Winkbed

Type: Hybrid, Latex Hybrid, or Memory Foam
Firmness: 4 – 7 out of 10

Avocado

Type: Latex Hybrid (Organic) with optional pillow top
Firmness: 6 – 6.5 out of 10

Our Verdict

The biggest difference between Winkbed and Avocado are the material choices.

Avocado is a latex hybrid that uses extensive organic certified materials throughout their mattress lineup. Their material quality and certifications run deep. The latex hybrid design creates a more generalized contouring hug, higher bounce, excellent great, and great durability.

Winkbed’s flagship has a more modern hybrid design. It has a more balanced and traditional feel, while also being notably less expensive. Winkbed also offers a latex hybrid, though the material / organic certifications are less impressive than Avocado.

In my view, Winkbed vs. Avocado is a choice between latex hybrid and a regular hybrid. If you like and prefer the latex hybrid then I would recommend Avocado’s Eco or Green over the Winkbed EcoCloud, both of which scored notably better.

However, if you are merely looking for a high performance hybrid and don’t care as much for the organic certifications, you can save significant money while still receiving a high performance mattress with the flagship Winkbed.

Performance Tests

At NapLab, we put each mattress to the test.

We test 10 different factors that impact the comfort, feel, and value of the mattress. Testing categories include:

  1. Cooling
  2. Sinkage
  3. Motion Transfer
  4. Response
  5. Bounce
  6. Edge Support
  7. Sex
  8. Pressure Relief
  9. Off-Gassing
  10. Company

Sinkage and bounce are oftentimes preferential factors, so there is no numerical score for these factors. Those two factors aside, you can use the table to check the score for the other 8 factors below.

The Winkbed Plus (hybrid) is also tied for best cooling and best pressure relief, as well as having the most sinkage. This mattress is also tied for slowest response time.

The Winkbed GravityLux (memory foam) has the least amount of sinkage among these mattresses as well as the fastest response time and least amount of bounce.

The Winkbed EcoCloud (latex hybrid) is tied for fastest response time, most bounce, and ranked best for sex.

The Avocado Eco (latex hybrid) has the lowest motion transfer and fastest response time.

The Avocado Green (latex hybrid) only earned one honorable mention as the mattress with the slowest response time.

Cooling Test

The cooling performances on the Winkbed outscored Avocado in 2 out of the 4 mattresses. That being said, we’re essentially comparing latex to hybrids here (excluding the one memory foam mattress, Winkbed GravityLux).

Both latex foam and coil-based hybrids generally offer exceptional cooling performance.

Motion Transfer

The score levels concerning motion transfer vary greatly between these 6 mattresses, with a few performing well, but many having much higher levels of motion transfer than average.

Motion Transfer TestScoreAcc. Range
Avocado Eco103.40 m/s²
Avocado Green9.47.31 m/s²

Winkbed EcoCloud7.514.92 m/s²
Winkbed GravityLux8.311.85 m/s²
Winkbed Plus8.89.67 m/s²

The average amount of motion transfer is 5.83 m/s², based on all of our mattress tests to date.

Of these six mattresses tested, four of them have more motion transfer than average.

The Avocado Eco scored a perfect 10, with significantly less motion transfer than the average.

The Winkbed Luxury Hybrid was about average and the Avocado Green was slightly beyond average.

The Winkbed Plus had close to 2X the average with Winkbed GravityLux trailing close behind, charting 11.85 m/s².

The mattress with the highest motion transfer is the Winkbed EcoCloud at 14.92 m/s², at nearly 3X the average level.

The level of motion transfer is documented in the video below. The graphs which follow each video show a quantifiable version of motion transfer based on accelerometer data.

Winkbed Luxury Firm Motion Transfer

Winkbed Motion Transfer Chart

The Winkbed Luxury Firm had a peak motion of around 2.5 m/s² and that energy continued for slightly beyond 1 full second. This performance was about average, compared to all mattresses we’ve tested.

Winkbed Plus Motion Transfer

Winkbed Plus Motion Transfer Chart

On the Winkbed Plus, motion transfer peaked at around 4.5 m/s² and continued for about 1 full second. This is about 2X the average among all mattresses that we’ve tested to date. But strictly comparing mattresses in this comparison, the Plus is nearly on par with the average.

Avocado Green Motion Transfer

Avocado Green Motion Transfer Chart
Avocado Green motion transfer chart

The Avocado Green mattress was slightly beyond average, with just over 4 m/s² from the initial drop. This energy continued for approx. 1.5 seconds before leveling off.

Avocado Eco Motion Transfer

Avocado Eco Motion Transfer Chart
Avocado Eco motion transfer chart

The Avocado Eco has the best motion transfer among all other mattresses in this comparison. Although the chart looks chaotic, like the others, check the labels. As you can see, motion transfer peaks at only 2 m/s², unlike all others which peak anywhere from 2-8 m/s².

Motion continues to transfer across the mattress until beyond 1.5 seconds, but gradually decreases.

Winkbed EcoCloud Motion Transfer

Winkbed Ecocloud Motion Transfer Chart
Winkbed Ecocloud Motion Transfer Chart

The Winkbed EcoCloud experienced the highest levels of motion transfer among all mattresses in this comparison with nearly 8 m/s² of motion at the initial drop and energy continuing for over 1.7 seconds.

Winkbed GravityLux Motion Transfer

Winkbed Gravitylux Motion Transfer Chart
Winkbed Gravitylux Motion Transfer Chart

The Winkbed GravityLux, being the only memory foam mattress in this comparison, definitely has an advantage when it comes to deadening motion transfer. On this mattress, it was essentially all absorbed by just beyond 0.5 seconds.

Response Test

The response times in this head-to-head comparison showed very fast performance on both Winkbed and Avocado—perfect scores across the board.

Bounce Test

Avocado GreenHigh11.54″
WinkbedModerate9.91″
Winkbed EcoCloudExtremely High14.58″

Winkbed PlusLow6.75″

The average level of bounce across all mattresses tested to date is 9.74″.

The Winkbed GravityLux had the lowest amount of bounce in this comparison, only 3.83″ which is extremely low. The fact that this mattress has no coils and is made of memory foam are big factors that contribute to the good score.

The Winkbed Plus has about 2X more bounce than the GravityLux, but still less bounce than average, generating a bounce range of only 6.75″.

The Winkbed Hybrid was about average, at 9.91″ of bounce.

Bounce, in general, is a bit of a subjective factor, but certainly one you’ll want to consider. More bounce gives the mattress a more traditional feel, makes it easier to move around on it, and improves sex.

Bounce levels can also be viewed in real-time via the short video clips below.

Sex Test

Our sex rating formula looks at 5 different factors weighted based on their importance.

Sex Percent Chart

All factors are not equal in terms of significance, but each plays an important role.

Through our tests, we subjectively assigned the following percentages to each category within the overall sex score:

  • Bounce: 60%
  • Edge Support: 20%
  • Noise: 10%
  • Pressure Relief: 5%
  • Cooling: 5%

Using this method, we generated the following scores below:

Sex TestSex ScoreBounceEdge SupportNoisePressure ReliefCooling
Avocado Eco9.7109.49.09.59.5
Avocado Green9.8109.99.09.09.5
Winkbed9.910109.01010
Winkbed EcoCloud9.9109.9109.59.5
Winkbed GravityLux9.18.510109.59.5
Winkbed Plus9.49.2109.01010

Of all of these mattresses, the Winkbed Luxury Firm Hybrid and Winkbed EcoCloud were the top-performing mattresses. Both of these have high bounce, fantastic edge support, excellent pressure relief, and great cooling as well—really the whole package.

The Avocado Green and Avocado Eco were close runner-ups with respective scores of 9.7 and 9.8. Being latex hybrids, these mattresses have high bounce, but don’t match the Winkbed hybrids in terms of edge support and pressure relief.

The Winkbed Plus has a thicker comfort layer and a slightly different design, resulting in lower levels of bounce. When it comes to sex, this can effectively kill a mattress’s sex score.

The lowest sex score on this comparison comes from the Winkbed GravityLux memory foam mattress. No coils mean a low bounce for the GravityLux and low bounce means low sex score.

Pressure Relief Test

Pressure relief is good on both Avocado and Winkbed mattresses.

Pressure Relief TestScoreComfort LayerSupport Layer
Avocado Eco9.52.0″8.0″
Avocado Green9.02.0″9.0″
Winkbed105.0″9.0″
Winkbed EcoCloud9.54.0″8.0″
Winkbed GravityLux9.54.0″6.0″
Winkbed Plus105.5″9.0″

These mattresses have a range of comfort layer thicknesses, ranging from 2-5″. In our experience, thicker comfort layers produce mattresses with better pressure relief scores. This trend proved true between Avocado and Winkbed as well.

For the best pressure relief, stick with Winkbed mattresses, which all scored 9.5 or higher.

Off-Gassing Test

Moving right along, let’s talk about off-gassing. Most of these mattresses did not have issues with off-gassing, with a couple of exceptions being the Winkbed GravityLux or EcoCloud.

Off-Gassing TestScoreInitial SmellOff-Gassing Period
Avocado Eco9.9Minor1 days
Avocado Green9.9Strong1 days
Winkbed10None0 days
Winkbed EcoCloud9.6Strong5 days
Winkbed GravityLux9.8Strong3 days
Winkbed Plus9.9Moderate1 days

Right out of the box, the smell was minimal on most of these mattresses and fully dissipated within 1 day or less.

The average amount of time that it usually takes a mattress to off-gas is 3.5 days so all of these mattresses would be considered better than average in this category.

The Winkbed GravityLux had a much stronger smell out of the box and that smell took 3 days to dissipate. The Winkbed EcoCloud also had a strong smell and that odor took even longer, 5 full days, to dissipate.

Company

When looking at the companies both have good terms, each with their own advantages.

CompanyAvocadoWinkbed
Trial Period365 nights120 nights
Warranty25 yearsLifetime

Country of OriginUSAUSA

The Avocado mattresses have a longer trial, 365 nights, giving sleepers a solid year to decide if the mattress is right. Their mattresses are backed by a 25-year warranty.

Winkbed mattresses only have a 120-night trial period, but they do have a lifetime warranty.

In most cases, you will likely know if this mattress is the right pick for you within the first 120 nights so the difference in trial length may not be a huge factor for all sleepers.

Firmness

The firmness level of Winkbed and Avocado ranges from 4 to 7 out of 10, depending on which mattress you’re looking at.

The Winkbed GravityLux and Winkbed Soft, a soft version of the Original Winkbed Hybrid, offers the softest feel among all mattresses listed in this comparison, a 4 out of 10 on the firmness scale (where 10 is the most firm). Lighter and moderate-weight side sleepers are most likely to enjoy the soft feel.

Firmness Chart 4

The Winkbed EcoCloud is slightly firmer than the Winkbed Soft, a 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This mattress can support slightly heavier sleepers or sleepers who are looking for a little more support.

Firmness Chart 5

The Winkbed Luxury Firm and Winkbed GravityLux are both a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This is a firmness with a pretty wide appeal that suits most sleepers, offering a balance between support and comfort.

Firmness Chart 6

The Avocado Green is just slightly firmer than this at 6.5 out of 10.

The Winkbed Firm and Winkbed Plus are both a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

Firmness Chart 7

This is a tad firmer than the mattresses above. Sleepers who may benefit from this slightly firmer feel would include back or stomach sleepers as well as heavier sleepers looking for a little extra support.

Lastly, the Winkbed GravityLux is also available in a firm feel, 8 out of 10.

Support & Sleeping Positions

As you might imagine, not all firmnesses are suitable for all sleepers. It’s important to know your ideal firmness prior to purchasing a new mattress.

Your ideal firmness comes down to sleeper size, sleeping position, and personal preference.

What Firmness Is Right For You3

The chart above helps to provide a firmness range of mattresses you may want to consider based on two of these factors. Personal preference can move the needle of ideal firmness a little as well, so be sure to consider all factors of the mattress before making a final selection.

Design

As mentioned above, all of these featured mattresses are hybrid blends that combine different foams with pocketed coils, with the one exception being the Winkbed GravityLux. The GravityLux mattress is a 10″ memory foam mattress.

Which Mattress Should You Buy?

In the matchup of Winkbed vs. Avocado which mattress is best for you? Here are my top recommendations for which sleepers would benefit from each mattress.

Should You Buy the Winkbed Original Hybrid?

I would recommend the Winkbed Original Hybrid if you’re looking for:

  • Balanced performance. Among all of the mattresses compared here the Winkbed Luxury Firm has the most balanced feel. It has a medium firmness, moderate to deep sinkage, low motion, fast response, and great cooling. It is ideal for most body types and all sleeping positions.
  • Good edge support. With only 2.25″ of compression, the Winkbed Luxury Firm has objectively the best edge support of any mattress we’ve tested to date.

I would recommend the Winkbed Soft for the following:

  • Lightweight side sleepers. This mattress has a deeper level of hug compared to the Winkbed Luxury Firm. This kind of hug can be beneficial to lightweight sleepers, who may not engage with support layers as well on firmer mattresses.

I would recommend the Winkbed Firm for the following:

  • Heavier back or stomach sleepers. The firmer feel of this version provides more push back and support for these kinds of sleepers.

Click here to learn more or to check the price of the Winkbed Original (Soft, Luxury Firm, or Firm) mattress.

Should You Buy the Winkbed Plus?

I would recommend the Winkbed Plus for the following:

  • Heavier sleepers. Sleepers over 250 lbs. can greatly benefit from the thicker profile of the Winkbed Plus. In addition, the firmer feel can help provide better support for heavier sleepers.
  • Firm feel. Regardless of your body weight, if you simply want a firm to very firm feel, the Winkbed Plus is a good choice. Heavier bodies and some back / stomach sleepers may enjoy the firm feel of the Winkbed Plus.

Click here to learn more or to check the price of the Winkbed Plus mattress.

Should You Buy the Avocado Green?

I would recommend the Avocado Green for the following:

  • Organic materials. The Avocado Green mattress is made of organic cotton and organic wool—100% GOLS certified, lacking polyester, polyurethane, and toxic fire retardants.
  • High engagement. This mattress has high levels of bounce and a very fast response time.

Click here to learn more or to check the price of the Avocado Green mattress.

Should You Buy the Avocado Eco?

I would recommend the Avocado Eco for the following:

  • Organic materials. The Avocado Eco mattress is made of organic cotton and organic wool—100% GOLS certified, lacking polyester, polyurethane, and toxic fire retardants.
  • Savings. With many of the advantages of the Avocado Green, the Avocado Eco delivers at a fraction of the cost. It skips the bottom layer of latex foam and has a slightly different comfort layer (although the same 2″ thickness).

Click here to learn more or to check the price of the Avocado Eco mattress.

Should You Buy the Winkbed EcoCloud?

I would recommend the Winkbed EcoCloud for the following:

  • Long warranty. If you’re looking for a latex hybrid (like Avocado), but with the lifetime warranty of Winkbeds, the Winkbed EcoCloud is a solid option.
  • Fast response: The EcoCloud is tied for the fastest response time and also the most bounce. These two factors make the mattress great for sex.

Click here to learn more or to check the price of the Winkbed EcoCloud mattress.

Should You Buy the Winkbed GravityLux?

I would recommend the Winkbed GravityLux for the following:

  • Less sinkage. The GravityLux mattress has the least amount of sinkage among all mattresses tested in this comparison.
  • Less motion transfer. Being memory foam and lacking coils, the GravityLux has the least amount of motion transfer. If you’re sensitive to motion during the night or sleep with a partner with tosses and turns, I would strongly recommend the GravityLux for this reason (above the others).

Click here to learn more or to check the price of the Winkbed GravityLux mattress.

The Final Word

Both Avocado and Winkbed make good mattresses, but it’s not exactly apples to apples. Avocado specializes in latex hybrids, while Winkbed has a wider collection—hybrids, latex hybrids, or memory foam mattresses (100% foam).

Generally speaking, I would say Avocado is the better choice if you want to go with a latex hybrid and/or an organic / natural mattress, while Winkbed is the better choice for a more modern hybrid mattress that has a balanced luxury feel.

FAQ

How long do Winkbed mattresses last?

Winkbed mattresses are designed to last between 12-15 years but may last as long as 20 years. The mattress comes with a lifetime warranty.

Why do Avocado mattresses smell?

Avocado mattresses smell due to the materials used. Avocado’s are made using natural latex, wool, and other natural materials. These materials have a strong odor, especially when they are new. Avocado (like most mattresses) lose their smell over a period of usually a few days or week.

Do Winkbeds sag?

Sagging and indentations are a normal part of a mattress’s wear and tear. That being said, the Winkbed lifetime warranty covers any sagging greater than 1.5″ for as long as you own the mattress.

Do Avocado mattresses sag?

Yes, all mattresses will sag over time. However, latex resists sagging better than most other mattress materials. As a result, Avocado sagging should be less dramatic. In addition, placing the Avocado (or any mattress) on a high performance supportive foundation will ensure the sagging is less dramatic.

Which mattress is similar to Winkbed?

The Winkbed mattress is considered a luxury hybrid. Comparable hybrids would include: Saatva, Bear Elite Hybrid, Nolah Evolution 15, or the Nest Bedding Sparrow.

Do you flip an Avocado mattress?

No, Avocado mattresses are not flippable. They are singled sided mattresses only.

Is Winkbed better than Avocado?

Yes, specifically looking at our performance scores, Winkbed ranked higher than Avocado on every single mattress we tested.

To date, we’ve tested five Winkbed mattresses and two Avocado mattresses. The average of those individual scores gives a slight advantage to Winkbed over Avocado.

Average score of Winkbed mattresses: 9.71
Average score of Avocado mattresses: 9.64
