Our Verdict

The WinkBed is a popular hybrid mattress known for its plush pillow top and has long been the highest-scoring model we’ve tested. This flagship mattress is available in four distinct firmness options—Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus—allowing you to hone in on your preferred feel and support needs.

NapLab has tested all 4 versions and their firmness ranges from soft (4) to firm (8). Due to their distinct pillow top design, all versions have relatively low levels of bounce and offer deep to very deep sinkage.

The Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer options of the WinkBed mattress are all the same price, coming in at $1,799 for a queen size. The Plus is more expensive at $1,999 for a queen size, due to the design improvements that are tuned for heavier bodies.

The WinkBed Softer has the softest feel with a 4 out of 10 rating. While it performs worse for sex, it also has the lowest motion transfer by a significant margin (due to the softer feel better mitigating energy transfer).

The WinkBed Luxury Firm is the most popular version, as it comes with the medium-firm feel that is suitable for the widest range of sleepers. It has better edge support than the Softer version as well as a higher sex score.

The WinkBed Firmer is the most firm option available and it has a firm feel, 8 out of 10 on our firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm. It offers the least sinkage depth and has a higher degree of pushback on the body.

The WinkBed Plus closely follows the Luxury Firm layer sequence, with the main difference being reinforced materials for heavier bodies. It still has that widely appealing medium-firm feel, only with more support and the thickest design among all versions.

Which Mattress Should You Buy?

Looking at the WinkBed, there are a few different factors to take into consideration here. There are four different variations of this mattress:

  1. Winkbed Softer
  2. Winbked Luxury Firm
  3. Winkbed Firmer
  4. Winkbed Plus

All four of these versions have deeper sinkage and a plush pillow top cover. They also all have the option to upgrade to a more advanced cooling cover (Frost cover).

Overall performance does vary slightly from model to model. That being said, the slight variation in overall performance of each firmness level is not reason enough to pick one firmness over another. Your ideal firmness should be based on personal preference, sleeping position, and body weight.

So how do you know which is right for you?

While the WinkBed Softer technically has the highest overall performance, it won’t be right for every sleeper. The softer version does the best job of limiting motion transfer, but makes some sacrifices regarding edge support. The softer feel also provides deeper sinkage and less bounce, which in turn hurts the sex performance of this mattress. A softer feel is typically only ideal for exclusive side sleepers and even then, not all exclusive side sleepers need a soft feel.

The WinkBed Luxury Firm has a more balanced feel. Motion transfer levels were similar to what we measured on the WinkBed Firmer and WinkBed Plus, and the sex performance was better than on the Softer version as well. The vast majority of sleepers will be best served by the luxury firm version.

The WinkBed Firmer could be an attractive choice for exclusive back or stomach sleepers and/or those who really love a firm feel.

For sleepers over 300 lbs, the WinkBed Plus is the best option, which provides a higher degree of support and also the thickest profile among all four versions. Sleepers over 250 pounds should also strongly consider the Winkbed Plus.

Compare the Mattresses

We tested each firmness option from WinkBed and they all have extremely similar, incredibly high performance ranging from 9.45 to 9.52. To be clear, all of these WinkBed firmness options are well within the top 1% of scores across the 470+ mattresses tested to date.

From a price perspective, the Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer options all have a queen-size price of $1,799. The Plus costs an additional $200 dollars, coming in at $1,999.

The table below shows the overall performance score of each WinkBed mattress. In total, 4 mattresses were tested for this comparison.

Firmness

The flagship WinkBed mattress comes in four distinct options, which they call Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus. These options range from 4 to 8 on the firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm.

The Softer option is rated as a distinctly soft feel at a 4 out of 10, whereas the Firmer option has a firm feel at a 8 out of 10. Both the Luxury Firm and Plus versions are rated at a 6 out of 10.

Typically, plus-sized models (for sleepers over 250 pounds, but especially those over 300 pounds) tend to be on the firmer side, but that’s not what we see here. Rather than increasing the firmness, the WinkBed Plus still uses a similar, if not identical, pillow top cover, which gives it a fairly balanced, medium-firm feel while still offering reinforced support.

Not sure which firmness you need? Your ideal mattress firmness depends on two major factors—sleeping position and body weight. With the right firmness, your body and spine will maintain proper alignment when sleeping.

Lightweight sleepers or those who sleep on their side tend to need a softer mattress. By comparison, heavier sleepers or those who sleep on their back or stomach tend to need more support and a firmer feel.

Cooling Test

All WinkBed mattresses have outstanding cooling. All 4 firmness versions measured below average max temperatures and earned a perfect 10/10 cooling score.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding cooling.

Cooling TestScoreBaselineMax. Temp.Ending Temp.
WinkBed Softer1077.3°89.0°82.4°
WinkBed Luxury Firm1074.9°87.8°78.5°
WinkBed Firmer1079.8°89.3°81.6°
WinkBed Plus1078.7°89.6°80.4°
  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (after 5 minutes) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

Below, you can watch a video of how the heat dissipates on each mattress during our cooling test. For this test, we lie on the mattress for 15 minutes, get off the mattress, and then take periodic surface-level temperature measurements.

WinkBed Softer

WinkBed Plus

WinkBed Luxury Firm

WinkBed Firmer

The average cooling score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6, which makes the WinkBed models significantly better than the average mattress.

In fact, WinkBed offers an upgraded “Frost” cover for even better cooling performance. The cover is woven with cooling fibers, and they create a notably cool-to-the-touch feel. We tested the Frost cover on the luxury firm version and it did make a notable cooling impact.

While the Frost cover wasn’t needed to achieve our highest rating, it can be a worthwhile addition if you’re looking to get the absolute best WinkBed has to offer.

Sinkage Test

All WinkBed versions offer sleepers some level of “deep” sinkage. This is largely due to the pillowtop cover that is included in every option and is fundamental to the WinkBed feel.

The Firmer option is the most restrained sinkage depth, with a rating of simply deep, followed by very deep ratings for the Luxury Firm and Plus versions. Finally, the WinkBed Softer holds the crown for deepest sinkage by offering a good deal more sinkage than the other options.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding sinkage.

WinkBed Luxury Firm

Winkbed Sinkage Test

WinkBed Firmer

Winkbed Firmer Sinkage Test

The average sinkage depth across all mattresses tested to date is 2.22″. Compared to this standard, all firmness variants of the WinkBed offer substantially deeper sinkage depths. However, the poly foam (specifically, Serene foam) balances this hug around the body so that it feels less dramatic than a traditional memory foam.

Because of the deep to extremely deep sinkage levels, the WinkBed tends to be better suited for side sleepers than for those who prefer exclusively sleeping on their back and stomach. This is especially true for the WinkBed Softer version.

Are you over 300 lbs.? Heavier sleepers generally need a mattress with a firmer feel to maintain optimal support. If you find yourself over 300+ lbs, I would definitely recommend sticking with the WinkBed Plus. While the Plus version is not strictly firmer than the others, its design includes reinforced materials to support heavier bodies. Sleepers over 250 pounds can also consider the Winbked Plus.

Motion Transfer Test

The WinkBed offers low to exceptionally low levels of motion transfer. The plush pillow top, thick poly foam layers, and pocketed coils do a great job isolating and diminishing energy as it moves from one side to the other. However, there is a clear standout model.

The WinkBed Softer was considerably better than the other three options of the WinkBed mattress in terms of motion transfer. The softer feel mitigates and reduces energy more than the other firmness versions, thereby creating less motion transfer.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding motion transfer.

WinkBed Softer

WinkBed Plus

WinkBed Luxury Firm

WinkBed Firmer

The average motion transfer score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.2. By this standard, all WinkBed options are better than average, which is expected from their design.

With a score of 8.5, the WinkBed Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus should all be suitable for most couples, especially if higher bounce for sex is preferable. But those looking for the absolute best chance to avoid waking their sleeping partner, the WinkBed Softer is the way to go.

Response Test

When it comes to response, again we see all WinkBed models perform extremely well, but there are differences between the firmness options.

We see all versions achieve near-instant response time measurements for the “mostly recovered” test.

Where we see differences between the versions is with the “fully recovered” test. Even here, the variance is only from 0.4 seconds to 0.9 seconds. These differences can be explained by the relative softness, sinkage depth, and slight material characteristic differences from firmness to firmness.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding response.

WinkBed Plus9.90.2 seconds0.4 seconds

The level of responsiveness for each mattress is documented in the videos below.

WinkBed Softer

WinkBed Plus

WinkBed Luxury Firm

WinkBed Firmer

The average response score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.7, with the average mostly recovered time at 0.43 seconds and average fully recovered time at 1.03 seconds.

Based on these averages, the WinkBed models are all notably faster. This means you should never feel stuck in a crater when shifting positions or getting out of bed.

Due to the pushback designed for heavier bodies, the WinkBed Plus is technically the fastest version in terms of overall material response.

Bounce Test

The four WinkBed versions all offer relatively low levels of bounce. That same pillow top layer that is beneficial for pressure relief, low motion transfer, and offering deep sinkage notably restricts bounce.

While we do see some variance between options, the range of bounce levels is from low to just barely into the moderate range on one version, Firmer.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding bounce.

The level of bounce for each mattress is documented in the videos below.

WinkBed Softer

WinkBed Plus

WinkBed Luxury Firm

WinkBed Firmer

The average bounce across all mattresses tested to date is 8.63″. Based on this, the WinkBed, in all its forms, has less bounce than average.

The two primary drivers for the variance we see are the thickness of the comfort layer and the firmness level. This is why the WinkBed Firmer offers the most bounce.

Mattresses with more bounce are better for ease of movement and increase sex performance. However, higher bounce also typically creates a higher level of motion transfer. So there are pros and cons when it comes to bounce.

Edge Support Test

When it comes to edge support, the four WinkBed firmness options range from excellent to outstanding. These scores are derived based on measurements of sitting edge compression and an assessment of lying support at the edge.

Based on these criteria, the only version that did not earn a perfect score is the Softer model, which makes sense, given that the softer feel allows for deeper sinakge more broadly on the mattress. And we see that deeper sinkage extending to the edge.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding edge support.

WinkBed Luxury Firm

Winkbed Edge Support Test

WinkBed Firmer

Winkbed Firmer Edge Support Test

The average edge support score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.7. Compared to that, even the Softer version is superior.

This is due to the 2 rows of reinforced edge coils that run along both sides of the WinkBed mattress (all versions). We measured these coils at 13.5 gauge thick, which is a fairly thick wire. So, despite the variance shown by softer and / or thicker comfort layers, these thick coils make the largest impact on edge support.

This means using the side of the bed to put on footwear, sleeping all the way to the edge due to a tyrannical sleeping partner, or amorous activities are all comfortable and safe on any version of the Winkbed.

Sex Test

When it comes to sex, this is the largest category with which the WinkBed versions struggle. As you can see from the table that makes up our sex score below, the WinkBed does not have high levels of bounce.

This low bounce greatly impacts the overall sex score, as it is weighted at 60% of the score. The WinkBed Luxury Firm and the WinkBed Firmer options are the best models in terms of bounce, while sharing nearly identical scores for the other categories.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding sex.

Sex TestSex ScoreBounceEdge SupportNoisePressure ReliefCooling
WinkBed Softer7.56.59.1101010
WinkBed Luxury Firm8.37.410101010
WinkBed Firmer8.47.510101010
WinkBed Plus7.66.310101010

The average sex score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.2. This means both the Luxury Firm and Firmer options manage to score just above this average mark, while the Softer and Plus options are well below it.

The deeper sinkage of the Soft version greatly absorbs energy, thereby restricting bounce. Similarly, the novel design of the Plus version is also restricting energy. The same materials that create more robust support for heavier bodies aren’t ideal for bounce.

All factors considered, it’s fair to say sex on the luxury firm and firmer versions are good, but not amazing, while the softer and plus versions leave something to be notable desired.

Pressure Relief Test

When it comes to pressure relief, the WinkBed is back showcasing its strengths, as, once again, every version of this mattress earned a perfect score.

Despite the variances between designs, the Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and WinkBed Plus all met the threshold for outstanding pressure relief. Even so, one’s individual comfort must factor in their personal firmness preference.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding pressure relief.

WinkBed Luxury Firm104.50″9.00″
WinkBed Firmer104.75″9.00″

The average pressure relief score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6, with the average comfort layer coming in at 4.39″. Again, the four versions of the WinkBed all exceed this benchmark.

The materials included in each mattress are documented in the images below.

The thickness of the comfort material isn’t everything. Nuances to the firmness of each foam, layering of materials, and density of foam can all make or break overall comfort.

The versions of the WinkBed are all tweaked along these factors to both deliver a distinctly different firmness rating while providing top-tier comfort and support. When it comes to pressure relief it just doesn’t get much better than this.

Off-Gassing Test

Now let’s talk about off-gassing. This is another area where the WinkBed has an advantage over the standard mattress. During our testing of the four WinkBed firmness options, the longest any of them had a detectable odor was 2 days.

On top of that, some of the models came unboxed with a less-than-strong odor that some may barely even perceive. This is substantially better than average in both duration and intensity.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding off-gassing.

Off-Gassing TestScoreInitial SmellSmell Duration
WinkBed Softer9.4Minimal2 days
WinkBed Luxury Firm9.7Moderate1 day
WinkBed Firmer9.4Strong2 days
WinkBed Plus9.7Strong1 day

The average smell duration across all mattresses tested to date is 7 days, and nearly all mattresses arrive with a strong smell post-unboxing. If you’re someone who worries about synthetic odors lingering in your home after ordering new furniture, the WinkBed models are some of your best options.

Company

Lastly, let’s review WinkBed’s company policies in the most impactful terms that will affect consumers. Whether you choose the WinkBed Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, or Plus option, these company policies are the same.

First, shipping and returns are free. However, the one caveat is if you need to make an exchange it’ll cost $49 (IE, exchange one firmness for another).

Next, WinkBed offers a 120-night trial period and a lifetime warranty. While this warranty period is better than the average, the trial period is about 65 nights less than the average across all our mattress reviews.

Finally, WinkBed offers a one-time 50% lifetime replacement option for those looking to exchange for another firmness or simply want a new model after the trial period ends. That’s a nice option to have if something goes wrong with the mattress that isn’t covered by the warranty.
