Each best list is put through a customized performance analysis with specialized consideration given to our objective & data-driven performance tests. In addition, we consider mattress type, design, materials, value, price, and more.

Performance Testing Factors

For our Best Innerspring Mattress list, we based our selections on the best-scoring mattresses, according to our battery of testing and formulaic-driven scoring.

Our tests analyze performance across 8 critical factors, including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company. In addition, we also test sinkage and bounce (though these are not scoring factors).

Our tests include objective and quantifiable data whenever possible. In addition, we use subjective assessment supported by data to round out our testing process.

Our scores are based on mathematical formulas and equations that utilize inputs from our data-driven testing.

You can see our complete testing and scoring process here.

In choosing the best innerspring mattresses, we looked at the totality of all of our tests, scores, data, and reviews to date. We analyzed this data alongside our established best mattress framework here.

When selecting the best innerspring mattress, we’re looking at a combination of overall scoring performance, firmness, design (must include tall unit of support coils), and US availability.

To be included within this list all mattresses:

  • Must have layer of support coils at least 6″ tall.
  • Have a firmness of 6 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm.
  • Had to have a performance score of 8.95 or higher.
  • Had to be available for purchase within the USA.
  • Excludes memory foam hybrids or latex hybrids, as these offer more polarizing feels that do not mimic the more classic, balanced feel of a traditional innerspring mattress.

Best For

  • Exceptional cooling performance, optional cooling cover
  • Deep-contouring pillow top, while maintaining support
  • Sleepers of all body types and sleeper weights (up to 300 lbs.)

Considerations

  • Returns are free, but exchanges cost $49
  • Thicker profile may not be great for a low-profile aesthetic
  • Very deep sinkage may not be ideal for all sleepers’ preferences

Our Verdict

The WinkBed is a 13.50″ hybrid mattress that has a plush, euro cover, poly foam comfort material, and a pocketed coil base.

The WinkBed uses a 3-zoned support coil system, although the exact coil count is not disclosed by the manufacturer.

The WinkBed is available in three different firmnesses—Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer. We have tested all three firmness levels and found the following: the WinkBed Softer had a soft feel (4 out of 10), the WinkBed Luxury Firm had a medium-firm feel (6 out of 10), and the WinkBed Firmer had a firm feel (8 out of 10). There is also the WinkBed Plus, which has a medium-firm (6) feel, ideal for heavier-weighted sleepers over 250 lbs.

In our tests, the WinkBed Luxury Firm had a balanced feel with deep sinkage and moderate bounce.

WinkBed has an exceptional performance score of 9.55 overall, ranking as the best mattress we’ve tested to date, across all mattress types.

The WinkBed in queen size costs $1,799, which is 19% more expensive than the average hybrid mattress we’ve tested. If you want fantastic performance at a price that is still sub-2K, the WinkBed is a truly incredible value mattress.

  • Exceptional cooling performance with low levels of heat retention
  • Deep sinkage while retaining a responsive feel
  • Exceptional pressure relief and edge support

Considerations

  • Higher levels of motion transfer than the average mattress
  • Higher price—27% higher than the average hybrid
  • Higher bounce leads to higher levels of motion transfer

Our Verdict

The Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance LX mattress is a 14.00″ hybrid mattress made of latex foam, memory foam, poly foam, a pocketed coil core, and a support foam base. This mattress is topped by a 2.25″ pillow top cover.

The ThermoBalance LX uses zoned coils divided into three sections, similar to the WinkBed. A queen-sized LX mattress includes up to 1,032 individually encased coils.

The Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance LX is available in three firmness levels — Soft, Medium, and Firm. We tested the medium version and found it to have a medium-firm feel—6 out of 10 on our firmness scale.

This mattress has deep sinkage and high levels of bounce. Especially if you like the feel of a traditional coil mattress, the high levels of bounce will likely be an attractive feature on the ThermoBalance LX.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 9.50, ranking the mattress in the top 1% of all mattresses tested to date.

The Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance LX costs $1,899 for a queen-sized mattress, 27% more expensive than the average hybrid mattress we’ve tested. Although the price is higher, it’s one of those cases where you get what you pay for: a higher-quality, high-performance mattress.

Best For

  • Exceptional pressure relief with pillow top cover
  • Fantastic edge support for sitting or lying
  • Low levels of motion transfer, 34% less than what we measured on the average mattress

Considerations

  • Lower sex score, largely due to the low levels of bounce
  • Response time is good but not as good as what you would likely see on a traditional innerspring mattress
  • Off-gassing duration of 7 days

Our Verdict

The Helix Midnight Luxe is a 14.00″ hybrid mattress made of memory foam, poly foam, pocketed coils, and a foam base. It has a 1.25″ pillow top cover made of Tencel, with a soft, breathable feel. You can upgrade to the GlacioTex cooling cover for an additional $199, which offers better cooling performance and less heat retention.

The Midnight Luxe also has a 3-zoned pocketed coil system where each coil is encased in a thin fabric. A queen-size mattress includes over 1,000 individually wrapped coils, with reinforced coils at the edge of the mattress for better support

The Helix Midnight Luxe is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm with a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm. Helix offers a wide range of other firmnesses within the Luxe collection. You can see a full list here.

This mattress has moderate sinkage and low levels of bounce. If you want coil support but less bounce, the Helix Midnight Luxe could be a great alternative to some of the bouncier mattresses on this guide.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 9.49, ranking the mattress in the top 1% of all mattresses tested to date.

The Helix Midnight Luxe is $1,899 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 31% more expensive than average we’ve tested. Like the other mattresses we’ve included thus far, the Midnight Luxe is not a traditional innerspring mattress, but the coil base gives it fantastic support and a score that tops our NapLab charts.

Best For

  • More traditional coil construction and feel
  • Moderate sinkage with fast response time
  • Ships uncompressed, includes in-home delivery, setup, & old mattress removal

Considerations

  • More motion transfer than the average mattress
  • $99 fee for returns if things don’t work out
  • Costs significantly more than the average coil mattress (but also has incredible performance)

Our Verdict

The Saatva Classic has a thickness of 11.5″ or 14.5″, depending on personal preference, and a coil-on-coil construction. If you are looking for a more traditional and classic innerspring mattress, the Saatva Classic is going to be the closest match among anything on this list.

It is the only mattress with a dual-coil design, featuring thicker support coils (13 gauge) toward the bottom and thinner, more responsive comfort coils (14.5 gauge) in the upper portion. The support coils are interconnected like a traditional innerspring mattress, while the upper coils are individually pocketed, like what we see on hybrid mattresses.

The Saatva is available in three firmness levels—Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, or Firm. We have tested all three versions of this mattress. The Plush Soft had a soft feel (4 out of 10), the Luxury Firm had a medium-firm feel (6 out of 10), and the Firm version had a firm feel (8 out of 10).

The Saatva Classic has a traditional coil design with moderate sinkage and very high bounce. This type of feel is going to be more typical of a classic innerspring mattress.

This mattress has a fantastic performance score of 9.47 overall, which ranks it as the #1 coil mattress, as well as within the top 1% among all mattress types we’ve tested to date.

A queen Saatva Classic costs $1,853. This is nearly 2X the average coil mattress price we’ve tested (98% more expensive). But compared with other high-end mattresses on this list, the Saatva Classic’s price is comparable.

I would recommend this mattress for sleepers who enjoy a more traditional coil-based feel. It’s also a good choice if you want white-glove delivery. Saatva includes delivery, unboxing, setup, and removal of your old mattress (all included for free).

Best For

  • Exceptional cooling performance
  • Fantastic pressure relief, 4.75″ comfort layer thickness
  • Excellent pressure relief for all sleeping positions

Considerations

  • Extremely deep sinkage may not suit all sleepers’ preferences
  • Lower levels of bounce, especially when compared to a traditional innerspring mattress
  • 13.5″ thick, high profile

Our Verdict

The Leesa Sapira Chill mattress is a 13.50″ hybrid mattress with a poly foam comfort layer, pocketed coil support, and a support foam base.

Like the other hybrids in this review, the Leesa Sapira Chill has a three-zone support coil system with coil gauge ranging from 13.5 to 14.75. It also features reinforced coils around the mattress perimeter for better edge support. Leesa does not fully disclose the exact coil count.

The Leesa Sapira Chill is available in three firmness levels — Plush, Medium-Firm, and Firm. We have tested the medium-firm version and found it to have a medium-firm feel, a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale.

This mattress has extremely deep sinkage, low levels of bounce, and a balanced level of body contour. While the cooling of this mattress is on par with a coil mattress, it will have significantly less bounce and a slower response time than typical innerspring mattresses.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 9.34, ranking the mattress in the top 4% of all mattresses tested to date.

The Leesa Sapira Chill is $1,679 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 8% more than the average hybrid mattress we’ve tested. Leesa’s near-average price, paired with its significantly higher overall score, makes it a standout value. That said, it lacks the high bounce of a traditional innerspring mattress, which some sleepers may find less appealing.

Best For

  • Exceptional edge support and pressure relief
  • Three firmness options
  • Celliant-infused cooling cover, great cooling performance

Considerations

  • Higher levels of motion transfer, 12% more than average
  • Slower than average material recovery speed
  • Priced 22% more expensive than the average hybrid

Our Verdict

The Bear Elite Ultra Hybrid mattress is a 14.00″ hybrid mattress made of memory foam, microcoils, poly foam, pocketed coils, and a support foam base.

This mattress has a five-zone pocketed coil support base and microcoils in the comfort layer. While it’s not a traditional dual coil design like the Saatva Classic, it does have more coils than other mattresses in this comparison.

The Bear Elite Ultra Hybrid is available in three firmness levels — Soft, Medium, and Firm. In our tests, the Medium version actually had a medium-firm feel (6 out of 10 on our firmness scale).

The Medium version of this mattress also has deep sinkage and moderate levels of bounce. For side sleepers, this deeper sinkage is excellent for pressure relief and hug. This helps to maintain proper spinal alignment and back support.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 9.32, ranking the mattress in the top 3% of all mattresses tested to date.

The Bear Elite Ultra Hybrid is $1,856 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 22% more expensive than the average hybrid we’ve tested. If you want coils in both the comfort and support layers, the Bear Elite Ultra Hybrid is an attractive option.

Best For

  • Fantastic cooling performance
  • Exceptional pressure relief with 7.0″ comfort layer thickness
  • Deep levels of sinkage can provide nice contour and engagement, especially for side sleepers

Considerations

  • Below-average sex score, largely due to low levels of bounce
  • Slower-than-average material response time
  • Low levels of bounce might not be great for sleepers who want a springier feel

Our Verdict

The GhostBed Luxe Hybrid mattress is a 14.00″ hybrid mattress made of poly foam, pocketed coils, and a support foam base.

This mattress uses a 6.0″ coil base with individually wrapped pocketed coils. This is slightly thinner than the coils used in other mattresses featured in this comparison and could be a disadvantage if you’re looking for a more traditional coil feel. It’s unclear whether these coils are zoned, but GhostBed confirms zoning in the foam layers above the coils (ProCore Elite zoned foam).

The GhostBed Luxe Hybrid is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm. In our test, this is a 6 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm.

This mattress has deep sinkage and low levels of bounce. Again, this will be quite different than the bouncy feel of a traditional innerspring mattress. That said, the pressure relief, cooling, and overall support on the GhostBed is fantastic.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 9.15, ranking the mattress in the top 14% of all mattresses tested to date.

The GhostBed Luxe Hybrid is $1,699 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 9% more expensive than the average hybrid. Despite its slightly higher price, the GhostBed Luxe Hybrid’s overall performance still makes it a solid value.

Considerations

  • Below-average sex performance, not great for couples
  • Low bounce is dissimilar to traditional innerspring mattresses
  • 7-day off-gassing duration

Our Verdict

The Dreamcloud Premier Hybrid mattress is a 13.50″ hybrid mattress made of memory foam, poly foam, and a pocketed coil + support foam base.

This mattress has an 8-inch, zoned pocketed coil base. There is 4.5″ of comfort foam above this coil layer, giving it a different feel than traditional innerspring, but still fantastic performance.

The Dreamcloud Premier Hybrid is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm. On our firmness scale, this is a 6 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm.

This mattress has moderate sinkage and low levels of bounce. The upper memory foam layers give this mattress a dramatic contour and a high degree of hug.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 9.08, ranking the mattress in the top 20% of all mattresses tested to date.

The Dreamcloud Premier Hybrid is $1,099 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 30% less expensive than the average hybrid. If you want a high-performing mattress with a coil base and don’t necessarily want high bounce, the Dreamcloud Premier Hybrid is a real winner.

This mattress has an 8-inch coil layer of individually pocketed steel coils with a 4.0″ comfort layer above. The coils themselves are not zoned, but there is an additional foam layer in the lumbar position and a quilted cover with reinforced stitching for extra support in the midsection.

The Glacier Original is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm. On our firmness scale this is a 6 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm.

This mattress has moderate sinkage and low levels of bounce. It has a balanced level of body contour, making it a good option for sleepers with a wide range of preferences.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.95, ranking the mattress in the top 26% of all mattresses tested to date. While it doesn’t have the highest score among all mattresses we’ve tested in this comparison, it does have one big advantage—price.

The Glacier Original is $899 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 42% less expensive than the average hybrid mattress. If you’re looking for a high-quality mattress on a budget, the Glacier Original is a great option to consider.
