Best For

  • Edge-to-edge coils for reinforced edge support
  • Available in two firmness levels
  • Great support and pressure relief

Considerations

  • Very high bounce
  • Only 3.0″ of comfort material, may not be great for heavier sleepers
  • More motion transfer than average

Our Verdict

The Shuteye Whisper mattress is a 12″H hybrid mattress with a 3″ poly foam comfort layer and an 8″ support layer of pocketed coils.

During our performance tests, this mattress had excellent cooling, pressure relief, and edge support. It also had an extremely fast response time with moderate sinkage. With fast response also came extremely high bounce and higher motion transfer.

The Shuteye Whisper is a well rounded hybrid mattress with an above average performance.

Performance Tests

At NapLab, we put each mattress to the test.

We test 10 different factors that impact the performance, comfort, and value of the mattress. Testing categories include:

Cooling Test

The Shuteye Whisper has excellent cooling performance. In our tests, I felt no significant level of heat retention around my body.

Baseline Temp.

79.8° F

Max Temp.

87.8° F

Ending Temp.

82.6° F

The hybrid design has plenty of airflow and seems to breathe well, keeping the sleeper cooler.

Max Temp.

Ending Temp

Shuteye Whisper after cooling test
Shuteye Whisper after cooling test
  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

With only 3.0” of comfort materials, it’s not ideal for pressure relief (which we’ll discuss further down), but it is advantageous for cooling. Having less foam within the mattress means it’s able to absorb and retain less heat.

The Shuteye Whisper has a pretty typical hybrid design, but one we’ve seen work well for cooling over the years.

If we look at our objective data, we can see that the Whisper has a max temperature of 87.8°. This is 1.7° F cooler than the average max temp based on all of our tests to date.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Shuteye Whisper heat dissipation chart
Shuteye Whisper heat dissipation chart

The heat dissipation curve was fine, but far from amazing. However, I’m more inclined to look past the limited heat dissipation performance due to the notably cooler starting max temperature.

Since the Shuteye Whisper started at a lower max temp compared to the average it also had less heat to dissipate, hence the below-average heat dissipation performance.

Overall, I’m pleased with the level of cooling performance on the Shuteye mattress.

Sinkage Test

The Shuteye Whisper mattress has a moderate level of sinkage. In our tests, we measured 2.06” of pressure point sinkage depth. This is slightly below the average pressure point sinkage depth of 2.25”.

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Shuteye Whisper sinakge test
Shuteye Whisper sinkage test

Bear in mind, we tested the firm version. Firm mattresses tend to have less sinkage compared to medium and softer mattresses.

As a result, I expect the luxury firm (aka medium) mattress would have a deeper level of sinkage. At least with respect to the firm version, it has a very restrained type of hugging contour around the body.

The firm version creates more of a floating “on top” of the mattress as opposed to lying “in” the mattress. This type of a feel is pretty typical of many firm mattresses.

Overall, I found that the Whisper mattress has a very traditional feel. Yes, technically it is a hybrid mattress, but it reminds me of a more typical spring mattress.

This is neither good nor bad, it’s more a matter of preference for the feel. You really feel the more classic spring feel with lots of bounce and a very restrained foam comfort layer.

9.0

Motion Transfer Test

The Shuteye Whisper mattress has a low to moderate level of motion transfer, however, it’s still more than the average.

The level of motion transfer is documented in the video below.

In our tests, we measured 9.08 m/s² of acceleration range. This is 2.10 m/s² more motion than the average motion transfer of 6.98 m/s² (based on all of our tests to date).

Max. Acceleration

4.33 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-4.75 m/s²

Accel. Range

9.08 m/s²

If we look at our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest levels of motion from 0.00 to 0.21 seconds. A moderate level of motion persists until 1.48 seconds, before returning to near zero levels.

Shuteye Whisper heat motion transfer chart
Shuteye Whisper heat motion transfer chart

While the motion intensity is relatively restrained, the motion duration is quite a bit longer than what we typically see. Mattresses with the lowest motion transfer are able to dissipate energy within 0.3 seconds, while more average performers manage it in 0.7 to 1.0 seconds.

For a mattress to still have any measurable level of motion beyond 1.0 seconds isn’t great. Granted, it’s a very low-intensity motion, but it’s still something.

10

Response Test

The Shuteye Whisper has an extremely fast response time. In our tests, we measured a mostly recovered response time of 0.4 seconds and a fully recovered response time of 0.9 seconds.

This is slightly faster than the average for both categories.

Mostly Recovered

0.4 sec.

Complete Recovery

0.9 sec.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

Based on all of our tests to date, we have measured an average mostly recovered response time of 0.49 seconds and an average fully recovered response time of 0.93 seconds.

Industry-wide, faster-responding mattresses are becoming the norm. A slower responding mattress makes it more difficult to move around on, get in / out of bed, and generally decreases sex performance.

While some portions of the Whisper mattress materials take a bit longer to recover, in general, this is still a fast-responding mattress. I don’t expect the response time will be a significant issue for many sleepers.

Bounce Test

The Shuteye Whisper mattress has an extremely high bounce. In our tests, we measured 15.60” of total bounce height.

Max. Depth

6.22″

Max. Rebound

9.38″

Total Bounce

15.60″

This is significantly more bounce than the average. Based on all of our tests to date, we have measured an average bounce height of 9.63”.

The Whisper mattress has the 4th most bounce of any mattress we’ve tested to date.

Max. Sinkage Depth

Max Bounce Height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

The relatively thin 3.0” comfort layer and pocketed coil base work together to create a huge bounce. A thicker foam comfort layer would decrease bounce. There are pros and cons to high bounce.

A higher level of bounce makes it easier to move around on and improves sex, but also increases motion transfer (which we discussed above).

Shuteye Whisper sinakge

Beyond that, many sleepers may simply dislike the near trampoline type feel of the Shuteye. The level of bounce is far more similar to a more traditional coil or innerspring mattress.

9.5

Edge Support Test

The Shuteye Whisper mattress has excellent edge support for both sitting and lying. I felt well supported even when sitting directly on the edge of the mattress.

In our sitting edge support tests, I measured 4.0” of sitting edge sinkage. This is 0.55” less sinkage than the average of 4.55”.

Max Sinkage

4.00″

Lying Support

Excellent

In general, I like to see 4.0” of sitting edge sinkage or less. As a result, the Whisper mattress is in a good spot. When sitting directly on the edge of the mattress I found it comfortable and the materials didn’t collapse.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

As a reminder, we tested the firm version of the Whisper mattress. As a result, it most likely has better edge support than the luxury firm, as is the case with most firm mattresses.

Lying edge support was equally as impressive. I felt well supported in all sleeping positions.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

If we look at our edge support test visuals you can see the mattress does a great job of supporting the entire body even when lying directly on the edge of the mattress.

9.9

Sex Test

To score sex performance we look at a number of different factors that all play a role in quality sex. Factors include bounce, edge support, noise, pressure relief, and cooling.

All factors are not equal in terms of significance, but bounce, edge support, and noise are the 3 most important.

Here’s a look at our complete sex formula which outlines where each factor falls.

sex formula

We use the following scores, plugged into the formula, to derive a sex score for each mattress.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScore
Bounce60%10
Edge Support20%9.5
Noise10%10
Pressure Relief5%9.5
Cooling5%9.5

For the Shuteye Whisper, these individual factors generated a sex score of 9.9.

This is a fantastic score. This mattress has a super high level of bounce and pretty good edge support.

Shuteye Whisper edge support – sitting

These two factors alone make up 80% of the sex score, so it’s no surprise that the performance score is as good as it is.

9.5

Pressure Relief Test

The Shuteye Whisper has excellent pressure relief. During our tests, I did not feel any significant level of pressure point buildup. This is rare for a firm mattress.

Comfort Layer

4.0″

Support Layer

9.0″

Since it’s the firm version it’s definitely far more restrained, but it still has a good level of pressure relief for a firm mattress.

Shuteye Whisper

Many firm mattresses are just so hard they really struggle to relieve pressure.

I would expect the luxury firm version of the mattress will have a similar or slightly better pressure relief dynamic.

Overall, I’m happy with the level and type of pressure relief. I don’t expect it will be a major issue for most sleepers.

9.8

Off-Gassing Test

Out of the box, the Whisper mattress had a moderate smell. The odor lingered around for 2 days before fully dissipating. This is a little faster than average.

How firm is the Shuteye Whisper?

The Whisper mattress comes in two firmness levels—luxury firm and firm. We tested the firm model which was a 7.5 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm.

firmness - 7.5 out of 10 - medium firm

While we haven’t tested the luxury firm version, I would suspect it is around a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

firmness - 6 out of 10 - medium

Support & Sleeping Positions

The Shuteye Whisper has excellent support. In all of our tests, I felt well supported by the mattress in all sleeping positions. The mattress has a robust and proven material design.

Shuteye Whisper edge support - back sleeping with vest
Shuteye Whisper edge support – back sleeping with vest

In my view, it should be supportive up to 300 pounds per side. The firm version of the mattress will provide slightly increased support over the luxury firm version (due to the extra pushback). Overall, I don’t have any major complaints to support.

Luxury Firm

150-250 lbs.YesYesYes
250-300 lbs.YesYesYes

The luxury firm version would be a solid pick for all sleeper profiles, up to 300 lbs. It has a nice balance between supportive firmness and comfortable softness.

The firm version will provide more pushback, which can be beneficial to heavier sleepers. But this extra pushback may be too much for lightweight sleepers, especially side sleepers.

Design

The design of the Shuteye Whisper mattress includes layers of foam and pocketed coils as well.

Materials

In total, there are five layers on the Shuteye Whisper mattress. From top to bottom, the layers include the following:

  • 1.0″ quilted cover
  • 1.0″ poly foam
  • 1.0″ poly foam
  • 8.0″ support coils
  • 1.0″ support foam

The Cover

The Whisper mattress has a 1″ quilted euro cover with a 1.5 lb fire-retardant fiber and polymer blend makeup.

It has a tufted finish and dark navy cording around the perimeter of the mattress.

The Comfort Layer

The comfort layer is made up of three separate 1.0″ layers of poly foam. Each layer is CertiPur certified, with a density of 1.5 lb.

The Support Layer

Past the comfort layer, we get into the support layer of the mattress. The main support is an 8.0″ layer of pocketed coils. There are hundreds of individual coils and each coil is separately encased in a thin fabric which limits noise and motion transfer, while also improving pressure relief.

Shuteye Whisper measuring materials

Along the outer edges (long sides only), there are two rows of thicker steel, which also use a lower gauge coil. This improves the edge support and prevents foam breakdown.

The base layer is a 1″ slab of high-density support foam, with an ILD rating of 28.

What is ILD? In the mattress world, ILD stands for Indentation Load Deflection. It is a numerical value that assesses the overall firmness of the foam. An ILD of 10 would be pretty soft, for example, and an ILD of 40 would be quite firm.

Product Evolution

The Shuteye sleep app was first developed in 2021 with the Whisper mattress following shortly after. Being that it’s a newer product, there have been no major changes to the design of the mattress since its launch.

How is the Whisper Mattress Different?

There is nothing significant that separates the Whisper from other high performance hybrid mattresses. It uses poly foam and 8.0″ pocketed coils.

It does come in two firmnesses and the edge-to-edge coils are a nice benefit for reinforced edges.

The Whisper uses a proven design we’ve seen used on other hybrid mattresses. It may not be unique, but it is effective.

Other Mattresses to Consider

Not sure if the Shuteye Whisper mattress is the right mattress for you? Consider three top-rated hybrid malternatives listed below for other options.

For Budget

Helix Midnight

Similar Materials, Half the Cost

The Helix Midnight is another top-performing hybrid with 3.0″ of comfort material and 8.0″ pocketed coil support. Despite the similarities, the Midnight mattress is nearly 50% the cost of the Shuteye mattress. The only real thing you sacrifice is better edge support on the Whisper.

For Luxury

Bear Elite Hybrid material layers

Bear Elite Hybrid

Available in 3 Firmnesses

The Bear Elite hybrid mattress has a thicker 14″ profile, compared to 12″ on the Whisper, with a 5.0″ comfort layer. This provides excellent pressure relief and fantastic overall performance as well—9.72 overall score.
