Our Verdict

Helix has a huge range of mattress types and firmnesses. They specialize in hybrids that use a blend of foams as well as pocketed coils.

These mattresses offer good cooling performance, low to moderate motion transfer, fast response time, moderate levels of bounce, good edge support, good for sex, good pressure relief, fast off-gassing, and a positive company score.

For the best possible pressure relief and support, opt for the Helix Luxe mattresses. There is a Luxe version of almost every Helix mattress. Luxe mattresses use better foams and a thicker comfort layer. Use the tables below to find what Helix may be right for you.

Type: Hybrid
Firmness: 3.5 to 8 (out of 10)

Helix Mattress Types

Although Helix has almost a dozen different mattresses by name, there are really three different stypes.

  1. Standard
  2. Luxe
  3. Plus

These are all hybrid mattresses, being that they are a blend of a combination of comfort foams and a support layer of pocketed coils.

Standard

3″ comfort foam

Helix Moonlight Material Layers

Luxe

5″ comfort foam

Helix Midnight Luxe material layers

Plus

4.25” comfort foam

Helix Plus material layers
  • Standard: This mattress style has the thinnest comfort layer of the three styles, but is still sufficiently thick to provide good pressure relief for most sleepers.
  • Luxe: The Luxe has the thickest comfort layer of all three styles. A “Luxe” is available in the same mattresses that are offered in standard. Example: Helix Moonlight or Moonlight Luxe, Helix Dawn or Helix Dawn Luxe, Helix Midnight or Helix Midnight Luxe. “Luxe” designates a higher-end version of the standard mattress.
  • Plus: The Helix Plus is a single mattress that Helix offers that is specifically designed for heavier sleepers over 250 lbs. It has a thicker comfort layer than what you’ll find on the standard mattresses and also offers better pressure relief and support.

Lightweight Sleepers

Between 100 – 150 lbs.

  • If you sleep on your side, I would recommend the Helix Moonlight or Helix Sunset.
  • If you sleep on your back or stomach, I would recommend the Helix Midnight or Helix Dusk.
  • If you sleep in a mix of different positions, you may want to consider the Luxe versions—Helix Midnight Luxe or Helix Dawn Luxe.

Moderate Weight Sleepers

Between 150 – 250 lbs.

  • If you sleep on your side, I would recommend the Helix Midnight Luxe or Helix Dawn Luxe.
  • If you sleep on your back or stomach, I would recommend the Helix Midnight or Helix Dawn.
  • If you sleep in a mix of different positions, you may want to consider the Luxes—Helix Midnight Luxe or Helix Dawn Luxe.

Heavyweight Sleepers

Over 250 lbs.

  • Regardless of sleeping position, for plus-sized sleepers, I would recommend the Helix Dawn Luxe, Helix Twilight Luxe, or Helix Plus.

Child Sleepers

Under 120 lbs.

If you’re shopping for a sleeper under 120 lbs. and they are also a child, the best option is the Helix Kids mattress.

This is a flippable hybrid mattress that has foam top & bottom layers with a pocketed coil central core. Each side has a slightly different firmness that is designed for specific ages.

Side One is designed for 3-7-year-olds and is slightly firmer (8 out of 10 firmness). Side Two is designed for 8-12-year-olds and is slightly softer (but still fairly firm at a 7 out of 10).

I would not recommend this mattress for adults, even if you do fall under the 120 lbs. weight cap.

If you want Natural or Latex

If you’re specifically looking for a Helix mattress that is more natural and / or uses organic latex, check out the Birch line.

This collection includes two mattresses, the original Birch and the Birch Luxe. Both mattresses are organic latex hybrids and have a different feel, firmness, and performance from the rest of the Helix lineup.

General scoring and performance aside, let’s move into the comparisons. The next series of comparisons provide head-to-head data of some of the most likely Helix matchups you may be looking for.

Helix Luxe vs. Regular

For every Helix mattress (excluding the kids and Plus), there is a Luxe version.

Helix Luxe mattress are made with a zoned coil system, better materials, and a thicker comfort layer. All Luxe mattresses are also 2″ taller at 14″, compared to the standard Helix versions.

Height14″12″

Foam QualityGreatGood
Support1,500 coils950 coils
Zoned SupportYesNo
Edge Support4 sides2 sides
Warranty15 years10 years

So who should upgrade to the Luxe versions? Let’s look at the specific differences and what they mean.

  • Tencel Cover – all Luxe versions come with a Tencel cover standard. Tencel fibers are made from eucalyptus. They have been proven to improve cooling, reduce bacterial growth, and feel cool to the touch. If you are naturally hot sleeper then the Luxe upgrade is worth it.
  • Pressure Relief – all Luxe versions have a quilted pillowtop cover, as opposed to the standard Helix mattresses, which merely have an ultra-thin knitted cover (no pillowtop). Pillowtops can improve pressure relief and give the mattress a more luxurious feel. If you want a mattress with better pressure relief, the Luxe versions are worth the extra cost.
  • Better Materials – all Luxe mattresses use higher performance foams and a higher performance support coil system. The Luxe coil system is 1,500 coils, whereas the standard system is just 950 coils. More coils don’t necessarily mean better performance, but given our objective testing data and subjective experience, it’s clear to me that the Luxe coil system is significantly higher performance.
  • Zoned Support Coils – all Luxe mattresses use a zoned coil support system. This means that the coils create more support where you need it and less where you don’t. This helps to improve support, but especially helps to create a neutral spinal alignment. If you struggle with lower back pain, shoulder pain, or neck pain, the zonal support system is well worth the extra cost for the Luxe version.
  • Edge Support – all Helix Luxe mattresses have 4-sided edge support. Standard Helix mattresses only have the reinforced edge support on the sides of the mattress (not the head and foot). This is a nice extra, but pretty minor for most people.
  • Taller Height – all Luxe versions are 14″ tall, as opposed to the 12″ height on the standard Helix mattress. This is more of an aesthetic choice. A 14″ mattress isn’t necessarily better or worse than 12″.

Helix Moonlight vs. Helix Sunset

DesignHelix MoonlightHelix Sunset
Firmness3.5 out of 104 out of 10
Comfort Layer Thickness3.0″3.0″
Total Thickness12.0″12.0″

The Helix Moonlight and Helix Sunset are two of the softer options from Helix. These mattresses would be a better pick for lightweight side sleepers or those who prefer a softer feel.

Helix Moonlight

Helix Moonlight Material Layers

Helix Sunset

Helix Sunset material layers

Both mattresses have 3.0 inches of comfort material, although the breakup is a little different. The Moonlight uses a transitional poly foam followed by a classic memory foam for a more modern feel while the Sunset starts off with a 2.0″ memory foam and then 1.0″ transitional poly foam.

Performance-wise, we noted the following conclusions.

  • Cooling: Performance is a bit better on the Helix Sunset, although both mattresses had good scores.
  • Motion transfer: Both mattresses had higher levels than I like to see, but the Helix Sunset was better. That top layer of memory foam is likely a contributing factor here.
  • Response time: The Moonlight and Sunset had very fast response times.
  • Edge support: Both mattresses also had great edge support.
  • Sex: Sex scores were good—these mattresses have higher bounce (thanks, coils), good cooling performance, good edge support, and minimal noise. However, the Helix Sunset does edge out the Moonlight when it comes to sex.
  • Pressure relief: The Moonlight and Sunset have the same high score of 9.5 for pressure relief… very good performance here.
  • Off-gassing: Off-gassing was a minor issue for both of these mattresses, but the Moonlight did score slightly higher in this category.
  • Company: Since both of these mattresses are made by Helix, the company score is the same.

A few other differences to note include the differences in:

Sinkage: The Helix Moonlight had a max sinkage of 2.36″ and the Helix Sunset has a max sinkage of 3.07″. Because of the softer feel of the Sunset, this is about what I expected. The deeper sinkage makes the Helix Sunset better for lighter weight side sleepers, while the Helix Moonlight would be better for moderate and heavier weight side sleepers.

Total Bounce: The Helix Moonlight has a top layer of poly foam whereas the Helix Sunset has a top layer of poly foam. One of the biggest ways that this affects the feel of a mattress is in its level of bounce. The Helix Moonlight has a little more than twice the amount of bounce as the Helix Sunset. That extra bounce gives it a more traditional feel and improves sex performance.

Helix Dusk vs. Helix Midnight

Next, let’s talk about the Helix Dusk vs. the Helix Midnight. Both of these are a bit firmer—6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This feel is the standard medium-firm.

DesignHelix DuskHelix Midnight
Firmness6 out of 106 out of 10
Comfort Layer Thickness3.0″3.0″
Total Thickness12.0″12.0″

Either of these mattresses would be a solid pick for moderate-weighted sleepers (in any sleeping position), lightweight sleepers who prefer their stomach or back, as well as some heavy sleepers who prefer to sleep on their side.

Helix Dusk

Helix Dusk material layers

Helix Midnight

Helix Midnight material layers

Both mattresses have 3.0 inches of comfort layer although the feel is a little different. On the Midnight, the top layer is a gel-infused memory foam followed by a layer of poly foam below.

However, on the Dusk, the poly foam is on the top and the memory foam is below. Similar to the Moonlight and Sunset comparison above, having poly foam on top provides a more modern feel while the Midnight has a bit more sinkage, hug, and contour.

Performance-wise, we noted the following conclusions.

  • Cooling: Performance is a tie between the Dusk and Midnight mattress—both are quite good.
  • Motion transfer: Motion transfer was much higher on the Helix Dusk, about twice the levels we see from the Midnight.
  • Response time: Concerning response time, the Helix Dusk is a little faster than the response on the Midnight. The top layer of poly foam vs. memory foam is likely a big contributing factor here.
  • Edge support: The edge support on the Midnight beats out the support on the Helix Dusk, but only slightly.
  • Sex: Sex scores were good for both of these mattresses, with minimal difference between the two.
  • Pressure relief: The Dusk and Midnight have the same high score of 9.5 for pressure relief.
  • Off-gassing: Off-gassing was a minor issue for both of these mattresses and the scores were identical.
  • Company: Since both of these mattresses are made by Helix, the company score is the same as well.

A few other differences to note include the differences in:

Motion Transfer: Motion transfer on the Helix Dusk is significantly worse than the Helix Midnight. Most likely it’s due to the much faster response time (0.3 sec vs. 1.0 sec). Our accelerometer motion tests measured almost twice as much motion on the Dusk. If you sleep with a partner and motion is an issue at all, you’re better off going with the Midnight.

Response Time: The Helix Dusk has nearly instant material response. Materials bounce back to shape in 0.3 seconds, compared to 1.0 seconds on the Midnight. A faster response makes it easier to move around on the mattress and can help prevent any type of “stuck” feeling.

Helix Dawn vs. Helix Twilight

Both the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight are an 8 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This firmness is best suited for back or stomach sleepers, in most cases.

Lightweight sleepers may find this firm of a mattress provides too much pushback and has poor pressure relief. Heavier weight sleepers are more likelyi to enjoy the feel.

DesignHelix DawnHelix Twilight
Firmness8 out of 108 out of 10
Comfort Layer Thickness3.0″4.0″

Although they have the same firmness, one difference is the amount of comfort material. The Helix Dawn has 3.0″ and the Twilight has 4.0″. If you’re concerned with pressure relief on this firmer mattress, I would recommend the Twilight, as it has more comfort material.

Performance-wise, we noted the following conclusions.

  • Cooling: Performance is a tie between the Dawn and the Twilight mattress.
  • Motion transfer: Motion transfer was significantly better on the Helix Twilight than we saw on the Helix Dawn.
  • Response time: Response time was great for both the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight.
  • Edge support: Edge support was good, but not really great on either of these mattresses. Despite the firmer feel, we saw more sinkage at the edge than we really like to for both the Dawn and the Twilight.
  • Sex: Sex scores were good for both of these mattresses, with minimal difference between the two.
  • Pressure relief: The Helix Twilight has 1.0″ more comfort material and, in turn, also has better pressure relief because of it.
  • Off-gassing: Off-gassing was a minor issue for both of these mattresses and the scores were identical.
  • Company: Since both of these mattresses are made by Helix, the company score is the same as well.

A few other differences to note include the differences in:

Firmness & Sinkage: The Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight are on the firmer side of the spectrum and have less sinkage than we noted on softer Helix alternatives. The Helix Dawn has a max sinkage of 2.36″ and the Helix Twilight has a max sinkage of 1.94″.

Total Bounce: The Dawn has notably more bounce at 13.64″ compared to the Twilight’s 9.10″. I would describe the Dawn’s bounce as “very high” and the Twilight at just “moderate”.

Motion Transfer: Neither mattress is great when it comes to motion transfer, but the Dawn is notably worse than the Helix Twilight. The increased motion transfer is a product of the relative firmness of both mattresses.

Helix Midnight Luxe vs. Plus

The last comparison I want to highlight is a special look at the Luxe and the Plus. If you’re a heavier sleeper or just specifically concerned with pressure relief, you may be looking at one of these Helix mattresses.

DesignHelix Midnight LuxeHelix Plus
Firmness6 out of 107 out of 10

The Midnight Luxe is a 6 out of 10 and the Helix Plus is just slightly firmer—a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

Helix Midnight Luxe

Helix Midnight Luxe material layers

Helix Plus

The Midnight Luxe has 5.0″ of comfort foam and the Helix Plus has 4.25″. Both mattresses have a top layer of memory foam.

The Midnight Luxe follows that with a layer of gel memory foam and then poly foam. However Helix Plus follows the top layer with a mid-layer of poly foam and then memory foam.

Performance-wise, we noted the following conclusions.

  • Cooling: Performance is a tie between the Midnight Luxe and the Helix Plus mattress—both are quite good. Despite the thicker comfort layers, the coils really help to keep things cool.
  • Motion transfer: Motion transfer was great on Helix Plus, but the Midnight Luxe edged it out with a slightly better score.
  • Response time: Concerning response time, the Helix Midnight Luxe and the Helix Plus are both very fast.
  • Edge support: The edge support on the Helix Plus is a little better than on the Helix Midnight Luxe. If this is a big issue for you, the Plus would likely be a better fit.
  • Sex: Both of these mattresses have good sex scores, but the Plus is a little better than the Midnight Luxe. Since the Plus has higher levels of bounce and better edge support, these results are about as expected.
  • Pressure relief: For the best pressure relief, the Helix Midnight Luxe takes the win here. It has 0.75″ more comfort material than the Helix Plus, which aids in pressure relief.
  • Off-gassing: Off-gassing was a minor issue for both of these mattresses and the scores were identical.
  • Company: Both of these mattresses are manufactured by Helix and they’ve got the same trial period, but the warranty on the Midnight Luxe is 25 years and the Helix Plus is only 10 years.

A few other differences to note include the differences in:

Sinkage: The Helix Midnight Luxe has a max of 2.15″ of sinkage and the Helix Plus has a max of 1.50″ of sinkage. This gives the Midnight Luxe just a bit more contour, but still not enough to be considered “deep sinkage”. Especially if you’re a side sleeper, this extra level of contour can be helpful for pressure relief and spinal alignment.

Total Bounce: The Helix Plus has slightly higher bounce than the Midnight Luxe. In our performance tests, we documented 7.47″ of bounce on the Midnight Luxe and 9.38″ of bounce on the Helix Plus. If you’re looking for a bit more bounce, the Plus could be a great pick.

The Final Word

Helix’s wide-ranging mattress lineup makes them a good option for almost every sleeper. However, it’s important to get the mattress model that best meets of the needs of your body, weight, and sleeping position.
