  • 3 different firmness options

Considerations

  • Higher 13.5″ profile height
  • $49 fee for an exchange, returns are free
  • More expensive than the average hybrid

Our Verdict

The WinkBed mattress is a hybrid that is available in three different firmnesses—soft, medium-firm, and slightly firm. With a 13.5″ profile, the Winkbed Original provides exceptional pressure relief and support for sleepers of all sleeping positions, or body weight.

The Winkbed is tied as the top-performing mattress to date, with over 140 mattresses tested. The Memorial Day savings further increases the value of this mattress, making it a solid mattress to snag during the holiday sale.

Saatva Classic

Saatva Classic mattress
9.95 Overall Score
Tested With Scoring System 1.1
10 Cooling
9.8 Motion Transfer
10 Response Time
10 Edge Support
9.9 Sex
10 Pressure Relief
10 Off-Gassing
9.8 Company

Best For

  • Options—3 firmness levels and 2 mattress height options
  • Fast response time with coil-on-coil design
  • Fantastic cooling performance

Considerations

  • High levels of bounce with 14.67″ in our tests
  • Primarily coils construction compared to hybrid or foam mattresses

Our Verdict

The Saatva Classic mattress is available in three firmness levels (soft, medium, and firm) as well as two thicknesses (11.5″ or 14.5″). The coil-on-coil design provides excellent cooling and breathability, while retaining a moderate level of sinkage and contour.

Motion transfer levels are low and edge support is excellent. Overall, the Saatva is a luxury mattress for sleepers looking for that balanced feel and high-quality materials. It is tied with Winkbed as the best scoring mattress we’ve tested to date.

Type: Coil-on-Coil

Amerisleep AS3

Amerisleep AS3 Foam cover photo
9.64 Overall Score
Tested With Scoring System 1.1
9.5 Cooling
10 Motion Transfer
10 Response Time
8.8 Edge Support
9.3 Sex
10 Pressure Relief
9.7 Off-Gassing
9.8 Company

Best For

  • Extremely low level of motion transfer
  • Fantastic pressure relief
  • Memory foam contouring hug, with great cooling (hybrid variant is best)

Considerations

  • Sitting edge support leaves something to be desired
  • Fast response at 0.5 seconds, but not the absolute fastest on the market

Our Verdict

The Amerisleep AS3 is available as an all-foam mattress or a hybrid. In our performance tests, the Hybrid scored 9.77, and the foam AS3 scored 9.64.

Comparing the two, the AS3 hybrid had better edge support, slightly deeper sinkage, slightly more motion transfer, and higher levels of bounce. It also has a higher price tag than the foam AS3.

While the foam AS3 does struggle a bit with edge support, all of the other categories are exceptional.

Type: Memory Foam (or hybrid)
Firmness: Medium (5)

Bear Star Hybrid

Bear Star Hybrid 2023 Cover Photo
9.66 Overall Score
Tested With Scoring System 1.1
9.5 Cooling
9.2 Motion Transfer
10 Response Time
10 Edge Support
9.7 Sex
9.5 Pressure Relief
9.6 Off-Gassing
9.8 Company

Best For

  • Fast “mostly recovered” response time—0.3 seconds
  • Exceptional edge support
  • Side sleepers looking for deeper sinkage and more contour

Considerations

  • Slower “complete” material response time—1.8 seconds
  • Low motion transfer, but not as low as what we saw on the Bear Elite hybrid

Our Verdict

The Bear Star Hybrid, formerly named the Bear Hybrid, is designed as a budget-friendly alternative to the luxury Bear Elite Hybrid. And to that aim, the Bear Star really hits it out of the park.

This mattress scores just slightly lower than the Bear Elite (9.72 overall, but saves sleepers about $200 on a queen-size mattress.

In our performance tests, the Star Hybrid excels in almost all categories with good cooling, fast response, excellent edge support, and good pressure relief. Motion transfer was a little higher than expected, but that is largely a by-product of the redesigned quilted cover the Star mattress received in early 2023.

GhostBed Classic

GhostBed Classic cover photo
9.53 Overall Score
Tested With Scoring System 1.1
9.0 Cooling
10 Motion Transfer
10 Response Time
9.3 Edge Support
9.5 Sex
9.5 Pressure Relief
9.8 Off-Gassing
9.8 Company

Best For

  • Low levels of motion transfer
  • Moderate levels of total bounce (8.08″), slightly less bounce than average (9.56″)
  • Budgets under $1000

Considerations

  • Higher levels of heat retention compared to others (especially hybrids)
  • Dense support foams may not be ideal for petite sleepers (110 pounds or less)

Our Verdict

The GhostBed Classic mattress is an 11” high foam mattress that uses a combination of latex foam, gel memory foam, and support foam. It is designed to have a balanced feel and it is a good pick for a well-rounded mattress that would appeal to a wide range of sleeper needs / preferences.

In our performance tests, the mattress has extremely low motion transfer, fast response time, and good pressure relief.

Cooling and edge support are both pretty good, but not as good as the GhostBed Flex—a hybrid design that combines foam and coils. Still, the GhostBed Classic provides a fantastic value, especially on sale for Memorial Day.

Nolah Evolution 15

Nolah Evolution 15 cover photo
9.77 Overall Score

10 Cooling
8.5 Motion Transfer
10 Response Time
9.9 Edge Support
9.8 Sex
10 Pressure Relief
9.8 Off-Gassing
9.5 Company

Best For

  • Exceptional cooling
  • Excellent edge support, only 3.25″ when sitting at the edge
  • Deep sinkage and contour, great for side sleepers

Considerations

  • Higher levels of motion transfer—11.10 m/s² compared to the average of 7.97 m/s²
  • 15″ profile may be too high for personal preference

Our Verdict

The Nolah Evolution 15 is a high-profile hybrid with a quilted euro top cover, poly foam comfort layer, and pocketed coil support system. This mattress is 15″ thick, which is one of the thickest mattresses we’ve tested to date. In our tests, this extra thickness helped provide exceptional pressure relief and edge support.

The cooling was also exceptionally good. The thicker comfort layer does provide a deep level of sinkage but also retains a fast material response time. Overall, this is a balanced mattress that provides a great value. And the value is even better if you can take advantage of a Memorial Day sale.

9.5 Cooling
10 Motion Transfer
10 Response Time
9.5 Edge Support
9.4 Sex
10 Pressure Relief
9.8 Off-Gassing
9.8 Company

Best For

  • Excellent pressure relief
  • Low levels of motion transfer with a thicker 14″ profile
  • Good edge support

Considerations

  • Priced 46% higher than the average hybrid
  • Faster response time could mean less contour for some sleepers

Our Verdict

The Helix Midnight Luxe mattress has a 14” thick profile, 2” thicker than the standard Helix mattresses. This extra thickness contributes to lower levels of motion transfer, better pressure relief, and moderate levels of sinkage.

In our performance tests, the Midnight Luxe scored in the top 7% of all mattresses tested to date.

For comparison, the standard Helix Midnight scored in the top 66% of all mattresses tested to date. The Helix Midnight Elite, the top-level Helix scored in the top 4% of all mattresses.

The Luxe collection provides a great balance of performance and value…especially when you can take advantage of additional Memorial Day savings.

10 Edge Support
10 Sex
9.5 Pressure Relief
9.8 Off-Gassing
9.5 Company

Best For

  • Budgets under $1000
  • Good cooling with coil and foam materials
  • Excellent edge support

Considerations

  • Only 2.5″ comfort layer may not be suitable for sleepers over 250 lbs.
  • High bounce (9.99″ total)

Our Verdict

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature mattress is an 11” hybrid mattress with widespread appeal, a balanced feel, and is affordably priced at only $999 for a queen. This mattress strikes the balance of performance and price, making it a strong choice for sleepers looking for a budget hybrid.

In our performance tests, the Signature Hybrid had good cooling, very fast response, exceptional edge support, and great pressure relief.

Motion transfer is the only area where it struggled, measuring 10.23 m/s² max acceleration range. For comparison, the average level is 7.97 m/s².

Zoma Hybrid

9.59 Overall Score

9.5 Cooling
10 Motion Transfer
9.3 Response Time
9.1 Edge Support
9.6 Sex
10 Pressure Relief
9.6 Off-Gassing
9.8 Company

Best For

  • Pressure relief is truly exceptional. Even lightweight joints and body parts and gentled cradled and relaxed.
  • Excellent support while lying directly on the edge

Considerations

  • Response time is well below average at 1.2 seconds, fairly slow, especially for a hybrid
  • Edge support while sitting is good, but not great.

Our Verdict

The Zoma Hybrid mattress has a 12” thickness and is made up of gel memory foam poly foam, and pocketed coils. It has a medium feel which is slightly softer than many of the medium-firm mattresses featured in this list.

During our performance tests, the Zoma measured low levels of motion transfer, excellent pressure relief, good cooling, slightly deep sinkage, and moderately high levels of bounce.

Edge support is good, but not the best we’ve seen from hybrids, and the response time is a touch slow as well. But if those factors aren’t hugely critical for you then the Zoma is a solid option for a hybrid on a budget.
