Our Verdict

Both Loom & Leaf and Tempurpedic are high-quality mattresses with the classic memory foam feel. They are great for deep compression, pressure relief, hug, and contouring. Especially for side sleepers, these factors are all critically important.

Loom & Leaf has significantly better cooling and more edge support. These two factors alone make the Loom & Leaf the better option overall.

  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (after 5 minutes) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

When it comes to cooling, the Loom & Leaf takes the cake. Each mattress basically had the same starting temperature.

After lying on each mattress for 15 minutes, the Tempurpedic got hotter than the Loom & Leaf and also had a harder time dissipating the heat.

After five minutes without anyone laying on the mattress, the Loom & Leaf had decreased by over 10° while the Tempurpedic only decreased by ~6° from the max temp.

Sinkage Test

The level of sinkage for each mattress is documented in the images below.

Sinkage levels on the Loom & Leaf compared to the Tempurpedic is pretty similar, with the Loom & Leaf levels being slightly deeper. The images above show how the contouring is more evident when laying on my side.

You can see how each mattress provides hug and deep compression up and down the length of the mattress.

Motion Transfer Test

The level of motion transfer is documented in the video below. The graphs below show a quantifiable version of motion transfer based on accelerometer data.

Max. Acceleration3.19 m/s²1.68 m/s²
Min. Acceleration-1.83 m/s²-3.49 m/s²
Acceleration Range5.02 m/s²5.17 m/s²

Although the acceleration range between the Loom & Leaf and Tempurpedic is similar the way that each mattress experiences motion transfer is quite different.

The Loom & Leaf has a max acceleration value almost twice that of the Tempurpedic. That is the amount of energy that is translated upwards upon the initial ball drop.

But the Tempurpedic has a minimum acceleration value that’s double Loom & Leaf when it comes to sinking into the mattress and translating energy that way.

The result ends up being Tempurpedic having slightly higher levels of motion transfer, but it’s also important to look at the time span.

Tempurpedic is able to absorb the motion and dissipate it by 0.25 seconds, whereas the Loom & Leaf mattress takes about 3 times as long—0.75 seconds to dissipate the same amount of energy.

While the duration of measurable motion is longer on the Loom & Leaf relative to the Tempurpedic, the total level of motion is still small. Both Loom & Leaf and Tempurpedic are among the best mattresses we’ve tested with respect to motion transfer.

Both keep motion to a minimum, which make them great mattresses for couples.

Response Test

The level of responsiveness between these two mattresses is documented in the videos below.

Loom & Leaf Response Test

Tempurpedic Response Test

Response TimeLoom & LeafTempurpedic
Overall SlowModerate
Mostly Recovered1.5 second0.8 second
Completely Recovered2.8 second1.2 second

When comparing the response time, the Tempurpedic is faster. It takes only 0.8 seconds for the mattress to be mostly recovered after removing the medicine ball.

For comparison, it takes the Loom & Leaf almost twice as long at 1.5 seconds.

To be completely recovered takes 1.2 seconds on the Tempurpedic and 2.8 seconds on Loom & Leaf.

Tempurpedic’s memory foam is truly exceptional in its response time. Most memory foams will have a response time that is more similar to Loom & Leaf. Typically to get a faster response time you need to give up the hug, contour, and deep compression of memory foam.

However, Tempurpedic’s proprietary memory foam design manages to keep the classic memory foam feel intact, while still preserving fast material response.

Bounce Test

Bounce levels can also be viewed in real-time via the short video clips below.

Loom & Leaf Bounce Test

Tempurpedic Bounce Test

Bounce Tests Compared

BounceLoom & LeafTempurpedic
Overall LowLow
Max Sinkage Depth3.75″3.49″
Max Bounce Height-0.41″-0.73″

Bounce levels are basically the same on these two mattresses and they are quite low. Upon initial drop, the ball sinks in between 3-4″ and when it bounces upward it doesn’t bounce high enough to even clear the top of the mattress.

This is a true calling card of memory foam. It hugs and provides pressure relief while also absorbing motion and energy.

MORE: If you’re looking for a mattress with more bounce, you may want to consider a modern latex-like foam, like the Leesa or a hybrid mattress with foam + coils, like the Saatva.

Edge Support Test

Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze - sinkage (body)

Edge Support Tests Compared

Edge SupportLoom & LeafTempurpedic
Overall ModeratePoor
Sinkage (butt)3.75″4″
Sinkage (legs)4.75″6″

When it comes to edge support, Loom & Leaf is the clear winner. As you can see in the photo above, Loom & Leaf provides sinkage, but also provides adequate support, and the shape of the mattress isn’t really compromised.

By comparison, when I sat on the edge of the Tempurpedic, there was quite a bit more sinkage— up to 6″ under my legs.

Memory foam is known to have more sinkage so I think the difference-maker here is that Loom & Leaf uses a denser foam around the perimeter of the mattress for reinforcement.

This denser foam is good for support while you sit on the edge or when getting in or out of bed.

At 6″ of sinkage, the Tempurpedic edge support is near collapse. As a result, whether you sleep near, sit on, or have sex on the edge of the mattress, Tempurpedic leaves something to be desired.

Sex Test

The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.

These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score.

Sex FactorWeightLoom & LeafTempurpedic
Bounce50%8.38.2
Edge Support20%9.18.0
Noise20%1010
Sinkage5%109.4
Cooling5%9.18.4
TOTAL8.98.6

When considering these 5 factors, the winner between these two mattresses is Loom & Leaf (although neither score is as high as what we’ve seen from other hybrids without memory foam).

While both of these mattresses have that classic memory foam feel, the Loom & Leaf takes the lead with better edge support, cooling, and a tad better sinkage as well.

All of these factors combine to give Loom & Leaf the upper hand in creating a better mattress for sex.

Pressure Relief Test

Pressure ReliefLoom & LeafTempurpedic
Comfort Layer4.5″4.0″
Support Layer7.5″7.5″

When it comes to pressure relief one of the most important factors we look at is the comfort layer. The comfort layer is the material that provides contouring and deep compression. This is an important part of support and prevents pressure points from forming.

While both Loom & Leaf and Tempurpedic have great comfort layers, the Loom & Leaf is 0.5″ thicker and makes up 38% of the total mattress thickness.

Because of this, Loom & Leaf is going to take another win in this category.

Off-Gassing Test

Off-GassingLoom & LeafTempurpedic

Off-Gassing Period0 Days3 days

Loom and Leaf had zero initial smell upon arrival. Any off-gassing it may have had was fully complete before it arrived at my home. As a result, there was no initial smell and no off-gassing tired required.

Tempurpedic had a moderate smell upon the initial unboxing. While the smell does linger a bit, within 3 days it was gone. This is still faster than the 4-day average (among all mattresses tested to date).

Company

Both Loom & Leaf and the Tempurpedic mattress come from reputable companies with long-standing records of excellence. Tempurpedic has been around for longer, but Loom & Leaf still has a solid history since its establishment in 2011.

Looking specifically at terms, Loom & Leaf offers a longer trial period as well as a longer warranty.

Shipping is going to be longer on Tempurpedic in most cases.

Both Tempurpedic and Loom & Leaf have a fee in the event you need to return the mattress. Loom & Leaf is $99 to make a return. Tempurpedic isn’t exactly clear on how much that fee is, and it seems it may vary based on the mattress. In either case, the customer is paying something.

Firmness

The Loom & Leaf comes in two different firmness levels (Relaxed Firm, 5.5 out of 10, and Firm, 8 out of 10). The Tempurpedic mattress we tested is the Cloud Breeze, a 2016 model that is no longer sold. However, while this exact model isn’t sold, Tempurpedic’s current Breeze line seems to be the replacement.

The current Tempurpedic Breeze is available in soft (4), medium (5), medium hybrid (4.5), and firm (7). As a result, there is a firmness available for essentially everyone.

Design

The Loom and Leaf mattress is a memory foam mattress with no spring or coils. It uses memory foam and a gel layer that provide a reasonable level of cooling with the contouring hug of memory foam. It uses a high-density support foam as a foundation.

The Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze mattress is also memory foam and the foam layers are aerated to help enhance cooling and for a faster response time.

Materials

Both the Loom & Leaf and Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze mattresses are memory foam blends with unique designs to help with response time and cooling.

For example, the Loom & Leaf has a top layer of gel foam to prevent heat build-up. The Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze takes a different approach and uses perforated foams to allow airflow and improved response times.

Loom & Leaf

Loom & Leaf mattress material layers

  • 2″ Gel-infused foam
  • 2.5″ Memory foam
  • 7.5″ Support foam

Tempurpedic

Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze material layers
  • Seamless cover
  • 2″ Memory foam
  • 2″ Memory foam
  • 4″ Support foam
  • 3.5″ Support foam

The Loom & Leaf mattress is 12″ thick with layers of classic memory foam and support foam at the bottom. The topmost layer is a cooling gel foam that helps counteract the natural heat retention of memory foam.

Similarly, the Tempurpedic mattress is also made of layers of memory foam and denser support foams at the base.

Unlike the Loom & Leaf, the Tempurpedic skips the gel layer as well as the higher density foam around the edges.

Which Mattress Should You Buy?

Still not sure which mattress may be best for you? Follow the prompts below to help highlight the biggest differences and potential decision factors between these two mattresses.

Should You Buy the Loom & Leaf?

I would recommend the Loom & Leaf if you’re looking for:

  • Classic memory foam feel: If you’re looking for the contouring, hug, and slower response time of traditional memory foam, the Loom & Leaf is a great option.
  • Good cooling: Aside from being a bit more traditional, this mattress integrates a cooling gel layer for added comfort. During our cooling performance tests, this extra layer really made a big difference.
  • Better edge support: Compared to the Tempurpedic, the Loom & Leaf had much better edge support. It uses a higher density foam along the perimeter

The Loom & Leaf is a good option if you want that classic memory foam feel but with better cooling and edge support. It has a slower response time, low bounce, and high hug and contouring.

Should You Buy the Tempurpedic?

I would recommend the Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze if you’re looking for:

  • In-store options: If it’s critically important that you see the mattress in-store, Tempurpedic is a good option since they offer brick-and-mortar locations. But be prepared to pay a higher price point for the convenience.
  • Low bounce, but faster response: This mattress is a solid mix of elements of classic memory foam (ex: low bounce and contouring) and modern elements (ex: faster response time and aerated foams).
  • Other styles: Tempurpedic has a huge selection of mattresses aside from the Breeze. If you like the Tempurpedic name, but end up not loving the Breeze, it’s pretty likely that there will be another mattress that has a better feel or firmness for your needs.

The Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze is classic memory foam but with faster response times. It struggles a bit with heat retention and poor edge support, but if you truly love a traditional Tempurpedic mattress, the Cloud Breeze could be a good option.

FAQ

Does Loom & Leaf come in a box?

Yes, the Loom & Leaf mattress comes in a box, but it is shipped uncompressed. By comparison, the Leesa is shipped vacuum rolled and compressed.

Can you flip a Loom & Leaf mattress?

No. The Loom & Leaf is not designed to be flipped over.

What are the cons of a Tempur-Pedic mattress?

For most sleepers, the biggest con for Tempurpedic is the price, since it tends to be significantly above the average mattress compared to similar online mattresses. Being largely memory foam in most cases, cooling or sinkage / hug may also be an issue for some sleepers.
