For our Best Memory Foam Mattress list, we based our selections on the best-scoring mattresses, according to our battery of testing and formula-driven scoring.
Our tests analyze performance across 8 critical factors, including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company. In addition, we also test sinkage and bounce (though these are not scoring factors).
Our tests include objective and quantifiable data whenever possible. In addition, we use subjective assessment supported by data to round out our testing process.
Our scores are based on mathematical formulas and equations that utilize inputs from our data-driven testing.

The Amerisleep AS3 mattress is a 12.00″ memory foam mattress made of memory foam and support foam. It has a traditional memory foam feel, but prides itself on the cooling technology of its plant-based memory foam (as heat retention is a common problem with memory foam mattresses).
The Amerisleep AS3 is available in a single firmness level — medium. This is a 5 out of 10 in our firmness test, where 10 is the most firm.
This mattress has moderate sinkage and low levels of bounce. It has a dramatic contour and really hugs the body in all sleeping positions. Dramatic hug is one of the iconic calling cards of traditional memory foam, and the AS3 does a great job of being true to the feel.
In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.99, ranking the mattress in the top 23% of all mattresses tested to date. When looking exclusively at memory foam mattresses, the AS3 ranks in the top 2%.

The Amerisleep AS5 technically has higher overall performance (9.10 overall score) than the AS3, but with one important distinction. The AS5 is a softer mattress. In our firmness tests, the AS5 was a 4 out of 10, where 10 is the firmest. For lightweight sleepers or exclusive side sleepers who like a softer feel, the AS5 could be a fantastic option. That said, if you’re unsure which firmness is right for you, I would recommend sticking with the AS3, as it is considered more supportive for a wider range of sleeper types.

The Puffy Cloud is a 10″ memory foam mattress made of gel memory foam, transitional poly foam, and a support foam base. On top, they use a thin, breathable mesh cover that goes a long way to improve cooling.
The Puffy Cloud is available in a single firmness level — medium, which is a 5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm.
This mattress has deep sinkage and moderate levels of bounce, which creates a dramatic contour around the body while still being moderately easy to move around on.
Unlike other Puffy models that have thicker quilted covers, this thin cover keeps costs low and allows for the memory foam to form a more exacting hug, especially for deeper parts of the body. Furthermore, the 3-layer, all-foam design is a proven economic build that balances cost and performance.
In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.87, ranking the mattress in the top 28% of all memory foam (all-foam) mattresses tested to date.

The Novosbed is a memory foam mattress with a little less comfort material compared to some models on this list, but also with fantastic performance nevertheless. With 4″ of memory foam (in 3 distinct layers), it manages to breathe well and has a relatively fast material response.
The mattress offers a high degree of contour and hug, albeit with only minimal sinkage. It also has a fairly low level of bounce.
One of the best features of a memory foam mattress in this price range is its availability in multiple firmnesses. The Novosbed comes in three firmness options —Soft (4), Medium-Firm (6), or Firm (8).
The Novosbed scored an 8.87 in our performance tests, which puts it within the top 29% compared to all mattress types we’ve tested to date.
While its performance may be a bit lacking in a few distinct areas, its price is hard to beat. The Nectar Ultra is an ultra-thick memory foam mattress made up of a 15″ combination of memory foam, poly foam, and support foam. It is a powerhouse for cooling and pressure relief performance.
It has extremely deep sinkage and very low levels of bounce, which give it a feeling of being cradled or enveloped by the memory foam. With a polarizing feel, it can also be quite challenging to move around, more so than any other mattress on this list.
The Nectar Ultra is only available in a medium firmness level, which is a 5 out of 10 rating on the firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm.
With a total score of 8.81, the Nectar Ultras has a couple of week spots, most notably on response time and sex. That being said, it’s still good enough to be within the top 19% of memory foam mattresses we’ve tested.
