  • Sleepers looking for limited contour and high bounce
  • Excellent edge support for both sitting and lying

Considerations

  • Only 3.0″ of comfort material may not provide sufficient pressure relief for all sleepers

Our Verdict

The Lull Original mattress is a 10″ foam mattress made of memory foam, transitional poly foam, and a high-density support foam.

It has very minimal sinkage and high levels of bounce, a nice mix for stomach and back sleepers. This would not be an ideal feel for side sleepers.

The mattress comes in a single firmness with a slightly firm feel, rating 7.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm.

Lull Original has a below-average overall performance, scoring in the bottom 10% of all mattresses tested to date. However, it’s price point is also notably lower than average.

A queen-sized Lull Original costs $779, which is $319 less than the average foam mattress ($1,098 average). If you’re on a tight budget and looking for a slightly firm feel, especially as a back or stomach sleeper, this could be a good option.

How is Lull Original Different?

The Lull Original has lower overall performance than average, but with a price point that is also below average—29% less than the average hybrid for a savings of $319 (for a queen mattress).

Advantages

Advantages of the Lull Original include a faster-than-average material response time, better edge support, and better sex performance. It also has the advantage of a long trial and warranty period.

Neutral Factors

This mattress has 32% less sinkage than average and also 32% more bounce than average. Both bounce and sinkage are considered preferential factors, but you’ll want to make sure you prefer only slight contour and a bouncy feel before opting for the Lull Original.

Disadvantages

Disadvantages to the Lull Original include less than great cooling performance, higher levels of motion transfer, and less comfort material than average (likely to result in pressure relief issues for some sleepers).

Cooling Test

The Lull Original has a good, but not amazing level of cooling performance. In our tests, I felt a slight to moderate level of heat retention around my body. Ultimately, this is a fairly basic all-foam mattress.

Baseline Temp.

74.3° F

Max Temp.

90.5° F

Ending Temp.

79.4° F

There are no significant cooling materials or design features that would improve cooling performance. All foam mattresses by their very nature are more prone to heat retention, especially relative to coil and hybrid-based mattresses.

  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

In our objective temperature testing, we measured a max surface level temperature of 90.5° F, which is 0.93° warmer than average.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Lull Original Heat Dissipation Chart

While the cooling performance isn’t incredible, it’s exactly what I expect from an all-foam mattress at this price point. Given the inexpensive price point, it’s hard to complain too much about this level of cooling performance.

Sinkage Test

The Lull Original has a very minimal level of sinkage. In our pressure point sinkage tests, we measured a sinkage depth of 1.47”. This is 0.69” less sinkage than the average of 2.16”.

Sinkage Depth

1.47″

Sinkage Feel

Very Minimal

The mattress creates a significant “floating” on the mattress feel, as opposed to sinking down “in” the mattress. The floating feeling, combined with the slightly firm feel, creates a minimal level of body contouring hug.

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Lull Original Sinkage Test
Lull Original Sinkage Test

There is a significant level of pushback in the mattress at large. Those who want a mattress with lots of hug and contour will be disappointed with the Lull, while those who like mattresses with a more restrained hug, a floating feeling, and a high degree of pushback will enjoy the feel.

The sinkage dynamic is certainly one that is better suited to the needs of back and stomach sleepers and isn’t ideal for most side sleepers.

8.4

Motion Transfer Test

The Lull Original has a high level of motion transfer. In our motion transfer tests, we measured an acceleration range of 11.31 m/s². This is 31.5% more motion than the average of 8.60 m/s².

Max. Acceleration

5.66 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-5.65 m/s²

Accel. Range

11.31 m/s²

Generally, all foam mattresses have less motion transfer. However, the Lull Original’s very minimal level of sinkage, slightly firm feel, and very high bounce are all working together to create the high level of motion transfer.

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we see the highest motion from 0 to 0.14 seconds.

In addition, there is a sizable secondary motion spike from 0.49 to 0.64 seconds and by 1.06 seconds we return to near zero levels of motion. Neither the motion duration nor the motion spikes are ideal.

Lull Original Motion Transfer Chart

Ultimately, this mattress has a high level of motion and those who are sensitive to movements during the night may find it’s simply too high.

10

Response Test

The Lull Original has an extremely fast material response. In our tests, we measured a mostly recovered response time of 0.2 seconds and a fully recovered response time of 0.3 seconds.

Mostly Recovered

0.2 sec.

Complete Recovery

0.3 sec.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

Both of these are tied for the fastest material response we’ve tested to date. Lull’s responsiveness is essentially instant. The fast response ensures you’ll never feel stuck on the mattress, while also keeping the mattress easy to move around on.

Bounce Test

The Lull Original has a very high level of bounce. In our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 12.82”. This is 3.18” more bounce than the average of 9.64”.

Max. Depth

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

Lull’s 12.82” of bounce is certainly more than I consider ideal. At this height, it is absolutely having a negative impact on motion transfer.

However, the high bounce is also greatly beneficial for sex performance. As a result, there are pros and cons to bounce, and depending on your needs you may find it to be a great benefit or a great negative.

9.8

Edge Support Test

The Lull Original has excellent edge support for both sitting and lying. In our sitting edge support tests, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 3.50”. This is 0.59” less sitting sinkage than the average of 4.09”.

Max Sinkage

3.50″

Lying Support

Excellent

In my view, any sitting compression of 4.0” or less is ideal and the Lull Original easily exceeded that benchmark. Even when sitting directly on the edge of the mattress I felt well supported and there was no sensation of material collapse.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Lying edge support is equally as impressive. I felt well supported in all sleeping positions even when lying directly on the edge of the mattress. Despite the lack of any explicit edge support foam, the mattress still creates great edge support.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

The mattress has a slightly firm feel and a very minimal level of sinkage, these attributes extend to the edge of the mattress and are a major factor in the strong edge support performance.

9.8

Sex Test

The Lull Original has excellent sex performance. While the high bounce is a major negative for motion transfer, it is a tremendous benefit for sex.

In addition, Lull’s excellent sitting and lying edge support expands the sexable surface area of the mattress, giving sex partners a supportive surface.

Cooling and pressure relief leave something to be desired, but they should be good enough that most won’t find them problematic for sex.

How Do We Determine Sex Score?

The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.

These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce60%10Very High
Edge Support20%9.8Excellent
Noise10%10Minimal
Pressure Relief5%8.5Good
Cooling5%9.0Very Good

For the Lull Original, these individual factors generated a sex score of 9.8.

8.5

Pressure Relief Test

Pressure relief on the Lull Original is good, but far from great. In our tests, I felt a slight to moderate level of pressure points build along my back and shoulders. A part of this pressure relief dynamic is certainly the slightly firm to firm feel.

Comfort Layer

3.0″

Support Layer

7.0″

This level of firmness is typically better suited to the needs of heavier-weighted back and stomach sleepers or those who otherwise prefer this exact firmness. Many side sleepers will find it simply doesn’t provide enough pressure relief or sinkage to be comfortable.

The mattress is built with 3.0” of comfort foam. These foams look and feel reasonably high quality. However, we only have 3.0” of comfort foam, which is notably less than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.2”, based on all of our tests to date.

Lull Original Back Sleeping
Lull Original Back Sleeping

The limited comfort layer thickness is also negatively impacting pressure relief. Given the price point, it’s hard to complain too much about pressure relief, as the mattress is quite affordable.

Even so, for most sleepers to feel comfortable and an adequate level of pressure relief they will need to prefer the very specific minimal sinkage level, minimal contour, and slightly firm feel that the Lull Original creates.

8.9

Off-Gassing Test

Off-gassing on the Lull Original is strong right out of the box and took a full 14 days to dissipate.

Initial Smell Strength

Strong

Off-Gassing Period

14 days

Compared to the average off-gassing period of 5 days, the Lull takes nearly 3 times as long. That being said, once the off-gassing is complete, it should be a non-issue for most sleepers.

10

Company

Lull has an exceptional company score (10 out of 10) with a long 365-night trial period and lifetime warranty.

The Lull Original and Lull Original Premium are currently manufactured in various factories within the United States, while the Lull Hybrid mattresses (including Lull Luxe Hybrid) are manufactured in Spain.

How Do We Determine Company Score?

The company score takes a look at factors that may influence your experience with the mattress.

Factors include length of the trial period, warranty, shipping / return costs, and country of origin.

Company FactorFactor WeightScoreData

For Lull, these individual terms and conditions generated a company score of 10.

How firm is Lull Original?

The Lull Original has a firmness rating of 7.5 out of 10 and a slightly firm feel.

firmness - 7.5 out of 10 - medium firm

This is not exactly a widley preferred firmness, and many sleepers (especially side sleepers) may find this mattress to be too firm to provide sufficient pressure relief and comfort.

Support & Sleeping Positions

The Lull Original has excellent support. During our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions.

The mattress uses a 7.0” support foam layer, which is slightly less thick than the average 7.8” support layer, based on all of our tests to date. Even so, there is ample support, especially given the slightly firm feel.

My only concern is just how firm the mattress is. It creates a high degree of pushback with minimal sinkage and minimal body contouring hug.

For heavier-weighted back and stomach sleepers, this type of support dynamic is great. However, for side sleepers, as well as many lightweight and moderate-weighted bodies, this feel is not ideal.

To feel well supported by the Lull you will almost certainly want to be a back and stomach sleeper.

Design

The Lull Original is a 10″ foam mattress with a slightly firm feel. It is best suited for back or stomach sleepers as the firmer feel provides less contour and pressure relief (something critically important for side sleepers).

The Cover

The Lull Original includes a stretch, knit cover on the top of the mattress. It is thin and breathable with a hexagonal stitching pattern.

The sides of the mattress are reinforced with a slightly thicker fabric (gray) with a contrasting black band separating the two areas.

The Comfort Layer

The primary comfort layer for the Lull Original is a 1.5″ gel memory foam followed by a 1.5″ poly foam. The poly foam is partly for comfort, but also partly as a transitional layer between the memory foam and support foams below.

Lull Original Pressing Top Layer

Transitional layers are important as they help sleepers ease into support layers below and aim to avoid pressure points.

That being said, this mattress still struggles with pressure relief issues as the comfort layer is only 3.0″ thick.

The Support Layer

The support layer of the mattress is broken up into two different 3.5″ thick support foams. These foams are located at the bottom of the mattress and provide support and stability to the sleeper.

Product Evolution

The Lull Original mattress was first released in 2015. There is a limited recorded history record of changes made to the Lull Original since its initial release. Since 2022, the last documented record we could find, there have been no notable changes made to the mattress.

Lull Original vs. Lull Original Premium

The Lull Original is a simpler version of the Lull Original Premium. It has a thinner profile (only 10″ thick), a thinner comfort layer, and a lower overall score.

For back or stomach sleepers, the Lull Original may be a solid pick, but side sleepers would do far better with the Lull Original Premium.

The Nest Bedding Quail is another 10″ foam mattress. Compared to the Lull Original, the Quail has much deeper sinkage and less bounce. This mattress is available in two firmness levels, medium (5), or lux firm (8) and would be a better choice for side sleepers. The lack of memory foam and the inclusion of convoluted foam also give the Quail better cooling than the Lull Original.
