Best For

  • Modern memory foam feel—minimal sinkage and high bounce
  • Long trial and warranty
  • Fast material response time

Considerations

  • Not ideal for side sleepers for lightweight side sleepers
  • High levels of motion transfer, 46% more than the average
  • Limited heat retention

Our Verdict

The Lull Original Premium is a 12″ mattress with a quilted cover, gel memory foam, transitional poly foam, and a support foam base.

It has very minimal levels of sinkage and high levels of bounce, both of which are quite unusual for memory foam. If you’re looking for dramatic contour and hug, this mattress is not it. It has a far more restrained level of body contouring hug and limited sinkage.

The Original Premium comes in a single firmness (7 out of 10) and has a slightly firm feel.

Overall performance comes in at 9.30, which is below average (9.49), comparing all mattresses tested to date. That said, the price is also slightly below average looking exclusively at memory foam mattresses.

How is Lull Original Premium Different?

The Lull Original Premium has lower-than-average performance and a price that is also below average—3% less than the average memory foam mattress (a savings of about $30).

Advantages

Advantages of the Lull Original Premium include fast material response time, good sex performance, a thicker 5.0″ comfort layer, and a long trial and warranty.

The average mattress trial is 166 nights, but Lull gives you a full year to decide if you like the mattress as well as a lifetime warranty if you decide to keep it.

Neutral Factors

This mattress has 22% less sinkage than average as well as 17% more bounce than average. Both of these factors are neutral (not really good or bad), but more an issue of personal preference.

Disadvantages

Disadvantages for Lull include lower cooling performance than average, high levels of motion transfer, and a level of edge support that is just barely at the average.

If you want really great edge support, you’re going to want to see less sitting sinkage than what the Lull Original Premium is capable of.

Cooling Test

The Lull Original Premium has a good level of cooling performance, albeit not an amazing one. During our tests, I only felt a slight level of heat retention around my body.

The mattress does a good job of keeping heat to a reasonable level. That said, this is an all foam mattress. Compared to most hybrid and coil based mattresses it’s going to sleep warmer. The Lull Original Premium uses gel-infused cooling beads, which definitely helps, but that’s the only notable cooling feature of the mattress.

  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

During our objective temperature testing, we measured a max surface level temperature of 91.5° F, which is 1.94° warmer than average.

After getting off the mattress the temperature declined by 5.9° from minutes 0 to 1, which is 1.30° cooler than average. From minutes 0 to 5 the temperature declined by 9.8°, which is 2.62° cooler than average.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

For many sleepers who would describe themselves as a hot or warm sleeper, I would advise going with the Lull Luxe Hybrid or another hybrid, as the cooling performance is going to be a notable step up.

Sinkage Test

The Lull Original Premium has a very minimal level of sinkage. During our pressure point sinkage tests, we measured a sinkage depth of 1.68”. This is 0.48” less sinkage than the average of 2.16”.

Sinkage Depth

1.68″

Sinkage Feel

Very Minimal

The mattress creates more of a floating feeling for sleepers, as opposed to letting the sleeper’s body sink down “in” the mattress.

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Lull Original Premium Sinkage Test
Lull Original Premium Sinkage Test

Even though it’s memory foam, which normally means a more dramatic body-contouring hug, we don’t see that here.

This is neither good nor bad, but those who prefer a significant body contouring hug that memory foam is known for will likely be disappointed.

Sleepers who prefer a more restrained type of body contouring hug that doesn’t overly envelop will enjoy this feel.

8.1

Motion Transfer Test

The Lull Original Premium has a high level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured an acceleration range of 12.60 m/s². This is 46.9% more motion transfer than the average of 8.58 m/s², based on all of our tests to date.

Max. Acceleration

5.35 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-7.25 m/s²

Accel. Range

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

In looking at our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we see the highest motion spike from 0 to 0.14 seconds. In addition, we have a secondary spike from 0.49 to 0.63 seconds.

Thereafter motion is lower, but it’s not until 1.27 seconds that we reach near zero levels. Neither the motion spikes nor motion duration are ideal.

Lull Original Premium Motion Transfer Chart

Mattresses with the lowest motion are able to disperse all energy within 0.3 seconds. Needless to say, we don’t see that here. As a result, those who are more sensitive to motion may find the Lull Original Premium just isn’t low enough.

10

Response Test

The Lull Original Premium has an extremely fast material response. In our tests, we measured a mostly recovered response time of 0.2 seconds and a fully recovered response time of 0.3 seconds.

Mostly Recovered

0.2 sec.

Complete Recovery

0.3 sec.

The Lull is 0.21 (mostly recovered) and 0.57 (fully recovered) seconds faster than average to recover back to shape.

At these speeds, the Original Premium is tied with many other mattresses as the fastest we’ve tested to date. This is effectively an instant material response.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

I was very surprised at just how fast the mattress responds given that it contains memory foam. Typically, memory foam is notably slower to respond back to its original shape.

The fast response ensures you’ll never feel stuck and the mattress is easier to move around on.

Bounce Test

The Lull Original Premium has a high level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce range of 11.30”. This is 1.68” more bounce than the average of 9.62”.

Max. Depth

4.60″

Max. Rebound

6.70″

Total Bounce

11.30″

As with response time and motion transfer, I was greatly surprised at the level of bounce. Typically, memory foam mattresses have a lower level of bounce, but we aren’t seeing that here.

Max. Sinkage Depth

Despite the inclusion of the memory foam, this mattress feels far more like other highly responsive poly foams we’ve tested.

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

It has high bounce, more motion, a less dramatic body contour, and an instant material response.

These attributes are typically associated with latex, latex-like, and high-response poly foams, not memory foam.

At 11.30” of bounce we have plenty of bounce to aid in ease of movement and sex, however, the higher bounce is a part of why we’re seeing higher motion transfer.

9.5

Edge Support Test

The Lull Original Premium has excellent edge support for both sitting and lying. In our sitting edge support tests, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 4.0”. This is 0.09” less sitting sinkage than the average of 4.09”.

Max Sinkage

4.00″

Lying Support

Excellent

Ideally, I want to see 4.0” or less and the Lull hit that mark. Even when sitting directly on the edge I felt well supported by the mattress.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Lying edge support is equally as impressive. While lying on the edge of the mattress I felt well supported in all sleeping positions.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

Notably, the mattress doesn’t include any type of edge support foam. However, given the material quality, 12” total profile, and slightly firm feel, it really doesn’t need it.

The mattress created plenty of support even at the absolute edge without explicit edge support foam. I expect most sleepers will find this level of edge support to be sufficient.

9.8

Sex Test

The Lull Original Premium has an excellent sex performance. Despite the all-foam design and memory foam comfort layer, the mattress creates a high level of bounce.

Bounce is by far the most critical factor for good sex performance. In addition, edge support is excellent as well, which maximizes the sexable surface area of the mattress.

While the Original Premium won’t reach the exceptional levels of higher-end hybrid mattresses, for an all foam mattress it does far more right than it does wrong.

How Do We Determine Sex Score?

The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.

These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce60%10High
Edge Support20%9.5Excellent
Noise10%10Minimal
Pressure Relief5%9.0Very Good
Cooling5%9.0Very Good

For the Lull Original Premium, these individual factors generated a sex score of 9.8.

9.0

Pressure Relief Test

The Lull Original Premium has good, but not amazing pressure relief. During our tests, I felt good pressure relief overall. However, there was a feeling of excessive pushback in my shoulders and lower back.

Comfort Layer

5.0″

Support Layer

7.0″

Whereas other mattresses may create more comfort, sinkage, and contour, the Lull Original Premium has less of these attributes.

A part of this pressure relief dynamic is merely the slightly firm feel. As a result, there are absolutely some sleepers (most likely back and stomach sleepers, but especially those who weigh more) that will enjoy this mattress feel more.

Looking at the material layers, I’m pleased with what I see. We have 5.0” of comfort material, which is notably thicker than the 4.2” average comfort layer thickness, based on all of our tests to date.

In addition, the foams look and feel high quality. While pressure relief isn’t the absolute best we’ve tested, given the price it isn’t bad by any stretch.

9.5

Off-Gassing Test

Off-gassing on the Lull Original Premium was strong right out of the box and took 6 days to fully off-gas.

Initial Smell Strength

Strong

Off-Gassing Period

6 days

This is 1 day longer than the 5-day average off-gassing period, but not near the longest off-gassing period we’ve seen. For most sleepers, this is not expected to be a critical factor.

10

Company

Lull has an exceptional company score (10 out of 10) with a long 365-night trial period and lifetime warranty. The Lull Original and Lull Original Premium are currently manufactured in variuos factories within the United States, while the Lull Hybrid mattress is manufactured in Spain.

How Do We Determine Company Score?

The company score takes a look at factors that may influence your experience with the mattress.

Factors include length of the trial period, warranty, shipping / return costs, and country of origin.

How firm is Lull Original Premium?

The Lull Original Premium has a firmness of 7 out of 10 with a slightly firm feel.

Support & Sleeping Positions

The Lull Original Premium has excellent support. During our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions.

The mattress has a slightly firm feel, which is better suited to the needs of stomach and back sleepers. However, side sleepers, especially those over 200 pounds may find it suitable as well, provided you prefer a little more firmness.

Lull Original Premium Measuring Materials
Lull Original Premium Measuring Materials

Looking at the material layers, we have a 12.0” total profile (1.0″ quilted cover now shown in image above) with 7.0” of support foam.

The 7.0” support layer is a little less than the average 7.8” support layer, based on all of our tests to date, but still thick enough to provide ample support. Especially when you consider the 5.0” comfort layer. Overall, I’m pleased with the level of support, as well as the occupying pressure relief dynamic.
