Does The Tempurpedic Mattress Contain Fiberglass?

According to brand representatives, Tempurpedic mattresses do not contain fiberglass in the foam or the covers. That being said, their answer leaves quite a bit of gray area which can lead to more questions than answers.

Here is what Tempurpedic said when we asked them outright if their mattresses contained fiberglass.

While their answer initially sounds good, the follow-up statement about the brand using “core-spun glass fiber technology” sounds a lot like regular fiberglass.

So from this statement, we can gather that Tempurpedic does contain fiberglass, but not in any foams or covers. Instead, the fiberglass is used within the fire retardant or other sub-layers.

This assumption is backed up even further by a law tag from an older-model Tempurpedic that states the mattress contains 37% glass fiber within the mattress’s netting.

But what about being CertiPur-US certified?

CertiPur certification is certainly a good mark for many mattresses, but considering this certification does not test for the preference of fiberglass, the honor feels a little misplaced.

CertiPur-US certified mattresses are:

  • Made without ozone depleters
  • Made without PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEP (“Tris”) flame retardants
  • Made without mercury, lead, and other heavy metals
  • Made without formaldehyde
  • Made without phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission
  • Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million

This list, although exhaustive and impressive for high-quality materials, makes no mention of the use of fiberglass.

Natural Fire Barriers

All mattress manufacturers are legally required to use a fire retardant. However, some brands use a natural fire barrier like wool or hydrated silica, which poses fewer health risks.

Check out this list to see which mattresses use natural fire barriers and which ones contain fiberglass.
