Our Verdict
Between the Casper Original and Casper Original Hybrid, the hybrid takes the cake as far as performance goes. But there are no areas that are drastically different. The Original Hybrid is consistently just slightly better across the board.
Cooling, edge support, and pressure relief are 0.5 of a point better on the Hybrid, which adds up to a slightly higher overall score. Both mattresses have a very fast material response time and struggle with high levels of motion transfer.
For savings, opt for the Casper Original, but the Casper Original Hybrid is the #2 highest-performing Casper of all mattresses in their collection (only beat by the higher-priced Casper Snow Hybrid).
For better performance without spending more on the Snow, go for the Casper Original Hybrid ($500 less than the Casper Snow Hybrid).

- Edge Support
- Sex
- Pressure Relief
- Off-Gassing
- Company
Cooling Test
When comparing cooling between the Casper Original and Casper Original Hybrid, the Casper Original Hybrid had better performance, marked by limited heat retention and higher levels of breathability.
The coil support system on this mattress is a huge factor in enhanced cooling as well as hole-punched foam layers.
Cooling Test | Score | Baseline | Max Temp | Ending Temp |
---|---|---|---|---|
Casper Original | 9.0 | 64.2° | 85.2° | -11.9° |

Sinkage Test
Sinkage is minimal on both the Casper Original and the Casper Original Hybrid. For reference, the average sinkage depth across all mattresses tested to date is 2.18″.
Sinkage Test | Sinkage Depth | Max Sinkage |
---|---|---|
Casper Original | Very Minimal | 1.69″ |
Casper Original Hybrid | Minimal | 1.91″ |
Casper Original
Casper Original Hybrid
Both the Original and Original Hybrid fall well below this level. The Casper Original has over 1/4″ less sinkage than the Original Hybrid as well. For the absolute least level of sinkage, the Original all-foam is a solid pick.
Motion Transfer Test
Motion transfer is slightly better on the Casper Original Hybrid compared to the Casper Original, but to be honest it’s pretty consistently “less than great” across all Casper mattresses tested to date. The only exception to this rule is for The Casper (with a score of 9.0)
Motion Transfer Test | Score | Acc. Range |
---|---|---|
Casper Original | 8.4 | 11.30 m/s² |
Casper Original Hybrid | 8.5 | 10.87 m/s² |
Casper Original
Casper Original Hybrid
For reference, the average level of motion transfer across all mattresses tested to date is 8.34 m/s². All Caspers are a good bit beyond this average, but The Casper measured 8.91m/s². This is just slightly more than the average.
Response Test
The response was very fast on both the Casper Original and Casper Original Hybrid. If we’re getting technical, the Casper Original Hybrid was 0.3 seconds faster for complete recovery, but this feels like a relatively minor difference when we consider the mostly recovered times of 0.2 seconds.
Response Test | Score | Mostly Recovered | Completely Recovered |
---|---|---|---|
Casper Original | 10 | 0.2 seconds | 0.7 seconds |
Casper Original Hybrid | 10 | 0.2 seconds | 0.4 seconds |
Casper Original
Casper Original Hybrid
For comparison, the average response time is 0.4 seconds (mostly recovered) and 0.8 seconds (fully recovered). Both of these mattresses performed better than the average.
Bounce Test
Bounce levels are moderate on both of these Casper mattresses, but slightly higher on the Casper Original compared to the Original Hybrid.
Bounce Test | Bounce Height | Bounce Range |
---|---|---|
Casper Original | Moderate | 9.80″ |
Casper Original Hybrid | Moderate | 8.21″ |
These test results were a little surprising as hybrids tend to have more bounce than all-foam mattresses (especially when top layers are comparable).
For comparison, the average level of bounce across all mattresses tested to date is 9.62″.
Casper Original: Bounce Test
Casper Original Hybrid: Bounce Test
The Casper Original Hybrid has slightly less bounce than average and the Casper Original has slightly more bounce than average.
Bounce is more of a preferential factor than anything else, but certainly worth considering, depending on what you’re looking for.
Edge Support Test
While lying support is excellent on both of these Casper mattresses, sitting edge support is significantly better on the Casper Original Hybrid than the all-foam Casper.
Edge Support Test | Score | Max Sinkage | Lying Support |
---|---|---|---|
Casper Original | 9.6 | 3.75″ | Excellent |
Casper Original Hybrid | 10 | 2.25″ | Excellent |
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Casper Original
Casper Original Hybrid
For reference, the average level of sitting sinkage across all mattresses tested to date is 4.14″ Both the Casper Original and Original Hybrid had less sinkage than average and hence better edge support.
The level of edge support while lying is also documented below.
Casper Original
Casper Original Hybrid
As you can see, we noted a bit more sinkage when lying on the Casper Original, but not to a level that feels unsupportive in any way. Overall, I was impressed with both of these mattresses.
Sex Test
The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling. These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score.
Comparing the Casper Original and the Casper Original Hybrid, again, we’re seeing great performance on both mattresses.
Sex Test | Sex Score | Bounce | Edge Support | Noise | Pressure Relief | Cooling |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Casper Original | 9.8 | 10 | 9.6 | 10 | 9.0 | 9.0 |
Casper Original Hybrid | 9.7 | 9.6 | 10 | 10 | 9.5 | 9.5 |
The Casper Original has higher levels of bounce (which is a big help to the score), but also has slightly less supportive edges.
By comparison, the Casper Original Hybrid has better edges, pressure relief, and cooling, but also less bounce (which hurts the score slightly).
Because bounce is worth more of the overall sex score than the other factors, it is the factor that sways the overall sex score more significantly.
Pressure Relief Test
Pressure relief is slightly better on the Casper Original Hybrid than it is on the Casper Original. While both mattresses have the same thickness of comfort layer and support layer, it’s really the difference in material that is the game changer.
Pressure Relief Test | Score | Comfort Layer | Support Layer |
---|---|---|---|
Casper Original | 9.0 | 3.5″ | 7.0″ |
Casper Original Hybrid | 9.5 | 3.5″ | 7.0″ |
The pocketed coils used on the Casper Original Hybrid provided better pressure relief than the support foam used on the Casper Original.
Off-Gassing Test
Off-gassing was very strong and slow to disperse on both the Casper Original and the Casper Original Hybrid.
Off-Gassing Test | Score | Initial Smell | Off-Gassing Period |
---|---|---|---|
Casper Original | 8.8 | Strong | 15 days |
Casper Original Hybrid | 8.8 | Strong | 15 days |
Right out of the box, the odors on both mattresses were strong. Each mattress comes vacuum-sealed, rolled, and packed in a cardboard box.
When the packaging is cut, that odor begins to dissipate into the room as the mattress fully recovers back to it its original shape.
In our tests it took 15 days for the odor to fully dissipate on both of these Casper mattresses.
For comparison, the average off-gassing period is 4.7 days so Casper’s off-gassing period is significantly longer than average.
Company
The company score takes a look at factors that may influence your experience with the mattress.
Factors include length of the trial period, warranty, shipping / return costs, and country of origin.
Company | Casper |
---|---|
Trial Period | 100 nights |
Warranty | 10 years |
Shipping | $0 |
Returns | $0 |
Country of Origin | USA |
Casper has a decent company score, but not the best we’ve seen.
Both mattresses come with a 100-night trial period, as is standard on any Casper mattress. This is 65 nights shorter than the average trial period length (165 nights).
The 10-year warranty is also slightly less than average. Of all mattresses we’ve tested to date, 27% of them have lifetime warranties, and the other 73% have an average of 14-year warranties.
With Casper only offering a 10-year warranty, this is definitely shorter than average.
Firmness
Both the Casper Original and Casper Original Hybrid have a medium-firm feel with a firmness of 6 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm.
Firmness | Rating | Label | Read Review |
---|---|---|---|
Casper Original | 6 | Medium-Firm | Read Review |
Casper Original Hybrid | 6 | Medium-Firm | Read Review |
This firmness is generally suitable for a wide range of sleepers, being firm enough to support heavier sleepers while also being soft enough to provide pressure relief for lighter sleepers.
Support & Sleeping Positions
Support is good on both of these Casper mattresses and both would be suitable for all sleepers.
Sleeper Weight | Stomach Sleepers | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers |
---|---|---|---|
Under 150 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
150-250 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
250-300 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
If you’re particularly sensitive to pressure relief issues or for sleepers over 300 lbs, you would likely be better served by the Casper Original Hybrid or an alternate hybrid entirely with a thicker profile (ie: Casper Wave Hybrid with a 12″ thickness.)
Design
The Casper Original is an all-foam mattress and the Casper Original Hybrid is a hybrid—made up of a combination of foam and coils. Hybrids are more expensive on average, but also typically have higher performance and a longer mattress lifespan.
Design | Type | Thickness |
---|---|---|
Casper Original | Foam | 10.5″ |
Casper Original Hybrid | Hybrid | 10.5″ |

So which mattress is the right pick for you?
Should You Buy the Casper Original?
I would recommend the Casper Original to sleepers who are looking for:
- More Bounce: The Casper Original has slightly more bounce than the Casper Original Hybrid. If you’re looking for a more active feel (also better for sex), the Original all-foam could be the better option.
- Lower Price Tag: The Casper Original is $995 for a queen, while the Hybrid is $1,495 for the same size mattress. You do give up some performance for the all-foam original, but if you’re on a tight budget, it may be hard to overlook that $500 savings.

Should You Buy the Casper Original Hybrid?
I would recommend the Casper Original Hybrid to sleepers who are looking for:
- Better Cooling: If you’re sensitive to heat retention issues, the Hybrid could be a better option due to its improved cooling performance. The coils do a better job of promoting airflow and drawing heat away from the body.
- Better Edge Support: The Original Hybrid has better edge support and less sinkage when seated on the edge of the mattress.
- Better Pressure Relief: For pressure relief, the Original Hybrid is also a better pick over the all-foam, despite the fact that both mattresses have the same 10.5″ thickness.
