Our Verdict

Both Loom & Leaf and the Saatva Classic are manufactured by the parent brand, Saatva. Loom & Leaf is a luxury memory foam mattress, while the Saatva Classic has a more hybrid approach, using two layers of pocketed coils with a small amount of comfort foam at the top of the mattress.

This is fundamentally a choice between memory foam (Loom and Leaf) and coils (Saatva).

The all foam design of Loom and Leaf creates exceptionally good pressure relief, very low motion transfer, and a level of dramatic body contouring hug that non-memory foam mattresses simply cannot recreate.

Meanwhile, the coil-on-coil hybrid design of Saatva Classic creates a more balanced and traditional feel that delivers better cooling, better edge support, and better sex performance.

Both mattresses use excellent materials and have a great build quality. Loom and Leaf is moderately more expensive than Saatva, but both mattresses are still great values.

  4. Response
  5. Bounce
  6. Edge Support

Cooling Test

Cooling is good on both the Loom & Leaf as well as on the Saatva Classic, but best on the Saatva.

Cooling TestScoreBaselineMax TempEnding Temp
Loom & Leaf9.579.1°87.6°-6.8°
Saatva Classic1081.4°94.0°-3.9°
  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (after 5 minutes) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

A lot of this has to do with the nature of the materials, as Saatva has the benefit of two coil layers while the Loom & Leaf uses memory for for the top comfort layers.

Loom & Leaf (2022) corner
Loom & Leaf (2022) corner

Memory foam tends to retain more heat than coils, but they also have distinctly different feels. For a memory foam mattress, the Loom & Leaf has great cooling.

Below, you can watch a video of how the heat dissipates on each mattress during our cooling test. For this test, we lie on the mattress for 15 minutes, get off the mattress, and then take periodic surface-level temperature measurements.

Saatva Classic

Sinkage Test

Looking at sinkage, both Saatva and Loom & Leaf have deeper than average sinkage. The average level of signage across all mattresses tested to date is 2.17″.

Sinkage TestSinkage DepthMax Sinkage
Loom & LeafExtremely Deep3.09″
Saatva ClassicDeep2.40″

Both mattresses have deeper sinkage than average, with Loom & Leaf having the most (3.09″—41% more sinkage than average).

The level of sinkage for each mattress is documented in the images below.

Saatva Classic

Saatva Classic sinkage
Saatva Cassic Sinkage Test

Both the Saatva and Loom & Leaf mattresses have a sufficient level of sinkage to create great pressure relief and contouring, but not so much as to add an increased source of heat, lack of support, or a stuck feeling.

Loom & Leaf (2022) sinkage
Loom & Leaf (2022) sinkage

NOTE: We tested the Saatva Luxury Firm. The Saatva Firm is likely to have a little less sinkage and the Saatva Plush Soft would have a bit more sinkage. By the same token, the Loom & Leaf Firm would likely have less sinkage than the Relaxed Firm (which we tested here).

Motion Transfer Test

Considering motion transfer, the Loom & Leaf mattress has lower levels of motion transfer than the Saatva Classic. But that being said, both mattresses have less motion transfer than average.

Motion Transfer TestScoreAcc. Range
Loom & Leaf105.02 m/s²
Saatva Classic9.85.86 m/s²

The average level of motion transfer across all mattresses tested to date is 8.33 m/s².

The level of motion transfer on each mattress is also documented in the videos below.

Loom & Leaf

Saatva Classic

As you can see above, the levels of motion transfer between Loom & Leaf and Saatva mattress are nearly identical, despite the differences in material.

  • Memory foam is generally good at limiting motion transfer due to the way the material absorbs energy.
  • Pocketed coils are also good at limiting motion transfer. Although each individual coil is springy, they work independently from one another so energy applied to one coil will not necessarily translate across the surface of the entire mattress.
Euro Saatva pillowtop cover

These lower levels of motion transfer on these mattresses mean that two partners in the same bed may be less likely to feel movements from their partners.

Motion Transfer vs. Bounce: Isn’t it the same?

Considering Saatva’s higher levels of bounce, you may think motion transfer would also be high, but that’s kind of the special thing about pocketed coils.

They allow high bounce, but because the coils are pocketed independently (and not linked together like traditional innerspring), they don’t transfer that energy to all of the other coils.

The Saatva’s pocketed coil design along with the euro-style pillow topper work together to greatly reduce motion transfer.

Response Test

The Saatva Classic mattress has a faster material response than Loom & Leaf, although the Loom & Leaf is still decently fast for a memory foam mattress.

Response TestScoreMostly RecoveredCompletely Recovered
Loom & Leaf9.90.6 seconds1.6 seconds
Saatva Classic100.4 seconds0.8 seconds

The Saatva uses coils that promote faster response time since they naturally want to spring back. The foam on the Loom & Leaf is also designed to return to its original position, but it is quite a bit slower.

The level of responsiveness for each mattress is documented in the videos below.

Loom & Leaf

Saatva Classic

Bounce Test

Bounce levels are on opposite ends of the spectrum with these two mattresses. The Loom & Leaf mattress has very low levels and the Saatva Classic has extremely high levels.

Bounce TestBounce HeightBounce Range
Loom & LeafVery Low4.72″
Saatva ClassicExtremely High14.67″

For comparison, the average level of bounce is 9.62″, comparing all mattresses tested to date.

The level of bounce for each mattress is documented in the videos below.

Loom & Leaf

Saatva Classic

When considering bounce, materials have a lot to do with it. Foam mattresses generally have less bounce than pocketed coil or innerspring mattresses.

Such is the case with Loom & Leaf vs. Saatva. The coils in the Saatva provided 2X the bounce than what was experienced on the Loom & Leaf.

When tested with the medicine ball, the ball on the Loom & Leaf sank into the mattress less and when it bounced up, it didn’t even clear the top of the mattress.

The ball on the Saatva, on the other hand, had a much deeper bounce, and when it bounced up, the ball rose over 5″ above the top of the mattress.

This is a significant difference between these two mattresses and greatly impacts ease of movement and sex performance.

Edge Support Test

The Saatva Classic has significantly better edge support than the Loom & Leaf mattress.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding bounce levels.

Edge Support TestScoreMax SinkageLying Support
Loom & Leaf8.46.25″Excellent
Saatva Classic103.00″Exceptional

The average score for edge support is 9.4, with a max sitting sinkage of 4.10″. Saatva has less sinkage than average, but Loom & Leaf had much deeper sinkage than average.

The level of edge support is documented in the images below.

Saatva Classic

Saatva Classic Edge Support

Saatva has a top-to-bottom layer of high-density support foam running along the perimeter of the mattress. This effectively encases the coil layers and dramatically improves edge support.

For this reason, we see good edge support when sitting or lying directly on the edge of the mattress. Saatva without question has better edge support than Loom & Leaf.

Sex Test

Based on our testing, the Saatva Classic would be the better mattress for sex. It has significantly more bounce and better edge support.

Noise, sinkage, and cooling were comparable between the two mattresses. All of these factors contribute to good sex on any mattress.

Saatva mattress quality

The table below shows how sex performance varies between Loom & Leaf and Saatva mattresses.

How Do We Determine Sex Score?

The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.

These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score and from these factors, we can generate a sex score for each mattress.

Pressure Relief Test

Between Loom & Leaf and Saatva Classic, both mattresses have exceptional pressure relief.

Pressure Relief TestScoreComfort LayerSupport Layer

Loom & Leaf (2022) edge support – back sleeping

Both of these mattresses have a thicker profile, a plush Euro-top cover, and high-quality materials. The result is a mattress that contours, supports, and relieves pressure from all parts of your body, regardless of your preferred sleeping position.

Off-Gassing Test

Both of these mattresses have no off-gassing smell when they are delivered.

Off-Gassing TestScoreInitial SmellOff-Gassing Period
Loom & Leaf10None0 days
Saatva Classic10None0 days

For reference, the off-gassing average among all other mattresses tested to date is 5 days.

Both the Loom & Leaf and Saatva Classic off-gas in 0 days. These mattresses are shipped uncompressed meaning that they are never vacuum-rolled.

When mattresses are vacuum-rolled, that is where gasses can become trapped until the mattress is decompressed. This is called off-gassing.

Loom & Leaf handles on the side
Loom & Leaf handles on the side

Just because Loom & Leaf and Saatva are not compressed for shipping doesn’t mean they don’t off-gas. However, any off-gassing that does occur happens during shipping. By the time these mattresses arrive at your home, there should be no significant off-gassing / smell.

Company

Both Loom & Leaf are manufactured by Saatva, the parent company. As a result, they have identical terms and policies.

They both have a one-year trial period, a lifetime warranty, and a $99 return fee if the mattress ends up not working out.

CompanyLoom & LeafSaatva Classic
Trial Period365 nights365 nights

For reference, the average trial length is 163 nights, shorter than both Loom & Leaf as well as Saatva.

Only 25% of the mattresses we’ve tested (over 197+ tested to date) have lifetime warranties. The average of the other 75% is 14 years.

By these metrics, Loom & Leaf and Saatva both have longer warranties than average.

Long warranties tend to be a testament to high-quality mattresses that are backed by an honest company that trusts their product.

Firmness

The Loom & Leaf is available in two firmness levels—medium (5.5) or firm (8). By comparison, the Saatva Classic is available in three firmness levels—soft (4), medium-firm (6), or firm (8).

If you’re looking for a soft feel, the Saatva Classic Soft may be the best bet. But for a medium to firm feel, either mattress offers a firmness that could work.

Support & Sleeping Positions

Both Saatva and Loom & Leaf are offered in a range of firmnesses. As a result, one or more firmnesses can likely be a good fit for the majority of sleepers.

Below we’ve indicated what we think are the right firmness options based on body weight and sleeping position.

Not sure which firmness is right for you?

Use the table below to better determine the firmness range that may be best suited for you, based on your personal weight and preferred sleeping position.

What Firmness Is Right For You2

Plus-Sized Sleepers

For sleepers over 300 lbs., Saatva offers a special mattress called Saatva HD, which is approved for sleepers up to 500 lbs. per side. If you or your partner are heavier, this HD design could make a big difference in overall mattress longevity.

Loom & Leaf (or really any memory foam mattress) is not typically ideal for heavier sleepers as it can lack sufficient support, cause too much sinkage, or cause heat retention issues.

Design

Because both of these mattresses are manufactured by the same company, Saatva, they have a similar design, look, and feel to them on the outside. But the inside couldn’t be more different.

DesignTypeThickness
Loom & LeafMemory Form12.0″
Saatva ClassicCoil-on-Coil11.5″ or 14.5″

Materials

Both mattresses use an organic Euro cotton cover with a plush finish. From here, the Loom & Leaf has an all-foam construction whereas the Saatva uses a blend of foam and pocketed coils to provide comfort and support.

Loom & Leaf

Loom And Leaf Layers
  • Quilted organic cotton cover

  • 2.5″ Memory foam
  • 7.5″ Support foam

Saatva Classic

Saatva Material Layers
  • Quilted organic cotton cover
  • 4″ Foam encased coils
  • 7″ Support coils

The Loom & Leaf is 12″ thick with 4.5″ of comfort foam and 7.5″ of support foam.

The Saatva has a 4″ comfort layer and 7″ of support foam, in addition to a 3″ Euro-style pillowtop. This is for the 11.5″ version.

If you opt for Saatva’s 14.5″ version, it will have an extra 3″ of support coils. There is no additional comfort foam in the thicker mattress.

The main reason why you may opt for the 14.5″ mattress could be if you prefer a taller mattress and don’t want to have to bend down to get in and out of bed.

This may be especially relevant for older individuals or those with limited mobility. There is no significant performance difference with the thicker Saatva mattress, it is purely an aesthetic choice.

Loom & Leaf vs. Saatva Classic: Which Should You Buy?

So bottom line, between Loom & Leaf and the Saatva Classic, which mattress is right for you? Here is a recap of each mattress score as well as quick-pick recommendations for who may be best suited for each.

Should You Buy the Loom & Leaf?

I would recommend the Loom & Leaf if you’re looking for:

  • Memory foam feel: For that true memory foam feel with deep compression, pressure relief, and a slower response time, Loom & Leaf certainly fits the bill and at a fraction of the cost of big-box memory foam options.
  • Good cooling: Despite memory foam’s tendency to sleep hot, Loom & Leaf did not have this problem. The Loom & Leaf is designed with a top gel layer that provides fantastic cooling on the surface of the mattress.
  • Slightly softer than a medium-firm: The Loom & Leaf falls around a 5.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm. If you are specifically looking for something slightly softer than other medium-firms, this could be a great fit for your needs.

The Loom & Leaf mattress is best if you are looking for a modern memory foam mattress. It’s got excellent hug and contour. While it’s not as cool as most coil mattresses, it’s better than more traditional memory foam. It has fantastic pressure relief and build / material quality that’s equally as impressive.

Should You Buy the Saatva Classic?

I would recommend Saatva if you’re looking for:

  • Traditional feel: The coil-on-coil design of the Saatva Classic gives it more of a traditional feel. There is a balanced level of body contouring that doesn’t overly wrap or envelop sleeper bodies.
  • More bounce and fast response time: The pocketed coil design on the Saatva mattress allows for high levels of bounce while retaining low levels of motion transfer. This is an unusual balance, but can be great for sleepers who don’t want to feel “stuck” or don’t want the mattress to hug them.
  • Thickness options: The Saatva comes in an 11.5″ thick version as well as a 14.5″ thick version. If you’re specifically looking for a high-profile mattress, the 14.5″ may be especially appealing. Fewer online mattress options come in that thickness.

The Saatva is best if you’re looking for a slightly more traditional feel with faster response, higher levels of bounce, and good cooling / airflow. It’s unique in that it offers two different thicknesses and three different firmness options.
