Our Verdict

In the matchup of Saatva vs. Avocado, we’re comparing two different approaches to a quality mattress.

Saatva mattresses include a luxury coil-on-coil (Saatva Classic) or a hybrid mattress (Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid) with higher profiles, quilted covers, and excellent pressure relief. The Saatva story is luxury comfort.

Avocado mattresses tell a different story and that is one of natural, organic materials. Both the Avocado Eco and Avocado Green are organic latex hybrids with thinner covers, different feels, and in total just a different approach to mattress comfort.

For the best overall, Saatva takes gold here, with a score of 9.95 out of 10. This is a nearly perfect score and beats almost all other mattresses we’ve tested to date.

But this is not to say that the Avocado collection doesn’t outperform Saatva in some areas. It does—here’s where.

The Avocado Eco has the most sinkage, lowest motion transfer, and fastest response time among all four of these mattresses.

The Avocado Green has the advantage of the least amount of bounce. However, I will note here that “least” does not mean low bounce. All of these mattresses have high bounce. The average level is 9.57″ and even the Avocado Green has 11.54″—a full 2″ more bounce than the average.

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid is tied for the best cooling and also has the least amount of sinkage. If you’re looking for a mattress that you kind of float on top of and sleep cool throughout the night, the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid is a good choice.

Cooling Test

Considering cooling, both Saatva mattresses were cooler in our tests than both Avocado mattresses.

Avocado is by no means bad, but Saatva’s performance is simply exceptional.

Sinkage Test

With sinkage, there’s a wide range between these four mattresses.

Sinkage TestSinkage DepthMax Sinkage
Avocado EcoDeep2.48″
Avocado GreenModerate2.19″
Saatva ClassicDeep2.40″
Saatva Memory Foam HybridMinimal1.88″

For reference, the average level of sinkage across all mattresses tested to date is 2.20″.

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid has minimal sinkage, with a max depth of 1.88″.

For moderate sinkage, the Avocado Green has 2.19″ of max sinkage, just slightly below the average depth.

Both the Saatva Classic as well as the Avocado Eco have deep sinkage, between 2.40″ and 2.48″ of max sinkage. This is about 1/4″ greater than average

The images below show the sinkage depth for each mattress.

Saatva Classic

Avocado Eco

Sinkage is a preferential factor in many respects, as neither minimal nor deep sinkage is inherently good or bad. Your preferred sinkage level is largely dependent on your preferred sleeping position and body weight.

We’ll touch on that more in a bit down below.

Motion Transfer

Concerning motion transfer, Avocado takes a win with the performance of the Avocado Eco, but there were other solid scores on the board as well.

Motion Transfer TestScoreAcc. Range
Avocado Eco103.40 m/s²
Avocado Green9.47.31 m/s²
Saatva Classic9.85.86 m/s²
Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid8.710.11 m/s²

The average amount of motion transfer, based on all of our tests to date, is 4.79 m/s².

The Avocado Eco is the only mattress in this comparison with significantly less motion transfer than average, just 3.40 m/s², but there’s more to the story than just a flat number.

Avocado Eco edge support - sitting
Avocado Eco edge support – sitting

The Saatva Classic was slightly less than the average with 5.86 m/s² and the Avocado Green followed shortly after with 7.31 m/s².

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid was notably more than the average level of motion transfer, at 10.11 m/s².

NOTE: Most coil-based mattresses are going to struggle to get motion transfer below average, mainly because of the pushback that coils generate. Coils are designed to add bounce, fast response time, and in most cases higher levels of motion transfer as well.

Videos below show how motion is transferred across each mattress.

Saatva Classic Motion Transfer

Saatva motion transfer graph

On the Saatva Classic, there is quite a bit of motion at the initial drop and energy continues to carry across the mattress, slowly declining until all energy is absorbed. Now although this chart may look like a lot of motion, remember that this mattress is still a little better than average.

Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Motion Transfer

Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid motion transfer chart
Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid motion transfer chart

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid had similar energy levels at the initial drop, but on the Memory Foam Hybrid, this motion carries more intensely and for longer across the mattress than we saw on the Saatva Classic above.

Avocado Green Motion Transfer

Avocado Green motion transfer chart
Avocado Green motion transfer chart

The Avocado Green mattress had a high spike of energy initially and that energy really bounces around for almost 1.5 seconds. Energy is slowly absorbed and there are no dramatic drops of energy, but it does eventually get there.

Avocado Eco Motion Transfer

Avocado Eco motion transfer chart
Avocado Eco motion transfer chart

The Avocado Eco mattress is the only mattress in this 4-way comparison to create better than average levels of motion transfer. But I wouldn’t say that it’s great at absorbing energy.

The advantage of the Eco is that the energy from the initial drop is about 50% of the level generated by any of the other mattresses. But it does allow that energy to resonate across the mattress for over 1.5 seconds.

Response Test

All of these mattresses had very fast response times, every mattress being consistently faster than average.

Response TestScoreMostly RecoveredCompletely Recovered
Avocado Eco100.2 seconds0.3 seconds
Avocado Green100.3 seconds0.7 seconds
Saatva Classic100.4 seconds0.8 seconds
Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid100.3 seconds1.0 seconds

The average response time across all mattresses that we’ve tested to date is 0.56 seconds to be mostly recovered and 0.94 seconds to be fully recovered.

The absolute fastest in our tests was the Avocado Eco, being mostly recovered by 0.2 seconds and fully recovered by 0.3 seconds. Even the slowest mattress was still very fast—the Saatva Classic, which was mostly recovered by 0.4 seconds and fully recovered by 0.8 seconds.

You can see these material responses in real time in the video below.

Bounce Test

Both Saatva and Avocado create mattresses with high bounce, but Saatva has slightly more bounce than Avocado.

All four of these mattresses are well beyond the average level with anywhere from 11.5″ – 14.6″ of bounce.

Considering the fact that all of these mattresses are hybrids, these results aren’t hugely surprising.

Coils are known for generating more bounce and creating an active and engaging sleep surface.

Bounce levels can be viewed in real-time via the short video clips below.

Edge Support Test

On Saatva, edge support was exceptional on the Saatva Classic, Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid, and Avocado Green. The Avocado Eco was not far behind either.

Sex Test

Our sex rating formula looks at 5 different factors weighted based on their importance.

sex percent chart

All factors are not equal in terms of significance, but each plays an important role.

Here’s a look at the numerical breakdown of each factor:

sex formula

We use the scores from all factors, plugged into the formula, to derive a sex score for each mattress.

Between Saatva vs. Avocado, all of the mattresses are fantastic for sex.

Sex TestSex ScoreBounceEdge SupportNoisePressure ReliefCooling
Avocado Eco9.7109.49.09.59.5
Avocado Green9.8109.99.09.09.5
Saatva Classic9.910109.01010
Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid9.8109.89.09.510

These mattresses all have high levels of bounce, excellent (or exceptional) edge support, good pressure relief, and good cooling.

You really can’t go wrong with any of these mattresses, but for the absolute best for sex performance, stick to the Saatva Classic. This mattress scored the highest marks across the board in all 5 categories for sex performance.

Pressure Relief Test

For the best pressure relief, Saatva is the winner, but Avocado is not far behind.

Pressure Relief TestScoreComfort LayerSupport Layer
Avocado Eco9.52.0″8.0″
Avocado Green9.02.0″9.0″
Saatva Classic104.5″7.0″
Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid9.52.5″9.0″

Concerning pressure relief, we’re looking at the thickness of the comfort layer and the support layer. Other secondary factors include material quality and mattress firmness.

Among these mattresses, the Saatva Classic has the thickest comfort layer (4.5″), a plush Euro-style cover, and high-quality materials. Even without knowing anything else about this mattress, this is a winning recipe for excellent pressure relief.

Saatva - sinkage (body weight)
Saatva – sinkage (body weight)

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid and Avocado Eco mattresses have thinner comfort layers, only 2 – 2.5″ but the pressure relief was still fantastic.

On mattresses where the comfort layer is thinner, they can still have fantastic pressure relief if they have thicker support layers or advanced top layers, which are designed specifically for pressure relief (ie: zoned support systems).

Off-Gassing Test

Off-gassing is a minimal issue for all four of these mattresses.

Off-Gassing TestScoreInitial SmellOff-Gassing Period
Avocado Eco9.9Minor1 day
Avocado Green9.9Strong1 day
Saatva Classic10None0 days
Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid10None0 days

Saatva ships uncompressed so it arrived with zero off-gassing odor. Avocado is compressed, but being natural latex, it doesn’t have the strong fumes sometimes associated with other foam-based mattresses.

Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid relaxing
Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid relaxing

The Avocado Eco had a minor smell out of the box and the Avocado Green had a strong smell, but the smell was a more natural odor and not a harsh chemical odor. Both smells dissipated within a single day.

What is off-gassing?

Off-gassing is the process that happens when fumes are released by the mattress after unboxing. The average off-gassing period is about 3.5 days (across all mattresses that we’ve tested to date).

Company

Comparing the terms and conditions between Saatva vs. Avocado it’s a pretty similar story. Saatva’s lifetime warranty is a nice advantage, but the $99 return fee for Saatva is a mark against against them.

Firmness

Moving along, let’s talk about firmness. All of these mattresses come in a medium / medium-firm feel.

FirmnessRatingLabelRead Review

Support & Sleeping Positions

Both Saatva and Avocado offer firmnesses that fall in a range that would be suitable for a wide range of sleepers. If you’re not sure which firmness is right for you, here are some quick guidelines you can follow.

what firmness is right for you

Generally speaking, lighter sleepers prefer a softer mattress than heavier sleepers. And side sleepers prefer a softer mattress than stomach or back sleepers.

If you’re a lightweight side sleeper, I would opt for the Saatva Classic soft.

If you’re a heavier-weighted back or stomach sleeper, I would opt for the Saatva Classic firm.

If you fall anywhere else in the middle, the Saatva Classic Luxury Firm, Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid, Avocado Eco, or Avocado Green would likely be good choices for you.

Design

Both Saatva and Avocado have hybrid mattresses, but the style of each mattress varies.

The table below lists the major differences including material, thickness, and the mattress cover.

DesignMaterialThickness
Avocado GreenLatex foam + coils11″
Avocado EcoLatex foam + coils10″
Saatva ClassicCoil-on-coil 11.5″ or 14.5″
Saatva Memory Foam HybridMemory foam + coils11.5″

The Saatva Classic is a coil-on-coil mattress with a plush, Euro-style cover.

On the other hand, the Avocado Green, Avocado Eco, and Saatva Memory Foam are all classic hybrids. The main difference between these three is the exact type of foam.

  • Avocado Green: Latex foam
  • Avocado Eco: Latex foam
  • Saatva Memory Foam: Memory foam

Which Mattress Should You Buy?

Both Saatva and Avocado are suitable for a wide range of sleeper preferences. So which one is right for you? Let’s review some of the highlights below on when you may want to buy each mattress and who it is made for.

Should You Buy the Saatva Classic?

I would recommend the Saatva Classic if you’re looking for:

  • Luxury feel. The Saatva Classic has a plush, Euro-style cover and is the highest-performing mattress in this comparison. For a truly luxury feel that doesn’t skimp on performance, the Saatva Classic is a solid pick.
  • Deeper sinkage. If you are looking for deeper sinkage, the Saatva Classic fits the bill, without sacrificing cooling or response time.

Click here to learn more or to check the price of the Saatva Classic mattress.

Should You Buy the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid?

I would recommend the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid if you’re looking for:

  • Less sinkage. The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid has the plush feel of a quilted cover, but less sinkage than the Saatva Classic. This mattress marries the benefits of coils with the benefits of memory foam.
  • Best cooling. This mattress is also tied for the best cooling, which is a little unusual for memory foam as memory foam tends to retain heat more than latex foam.

Click here to learn more or to check the price of the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid mattress.

Should You Buy the Avocado Green?

I would recommend the Avocado Green if you’re looking for:

  • Less bounce. The Avocado Green has the least amount of bounce among all mattresses in this comparison. If you’re looking for a latex hybrid, but don’t want the extremely high bounce that is often associated with latex hybrids, the Avocado Green could be a good option.
  • Trial + warranty. This mattress has a 365-night and 25-year warranty. By comparison, the Avocado Eco only has a 100-night trial and a 10-year warranty. Opting for the Green over the Eco, is a solid way to get the Avocado name and performance, but also a little extra security if you’re worried about mattress quality long-term.

Click here to learn more or to check the price of the Avocado Green mattress.

Should You Buy the Avocado Eco?

I would recommend the Avocado Eco if you’re looking for:

  • More sinkage. If you like the feeling of sinking deeper into a mattress, consider the Avocado Eco. This mattress has the most sinkage among all four mattresses compared here.
  • Fast response. The response time of the Avocado Eco was among the fastest we’ve seen (across all mattresses we’ve tested to date).
