creates a lot of airflow, which allows the mattress to breathe better, dissipate heat better, and keep sleepers cool. All things considered, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress has excellent cooling.

Sinkage Test

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid medium sinkage test
Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid medium sinkage test

In our pressure point sinkage test, we measured a maximum sinkage of 2.27”. This is pretty typical for a medium-firm mattress.

It’s only slightly deeper than the average pressure point sinkage across all mattresses we’ve tested to date, which is 2.14”.

Generally, anything within the 2.0”ish range is where I like to see sinkage depths.

It’s enough to contour the body and provide pressure relief, but not so deep as to introduce potential problems with support, heat retention, or feeling overly enveloped by the foams. All in all, it’s got a good balanced sinkage depth.

8.7

Motion Transfer Test

Motion transfer was quite a bit higher than what we expected. We use an accelerometer to measure motion.

The level of motion transfer is documented in the video below.

Max. Acceleration

6.77 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-3.46 m/s²

Accel. Range

10.23 m/s²

Our accelerometer measured a total acceleration range of 10.23 m/s². This is considerably more than the average across all mattresses we’ve tested to date, which is 6.06 m/s².

Lower is always better in this case, and we’re pretty far from low with a rate of 10.23 m/s^2. While the total acceleration range was fairly high, I was more pleased with the total motion duration. Looking at the motion transfer chart, we can see that most of the motion is dissipated by the 0.3-second mark.

There is a slight uptick from 0.5 to 0.7, but it’s fairly minor and quickly declines back to near zero. All things considered, the level of motion transfer is okay, but not great.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid medium motion transfer chart
Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid medium motion transfer chart

If low motion transfer is important to you you may want to consider the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Hybrid mattress, which has an acceleration range of 4.61 m/s².

And if that’s not low enough, the Layla Hybrid mattress measured a range of 2.45 m/s², which is the lowest motion transfer of any hybrid mattress we’ve tested to date.

10

Response Test

Response time was fast on the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid. It was able to mostly recover to its original shape within 0.3 seconds. However, a full recovery of all materials does take 0.9 seconds.

Mostly Recovered

0.3 sec.

Complete Recovery

0.9 sec.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

The mostly recovered time is excellent, a full 0.2 seconds faster than the average across all mattresses we’ve tested to date. However, the complete recovery was a little slower than average, which is 0.88 seconds.

Most sleepers will likely find the level of response to be fast enough that it’s a non-issue. However, sleepers who don’t like the feeling of being more enveloped by slightly slower responding foams may find it less than ideal.

Bounce Test

There is a moderate to high level of bounce. In our bounce tests, we measured a total bounce height of 9.99” when we dropped our 12-pound medicine ball.

Max. Depth

6.05″

Max. Rebound

This is a fairly high level, but also fairly typical for a hybrid mattress.

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

Most mattresses that have pocketed springs can be expected to have a higher bounce.

More bounce is preferable for sex, and many sleepers also simply like the feel of more bounce for sleeping, getting in and out of bed, moving around at time, etc.

At 9.99” of bounce the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid has more bounce than the average of 8.61”.

10

Edge Support Test

The edge support on this mattress was exceptional. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid has among the best edge support we’ve tested in any mattress to date.

Max. Sinkage

Lying Support

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

At its deepest point, the mattress only compressed to a depth of 2.75” when sitting directly on the edge. This is an excellent compression depth, as the average sinkage across all mattresses we’ve tested to date is 4.19″.

Edge support while lying directly on the edge was equally as impressive. I felt as well supported directly on the edge as I did while lying in the middle of the mattress.

One last important note – the mattress only has reinforced edge support at the sides of the mattress (which is always where our tests are taken). The edge support at the head and foot of the mattress is notably worse.

Brooklyn Bedding decided to not reinforce edge support at the head / foot as a cost cutting measure, as most sleepers really just need the increased support at the sides of the mattress.

10

Sex Test

The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.

These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce60%10Extremely Low
Edge Support20%10Exceptional
Noise10%10minimal
Pressure Relief5%9.5Exceptional
Cooling5%9.5Exceptional

For the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid, these individual factors generated a sex score of 10.

Very few mattresses score a perfect 10 in this category, but the Brooklyn Bedding hybrid had an excellent score.

This mattress has a high amount of bounce, which is fantastic for sex. Edge support is great as well with minimal noise, despite the use of coils in the core of the mattress.

Pressure relief and cooling were not far behind, scoring a 9.5. Because these factors are less significant compared to the top three factors, it didn’t really affect the score at all.

Overall, the Signature Hybrid is an excellent mattress for high-scoring sex performance.

9.5

Pressure Relief Test

Many times mattresses that are built with extra support for heavier persons end up doing a fairly poor job at relieving pressure for moderate and lightweight sleepers.

Comfort Layer

2.5″

Comfort Layer Ratio

22%

Pressure relief was excellent. The quilted cover on top of 2.5” of poly foam is more than sufficient to provide great contour, hug, and pressure relief.

Generally, I like to see a thicker comfort layer, as 2.5” of foams on top isn’t super thick.

However, the pocketed coil system does a nice job of transitioning and supporting sleepers well, as opposed to more basic support foam, which can sometimes feel like hitting a wall.

What About Heavier Sleepers?

My only concern is that heavier-weight sleepers may find that the 2.5” of comfort material just isn’t enough.

If that’s a concern for you and/or you weigh more than 300 pounds, I would suggest taking a look at the Titan mattress by Brooklyn Bedding, in addition to the Winkbed Plus and Helix Plus.

All 3 of these mattresses are designed to provide a better support dynamic to heavier-weight sleepers.

9.8

Off-Gassing Test

The smell right out of the box was strong. It took 3 days before the smell went away.

The company score takes a look at factors that may influence your experience with the mattress.

Factors include length of the trial period, warranty, shipping / return costs, and country of origin.

The Signature Hybrid is produced by Brooklyn Bedding, a company that has been around since 1995 and selling online mattresses direct since 2009.

They offer a 120-night trial period with a 10-year limited warranty. Shipping is free and you can return the mattress, but there is a $99 return fee to do so.

Returns are free as long as you can provide proof of donation. You’ll need to drop off the mattress yourself or coordinate your own donation pickup.

If you need Brooklyn Bedding to arrange pick-up, the company charges a $99 pickup fee.

After your new bed arrives, you have 120 nights to try it out, but must keep it for at least the first 30 days. They call this the “Break-In Period” and it’s not that uncommon among the industry.

A break-in period allows for the mattress to fully relax and gives your body a chance to adjust as well. Although it may feel different at first, different is not always bad.

How firm is the Signature Hybrid?

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is available in 3 firmnesses, soft, medium and firm. For our review, we tested the medium firmness version and I would rate it 6 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm. It has a classic medium feel that makes it a nice option for a wide range of sleeper weights and sleeping positions.

firmness - 6 out of 10 - medium

Based on our experience with other Brooklyn Bedding mattresses, as well as Brooklyn Bedding’s firmness charts, I would rate the soft mattress at a 4 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

firmness - 4 out of 10 - soft

And lastly, I would rate the firm mattress at an 8 out of 10.

Support & Sleeping Positions

Overall, I found the support to be excellent. The 8.0″ pocketed coil system seems to be really solid.

Here are the ideal weights and positions for the medium version.

150-250 lbs.Yes YesYes

But there is more to support than just firmness alone. The amount of comfort material can also play a big role.

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid only has 2.5” of comfort material, which just isn’t a ton.

As a result, heavier-weight sleepers, but especially those who sleep on their side, may find pressure points resulting from the support dynamic. For those sleepers, I would suggest taking a look at the Titan, Winkbed Plus, or Helix Plus mattresses.

Design

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature is a classic hybrid that uses foam, pocketed coils, and a support base to provide comfort and support.

It is a bit of a “middle-of-the-road” mattress and falls in an area that would be widely accepted by many different types of sleepers.

You can read more about the materials listed below.

Materials

From top to bottom, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid includes the following layers:

  • 1.5″ poly foam (latex-like)
  • 1.0″ poly foam
  • 8.0″ pocketed coils
Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid medium material layers

The Cover

The cover of the Signature Hybrid is plus and soft. It has deeper areas of tufting which gives it more compression and contour than a thin, flat cover would.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid medium mattress cover
Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid medium mattress cover

The texture of the cover is still pretty thin and breathable, with a good amount of stretch to it. Despite the tufting pulling the cover taught to the surface of the mattress, it’s still possible to stretch the cover a bit.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid medium cover close-up
Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid medium cover close-up

But even with pulling on it, it is still fast to snap back to its original position.

The Comfort Layer

The comfort layer of the Signature Hybrid may be a little thinner than others that we’ve tested, but it is still very nice.

Two layers of foam are combined to make up the total comfort layer, the top being a 1.5″ layer of latex-like poly foam and the second layer being 1.0″ of slightly denser poly foam.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid medium poly layer
Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid medium poly layer

As I’ve mentioned above, if you’re on the heavier side, you may find that 2.5″ of comfort material just isn’t enough, no matter how quality it is.

But for others, it may be more than sufficient and provide excellent pressure relief.

The Support Layer

Below the foam is an 8.0″ thick coil layer. Each spring is individually encased in fabric, which allows the coils to work independently of each other, quietly and effectively.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid medium pocketed coils
Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid medium pocketed coils

Lastly, below the coils is a thin layer of ultra-dense support foam that really is just intended to help the mattress keep it shape and provide pushback for the coils and foam above.

Product Evolution

The Signature Hybrid by Brooklyn Bedding has been around since 2017 and remains one of their most popular mattress models.

Since the original launch, there have been a few small changes, but the most notable is the upgraded coils.

Compared to the original, newer versions of the Signature Hybrid uses more narrow coils on the edges which provides better edge support.

With the changes in coils, some customers report that the mattress has a softer feel compared to the original Signature Hybrid.

Extended Sizes

One factor that sets Brooklyn Bedding apart is its wide range of size options, including split mattresses or shortened sizes for RVs or campers.

The Signature Hybrid is available in the following sizes:

  • Twin
  • Twin XL
  • Full
  • Queen
  • King
  • Cal. King
  • Split Cal. King – 36×84″
  • Short Full – 48×74″
  • Short Queen – 60×74″
  • Olympic Queen – 66×80″
  • Short King – 72×75″
  • RV King – 70×74″
  • RV King – 70×80″
  • RV King – 72×80″

Within each of these sizes, the Signature Hybrid comes in three firmnesses:

  • Soft – 4 out of 10
  • Medium – 6 out of 10
  • Firm – 8 out of 10

Considering size and firmness, that is 42 different mattresses that are available in the Signature Hybrid.
