The Verdict

Winkbed and Avocado have a wide range of differences and target markets. Winkbed offers higher-end mattresses with luxury quality and better performance, while Avocado has latex hybrids (2 value-priced and one luxury option).

Winkbed has mattresses with a firmness range between Soft (4) and Firm (8). Regardless of what type of sleeper you are, Winkbed is likely to have an option well-suited. Avocado’s more popular value latex hybrids have a narrower firmness—Medium (5.5) to Medium-Firm (6.5). But if you have the budget for the luxury Avocado, the firmness provides a Very Soft (3) feel.

The average price of one of Avocado’s hybrids is mattress is $1,484, considering the Avocado Eco and Avocado Green. When we also consider the high-end Avocado Luxury, priced at $4,639, that average jumps up to $2,535. The average price of a Winkbed mattress is $1,599, the average of 4 different Winkbed mattresses we’ve tested. The lowest-priced mattress from Winkbed is $1,499 for the original queen-sized Winkbed.

When we add in performance factors, Winkbed is the higher performer, with an average overall performance score of 9.15. The average overall performance of Avocado is slightly lower, 9.06, but it’s the Avocado Luxury that actually pulls down Avocado’s performance average.

That being said, Winkbed and Avocado are designed to be two very different mattresses. If you know you want a Latex Hybrid, Avocado could be the better option. The performance of Winkbed’s latex hybrid (Winkbed EcoCloud) is 8.77, lower than all of the Avocado mattresses we have tested. But for a more pronounced contour, Winkbed may be the better pick.

Which Mattress Should You Buy?

The mattresses earning the title for “best overall” from each brand have the highest overall performance. Overall performance is determined by scores from 8 different categories including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex performance, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company.

Sinkage and bounce are also taken into consideration, but they are not direct scoring factors.

Between Winkbed and Avocado, the two top recommendations are Winkbed and Avocado Eco.

A queen-sized Winkbed is $1499, but it also performs in the top 1%, earning 10/10 scores for the following categories: Cooling, Response Time, Edge Support, Pressure Relief, and Off-Gassing. It’s a high-performing hybrid that comes in three firmness levels, making it a great option for sleepers of all sleeping positions and most body weights.

The Avocado Eco is a 10″ latex hybrid mattress with a 2.0″ natural latex comfort layer and pocketed coils. It has a medium feel with deep sinkage and very high bounce. This mattress performs among the top 8% of all mattresses tested to date, but is also a fantastic value (under $1,200 for a queen mattress). In our performance tests, the Avocado Eco earned a 10/10 performance score in the following categories: Motion Transfer and Response Time. If you know that you’re looking for natural latex with sustainable materials, fast response time, and a more generalized contour, the Avocado Eco could be the right choice for you.

Considering performance from both brands, the top mattresses are the Winkbed and Avocado Eco. Both of these mattresses score in the top 10% and are under $1,500, but there are a handful of differences.

The Winkbed ranks among the top 1% of all mattresses tested to date. It is a 14″ hybrid that is available in three firmness levels and is priced under $1,499. This mattress has deep sinkage and moderate levels of bounce. For a value-packed hybrid with top-notch performance, Winkbed is it.

The Avocado Eco, by comparison, doesn’t have near the same performance level. In our tests, it had an overall score of 9.31, which ranks the mattress in the top 5% of all mattresses. The Avocado Eco is a latex hybrid and only 10″ thick. This mattress has deep sinkage and very high bounce.

Overall, these mattresses have pretty different feels and are suited to different budgets. If you are looking for a more generalized contour and don’t want to spend a lot of cash, the Avocado Eco may be a better pick. But if top-tier performance is the most important, the Winkbed may be “the one”.

For side sleepers, my top recommendations would be the Winkbed and Avocado Eco. Both of these mattresses have deep sinkage and solid pressure relief (between 9-10 out of 10).

When lying on your side, pressure relief and support are critical to maintain spinal alignment and prevent painful pressure points. Both of these mattresses do a great job in these performance areas.

One note, the Avocado Eco is under $1,200, whereas the Winkbed is $1,499—about $300 more than Avocado, but also delivers higher overall performance.

If you typically sleep on your back or stomach, you’ll want to opt for something with less sinkage. I’d recommend the Winkbed and Avocado Green

The Winkbed is a hybrid and the Avocado Green is a latex hybrid, so they do have different feels, but both provide support and comfort for sleepers on their back or stomach.

Both the Winkbed and Avocado Green have a Medium-Firm feel, but I will note, if you’re concerned with pressure relief, go for the Winkbed. The Winkbed earned a pressure relief score of 10/10 while the Avocado Green could only secure a score of 8/10 in this category.

Heavy people benefit most from mattresses specifically designed for plus-sized bodies. Avocado doesn’t have a mattress specifically designed for heavier sleepers, but Winkbed has the Winkbed Plus, which clearly takes the win here. The Avocado Eco is the best option from Avocado, but its performance is not ideal for all heavy sleepers.

The Winkbed Plus is a 14.5″ plus-sized mattress with a slightly firm (7) feel and deep sinkage. It has low bounce and great performance, but also a higher price tag—$1,699 for a queen mattress.

From Avocado, we have the Avocado Eco, which boasts higher overall performance than the Avocado Green, but it’s still only a 10″ mattress, and it has a medium (5.5) firmness. Sinkage levels are deep and pressure relief is 9/10… less than the perfect 10/10 from the Saatva HD. That being said, it’s also nearly 1/3 of the price ($1,169 for a queen mattress).

If you’re on a tight budget and don’t necessarily need the ultra-thick profile of the HD, the Avocado may be an option.

If cooling is a top priority for you, my top recommendations would be the Winkbed and Avocado Eco. The Winkbed scores a 10/10 for cooling and the Avocado Eco earns a 9/10, both very impressive scores.

Winkbed is a hybrid mattress that allows a high level of airflow and comfort foam that is breathable and responsive. The Avocado Eco has a pocketed coil base paired with a latex foam comfort layer, but it’s just not able to match the same high cooling performance of the Winkbed.

  • Click here to read our full review of the Winkbed.
  • Click here to read our full review of the Avocado Eco.

For sleepers on a tight budget, I’d recommend the Winkbed and Avocado Eco, but Avocado takes the win for truly being a budget option. The Winkbed has a higher price tag compared to the value of the Avocado Eco. And the performance of the Avocado Eco is still well above average.

  • Click here to read our full review of the Winkbed.
  • Click here to read our full review of the Avocado Eco.

If you struggle with back pain, my top picks would be the Winkbed Plus and Avocado Green. Sleepers who have back pain generally benefit from exceptional pressure relief, minimal to moderate sinkage, and a decent amount of comfort material.

The Avocado has moderate sinkage and high bounce with a medium-firm feel. The Winkbed, on the other hand, has deep sinkage and low bounce and comes in three different firmness options.

But when it comes to pressure relief, Winkbed is the clear winner, earning a 10/10 for pressure relief compared to the 8/10 pressure relief of the Avocado Green.

For couples looking for a mattress that enhances sex performance, I’d recommend the Winkbed EcoCloud and Avocado Eco.

For the best sex performance, we’re looking for high bounce, supportive edge, good cooling, good pressure relief, and minimal noise.

The sex performance scores of both of these mattresses is well above average—9.8 out of 10 for the Winkbed and 9.5 out of 10 for the Avocado Eco. For reference, the average sex score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.3.

If you know you’re looking for a soft mattress, the Winkbed will be your best bet, as it’s significantly higher in performance than the Avocado option, while also having a lower price tag. The Winkbed comes in three firmnesses—Soft (4), Medium-Firm (6), or Slightly Firm (7).

The Avocado Luxury is the only soft option from Avocado, offering a Very Soft feel (3 out of 10) and high-end natural materials. But the softness is going to cost you, as this mattress is $4,639 for a queen mattress, over 3X the cost of the Winkbed.

  • Click here to read our full review of the Winkbed.
  • Click here to read our full review of the Avocado Luxury.

For a Medium-Firm feel, either company could be a good option. From both brands, the top-performing Medium-Firm mattresses would be the Winkbed and Avocado Green.

The Winkbed has a higher overall performance and also a lower price tag than the Avocado. Winkbed has deep sinkage and moderate bounce. By comparison, the Avocado Green also has a medium-firm feel with moderate sinkage and high bounce.

  • Click here to read our full review of the Winkbed.
  • Click here to read our full review of the Avocado Green.

If you know you’re looking for a firm mattress, the Winkbed will be your best bet, as it’s the only mattress in this comparison that has close to a firm feel, 7 out of 10 (slightly firm). The Winkbed comes in three firmnesses—Soft (4), Medium-Firm (6), or Slightly Firm (7). There are no firm Avocado mattresses.

If you’re looking for a soft or firm feel, the Winkebd will likely be the better choice. But for a medium to medium-firm feel, either brand could be well-suited to you.

Winkbed

Avocado Eco

Winkbed EcoCloud

Avocado Green

The average cooling score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6.

The Winkbed scores a 10/10 for exceptional cooling performance. It has a coil-based support and gel foam comfort layer. Together, these materials help to dissipate heat and keep sleepers cool.

The Winkbed EcoCloud, Avocado Eco, and Avocado Green have a cooling score of 9/10, making them close runner-ups.

All three of these mattresses are latex hybrids that use perforated latex for the comfort layer and have a pocketed coil base.

Sinkage Test

Of the 4 mattresses featured in this review, Winkbed has deep sinkage and Avocado has moderate or deep sinkage.

Winkbed Ecocloud Sinkage Test

Avocado Green

Avocado Green Sinkage Test

The average sinkage depth across all mattresses tested to date is 2.18″.

Back and stomach sleepers usually prefer less sinkage, which better maintains proper alignment of their spine. The Avocado Green (2.19″) has the least amount of sinkage, just barely deeper than the average level.

Generally, side sleepers enjoy a deeper level of sinkage as that typically translates to better pressure relief and contour. For deeper sinkage, opt for the Winkbed (2.38″), Winkbed EcoCloud (2.35″), or the Avocado Eco (2.48″). All of these mattresses have more sinkage than average.

Motion Transfer Test

Considering motion transfer, Avocado is consistently better by average, but Winkbed still has at least one mattress that knocks it out of the park.

The mattress with the lower level of motion transfer is the Avocado Eco, with an acceleration range of only 3.40 m/s².

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding motion transfer.

The average motion transfer score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.2. For reference, the average acceleration range is 8.73 m/s², comparing 350+ mattresses tested to date.

The Winkbed and Avocado Green have slightly less motion transfer than average and the Winkbed EcoCloud has considerably more motion transfer than average (14.92 m/s²)

It’s interesting that the EcoCloud has so much more motion transfer, being that the EcoCloud is a latex hybrid just like both of the Avocado mattresses. But at the end of the day, it’s not just about materials, but also design and quality as well.

Response Test

Nearly all of the mattresses in this comparison have 10/10 scores for fast material responsiveness. The one exception is the Avocado Green, which earned a response score of 9.2.

Bounce Test

Bounce performance is a bit of a preferential factor, but between Winkbed and Avocado, there is a wide range of performance levels. Winkbed offers Moderate or Extremely High bounce and Avocado mattresses have High or Very High bounce.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding bounce.

Bounce TestBounce FeelBounce Height

The level of bounce for each mattress is documented in the videos below.

Winkbed

Avocado Eco

Winkbed EcoCloud

The average bounce across all mattresses tested to date is 9.14″.

All 4 of the mattresses in this comparison have more bounce than average— Winkbed (9.91″), Winkbed EcoCloud (14.58″), Avocado Eco (12.19″), and Avocado Green (11.54″).

Mattresses with more bounce are better for ease of movement and increase sex performance. However, higher bounce also typically creates a higher level of motion transfer. So there are pros and cons when it comes to bounce.

Edge Support Test

Talking through edge support, Winkbed is technically the higher performance, but Avocado is not bad, by any means. All 4 of the mattresses in the comparison have better edge support than average.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding edge support.

Winkbed EcoCloud

Winkbed Ecocloud Edge Support

Avocado Green

Avocado Green Edge Support

The average edge support score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6.

The Winkbed (10) and Winkbed EcoCloud (9.9) rank at the top for best edge support. These mattresses have between 2.25″ and 3.25″ of sinkage when seated directly at the edge. Lying support is excellent as well.

The Avocado Green (9.9) also earns a very high score with 3.25″ sinkage and outstanding lying support, like the EcoCloud.

Lastly, the Avocado Eco (8.7) earned a less impressive edge support score and had 4.25″ sitting sinkage. If you commonly find yourself on the direct edge of a mattress, the Eco may not be the right choice, but any of the other 3 mattresses would offer great edge support.

Sex Test

Looking at sex performance, both Winkbed and Avocado are great options, with above-average performance in this area.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding sex.

Sex TestSex ScoreBounceEdge SupportNoisePressure ReliefCooling

Winkbed EcoCloud9.8109.7109.09.0
Avocado Eco9.5108.48.09.09.0
Avocado Green9.59.79.78.08.09.0

The average sex score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.3.

Mattresses that score best in this category have high bounce, good edge support, low noise, and good pressure relief and cooling.

With a sex performance score of 9.8, the Winkbed EcoCloud is our top pick for best mattress for sex among the mattresses in this comparison. The Avocado Eco and Avocado Green are not far behind, with a score of 9.5.

The Winkbed EcoCloud and Avocado Green both have higher levels of bounce and great edge support. Edge support on the Avocado Eco isn’t quite as good as the others, but it does make up for it with higher levels of bounce.

The Winkbed has the lowest sex score, but even that 9.1 score is still well above average score (8.3).

The reality is that coils and latex foam are both independently known for helping a mattress generate more bounce. All of these mattresses are either hybrids or latex hybrids, so bounce is a non-issue here.

Pressure Relief Test

Moving onto pressure relief, the Winkbed had the best performance here. Both Winkbed mattresses scored between 9-10/10 while the Avocado mattresses scored between 8-9/10.

Coming in at the top of the list, we have the Winkbed, which earned a 10/10 for pressure relief. This mattress has a 5.0″ comfort layer, the thickest among all mattresses in this comparison.

The Winkbed EcoCloud and Avocado Eco are slightly behind the original Winkbed, with a score of 9.0. These mattresses have a thinner comfort layer (average thickness is 4.02″).

The Avocado Green has the latest pressure relief score, only 8 out of 10 in our tests. This mattress has a 2.0″ comfort layer, which contributes to its pressure relief issues.

Off-Gassing Test

Looking at off-gassing, the Winkbed original hybrid takes the win, with virtually zero off-gassing upon unboxing the mattress.

The average smell duration across all mattresses tested to date is 6.6 days.

The Avocado Eco and Avocado Green are not far behind the Winkbed. These two mattresses off-gas in only a single day.

The mattress with the longest off-gassing is the Winkbed EcoCloud, which off-gasses in 5 days. But even at the “longest duration”, the EcoCloud still off-gasses faster than the average mattress.

Company

Comparing Winkbed vs. Avocado at a company-wide level, Avocado just barely clinches the win.

The factors that make up the company score include trial period, warranty, shipping, and returns.

Both Winkbed and Avocado have free shipping and free returns, but Winkbed takes the match in all other categories.

Winkbed has a longer trial period and a longer warranty.

Note that only the Avocado Green and Luxury models have the 25 year warranty. The Avocado Eco has a 10 year warranty.
