Best For

  • High levels of bounce
  • Extremely low motion transfer paired with fast response time
  • Organic materials and no toxic additives

Considerations

  • May not be suitable for sleepers over 250 lbs
  • Less than ideal edge support
  • Shorter trial and warranty than the Avocado Green mattress

Our Verdict

The Avocado Eco mattress is a 10″ thick organic latex hybrid with great performance and a lower price tag than many other organic or all-natural options.

It has excellent cooling, deep sinkage, extremely low motion transfer, extremely fast response time, very high bounce, very good edge support, as well as excellent sex performance, pressure relief, and off-gassing.

While this mattress may not be suitable for larger sleepers, if you’re 250 lbs. or less, it’s a good pick for both lighter and moderate-weight sleepers who want a medium-firm mattress with organic materials and a balanced feel.

How is Avocado Eco Different?

The Avocado Eco mattress has better overall performance than average as well as a price point that falls below the average—26% less than the average latex hybrid.

Advantages

Specific advantages of the Avocado Eco include slightly better cooling performance, fast material response time, and low levels of motion transfer.

Neutral Factors

This mattress has 14% deeper sinkage than average as well as 26% higher levels of bounce. These two factors are considered “neutral” because they are more preferential instead of inherently good or bad.

Different sleepers prefer different feels in a mattress, but it’s definitely a difference worth noting. If you don’t want to engage so deeply with a mattress, the Avocado Eco may not be the best pick for you.

Disadvantages

Disadvantages include slightly deeper sinkage when seated directly at the edge of the mattress as well as a thinner overall thickness (more of a disadvantage for heavier sleepers than lighter sleepers).

Cooling Test

Cooling performance on the Avocado Eco was excellent. During our cooling tests, I did not feel any notable level of heat retention around my body.

Baseline Temp.

81.2° F

Max Temp.

89.6° F

Ending Temp.

82.6° F

The mattress did a fantastic job at breathing well and releasing heat, keeping the surface level temperature comfortable. Looking at our objective data, we measured a maximum surface level temperature of 89.6° F.

This is slightly below the average maximum temperature across all of our tests to date, which is 89.9° F.

Max Temp.

Ending Temp

Avocado Eco after cooling test

  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

From the 0 to 1 minute measurement period, the Avocado Eco dropped 3.9°, just slightly worse than the average of 4.0°F.

Avocado Eco continued with another notable drop from 1 to 2 minutes, dropping to 83.6°, a decline of 2.1°. The vast majority of the temperature reduction occurred between 0 and 2 minutes. From 0 to 2 minutes there was a 6.0° drop (85.7% of the total reduction over 5 minutes).

Over the 5-minute period, the total temperature dropped by 7.0°. This indicates that the vast majority of retained heat is released by the 2-minute mark. It’s not the absolute fastest heat dissipation curve we’ve seen, but it’s still respectably good.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Heat Dissipation Chart Avocado Eco
Heat Dissipation Chart Avocado Eco

When we consider the material construction of the Avocado Eco mattress it makes sense. The mattress only uses a 2.0” comfort layer, and said comfort layer is made entirely of natural latex.

Natural latex as a material doesn’t retain as much heat as poly foam and memory foam, and tends to release heat better.

The support layer is an 8.0” pocketed coil base, which supplies ample airflow, further improving breathability. All things considered, excellent cooling performance.

The Avocado Eco mattress will be plenty cool enough for the vast majority of sleepers.

Sinkage Test

The Avocado Eco mattress has a deep level of sinkage. In our tests, we measured 2.48” sinkage.

Baseline Temp.

2.48″

Max Temp.

Deep

This is 0.27” deeper than the average, based on all of our mattress tests to date, which is 2.21”.

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Avocado Eco sinkage test
Avocado Eco sinkage test

The Avocado Eco’s contour is extremely generalized around the body, which is typically the case with latex mattresses. However, this is one of the more extreme cases I’ve tested.

It creates an almost circular depression where your body lies. It’s not necessarily a bad feel, but a more unique feel. This type of contouring is in contrast to the feel that memory foam mattresses create, which is more exacting and precise around the shape of your body.

10

Motion Transfer Test

The Avocado Eco mattress has an extremely low level of motion transfer. In our tests, we measured 3.40 m/s^² of acceleration range. This is significantly better than the average.

Max. Acceleration

1.87 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-1.53 m/s²

Accel. Range

3.40 m/s²

On average, based on all of our tests to date, we have measured an average acceleration range of 8.34 m/s^².

The Avocado Eco has less than half the motion that we typically see in our tests. Honestly, the level of motion is a bit surprising.

Latex tends to have more motion, as do pocketed coils. However, despite the higher level of bounce and increased response of these materials, the Avocado Eco manages motion transfer well.

The level of motion transfer is documented in the video below.

While the motion transfer peaks were indeed lower than what we typically see, the motion duration was considerably longer. In general, I like to see most of the energy dissipated by 0.3 seconds.

On the Avocado Eco we saw a higher level of motion transfer up until 0.21 seconds, with moderate motion until 1.20 seconds.

So you will experience relatively restrained energy spikes, but that energy will move around the mattress for longer than many others we’ve tested to date.

Avocado Eco motion transfer chart
Avocado Eco motion transfer chart

Our 1.1 scoring system bases motion transfer scores on the total acceleration range, not the motion duration.

As a result, it’s possible that the Avocado Eco’s motion transfer score is a more favorable than it should be, given the total duration of motion following a motion-generating event.

10

Response Test

Response time is extremely fast on the Avocado Eco. In our tests, we measured a mostly recovered material response time 0.2 seconds and a full material recovery of 0.3 seconds.

Mostly Recovered

0.2 sec.

Complete Recovery

0.3 sec.

This is tied for the fastest material response of any mattress we’ve tested to date (tied with several mattresses, but still tied for 1st).

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

When it comes to material response and recovery times it really doesn’t get any faster than latex. Latex as a material type is extremely responsive, has great bounce, and returns to shape effectively instantly.

You will never feel stuck or entrapped by the response of the Avocado Eco mattress.

Bounce Test

The Avocado Eco has a very high level of bounce. In our tests, we measured 12.19” of bounce. This is 2.82” more bounce than the average of 9.37”, based on all of our mattress tests to date.

Max. Depth

6.02″

Max. Rebound

6.17″

Total Bounce

12.19″

Both natural latex and pocketed coils have a high bounce. So it’s no surprise that we saw this level of bounce.

Max. Sinkage Depth

Avocado Eco max bounce depth
Avocado Eco max bounce depth

Max Bounce Height

Avocado Eco max bounce height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

In general, I like to see a bounce in the 8-12” range. It’s enough to make it easy to move around on the mattress, prevent you from feeling stuck, and improve sex, but not so much as to create new problems.

The Avocado Eco is just a bit over my sweet spot threshold, but nothing dramatic.

Even so, there is no question that the Avocado Eco has a high level of bounce. If you like the bounce feeling from more traditional spring mattresses you’ll likely love the feel.

If you prefer the more restrained feel present on many memory and poly foam mattresses, then you’ll likely dislike this feel.

9.4

Edge Support Test

Edge support on the Avocado Eco mattress was very good. In our tests, I measured 4.25” of sinkage while sitting directly on the edge of the mattress.

Max Sinkage

4.25″

Lying Support

Excellent

This is 0.40” less sinkage compared to the average of 4.65”, based on all of our mattress tests to date.

Edge support was quite a bit better than I expected. Typically with mattresses 10” or thinner and with more budget-friendly mattresses, you get deeper edge compression.

However, we don’t see that here. It’s likely the thinner comfort layer is helping to improve edge support.

Furthermore, the pocketed coil base does appear to be fairly robust when it comes to edge support.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Edge support while lying directly on the edge of the mattress was excellent.

I felt well supported in all sleeping positions even with my body lying directly on the edge of the mattress. The Avocado Eco does a nice job of providing plenty of support at the edge. I did not feel any sensation of being rolled off the mattress or any lack of support.

9.7

Sex Test

The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.

These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce60%10Very High
Edge Support20%9.4Very Good
Noise10%9Moderate
Pressure Relief5%9.5Excellent
Cooling5%9.5Excellent

For the Avocado Eco, these individual factors generated a sex score of 9.7.

Breaking down this score into five factors, we saw excellent (high) levels of bounce, good edge support, low noise, good pressure relief, and good cooling.

Being a hybrid, the Avocado is slightly noisier than a 100% foam mattress, but not as noisy as a classic innerspring.

9.5

Pressure Relief Test

Pressure relief on the Avocado Eco mattress was excellent. Throughout our tests, I felt a fantastic level of pressure relief in all sleeping positions.

Comfort Layer

2.0″

Support Layer

8.0″

That mattress has a medium to medium-firm feel and allows for plenty of hug around the body. Notably, the type of hug is more traditional and generalized around the body.

Many types of foam, especially memory foam, create a more exacting type of contour that forms to your exact shape. The Avocado Eco mattress is less exacting.

It feels more like a circular depression in the area where your body is lying. This isn’t necessarily bad or good, it’s just a certain type of pressure relief feel.

Some will love it, others won’t.

Avocado Eco relaxing

If you’ve slept on a traditional or innerspring mattress for many years, this type of feel is usually easier to transition to.

As opposed to if you’ve been sleeping on more exacting poly foam or memory foam, which creates a very different feel. In any case, the total pressure relief picture is excellent.

9.9

Off-Gassing Test

Upon the initial unboxing, I experienced a minor level of smell. The smell wasn’t a typical off-gassing smell, but instead smelled like the natural textiles and materials used in the Avocado Eco mattress.

Company

The company score takes a look at factors that may influence your experience with the mattress.

Factors include length of the trial period, warranty, shipping / return costs, and country of origin.

Avocado has pretty good company policies and consumer ratings.

The Avocado Eco mattress comes with a 100-night trial period and a 10-year warranty. Shipping is free and returns are free.

There is a 30-night adjustment period for the first month you own the mattress. In this window of time, you cannot initiate a return, and is intended to give your body time to get used to the mattress.

Need more time?

If you’re looking for a longer trial period or longer warranty, you may want to check out the Avocado Green mattress. This mattress comes with a 365-night trial period and a 25-year warranty.

How firm is the Avocado Eco?

The Avocado Eco mattress has a firmness of 5.5 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm. This is slightly softer than we oftentimes see for other medium mattresses but is a suitable firmness for a wide range of sleepers.

firmness - 5.5 out of 10

It has a very generalized contour around the body. There is an almost circular depression in the area where your body is lying. Even so, it still creates a nice level of pressure relief.

Support & Sleeping Positions

Overall, I found support to be excellent on the Avocado Eco mattress. The mattress did a nice job of supporting my body weight in all sleeping positions.

The Avocado Eco mattress warranty states that it supports up to 850 pounds. While that’s great from a warranty perspective, it’s not the type of mattress I would recommend for heavier-weight sleepers.

Sleeper WeightStomach SleepersSide SleepersBack Sleepers
Under 150 lbs.YesMaybeYes
150-250 lbs.YesMaybeYes
250-300 lbs.NoNoNo

With only 2.0” of comfort material and a 10” total profile, the mattress is perfectly fine for lighter and moderate-weight sleepers, but heavier-weight sleepers, especially 250 pounds and up, should opt for a different mattress.

I experienced a fairly significant level of sinkage in the mid-section while on my side.

Avocado Eco edge support - side sleeping with vest
Avocado Eco edge support – side sleeping with vest

It’s still enough that it’s supportive for me at 140 pounds, but there is no question in mind that heavier-weight sleepers are likely going to experience excessive sinkage, thereby creating support issues.

As a result, I would not recommend the Avocado Eco mattress to sleepers over 250 pounds. For everyone else, I am confident it will provide plenty of support to all sleeping positions.

Design

The Avocado Eco mattress is a 10″ thick organic latex hybrid. It includes natural organic latex, pocketed coils, and an organic cotton and wool cover.

Materials

The materials of the Avocado Eco mattress include two layers.

  • 2.0″ natural latex
  • 8.0″ pocketed coils
Avocado Eco material layers

These layers are encased in an organic wool fire barrier and organic cotton cover.

The Cover

The cover itself is a blend of organic cotton and organic wool, which are combined to provide comfort, fire protection, and noise absorption from the coils.

On the top of the mattress are simple tufted rounds, which give it a finished look without being overdone.

Avocado Eco materials

The sides of the mattress have a modern vertical stitching pattern and the whole mattress is very neutral and natural in its material selection.

On the sides, there are four reinforced handles for easily transporting the mattress as well as a coordinating dark green cording that goes around the edge of the bottom of the mattress.

The Comfort Layer

Below the cover is the comfort layer, which is made of a 2.0″ slab of perforated natural latex.

Natural latex is made from the sap of a rubber tree and is known for its exceptional cooling, ultra-fast response time, and limited motion transfer.

The perforations help with breathability and response, allowing the mattress to adapt quickly to changes and keep you comfortable while sleeping.

The Support Layer

Below the natural latex is an 8.0″ thick layer of pocketed coils. Depending on the size of mattress you get, there are up to 975 coils in this layer, which help with even weight distribution and pressure relief.

Avocado Eco pocketed coil layer

Pocketing the coils allows them to move independently of each other, different than a classic innerspring mattress.

Below the coils, there is the same organic wool and organic cotton that wraps the top of the mattress.

Product Evolution

The Avocado Eco mattress was introduced in January of 2022. Since its release, there have been no changes to this mattress. As changes develop, we will update this section accordingly.
