Best For
- Outstanding pressure relief. The AS3 has the perfect combination of softness, contour, and sinkage for an amazing feel.
- Excellent cooling performance, especially for an all foam mattress.
Considerations
- Sitting edge support leaves something to be desired
- Fast response at 0.5 seconds, but not the absolute fastest on the market
Our Verdict
The Amerisleep AS3 is a 12″ thick foam mattress. It has a 3.0″ comfort layer with a 3.0″ thick transitional layer and 6.0″ foam base. The AS3 has the same top layer as the AS3 Hybrid, but skips the pocketed coil base in lieu of a 100% foam base.
It has moderate sinkage and low bounce that offers a dramatic contour with lots of hug.
It comes in a single firmness, a medium 5 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm. This makes it a great fit for all body weights and sleeping positions.
The Amerisleep AS3 received an overall score of 8.99, placing it in the top 20% of all mattresses we’ve tested to date. Compared to other memory foam mattresses it places in the top 5%.
For a queen mattress, it costs $1,249, 11% more expensive than the average memory foam mattress. While it does cost a little more, it has a high degree of performance, especially when compared to other memory foam mattresses.

How is the AS3 Different?
The Amerisleep AS3 all-foam mattress has an above-average overall performance with a price that is basically right at the average ($124 less than average, if we’re being technical).
Advantages
The AS3 has slightly better cooling than average as well as much lower levels of motion transfer, 76% less motion than average). Thanks to the high quality memory foam, pressure relief is also better than average.
Neutral Factors
Sinkage levels are almost exactly at the average and bounce levels are 29% lower than average. Both sinkage and bounce are more of a preferential factor than anything else since different sleepers tend to have different preferences in these areas.
Disadvantages
Response time is slightly slower than average and the mattress also takes a hit for poorer sex performance (thanks to the lower levels of bounce).
Cooling Test
The Amerisleep AS3 has excellent cooling performance. During our tests, I did not feel warm or experience any significant heat retention spots.
You can see the data from our performance tests below.
Baseline Temp.
73.9° F
Max Temp.
85.4° F
Ending Temp.
76.9° F
The design of the AS3 includes 3.0” of Amerisleep’s proprietary memory foam, Bio-Pur, on top followed by a 2.0” layer of convoluted polyfoam and a 7.0” support foam base.
The top layer is an open-cell structure memory foam, which allows improved air flow, helping keep sleepers cooler.
Max Temp.
Ending Temp
- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
The memory foam isn’t as dense as more traditional memory foams, responds faster, and isn’t heat reactive.
These factors, in combination with the 2.0” transitional poly foam layer that uses convolutes (cut channels within the foam to increase airflow) work together to keep sleepers cooler.
Notably, the AS3 isn’t as cool as the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid. However, it’s not far behind. As far as memory foam mattresses go, this is basically as good as it gets in terms of cooling performance.
Overall, I was impressed with the materials, design, and overall cooling performance of the AS3.
Heat Dissipation Over Time
Sinkage Test
Sinkage is moderate for the Amerisleep AS3. In our pressure point tests, we measured 2.16” of sinkage. This is just a little more than the average across all mattresses we’ve tested to date, which is a sinkage of 2.15”.
Sinkage Depth
2.16
Sinkage Feel
Moderate
The level of sinkage is also documented in the image below.
The Amerisleep AS3 has a modern memory foam feel. There is a dramatic contour, with lots of hug around the body.
Despite the significant contour, the level of sinkage is still fairly restrained, providing a more balanced feel for sleepers.
Motion Transfer Test
Motion transfer on the Amerisleep AS3 is incredibly low. The level of motion transfer is documented in the video below.
In our tests, we measured an acceleration range of 2.11 m/s². This is significantly better than the average across all mattresses we’ve tested to date, which is 8.80 m/s².
Max. Acceleration
0.94 m/s²
Min. Acceleration
-1.17 m/s²
Accel. Range
2.11 m/s²
At 2.11 m/s², the Amerisleep’s incredibly low motion transfer makes it an amazing choice for couples. With such low motion levels, it helps to ensure that you won’t disturb your partner while getting in and out of bed, or changing positions during the night.
Response Test
The Amerisleep AS3 has a fast response time. In our tests, the AS3 was able to mostly recover to its original shape within 0.5 seconds, and a full recovery of all materials takes 0.8 seconds.
Mostly Recovered
0.5 sec.
Complete Recovery
0.8 sec.
These results are comparable to the average across all mattresses we’ve tested to date. On average, we see mattresses mostly recovered within 0.41 seconds and full recovery by 0.92 seconds.
The Amerisleep AS3 isn’t the absolute fastest response time we’ve tested, but for the vast majority of sleepers, it should be fast enough.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
The fastest mattresses we’ve tested are mostly recovered by 0.2 seconds and full material recovery is complete by 0.3 seconds.
If you do need a mattress with the absolute fastest response time possible check out the Ghostbed Luxe, Purple Hybrid, or Winkbed, all of which are tied for the fastest responding mattresses we’ve tested (0.2 seconds mostly recovered, 0.3 seconds fully recovered).
Bounce Test
The Amerisleep AS3 mattress has a moderately low level of bounce. In our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 6.71”.
Max. Depth
5.31″
Max. Rebound
1.40″
Total Bounce
6.71″
This is a good bit below the average bounce height, which is 9.50”. Generally, I like to see bounce at a height of 8-12”.
Max. Sinkage Depth
Max Bounce Height
This is a moderate level of bounce and strikes a nice balance for the benefits of sex, getting in and out of bed, and comfort.
The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
All of that said, bounce is more of a preferential factor. Some sleepers really do enjoy the “dead” bounce feel that some memory foam mattresses provide.
The Amerisleep AS3 isn’t as dead as more traditional memory foam mattresses, but it is closer to that direction.
Edge Support Test
The edge support on the Amerisleep AS3 is a bit of a mixed bag. Sitting edge support leaves much to be desired, but edge support while lying on the mattress was excellent.
In our sitting edge support test, we measured 5.5” of compression. This is notably worse than the average across all mattresses we’ve tested to date of 4.05” of compression.
Max Sinkage
5.5″
Lying Support
Excellent
As you can see from the photographs, when sitting directly on the edge there is significant sinkage bordering on a collapse of support.
When you have a mattress that’s all foam, especially softer foam and convoluted foam (within the core) you’re naturally going to have worse edge support.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.
Sitting, 200 lbs.
The deep edge support sinkage makes the AS3 less than ideal for edge sitting on the activities (getting ready in the morning, watching tv, amorous activities, etc.). While sitting edge support isn’t great, I did find lying edge support to be excellent.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.
Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.
Even when lying directly on the edge I felt well supported by the mattress. There is no feeling of being ejected or rolled off of the mattress. The AS3 remains supportive even when lying right up to the edge of the mattress.
Sex Test
The Amerisleep AS3 has fair sex performance.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Bounce | 65% | 6.7 | Low |
Edge Support | 20% | 6.9 | Mediocre |
Noise | 5% | 10 | Minimal |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 10 | Outstanding |
Cooling | 5% | 9.0 | Excellent |
This score is good, but certainly not the best that we’ve seen. The AS3 has pretty restricted bounce, a lot more restricted than what we saw on the AS3 Hybrid (read review).
A lower level of bounce isn’t great for sex, so it’s a bit of a strike against the AS3 in this case.
Edge support also struggled. Poorer edge support isn’t always the case with 100% foam mattresses, but it tends to be more likely.
Pressure Relief Test
The Amerisleep AS3 has outstanding pressure relief. When considering pressure relief, two of the most important factors include the thickness of the comfort layer and total mattress thickness.
Comfort Layer
6.0″
Support Layer
6.0″
Pressure relief was simply exceptional. Amerisleep’s proprietary memory foam really seems to have something that many other foams are lacking.
It creates an incredible level of softness, while still feeling supportive. The combination of medium firmness, moderate sinkage, and pressure-relieving contour creates one of the best feels in a memory foam mattress we’ve tested to date.
Off-Gassing Test
After we opened the Amerisleep mattress we noted it had a strong smell.
Initial Smell Strength
Strong
Off-Gassing Period
4 days
This is not uncommon for foam-based mattresses. Simply give it a couple of days, or 4 days in the case of Amerisleep, and the off-gassing will be complete and you shouldn’t notice any strong smells.
Company
The company score takes a look at factors that may influence your experience with the mattress.
Factors include length of the trial period, warranty, shipping / return costs, and country of origin.
Company Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Data |
---|---|---|---|
Trial Period | 15% | 8.0 | 100 nights |
Warranty | 10% | 8.0 | 20 years |
Shipping | 5% | 10 | $0 |
Returns | 20% | 10 | $0 |
Trust | 50% | 9.0 | Excellent |
Country of Origin | 0% | USA |
Amerisleep has been around since 2010 and is a very well-established name in the industry. They have good a trial period and shipping / return policies.
The Amerisleep AS3 comes with a 100-night trial period, with the condition of a 30-night “break in period“. In the first 30 days of owning this mattress, Amerisleep asks that you give it a full chance to adjust to your body.
Compared to the average mattress the trial is 43% shorter and the warranty is 6.9 years longer.
If after those first 30 days, you still don’t love the AS3, you can get a full refund. Shipping is free and returns are free.
How firm is the AS3?
The firmness of the AS3 mattress comes in around a 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This is a bit softer than a medium-firm, but still with plenty of support.
Support & Sleeping Positions
The Amerisleep AS3 mattress offers excellent support. The mattress is a medium 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, making it ideal for most body types and sleeping positions.
The table below can be used to see if the AS3 is the right choice for you. Find your weight and sleeping position below:
Sleeper Weight | Stomach Sleepers | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers |
---|---|---|---|
Under 150 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
150-250 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
250-300 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
The mattress creates enough contour and hug for side sleepers, without being excessively deep that it would create significant issues for back and stomach sleepers.
The one exception, and my only real concern, would be for heavier stomach and back sleepers, especially those over 300 pounds.
If you are over 300 pounds and sleep on your back or stomach you may want to consider the Amerisleep AS2 or a different mattress brand.
This is simply because a level 5 firmness combined with deep sinkage and heavyweight can create a situation where you don’t get enough support for back and stomach sleeping.
Back and stomach sleepers don’t want too much sinkage or softness, as it can result in a curved spine while sleeping, which can lead to back pain and other issues.
If you are over 300 pounds I would suggest taking a look at our reviews for the Winkbed Plus, Helix Plus, and Titan mattresses.
Design
The Amerisleep AS3 is a foam-based mattress with three different types of foam for a balanced feel. It is designed to have less bounce than the AS3 Hybrid, but retains a fast response time.
Type
Memory Foam
Thickness
12″
Firmness
5
This mattress is 12″ thick and comes in around a 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale.
Materials
The Amerisleep AS3 is a 12″ memory foam mattress made with modern memory foam. The materials on the AS3 break down into three distinct layers of foam. From top to bottom, the layers are listed below.
- 3.0″ Bio-Pur memory foam
- 3.0″ transitional foam
- 6.0″ support foam
The Cover
The cover on the Amerisleep AS3 foam mattress is their Cooling Refresh Cover. This technology is designed to draw heat from your skin and avoid any instance of heat retention.
According to the manufacturer, on average, the sleeping surface will stay 7° cooler over an eight-hour night of rest compared to a traditional 100% polyester cover.
The Refresh Cover is also aimed at improving daily energy and performance as well. This technology uses embedded minerals to help convert body heat to far infrared energy.
What is far infrared energy?
Science has shown that far infrared energy can increase blood circulation, speed up muscle recovery, and improve overall sleep quality.
The Comfort Layer
The comfort layer is a combination of two different foams. The top foam is a 3.0″ Bio Pur memory foam. This foam is proprietary to Amerisleep and responds a little differently compared to traditional memory foam.
The second layer is a 3.0″ transitional foam. This layer has a higher density than the top foam and is designed to provide more support and pushback as sleepers engage more deeply with the foams.
The Support Layer
The last layer of foam is a 6.0″ support foam base. This layer is designed to support the two foam layers above and provide pressure relief.
Product Evolution
The Amerisleep AS3 mattress has a new name but is basically the same as one of the founding mattress models of Amerisleep’s early days—the Liberty.
The Liberty was introduced as an all-foam mattress, much like the AS3, but in 2017 the Amerisleep lineup was renamed.
For clarity, the Amerisleep models were renamed with associated numbers (ex: AS1, AS2, AS3, AS4, AS5). The higher the number the softer the mattress. The AS1 is the firmest, while the AS5 is the softest.
Other Mattresses to Consider

For Firmer Feel
BedInABox
Luxury Firm – 6 out of 10
The BedInABox is another foam mattress, much like the AS3. Instead of three layers like the AS3 (3″, 3″, 6″), the BedInABox has two layers (3″ + 8″). This gives it an 11″ profile instead of a 12″ profile like the AS3.
For Euro-Style Cover
Loom & Leaf
Luxury Memory Foam
The Loom & Leaf by Saatva has a plusher Euro-style cover that provides a bit more contour than the AS3, with a similar firmness overall. It is available in medium (5.5) or firm (8) firmness levels.
For Better Edge Support
Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid
Same Memory Foam, Better Edges
The AS3 Hybrid has the same top layer of memory foam, but instead of a foam base, it has a pocketed coil base. These coils provide better edge support and a bit more bounce than the foam version.
