Best For
- Lower levels of motion transfer, only 7.77 m/s²
- Great pressure relief, especially for a foam mattress at this price point
- Minimal sinkage
Considerations
- Low bounce is not ideal for sex performance
- Edge support is below average with 5.0″ of sinkage when seated at the edge
- Takes longer to off-gas, 9 days vs. 6-day average
Our Verdict
The Tuft & Needle Mint mattress is an 11.75″ foam mattress made up of four foam layers, a blend of poly foam, memory foam, and support foam.
It has minimal sinkage and low levels of bounce. Some side sleepers may like a little more contour than what the Mint provides, but generally speaking, it has a balanced feel.
The Mint is available in a single firmness, 6 out of 10, which gives the mattress a medium-firm feel.
In our performance tests, the Mint earned an overall score of 8.44, which ranks the mattress in the bottom 34% of all mattresses tested to date.
But at the same time, this mattress is also priced slightly less than the average foam mattress, 7% less than average for a savings of $79 on a queen mattress. As a result, it’s still a solid value.

How is Tuft & Needle Mint Different?
The Tuft & Needle Mint is a foam mattress with below-average overall performance, but also a below-average price tag. This can be an attractive balance for sleepers looking to hit that sub-$1K price tier and aren’t super picky about all performance categories.
Advantages
Specific advantages of the Mint include a below average price, slightly less motion transfer than average, faster material response time, and better pressure relief. This mattress has a 5.0″ comfort layer, 0.9″ thicker than average. For a budget all-foam, the Mint could still be a solid option to consider.
Neutral Factors
Considering neutral factors, this mattress has minimal sinkage and low levels of bounce. These factors are considered neither good nor bad since it’s largely based on preference whether a sleeper will like or dislike the feel.
Neither sinkage nor bounce are so excessive that they fall outside of the normal acceptable range.
Disadvantages
Despite the lower price, there are some performance disadvantages you’ll have to be okay with accepting. The Mint all-foam mattress has below-average cooling performance with a slight level of heat retention.

This mattress also has slightly worse edge support. In our tests, we measured 5.0″ of total sinkage when seated at the edge—a total material collapse of 42% of the total mattress thickness.
Cooling Test
The Tuft & Needle Mint has good cooling. During our tests, I experienced a slight level of heat retention around my body. However, it wasn’t so warm that I would describe it as “hot” or uncomfortable.
Baseline Temp.
75.8° F
Max Temp.
91.1° F
Ending Temp.
78.5° F
The Tuft & Needle Mint is an all-foam mattress and that all-foam design limits breathability. Notably, the mattress does include a cooling cover and the foams are higher quality poly foams, both of which help to limit heat retention and improve breathability.
Max Temp.

Ending Temp

- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
Even so, these material choices were not enough to push the mattress into the excellent or outstanding tiers of cooling performance.
In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 91.1° F. This is 1.4° more than the average of 89.7° F, based on all of our tests to date.
After getting off the mattress the temperature declined by 7.5° from minutes 0 to 1, which is 2.7° cooler than the average 0 to 1 minute decline of 4.8°.
Heat Dissipation Over Time

While that’s fantastic to see, it is somewhat muted given the fact that the max temperature was notably warmer than average.
When we consider the combination of objective data, my subjective experiences, and an analysis of the materials, I’m confident in my view that cooling is good.
Sinkage Test
The Tuft & Needle Mint has minimal sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 1.97″. This is 0.18″ less sinkage than the average sinkage depth of 2.15″, based on all of our tests to date.
Sinkage Depth
1.97″
Sinkage Feel
Minimal
The mattress creates a balanced body contouring hug. It’s neither too much, nor too little. That said, the mattress does create more of a floating feel for lighter parts of my body, especially feet, legs, arms, and head.
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

My butt and midsection sank notably deeper, but still remained within the moderate to deep sinkage depth. Tuft and Needle uses a highly responsive poly foam, which simply doesn’t create a dramatic or exacting hug around the body.
This is in contrast to many types of memory foam, which do create a more significant contouring hug. Neither feeling is better or worse, but they are specific feels.
If you really like the feel of memory foam you should know that Tuft and Needle is not that feeling. It’s more even, balanced, less polarizing, and designed to maximize ease of movement.
Motion Transfer Test
The Tuft & Needle Mint has a low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 7.77 m/s². This is 11% less motion transfer than the average of 8.74 m/s².
Max. Acceleration
3.18 m/s²
Min. Acceleration
-4.59 m/s²
Accel. Range
7.77 m/s²
The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.
The all-foam design and lower-than-average bounce both help to keep motion transfer held to a minimum.
In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.14 seconds.

Motion drops off immediately thereafter and by 0.58 seconds the mattress returns to near-zero energy levels.
Both the motion duration and motion intensity are below average. As a result, overall motion transfer is minimal and I don’t expect it will be an issue for most sleepers.
Response Test
The Tuft & Needle Mint has a very fast mostly recovered response time and a fast fully recovered response time.
Mostly Recovered
0.3 sec.
Complete Recovery
0.8 sec.
In our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.3 seconds, which is 0.12 seconds faster than the average of 0.42 seconds, based on all of our tests to date.
In our fully recovered responsiveness test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.8 seconds, which is 0.16 seconds faster than the average of 0.96 seconds. While these responsiveness speeds aren’t quite instant, they aren’t far from it either.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
The mattress uses highly responsive poly foams within the comfort layer and a firmer, support poly foam foundational layer. Each individual foam layer rebounds back to shape quickly.
In addition, the thin knit cover that sits immediately atop the highly responsive poly foams means that your body is more in direct contact with foams that are going to maximize ease of movement and prevent any type of a stuck feeling.
Bounce Test
The Tuft & Needle Mint has a low level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 7.37″. This is 2.02″ less bounce than the average of 9.39″, based on all of our tests to date.
Max. Depth
5.04″
Max. Rebound

Total Bounce

Max. Sinkage Depth

Max Bounce Height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
Ultimately, this is an all-foam mattress. The all-foam design greatly reduces energy, which means there is simply less bounce on the mattress.
Fortunately, the poly foams are still highly responsive and sinkage is minimal, so ease of movement is still good. Even so, the lower bounce does mean sex performance is notably below average.
Edge Support Test
The Tuft & Needle Mint has fair sitting edge support and excellent lying edge support.
Max Sinkage
5.00″
Lying Support
Excellent
In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 5.00″. This is 0.94″ more sitting sinkage than the average of 4.06″, based on all of our tests to date.
While sitting directly on the edge there was more sinkage than I expected and more sinkage than is ideal. Fortunately, the edge doesn’t completely collapse. It still supports body weights, but it may not be as robust as some may prefer, especially when it comes to amorous activities.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

While sitting edge support left something to be desired, lying edge support was better. While lying directly on the edge of the mattress, I felt that the support was excellent in all sleeping positions.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

The mattress doesn’t have to have any type of reinforced edge support foam. Certainly, this fact is limiting the sitting edge sinkage performance.
Even so, the mattress does notably better when weight is more evenly distributed, as it is while lying near the edge.
Sex Test
The Tuft & Needle Mint has a fair sex performance. On the positive side, noise is minimal, pressure relief is excellent, and cooling is good. However, both edge support and bounce leave something to be desired.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Bounce | 65% | 7.1 | Moderate |
Edge Support | 20% | 7.5 | Fair |
Noise | 5% | 10 | Minimal |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 9.0 | Excellent |
Cooling | 5% | 8.0 | Good |
Sitting edge sinkage measured at 5.00”, which is notably more than the average. An edge that isn’t as supportive reduces the sexable surface area of the mattress. With respect to bounce, it too was notably lower than average.

Less bounce means sex is more strenuous, as this all-foam mattress just doesn’t work with couples the same way that a coil or hybrid mattress will. Overall, sex performance is fair, but it also isn’t great.
Pressure Relief Test
The Tuft & Needle Mint has an excellent level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt no significant pressure points on my body. The mattress is equipped with 5.0″ of comfort material, which is 0.85″ more comfort material than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.15″, based on all of our tests to date.
Comfort Layer
5.0″
Support Layer
6.75″
The mattress uses highly responsive poly foams that create a balanced level of hug, minimal sinkage, and good overall comfort. The foams look and feel high quality.
In our pressure mapping tests, we measured a max PSI of 1.41 on the back, 1.08 on the side, and 0.77 on the stomach. A PSI of 2.0 is a high pressure point and all of our measurements were far less than that.
The back sleeper’s PSI of 1.41 isn’t as low as we’d ideally like to see it, but it’s also nothing I’m overly concerned by.
When I consider our objective pressure mapping tests, material thickness, material quality, and my subjective experience on the mattress, I’m confident most sleepers will find the pressure relief to be excellent.
Pressure Map – Side Sleepers

Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
---|---|---|
Side Sleepers | 0.19 | 1.08 |
Pressure Map – Back Sleepers

Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
---|---|---|
Back Sleepers | 0.12 | 1.41 |
Pressure Map – Stomach Sleepers

Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |

Stomach Sleepers | 0.10 | 0.77 |
Off-Gassing Test
The Tuft & Needle Mint had a strong smell upon the initial unboxing. The mattress smelled for 9 days.
Initial Smell Strength
Strong
Off-Gassing Period

This is 2.6 days more than the average of 6.4 days. During the 9 days of smell it had an odor similar to wet paint.

How firm is Tuft & Needle Mint?
The Tuft & Needle Mint mattress has a medium-firm firmness and is a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm.

Support & Sleeping Positions
Support on the Tuft & Needle Mint is excellent. During our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions.
The mattress is equipped with a 6.75″ support layer. This is 1.12″ thinner than the average support layer thickness of 7.87″, based on all of our tests to date. Despite this fact, the mattress still created ample support.

Certainly, the thicker-than-average 5.0” comfort layer is helping. More comfort material, especially in this configuration, quality, and foam type, helps to create better pressure relief and transitional support.
Check out the table below to see the sleeper weights and sleeping positions that would be best suited for this mattress.
Sleeper Weight | Stomach Sleepers | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers |
---|---|---|---|
Under 150 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
150-250 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
250-300 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
When we consider these factors alongside the minimal sinkage depth, it’s easy to see why the mattress feels fully supportive. The Tuft & Needle Mint is available in a single firmness, medium-firm, which is appropriate to the needs of most sleepers.
Based on all of my tests to date, an analysis of the materials, and my subjective experiences, I’m confident most sleepers will find support on the Tuft & Needle Mint is excellent.

The Cover
The Tuft & Needle cover is thin and stretchy, with cooling properties for less heat retention.

As mentioned above, the earlier version of the Mint mattress featured a removable cover. The present-day cover also has a zipper however, this cover is not intended to be removed for any reason.
The Comfort Layer
Beneath the thin cover are three layers of comfort foam. On top, we see a 2” poly foam (green), followed by a 1″ memory foam (white). The last layer is a 2″ poly foam (blue).

Each of these layers have a different feel and are designed to provide comfort and transitional support.
The Support Layer
At the base, we see a 6.75″ support foam (likely intended to be 7.0″ thick by the manufacturer, but ours was a bit shy of that mark).

This foam is convoluted, which helps increase breathability and comfort.
Product Evolution
The Tuft & Needle Mint was first introduced in 2022 and has undergone minimal changes since its initial release. The biggest change was made to the cover. Originally, the cover was designed to be removed and washed.
Today, there is still a zipper on the cover, but the cover is not intended to be removed and the manufacturer recommends spot-cleaning and accidents or spills.
