Each best list is put through a customized performance analysis with specialized consideration given to our objective & data-driven performance tests. In addition, we consider mattress type, design, materials, value, price, and more.

Performance Testing Factors

For our Best Pillow Top Mattress list, we based our selections on the best-scoring mattresses, according to our battery of testing and formulaic-driven scoring.

Our tests analyze performance across 8 critical factors, including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company. In addition, we also test sinkage and bounce (though these are not scoring factors).

Our tests include objective and quantifiable data whenever possible. In addition, we use subjective assessment supported by data to round out our testing process.

Our scores are based on mathematical formulas and equations that utilize inputs from our data-driven testing.

You can see our complete testing and scoring process here.

In choosing the best pillow top mattresses, we looked at the totality of all of our tests, scores, data, and reviews to date. We analyzed this data alongside our established best mattress framework here.

When selecting the best pillow top mattress, we’re looking at a combination of overall scoring performance, firmness, design (had to have a pillow top), and US availability.

To be included within this list, all mattresses:

  • Had to have a pillow top cover
  • Had to have a firmness of 6 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm.
  • Had to have a performance score of 8.79 or higher
  • Had to be availabile for purchase within the USA
  • Latex and latex hybrid mattresses were limited to the top 2 picks by score. Latex has a polarizing feel that some love and some hate. It’s a far more polarizing feel than poly foam or memory foam. See our best latex mattresses list for more.

Best For

  • Exceptional cooling performance, optional cooling cover
  • Deep-contouring pillow top, while maintaining support
  • Sleepers of all body types and sleeper weights (up to 300 lbs.)

Considerations

  • Returns are free, but exchanges cost $49
  • Thicker profile may not be great for a low-profile aesthetic
  • Very deep sinkage may not be ideal for all sleepers’ preferences

Our Verdict

The WinkBed is a 13.50″ hybrid mattress that has a plush, Euro cover, poly foam comfort material, and a pocketed coil base. This mattress has a 2.00″ pillow top cover. You can choose the standard cover or the frost cooling cover for better cooling performance (additional $125).

The WinkBed is available in three different firmnesses—Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer. We have tested all three firmness levels and found the following: the WinkBed Softer had a soft feel (4 out of 10), the WinkBed Luxury Firm had a medium-firm feel (6 out of 10), and the WinkBed Firmer had a firm feel (8 out of 10). There is also the Winkbed Plus, which has a medium-firm (6) feel, ideal for heavier-weighted sleepers over 250 lbs.

In our tests, the WinkBed Luxury Firm had very deep sinkage and low levels of bounce. The body contour is balanced on this mattress and is a good option for sleepers who want to sleep “in” the mattress.

WinkBed has an exceptional overall performance score of 9.55, making it the top-rated mattress that we’ve tested to date.

The WinkBed in queen size is $1,799, which is 19% more expensive than the average hybrid mattress, but about $100 less than the ThermoBalance LX. If you want fantastic performance for under $2K, the WinkBed is a phenomenal value.

The Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance LX mattress is a 14.00″ hybrid mattress made of a combination of different foam types, followed by a pocketed coil and support foam base. It has a 2.25″ pillow-top cover, giving the mattress a comfortable pressure releiving feel.

The Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance LX is available in three firmness levels — Soft, Medium, and Firm. We tested the Medium version and found it to have a medium-firm feel—6 out of 10 on our firmness scale.

This mattress has deep sinkage and high levels of bounce. It has a balanced level of contour and hug, making it a good match for a wide range of sleeper preferences.

Best For

  • Incredible cooling performance with optional cooling pillow top
  • Thick, quality memory foam creates fantastic pressure relief
  • Edge support is extremely robust

Considerations

  • Classic memory foam feel also creates low bounce and slow response
  • Lackluster sex performance
  • Price tag is higher than average by 31%

Our Verdict

The Helix Midnight Luxe mattress is a 14.00″ hybrid mattress comprised of memory foam, poly foam, pocketed coils, support foam, and a thick, foam-infused quilted cover. This mattress has a 2.00″ pillow top cover that is made of poly foam, memory foam, and cooling fibers woven into the fabric. Notably, the pillow top is an optional upgrade called GlacioTex cooling cover, which costs an extra $199. While it is more expensive, it dramatically improves cooling and comfort (we tested the Glaciotex pillow top in our review).

The Helix Midnight Luxe is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm with a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm. Helix offers a wide range of other firmnesses within the Luxe collection. You can see a full list here.

This mattress has moderate sinkage and low levels of bounce. It has a bit less sinkage while still providing balanced body contouring. For deeper sinkage, you could also consider the Helix Midnight Elite, but the price is notably higher.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 9.49, ranking the mattress in the top 1% of all mattresses tested to date.

The Helix Midnight Luxe is $1,899 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 31% more expensive than average. Given the higher performance, the Midnight Luxe is a great option to consider if you are looking for less sinkage on a pillow top mattress.

Best For

  • Plush euro-style pillow top cover & great cooling performance
  • Moderate sinkage with fast response time
  • Ships uncompressed, includes in-home delivery, setup, & old mattress removal

Considerations

  • More motion transfer than the average mattress
  • $99 fee for returns
  • Costs significantly more than the average coil mattress (but also has better performance)

Our Verdict

The Saatva Classic has a thickness of 11.5″ or 14.5″, depending on personal preference (price is the same for both thicknesses), and a coil-on-coil construction. It has a 2.00″ pillow top cover made of organic cotton and hand-tufted details.

The Saatva is available in three firmness levels—Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, or Firm. We have tested all three versions of this mattress. The Plush Soft had a soft feel (4 out of 10), the Luxury Firm had a medium-firm feel (6 out of 10), and the Firm version had a firm feel (8 out of 10).

This mattress has a fantastic performance score of 9.47 overall, which ranks it as the #1 coil mattress, as well as within the top 1% among all mattress types we’ve tested to date.

A Queen Saatva Classic costs $1,853. This is nearly 2X the average coil mattress price we’ve tested, but compared with other pillow top mattresses at a similar performance level, the price is similar.

I recommend the Saatva Classic for sleepers who prefer a more traditional coil-based feel. It’s also a good choice for those who want full-service delivery and mattress removal (of your old mattress) included for free.

  • Excellent pressure relief for all sleeping positions

Considerations

  • Extremely deep sinkage may not suit all sleepers
  • Off-gassing duration of 7 days

Our Verdict

The Leesa Sapira Chill mattress is a 13.50″ hybrid mattress with a poly foam comfort layer, pocketed coil support, and a support foam base. It has a 1.25″ pillow-top layer with a diamond stitching pattern. The Sapira Chill cover is cool to the touch and gives the mattress a luxury feel.

The Leesa Sapira Chill is available in three firmness levels — Plush, Medium-Firm, and Firm. We have tested the medium-firm version and found it to have a medium-firm feel, a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale.

This mattress has extremely deep sinkage and low levels of bounce. Body contour is balanced on this mattress, despite the extremely deep levels of sinkage. You really want to enjoy sleeping “in” the mattress for the Sapira Chill to be a good match.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 9.34, ranking the mattress in the top 4% of all mattresses tested to date.

The Leesa Sapira Chill costs $1,679 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 8% more expensive than the average hybrid mattress. With its significantly higher overall score, the Sapira Chill offers strong value for sleepers who want a pillow top feel without sacrificing cooling performance.

  • Celliant-infused cooling cover, great cooling performance

Considerations

  • Higher levels of motion transfer, 12% more than average
  • Worse than average material recovery speed
  • Priced 22% more expensive than the average hybrid

Our Verdict

The Bear Elite Ultra Hybrid is a 14.00″ hybrid mattress made of memory foam, microcils, poly foam, pocketed coils, and a support foam base. In the version that we originally tested of this mattress, the pillow top was 1.25″ thick.

But this mattress was recently redesigned in September 2026, and now the pillow top cover is only 1.00″ thick. This is the thinnest pillow top of any mattress featured in this guide. If you are specifically looking for an ultra-thick pillow-top cover, the Bear Elite Ultra Hybrid may not be the best option for you.

The Bear Elite Ultra Hybrid is available in three firmness levels — Soft, Medium, and Firm. In our tests, the Medium version had a medium-firm feel, 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale where 10 is the most firm.

The Medium version of this mattress also has deep sinkage and moderate levels of bounce. It has a balanced level of contour, making it an attractive option for many sleepers.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 9.32, ranking the mattress in the top 3% of all mattresses tested to date.

The Bear Elite Ultra Hybrid is $1,856 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 22% more expensive than the average hybrid. Given its high performance, the Bear Elite Ultra is a great option, as long as you are okay with the thinner pillow top.

  • Best memory foam hybrid we’ve tested to date
  • Outstanding pressure relief and edge support performance

Considerations

  • Limited bounce hurts sex performance
  • Memory foam creates slower material response time
  • Thick 14″ profile could be too thick for some aesthetics

Our Verdict

The Glacier Apex mattress is a 14.25″ memory foam hybrid mattress made up of a plush quilted cover, copper-infused memory foam, gel-infused memory foam, poly foam, and a pocketed coil unit.

It has a 1.25″ pillow top cover that is woven with cooling fibers cooling cover, prioritizing limited levels of heat retention. While this isn’t the thickest pillow top cover that we’ve seen, it still earns a 10 out of 10 for pressure relief.

The Glacier Apex is available in three firmness levels — Soft, Medium, or Firm. We tested the medium version and found it to have a medium-firm feel, 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm.

The Medium version of this mattress has moderate sinkage and low levels of bounce. It offers a high degree of contour and hug without overly enveloping your body in material.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 9.27, ranking the mattress in the top 6% of all mattresses tested to date. For memory foam hybrids, in particular, this is as good as it gets. It ranks #1 in that category.

The Glacier Apex is $1,599 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 17% less expensive than average. For such a top-tier mattress, especially for those looking for a memory foam feel, this mattress has incredible value.

  • Great for couples—low motion transfer, great sex performance
  • Excellent edge support

Considerations

  • Stronger smell duration than average (despite it being a more natural smell)
  • Extremely high bounce may not be ideal for all sleepers
  • Slower response time than average

Our Verdict

The Birch Luxe mattress is a 11.50″ latex hybrid mattress made of natural latex and pocketed coils. It has a 1.5″ pillow top cover made from layers of natural wool and topped with an organic cotton cover.

The Birch Luxe is available in a single firmness level, which has a medium-firm feel, 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm.

This mattress has deep sinkage and extremely high levels of bounce. It has a balanced level of body contour and a more generalized contour compared to what you’ll get from other foam or hybrid models.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 9.12, ranking the mattress in the top 16% of all mattresses tested to date.

The Birch Luxe is $1,968 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 1% less expensive than the average latex hybrid. The price is high, but for a natural mattress with a pillow top cover, the Birch Luxe is one of the best mattresses you could go with.
