Our Verdict

Each of these Winkbed mattresses are high-quality options with fantastic scores in our performance tests. They offer excellent cooling, fast response time, excellent pressure relief, and fast off-gassing.

The Winkbed Luxury Firm has very low motion transfer, while the WinkBed Soft and Plus were a bit higher. Edge support was fantastic on the Luxury Firm and the Plus, but a little worse on the Winkbed Soft (likely due to the softer feel).

The Winkbed soft is best for lighter weight sleepers, but especially lightweight side sleepers.

The Winkbed Luxury firm is a well balanced mattress suitable to the needs of most sleepers. If you’re just looking for a balanced, medium feel, this is it. Works great for all but the heaviest body types and all sleeping positions.

The firm Winkbed is better for back and stomach sleeper, but especially if you’re over 250 pounds.

Lastly, the Winkbed Plus is ideal for heavier body types over 300 pounds. It’s suitable to all sleeping positions for heavier bodies.

Between these mattresses, the original Winkbed hybrid won or tied in 11 testing categories.

The Winkbed Plus won or tied in 4 categories including best cooling, slowest response, least bounce, and best pressure relief.

The soft mattress won or tied in 5 categories, with a standout performance for the most sinkage.

These results make the Winkbed Luxury Firm our overall winner.

This comparison is best on our tests of the Winkbed soft, Winkbed luxury firm, and Winkbed Plus. We have not yet tested the Winkbed firm, so we don’t have as much comparative data for that mattress.

Cooling Test

The cooling performance on all of the Winkbed mattresses was fantastic.

Cooling TestScoreBaselineMax TempEnding Temp
WinkBed Soft1085.4°89.7°86.8°
Winkbed Lux Firm1084.0°90.3°87.6°
Winkbed Plus1085.3°89.3°85.2°
  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (after 5 minutes) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

The hybrid combination of the pocketed coils as well as the breathable foam made these mattresses comfortable to lie on. During the cooling tests I did not notice any major heat retention or cooling issues.

You can check out the thermal footage from each mattress below. In these tests, I lie on each mattress and then take temperature measurements over a 5 minute period.

This footage helps to highlight areas where the mattress stays warmer or other isolated hot spots.

Sinkage Test

The sinkage levels on the Winkbed mattresses were all deeper than the average amount of sinkage we typically see.

Sinkage TestSinkage DepthMax Sinkage
Winkbed SoftExtremely Deep3.16″
Winkbed Lux FirmDeep2.38″
Winkbed PlusDeep2.50″

Based on all of our tests to date, the average level of sinkage is 2.2″.

Images below show the level of sinkage for each mattress.

Soft

WinkBed Soft sinkage test

Luxury Firm

WinkBed sinkage test

Plus

WinkBed Plus Sinkage Test

As you can see, the Winkbed Soft has the most sinkage thanks to the plush cover and softer firmness.

The Winkbed Plus also has a plush cover, which gives it a deeper sinkage, despite its firmer feel.

The Winkbed Luxury Firm has 2.38″ of sinkage, or just slightly beyond average.

Although we didn’t personally test it, I would assume that the Winkbed Firm would have the least amount of sinkage among these four mattresses. It has the firmest feel and lacks the added plushness of the thicker cover like on the Winkbed Plus.

Motion Transfer

The motion transfer of the Winkbed Luxury Firm is about equal to the average amount of motion transfer we have seen from other mattresses tested to date.

Motion Transfer TestScoreAcc. Range
Winkbed Soft8.99.50 m/s²
Winkbed Lux Firm9.85.85 m/s²
Winkbed Plus8.89.67 m/s²

For reference (based on all of our mattress tests to date), the average amount of motion transfer is 5.83 m/s².

Both the Winkbed Soft and Winkbed Plus experienced almost twice the amount of motion transfer, 9.50 m/s² or greater.

The level of motion transfer is documented in the videos below. The graphs which follow each video visualize the data from our accelerometer tests.

Winkbed Soft Motion Transfer

WinkBed Soft - motion transfer chart

So the interesting this about the Winkbed Soft is that although it experienced higher levels of motion transfer initially, it actually absorbed the motion quicker than both other Winkbeds we tested. By 0.65 seconds, the energy is pretty much gone.

Winkbed Luxury Firm Motion Transfer

WinkBed luxury firm mattress - motion transfer

On the Winkbed Luxury Firm, the energy spiked around 2.5 m/s² and continued to travel across the mattress beyond 1 second.

Winkbed Plus Motion Transfer

WinkBed Plus motion transfer chart

On the Winkbed Plus, motion transfer levels were higher like the Winkbed Soft, spiking around 4.5 m/s² and continuing beyond 0.7 seconds.

Response Test

The response time on the Winkbed is pretty consistently fast across all mattresses.

Response TestScoreMostly RecoveredCompletely Recovered
Winkbed Soft100.3 seconds0.5 seconds
Winkbed Lux Firm100.2 seconds0.3 seconds
Winkbed Plus100.3 seconds0.4 seconds

The average response time across all mattresses that we’ve tested to date is 0.56 seconds to be mostly recovered and 0.94 seconds to be fully recovered.

As you can see, the response time of Winkbed is much faster than that, nearly twice as fast.

The response times of each mattress are shown in the video clips below.

Winkbed Soft Response Test

Bounce Test

The level of bounce on the Winkbed Soft and Winkbed Luxury Firm is slightly more bounce than average. The Winkbed Plus has less bounce than average.

Bounce TestBounce HeightBounce Range
Winkbed SoftModerate9.68″
Winkbed Lux FirmModerate9.91″
Winkbed PlusLow6.75″

The average amount of bounce across all mattresses tested to date is 9.35″.

The plush cover on the Winkbed Plush deadens a lot of the bounce you otherwise feel on the original Winkbed (Soft, Luxury Firm, and likely the Firm mattress as well).

Bounce levels can also be viewed in real-time via the short video clips below.

Edge Support Test

Moving right along, let’s talk about edge support. The edge support on the Winkbed Luxury Hybrid and the Winkbed Plus is exceptional.

Edge Support TestScoreMax SinkageLying Support
Winkbed Soft9.34.50″Excellent
Winkbed Lux Firm102.25″Exceptional
Winkbed Plus102.50″Exceptional

On the Soft, it’s a bit more sinkage than I like to see, but still slightly less than the average (across all mattresses that we’ve tested to date).

The average level of sinkage (when sitting right at the edge of the mattress) is 4.67″.

Soft

WinkBed Soft - edge support - body weight

Luxury Firm

WinkBed Edge Support - body weight only

Plus

WinkBed Plus - edge support (body weight only)

As you can see in the photos above, the Soft Winkbed just doesn’t have the support that it needs to really maintain the structure at the edges.

Although we don’t have a testing photo, I would expect the Winkbed Firm to have as good or better edge support as the Luxury Firm Winkbed.

The Winkbed Luxury Firm & Winkbed Plus have objectively the best edge support of any mattresses we’ve tested to date.

Sex Test

Here’s a look at our sex formula:

Sex Score Formula = (Bounce * 0.5) + (Edge Support * 0.2) + (Noise * 0.2) + (Sinkage * 0.05) + (Cooling * 0.05)

We use the following scores, plugged into the formula, to derive a sex score for each mattress.

The table below shows the individual scores as well as the combined total sex score.

Sex TestSex ScoreBounceEdge SupportNoisePressure ReliefCooling
Winkbed Soft9.89.99.3101010
Winkbed Lux Firm9.910109.01010
Winkbed Plus9.49.2109.01010

Among these mattresses, the Winkbed Luxury Firm had the best performance with Winkbid Soft close behind. Both of these mattresses have high levels of bounce, good edge support, as well as excellent pressure relief and cooling.

The Winkbed Plus has a lower level of bounce, which does hurt the score a bit, but that’s the only category that trailed behind. A score of 9.4 on the Winkbed Plus mattress means it’s good for sex, just not amazing.

Pressure Relief Test

Pressure relief is exceptional on the Winkbed mattresses. Each mattress has a 5.0″ comfort layer, excluding for the Winkbed Plus, which has a 5.5″ layer. The support layer on all mattresses tested here was 9.0″.

Pressure Relief TestScoreComfort LayerSupport Layer
Winkbed Soft105.0″9.0″
Winkbed Lux Firm105.0″9.0″
Winkbed Plus105.5″9.0″
Winkbed FirmN/A5.0″9.0″

Generally speaking, good pressure relief is made possible by a high-quality mattress that has a proper balance of comfort material and support material. This is exactly what we see with Winkbed.

Comfort material is sufficiently thick to allow the body to sink into the mattress providing contour and comfort, but paired with a support layer as well that keeps the spine in alignment.

Off-Gassing Test

Off-gassing on the Winkbed mattress is all pretty good. Each of the mattresses that we tested was fully off-gassed within 2 days of opening the box.

Off-Gassing TestScoreInitial SmellOff-Gassing Period
Winkbed Soft9.8Minimal2 days
Winkbed10None0 days
Winkbed Plus9.9Moderate1 day

The average period of time it takes to off-gas (based on all of our mattress tests to date) is usually 2.87 days, so this is a bit faster than the average.

The Winkbed Luxury Firm has the best performance as it had no smell at all right out of the box.

The Winkbed Soft has a minimal smell that dissipated within 2 days and the Winkbed Plus has a slightly stronger moderate smell. Even though the Winkbed Plus had a stronger smell out of the box, it actually off-gassed faster than the Winkbed Soft (fully off-gassing in only one day).

Company

Winkbed as a company has pretty favorable terms and conditions. Each of the Winkbed mattresses lists a 120-night trial period with a lifetime warranty and free shipping.

Design

The design of all of these Winkbed mattresses is pretty consistent. They are all hybrids that use a blend of poly foam, support foam, and pocketed coils.

One note, the Winkbed Plus is the only Winkbed mattress featured here that uses latex foam. Latex foam has a fast response time and additional cooling properties, as well as a slightly different feel.

Which Winkbed Should You Buy?

As you can see in the tests and analysis above, even though the quilted cover is the biggest difference between these two mattresses, this factor alone has a decent impact on performance, across the board.

Should You Buy the Winkbed Soft?

I would recommend the Winkbed Soft if you’re looking for:

  • Deeper sinkage. This mattress has the most sinkage out of all of the Winkbed mattresses featured in this comparison.
  • 4 out of 10. The Winkbed Soft has a feel of 4 out of 10 on the firmness scale. If you’re a lightweight sleeper or a side sleeper, you may benefit from the softer feel.

Should You Buy the Winkbed Luxury Firm?

I would recommend the Winkbed Luxury Firm if you’re looking for:

  • Well-rounded. The Luxury Firm is the most well-rounded Winkbed mattress in this comparison with excellent performance across the board.
  • 6 out of 10. This mattress has a firmer feel than the Soft, but not as firm as the Firm or Plus Winkbed. If you’re looking for a medium & balanced feel, or if you’re just not sure what firmness you need, then the Luxury Firm Winkbed is the right choice.

Should You Buy the Winkbed Firm?

I would recommend the Winkbed Firm if you’re looking for:

  • Less sinkage. The Winkbed Firm is presumed to have excellent edge support and the least amount of sinkage among all Winkbeds tested in this review.
  • 7 out of 10. This mattress is slightly firmer than the Winkbed Luxury Firm (and quite a bit firmer than the Soft version). If you’re a heavier sleeper, a back or stomach sleeper, or just prefer a firmer feel, the Winkbed Firm could be right for you.

Should You Buy the Winkbed Plus

I would recommend the Winkbed Plus if you’re looking for:

  • Support for plus-sized sleepers. The Winkbed plus is designed with heavier sleepers in mind. It has a thicker comfort layer and a firmer feel for adequate support.
  • 7 out of 10. The Plus is firmer than the Luxury Firm as well as the Soft, which is a good option for larger sleepers, especially over 300 pounds.
