How is Tempurpedic Luxe Adapt Different?

The Tempurpedic Luxe Adapt is a 13.25″ memory foam hybrid mattress with an overall performance level that is better than average, but a price that is also over twice as expensive as the average mattress.

Advantages

Advantages of the Tempurpedic Luxe Adapt include better cooling performance, great motion isolation, fantastic edge support, and exceptional pressure relief as well.

This mattress has a 4.75″ comfort layer and is 13.25″ thick, both metrics being thicker than average.

Lastly, this mattress has slightly faster off-gassing than average (2 days faster).

Neutral Factors

The Luxe Adapt has moderate sinkage and very low levels of bounce. It has that classic memory foam feel. If you like a more dramatic contour and the viscoelasticity of traditional memory foam, this mattress could be a great fit.

But if you’re looking for fast response time and a more active feel, you will likely be disappointed.

Disadvantages

Specific disadvantages of the Tempurpedic Luxe Adapt include a significantly slower material response time and a weaker sex score. It has very low bounce, which isn’t doing the mattress any favors for intimacy.

Lastly, the company score is also well below average, primarily due to the shorter than average trial period and expensive return fee.

The Tempurpedic Luxe Adapt has outstanding cooling. During our tests, I did not experience any significant level of heat retention around my body.

This mattress achieves its fantastic cooling through multiple material and design choices. First up, we have a thin, non-quilted cover that has a cool-to-the-touch feel.

Tempurpedic doesn’t provide much information as to exactly how it achieves the cool feel, but based on my tests of other similar covers, I would think it’s using either phase change materials and/or specialized cooling fibers.

• Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
• Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
• Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

In any case, the cover has a cool feel and it maintains much of that cooler feel for the duration of our cooling tests. In addition, the memory foam is ventilated, which helps improve breathability and better resists heat retention.

Lastly, we have the hybrid design, meaning more airflow for the mattress at large.

In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 89.8° F. This is 0.5° cooler than the average of 90.3° F, based on all of our tests to date.

After getting off the mattress, the temperature declined by 2.5 degrees from minutes 0 to 1, which is 2.3 degrees less cool than the average 0 to 1 minute decline of 4.8 degrees.

When we consider the combination of objective data, my subjective experiences, and an analysis of the materials, I’m confident in my view that cooling is outstanding.

The Tempurpedic Luxe Adapt has moderate sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 2.27″. This is 0.02″ more sinkage than the average sinkage depth of 2.25″, based on all of our tests to date.

The mattress creates a dramatic body-contouring hug. Among all mattress brands we’ve tested, perhaps none is as consistent in their feel as Tempurpedic.

The Luxe Adapt has the same expected classic Tempurpedic memory foam feel. The memory foam allows the body to sink into it and then creates a dramatic, exacting, and precise hugging sensation around the body. This feel is able to deliver incredible pressure relief and comfort.

That being said, it’s also a more polarizing feel. Because the body-contouring hug is so significant, some sleepers may find it’s excessive, creating a stuck feel. Nevertheless, for those sleepers who do enjoy the classic memory foam feel, the pressure relief and comfort it creates is next level.

The Tempurpedic Luxe Adapt has a very low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 6.15 m/s². This is 30% less motion transfer than the average of 8.80 m/s².

The lower motion transfer is a product of the thick memory foam, which has slower material recovery speed, and significantly lower-than-average bounce. This combination of material and feel factors is able to create incredibly low motion transfer.

In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.25 seconds. Motion declines dramatically immediately thereafter.

By 0.47 seconds, we’ve returned to near-zero levels of energy, which is 0.45 seconds shorter than the average motion duration of 0.92 seconds. Both the motion intensity and motion duration are considerably better than average.

Memory foam does a great job at mitigating, absorbing, and reducing motion transfer. This is especially true when the memory foam has a slower material recovery speed, which is true here.

The Tempurpedic Luxe Adapt uses three different memory foam layers and they are working together to deliver incredibly low motion transfer. I expect most sleepers will find this level of motion transfer to be exceedingly low.

The Tempurpedic Luxe Adapt has a very slow material response.

In our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 1.0 seconds, which is 0.58 seconds slower than the average of 0.42 seconds, based on all of our tests to date. In our fully recovered responsiveness test, we measured a recovery speed of 1.8 seconds, which is 0.77 seconds slower than the average of 1.03 seconds.

Tempurpedic is known for its memory foam that creates a deep, dramatic, and exacting hug around the body. Part of what creates this hug is a slower material recovery speed.

While the slower responsiveness can be beneficial for those who enjoy a deeper, more pronounced body hug, it also negatively impacts ease of movement. A slower material recovery speed can cause some sleepers to feel “stuck” in the mattress and simply makes it harder to move around on the mattress, change positions, and get in and out of bed.

Compared to the average among all mattress tests, the Luxe Adapt is considerably worse. The Luxe Adapt is in the bottom 11% for full material recovery speed. If ease of movement is important to you at all, a classic memory foam mattress may simply not be the right choice for you.

To be fair, this isn’t a problem with Tempurpedic specifically, but rather any memory foam or memory foam hybrid mattress that uses a more classic memory foam.

The Tempurpedic Luxe Adapt has a very low level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 5.10″. This is 3.54″ less bounce than the average of 8.64″, based on all of our tests to date.

The lower bounce level is a product of the thick memory foam comfort layer; in addition, that memory foam has a more classic feel and slower material recovery speed.

This combination of factors creates less resiliency and very little springiness in the mattress. As a result, there just isn’t much energy available to create more bounce.

The lower bounce is hugely beneficial for lowering motion transfer. However, the lower bounce is also the reason that sex performance and ease of movement is worse.

The Tempurpedic Luxe Adapt has outstanding sitting edge support and outstanding lying edge support.

In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 2.75″. This is 1.09″ less sitting sinkage than the average of 3.84″, based on all of our tests to date.

While lying directly on the edge of the mattress, I felt that the support was outstanding in all sleeping positions. This mattress is equipped with reinforced edge support foam that runs along the entire perimeter of the mattress.

That reinforcing foam is 6.5” tall and clearly has a significant impact on both sitting and lying edge support.

Oftentimes we see memory foam mattresses struggle more with edge support, as the body-contouring nature of memory foam can weaken the supportive feel at the edge. However, that wasn’t the case here.

The combination of reinforcing edge support foam with incredible material quality works together to create truly impressive edge support.

The Tempurpedic Luxe Adapt has fair sex performance. The sex performance is most rare on this mattress, as we see the Luxe Adapt earning perfect 10 out of 10 scores in 4 of our 5 testing factors.

This mattress created minimal noise and has outstanding pressure relief, cooling, and edge support. With just 2.75” of sitting edge sinkage, the edge is supportive, extending the usable surface area of the mattress.

While we saw incredible performance in these 4 categories, the same cannot be said for the last category, bounce. The Luxe Adapt has just 5.10” of bounce. This is significantly less bounce than average.

When it comes to sex, more bounce is almost always better. The lower level of bounce makes sex more strenuous, more tiring, and just less fun. To be clear, lower bounce and worse sex is not a specific Tempurpedic problem.

Most memory foam and memory foam hybrid mattresses struggle with bounce, which means they also struggle with sex. If amorous activities are a priority for you, then you’ll likely want to avoid a memory foam mattress.

The Tempurpedic Luxe Adapt has an outstanding level of pressure relief. During our tests, I did not feel any significant level of pressure point buildup on my body. Quite the opposite, the Luxe Adapt is an incredibly comfortable mattress.

The mattress is equipped with 4.75″ of comfort material, which is 0.37″ more comfort material than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.38″, based on all of our tests to date.

The Luxe Adapt uses Tempurpedic’s tried-and-true high-density memory foam. Those foams create a moderate to deep sinkage and a classic memory foam feel. The feel is a hugging sensation that is dramatic and exacting along the precise shape of your body.

The thin, non-quilted cover helps to create a more immediate and direct hugging feel around the body. Some sleepers really love that feel, while others may feel it creates a “stuck” or “trapped” in the mattress feel.

For those who enjoy the feel, the Luxe Adapt is able to deliver truly next-level pressure relief and comfort. In our objective pressure mapping tests, we measured a max PSI of 0.39, which is well within the 1.0 PSI threshold I ideally want to see.

When I consider our objective pressure mapping tests, material thickness, material quality, and my subjective experience on the mattress, I’m confident most sleepers will find the pressure relief to be outstanding.

The Tempurpedic Luxe Adapt had a strong smell upon the initial arrival. The mattress smelled for 6 days. This is 1.6 days shorter than the average smell duration of 7.6 days.

Tempurpedic has been around for over 30 years and is known for high-end luxury memory foam mattresses. However, many parts of its company policies were lacking when compared to many other mattress brands we’ve tested.

The brand offers a 90-night trial period and a 10-year warranty. Shipping is free, but if you don’t love the mattress, it’ll cost you $175 to return the mattress.

Return fees are fairly uncommon, with only 18% of mattresses we’ve tested charging a return fee. Of those brands that do charge a return fee, Tempurpedic is one of the most expensive at $175.

Comparing 121+ brands tested to date, the average trial period is 195 nights, 95 nights more than Tempurpedic offers. The average warranty is 13 years, which is 3 years more than this mattress. Of course, this excludes the 43% of mattresses that offer lifetime warranties.

The Tempurpedic Luxe Adapt comes in three different firmness options—Soft, Medium Hybrid, and Firm. The Soft and Firm versions are both all-foam designs, as opposed to the hybrid design in the middle option.

Soft Version

We did not personally test the Soft version first-hand, but we estimate it would have a 4 out of 10 rating, where 10 is the most firm. Again, as stated above, this is an all-foam mattress, not a memory foam hybrid.

Medium Hybrid Version

We did test the Medium Hybrid version for this review, and it had a medium-firm feel that comes in at a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale.

For the vast majority of sleepers, this version will provide the right mix of support and pressure relief.

Firm Version

We also haven’t tested the Firm version, but we estimate that it would come in at an 8 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

This is based on my analysis of the design in comparison to the version we did test. Like the soft version, I will reiterate that this is an all-foam version, not a memory foam hybrid.

Support on the Tempurpedic Luxe Adapt is outstanding. During our tests, I felt well supported in all sleeping positions.

The mattress is equipped with an 8.5″ support layer. This is 0.52″ thicker than the average support layer thickness of 7.98″, based on all of our tests to date.

Mattresses that create the best support are able to deliver a neutral spinal alignment and also create ample pressure relief. The Luxe Adapt easily cleared both of those requirements.

This mattress is available in 3 firmness levels—soft, medium-hybrid, and firm. The medium-hybrid is a hybrid design (foam on top of coils, while the soft and firm versions are all foam). We tested the medium hybrid and found it has a medium-firm feel, 6 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm.

In my view, the medium hybrid will be the best choice for the vast majority of sleepers. Medium-firm feels work well for all sleeping positions and the vast majority of sleepers.

In all mattress tests, we make it a point to cut the mattress open to assess the material quality. In doing so, I’m pleased with what we measured. Tempurpedic’s comfort foam density ranges from 2.47 to 5.46 PCF, with the majority being 5.19 to 5.46 PCF.

While the 2.47 PCF top layer is a little south of what I ideally like to see, the other layers are well within the excellent quality tier that I look for. Higher density foams typically perform better, lasts longer, and sag less.

These foam layers, especially when combined with a thin, non-quilted cover, create the right material conditions that will allow the mattress to perform better for a longer duration than most other mattresses we’ve tested.

Lastly, the Luxe Adapt uses a 15-gauge coil, which is a reasonably thick wire. Overall, I’m pleased with the material specs we measured.

Based on all of my tests to date, an analysis of the materials, and my subjective experiences, I’m confident that most sleepers will find the support on the Tempurpedic Luxe Adapt to be outstanding.

Within the Tempurpedic brand, the collections break down into a few different categories—Cloud, Adapt, Luxe, and Breeze. There are different combinations of these lineups (ie: Luxe Adapt, Luxe Breeze, etc.)

The Luxe Adapt is a mid-tier model, more advanced than the standard Tempurpedic Adapt, but lacking the cooling technology of the pricier Breeze models.

The Tempurpedic Luxe Adapt is 13.25″ thick and contains a combination of memory foam, coils, and support foam. From top to bottom, here is a full list of the materials used in this mattress:

The Tempurpedic Luxe Adapt has a similar cover to what we saw on the Pro Adapt memory foam mattress.

It is thin, removable, and you can wash it in a standard washing machine for a cleaner sleeping surface.

If you downgrade to the standard Tempurpedic Adapt, the cover is not removable.

The comfort layer is 4.75″ thick and made of three layers of foam below the cover. First, there is a 1.25″ memory foam layer, followed by a thicker 2.5″ memory foam layer.

The last foam within the comfort layer is a 1.0″ memory foam. This is the densest foam among all three foams, so it’s acting a bit as a transitional material between comfort and support.

The support layer is 8.50″ thick and made of a 7.25″ pocketed coil system followed by a 1.25″ support foam base.

Product Evolution

The Tempurpedic Luxe Adapt officially hit the market in July 2018 (at Las Vegas Market, a major mattress trade show). The Luxe Adapt is the top tier within the Adapt collection. There are the Tempurpedic Adapt and Pro Adapt, priced at lower tiers and with more basic designs, presumably with lower performance as well.

In 2024, the original Luxe Adapt was effectively discontinued, and the next-generation Luxe Adapt was released around March 2024.

This change introduced a Soft and Firm version of the Luxe Adapt as well the hybrid version (which we tested in this review).

Previously, the Tempurpedic Luxe Adapt was only an all-foam memory foam mattress; there was no hybrid version.
