Updated

4/16/2025 Update – Helix has re-designed their entire mattress line, including the Moonlight Luxe. The new line launched on 4/1 and our tests and photos below are based on the newest Helix Moonlight Luxe version.

Best For

  • Exceptional edge support when sitting or lying
  • Great cooling performance with or without the optional cooling cover
  • Minimal sinkage, best for back or stomach sleepers

Considerations

  • Low bounce isn’t doing any favors for sex performance
  • Price is 31% more than the average hybrid mattress
  • “Floating feel” will not be attractive to all sleepers

Our Verdict

The Helix Moonlight Luxe mattress is a 13.5″ hybrid mattress with a quilted cover, poly foam comfort layer, and pocketed coil base. This mattress comes standard with a Tencel cover, but you can also upgrade to a GlacioTex cooling cover for $199.

The Helix Moonlight Luxe is available in a single firmness level. According to Helix, the mattress has a soft feel, but we found this mattress to be considerably firmer than expected, 7 out of 10 on our firmness scale (slightly firm). In some sleeping positions, that firmness dips to a 6 out of 10 (medium-firm feel), but even with 3 different testers no one from NapLab thought it came anywhere close to a soft feel.

This mattress has minimal sinkage and low levels of bounce. This gives the mattress a bit of a “floating feel” that may not be appealing to all sleepers.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 9.08, ranking the mattress in the top 17% of all mattresses tested to date.

The Helix Moonlight Luxe is $1,899 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 31% more expensive than the average hybrid mattress. But given the higher performance, the Moonlight Luxe provides a high-quality hybrid option worth considering.

How is Helix Moonlight Luxe Different?

The Helix Moonlight Luxe is a 13.5″ hybrid mattress with an overall performance level that is well above the average and a price tag that is also above average. The Moonlight Luxe costs sleepers an extra 30% more than the average hybrid, which adds up to a difference of $449 on a queen-sized mattress.

Helix Moonlight Luxe Sitting
Helix Moonlight Luxe Sitting

Advantages

Advantages of the Moonlight Luxe hybrid include better cooling performance and lower levels of motion transfer, 13.2% better than average. The material response time is also faster than average, 0.2 seconds for the material to be mostly recovered.

Neutral Factors

This mattress has minimal sinkage and low levels of bounce. This mattress may have a “floating feel” to some sleepers and isn’t going to deliver that classic, “soft mattress sinkage” you may be looking for. This is neither a good nor bad thing but is important to consider when thinking about your ideal mattress.

Disadvantages

There are only two disadvantages to the Moonlight Luxe that popped up in our tests—a shorter trial period and a higher price tag.

Helix mattresses only have a 100-night trial compared to the 176-night average trial period, comparing all mattresses tested to date. The higher-than-average price tag may also be a disadvantage for sleepers on a tight budget.

9.0

Cooling Test

The Helix Moonlight Luxe has excellent cooling. During our tests, I did not feel any significant level of heat retention around my body. The mattress breathed well and the surface temperature was kept to reasonable levels.

Baseline Temp.

78.4° F

Max. Temp.

90.2° F

Ending Temp.

80.2° F

The Moonlight Luxe uses a proven hybrid design incorporating high-performance poly foam layers and a pocketed coil unit.

The pocketed coil unit helps to bring in airflow, while the high-quality foam layers do well at resisting heat retention.

In addition, the mattress creates more of a floating feel with less sinkage. This comfort dynamic helps to improve cooling as there is simply less foam material wrapping around the body.

  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

The mattress is available with an optional cooling cover. Notably, our mattress did not include the cooling cover. We’ve tested other Helix Luxe models with the cooling cover, including the Helix Midnight Luxe.

On those tests, we’ve experienced a notable improvement in cooling performance compared to the non-cooling cover. As such, we would expect an improvement in cooling on the Moonlight Luxe if you add the cooling cover.

In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 90.2° F. This is 0.4° more than the average of 89.8° F, based on all of our tests to date.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Helix Moonlight Luxe Heat Disspation Chart

When we consider the combination of objective data, my subjective experiences, and an analysis of the materials, I’m confident in my view that cooling is excellent.

Sinkage Test

The Helix Moonlight Luxe has minimal sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 1.93″. This is 0.24″ less sinkage than the average sinkage depth of 2.17″, based on all of our tests to date.

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Helix Moonlight Luxe Sinkage Test
Helix Moonlight Luxe Sinkage Test

The mattress creates a bit of a mixed feel with a balanced feel while lying on my side, but a notable floating sensation while lying on my back or stomach.

Mattresses can create a floating feel when the body lies more “on” the mattress as opposed to sinking down “in” the mattress. This mattress has a surprising level of pushback.

I say surprising because Helix is rating this as part of their “soft” mattress feel. In my view, this mattress just isn’t soft. It has minimal sinkage, more of a floating comfort dynamic, and firmness that feels between medium-firm and slightly firm.

This feel dynamic is neither good nor bad, but it is a very specific feel. One you’ll need to like to be comfortable on the mattress.

For a soft mattress feel from Helix go with the Helix Sunset Luxe.

8.9

Motion Transfer Test

The Helix Moonlight Luxe has a low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 7.55 m/s². This is 13% less motion transfer than the average of 8.69 m/s².

Max. Acceleration

2.75 m/s²

Like all Helix Luxe mattresses, the Moonlight Luxe is equipped with a thicker-than-average comfort layer and a high-density poly foam in the core of the mattress.

That foam is 1.0” thick and has a 3.5 PCF. Extra dense foams help to absorb and disperse energy, thereby reducing motion, and that’s exactly what we measured with the Moonlight Luxe.

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.15 seconds. Motion drops off thereafter and by 1.01 seconds we return to near-zero levels of energy.

Helix Moonlight Luxe Motion Transfer Chart

While the motion duration goes on for longer than average, the motion intensity is notably below average. As such, I don’t expect motion transfer will be an issue for most sleepers.

9.4

Response Test

The Helix Moonlight Luxe is a mixed bag for material responsiveness, with an extremely fast mostly recovered response time and a moderate fully recovered response time.

Mostly Recovered

0.2 sec.

Fully Recovered

1.0 sec.

In our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.2 seconds, which is 0.23 seconds faster than the average of 0.43 seconds, based on all of our tests to date.

In our fully recovered responsiveness test, we measured a recovery speed of 1.0 seconds, which is 0.01 seconds slower than the average of 0.99 seconds.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

Responsiveness speeds at this level aren’t quite instant, but they are going to be more than fast enough for most sleepers. The Moonlight Luxe benefits from the minimal sinkage depth and limited 1.0” high-density poly foam within the core.

Many other Helix Luxe mattresses we’ve tested with more sinkage and more memory foam have had considerably slower material responsiveness. The faster response ensures ease of movement is quick and you’ll never feel stuck in the mattress.

Bounce Test

The Helix Moonlight Luxe has a low level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 7.83″. This is 1.38″ less bounce than the average of 9.21″, based on all of our tests to date.

Max. Depth

4.81″

Max. Rebound

3.02″

Total Bounce

7.83″

The combination of minimal sinkage alongside a high-density (3.5 PCF) poly foam within the core of the mattress are the primary factors that reduce bounce.

That lower bounce is fantastic for helping to create lower motion transfer. However, lower bounce also has a significant negative impact on sex performance.

Max. Sinkage Depth

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

In an ideal world, I want to see a bounce closer to 10”. Suffice it to say, we’re well off that mark, and as a result, sex performance isn’t able to rise to the highest levels.

10

Edge Support Test

The Helix Moonlight Luxe has outstanding sitting edge support and outstanding lying edge support. In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 2.50″.

This is 1.51″ less sitting sinkage than the average of 4.01″, based on all of our tests to date. The sitting edge support feels incredibly robust and solid.

Lying Support

Outstanding

Edge support while lying is equally as impressive. While lying directly on the edge of the mattress, I felt that the support was outstanding in all sleeping positions.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

In addition, the minimal sinkage, high-quality materials, total 13.5” height, and medium-firm to slightly firm feel also contribute to the fantastic edge support.

Overall, I’m exceedingly pleased with edge support performance and expect most sleepers will find it more than sufficient.

8.2

Sex Test

The Helix Moonlight Luxe has good sex performance. On the positive side, noise is minimal and we have excellent pressure relief and cooling. Edge support is especially impressive.

Helix Moonlight Luxe Edge Support Sitting
Helix Moonlight Luxe Edge Support Sitting

With just 2.50” of sitting edge sinkage the edge is incredibly robust, which extends the sexable surface area of the mattress and makes it a functional space for even the most particular couples.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce65%7.4Moderate
Edge Support20%10Outstanding
Noise5%10Minimal
Pressure Relief5%9.0Excellent
Cooling5%9.0Excellent

The one performance area that isn’t so great is bounce. At just 7.83” bounce is well below average. That lower bounce makes amorous activities less engaging, more strenuous, and more difficult.

Even so, it’s not terrible by any stretch. When combined with stellar performance in other areas the total sex performance score is still going to be good enough for most sleepers.

9.0

Pressure Relief Test

The Helix Moonlight Luxe has an excellent level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt no significant pressure points on my body.

The mattress is equipped with 4.75″ of comfort material, which is 0.55″ more comfort material than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.20″, based on all of our tests to date.

Comfort Layer

4.75″

Support Layer

8.75″

The foam quality is fantastic, including 1.5 to 1.8 PCF foams in the euro top and a 3.5 PCF foam layer at the core of the mattress.

That super dense poly foam creates fantastic contour and hug and is a major factor in the strong pressure relief performance.

Helix Moonlight Luxe Back Sleeping
Helix Moonlight Luxe Back Sleeping

All that said, the Moonlight Luxe has a comfort dynamic that won’t be loved by everyone. We have minimal sinkage and a medium-firm to slightly firm feel.

These factors, combined with the floating feeling on the back and stomach, especially for lighter and more moderate-weighted sleepers, create a more polarizing feel.

That’s neither good nor bad, but it is a specific feel, one that you’ll need to be comfortable with to enjoy the comfort dynamic of the mattress.

In our pressure mapping tests, we measured a max PSI of 0.81, which is well below the high PSI benchmark of 2.0 that we want to avoid.

When I consider our objective pressure maps, material thickness, material quality, and my subjective experience on the mattress, I’m confident most sleepers will find the pressure relief to be excellent.

Company

Helix has an excellent company score with consumer-friendly terms and conditions. The mattress includes a 100-night trial period and a lifetime warranty. Shipping and returns are both free.

Helix has been around since 2015 and based on my experiences with them and feedback from my readers over the years they are a brand that I have a high degree of trust with.

All Helix mattresses are made in the US.

How firm is Helix Moonlight Luxe?

The firmness of the Helix Moonlight Luxe was unexpectedly firmer than anticipated. According to Helix, the Moonlight has a soft feel so I expected it to be around a 4 out of 10 on the firmness scale. But this is not what we experienced during our tests.

During our tests, we rated the Helix Moonlight Luxe at a 7 out of 10 on our firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm. This gives the mattress a slightly firm feel.

Firmness Chart 7

Notably, it does feel a little softer while lying on my side. But even so, it’s still a medium-firm (6 out of 10) on the side. On the back and stomach, it’s a solid 7, and one of our testers (Samantha) felt that it was as firm as a 7.5.

Another tester (Nathan) felt that it was more of a 6, but also contended that it too did feel slightly firmer while on the back and stomach.

Notably, none of our testers felt that the mattress was anywhere close to a soft feel. For a soft feel from Helix, check out the Helix Sunset Luxe.

Support & Sleeping Positions

Support on the Helix Moonlight Luxe is excellent. During our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions.

The mattress is equipped with an 8.75″ support layer. This is 0.83″ thicker than the average support layer thickness of 7.92″, based on all of our tests to date.

Helix Moonlight Luxe Sinkage Demonstration
Helix Moonlight Luxe Sinkage Demonstration

In addition to having a thicker-than-average support layer, the mattress also has a thicker-than-average comfort layer.

For a mattress to create ideal support, we need to keep the spine in neutral alignment, while also providing ample pressure relief and comfort.

The Moonlight Luxe has the necessary materials and design to achieve both of those requirements.

Check out the table below to see the sleeper weights and sleeping positions that would be best suited for this mattress.

Sleeper WeightStomach SleeperSide SleeperBack Sleeper
Under 150 lbs.YesNoYes
150-250 lbs.YesMaybeYes
250-300 lbs.YesYesYes

All that said, the support dynamic on this mattress is a bit unique. First and foremost, Helix has labeled this as a soft mattress. However, based on our tests on the mattress (including an assessment from 3 different testers at NapLab to verify the findings), this is not a soft mattress.

It is a medium-firm to slightly firm feel. This mattress feels more similar to the firm feeling Helix Twilight Luxe and Dawn Luxe (go with Helix Sunset Luxe if you want a soft feel).

Helix Moonlight Luxe Cover Pattern
Helix Moonlight Luxe Cover Pattern

In addition, it creates minimal sinkage and more of a floating feel, which are amplified for lighter and moderate-weighted sleepers. These “feel” attributes aren’t good or bad, but they are specific.

You’ll need to make sure you prefer that medium-firm to slightly firm feel, minimal sinkage, and floating feel in order to feel well supported by the mattress. Lastly, the mattress is equipped with a zoned pocketed coil unit.

Zoned support coils create more support in the middle, which helps to keep the spine in alignment and avoid sagging in the middle. Based on all of my tests to date, an analysis of the materials, and my subjective experiences, I’m confident most sleepers will find support on the Helix Moonlight Luxe is excellent.

The Cover

The Helix Moonlight Luxe has a standard Tencel cover with a quilted design. In total, it is 1.75″ thick and contains 1.0” of gel memory foam quilted in the cover.

This gives the mattress a plush look, but overall, it’s not really providing the deep contour some sleepers may expect from a mattress with a quilted cover. It still retains minimal sinkage and a bit of a floating feel, especially on the back or side.

Helix Moonlight Luxe Cover Feel
Helix Moonlight Luxe Cover Feel

Sleepers also have the option to upgrade to the GlacioTex cooling cover. The cooling cover contains cooling fibers that help regulate body temperature when you’re lying on the mattress. Regardless of mattress size, upgrading to the cooling cover costs $199.

The Moonlight Luxe mattress we tested did not have the GlacioTex cooling cover or the graphite cooling ribbons (aka: CoolForce), designed to pull heat away from the body. These ribbons are only available if you also upgrade to the GlacioTex cooling cover, which we discussed above.

The addition of the cooling cover and cooling ribbons would add an additional $299 to the total mattress cost.

For reference, similar Luxe mattresses (like the Helix Midnight Luxe) which did have the GlacioTex cooling cover earned a cooling performance score of 10/10 compared to the 9/10 score we documented on the Moonlight Luxe.

The Comfort Layer

The comfort layer is 4.75″ thick and contains the quilted cover followed by three foam layers. On top, we see a 1.0” poly foam (gray foam) with a rating of 3.5 PCF, which is the highest-quality foam used within the comfort layer.

This foam is designed for comfort and durability. Beneath the top layer are two additional layers of poly foam (blue foams), each 1.0″ thick. These two layers provide transitional support to help ease sleepers into the coil layer below.

Helix Moonlight Luxe Measuring Comfort Layer

Helix also offers an optional support layer that you can add, the ErgoAlign support layer. This layer is designed to support spinal alignment, especially along the midsection.

Helix Ergo Align Support Layer
Helix Ergo Align Support Layer

This layer sits directly below the cover and is designed as a supportive foam that helps to reinforce support along the mid-section, thereby allowing less sinkage in the middle of the mattress.

I will say, this layer is quite firm and will not be right for all sleepers. We’ve already heard from some of our readers / viewers who purchased this optional foam upgrade that it made their mattress way too firm, creating an uncomfortable support dynamic.

However, if you really struggle with discomfort caused by too much sinkage in the middle of your mattress then adding this layer can help.

This optional layer costs an additional $199 and is available in the Core, Luxe. On the mattresses within the Elite collection, this layer comes standard.

The Support Layer

The support layer is 8.75″ thick and made of an 8.0″ zoned pocketed coil base. Each of these coils is designed to move independently of each other, with targeted zones that place stronger coils in areas where there is stronger pressure (ie: midsection).

Product Evolution

Helix as a brand launched in 2015 with a handful of mattresses that sleepers selected based on the results of an on-site quiz. In 2020, the brand shifted from custom mattresses into a series of collections, starting with the Core collection and Luxe collection. In 2023, the Elite collection was added as well, providing a total of 3 tiered collections.

In 2024, Helix added the option of ErgoAlign support foam and in 2025 Helix added the optional graphite cooling ribbons. These two features can help customize and improve any mattress, regardless of what collection it falls under.

For example, you can add the cooling ribbons and ErgoAlign foam to the Helix Moonlight (core collection), the Luxe version, or the Elite version.

In addition, in 2025 Helix redesigned their entire lineup. Here are the major changes from the redesign:

  • Aesthetic changes on the covers
  • Improved cooling cover (optional on Core and Luxe models, comes standard with all Elite models)
  • Slightly different layer stack for foams
  • Different / new / updated foams, most notably a new 3.5-4.0 PCF foam that’s included on all Luxe models
