Cooling Test

The Diamond Tailor Classic Hybrid has excellent cooling performance. During our tests, I felt no significant level of heat retention around my body. The mattress breathed well and the sleeping surface remained comfortably cool.

Baseline Temp.

79.5° F

Max Temp.

88.1° F

Ending Temp.

80.8° F

The mattress is built of layers of mostly copper-infused poly foam and a support layer of pocketed coils. Copper foam helps to better reduce heat retention, while the pocketed coils create better airflow and breathability for the foam layers.

Max Temp.

Ending Temp

  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

Looking at our objective data, we measured a maximum surface level temperature of 88.1°, this is 1.5° F cooler than the average (based on all of our tests to date).

Heat dissipation was equally as impressive. From minutes 0 to 1 we recorded a temperature decline of 4.0° (dropping from 88.1 to 84.1). This is slightly better than the average 0 to 1-minute decline of 3.8.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Time ElapsedTemperature
1 minute84.1°
2 minutes82.9°
3 minutes81.6°
4 minutes81.3°
5 minutes80.8°

The temperature continued to gradually decline over the 5-minute period, dropping to 80.8°. That’s a total temperature reduction of 7.3° F. The average temperature reduction is 6.4° (based on all of our tests to date).

Looking at the complete picture of subjective experience, objective data, and material design, I am confident in my assessment that the Diamond Tailor will sleep cool for most sleepers.

Sinkage Test

The Diamond Tailor mattress has a very deep level of sinkage. In our tests, we measured a total sinkage depth of 2.70”. This is 0.46” more sinkage than the average sinkage of 2.24” (based on all of our tests to date).

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Diamond Tailor Classic Hybrid sinkage test
Diamond Tailor Classic Hybrid sinkage test

While the total sinkage depth is deeper it still has a more restrained and balanced feel.

The Tailor mattress uses a 2.0” quilted cover of cotton and poly fiber batting.

Those materials create a far more traditional feel, especially when you compare it to lying directly on a more typical memory or poly foam layer that uses a thin cover (as opposed to a quilted cover).

Even so, sleepers will need to prefer a deeper level of sinkage to feel comfortable on the Diamond Tailor mattress.

8.1

Motion Transfer Test

The Diamond Tailor mattress has a high level of motion transfer. In our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 12.53 m/s². This is 6.03 m/s² more motion transfer than the average of 6.50 m/s² (based on all of our tests to date).

The level of motion transfer is documented in the video below.

While the quilted cover and layers of foam help to reduce some motion, ultimately, the coil support layer still creates a high level of motion.

Max. Acceleration

5.95 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-6.58 m/s²

Accel. Range

12.53 m/s²

Looking at our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we see the highest levels of motion from 0.00 to 0.15 seconds.

Diamond Tailor Classic Hybrid motion transfer chart
Diamond Tailor Classic Hybrid motion transfer chart

From 0.15 to 0.64 seconds there is a massive drop in energy. It’s not zero, but it will be low enough that most sleepers will not find it disturbing. By 0.64 seconds motion returns to near zero levels.

The mattresses with the lowest motion transfer are able to fully disperse energy within 0.3 seconds. The Tailor isn’t quite to that level, but it’s better than many others.

While I am less than thrilled by the motion peaks, the total motion duration and the level of energy following the initial spike is quite low.

While sleepers who are more sensitive to motion during the night may find the mattress unacceptable, for many sleepers, this level of motion is acceptably restrained enough to not be problematic.

10

Response Test

The Diamond Tailor mattress has an extremely fast level of response time. In our tests, we measured a mostly recovered response time of 0.3 seconds and a fully recovered response time of 0.7 seconds.

Mostly Recovered

0.3 sec.

Complete Recovery

0.7 sec.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

Both of these measurements are moderately faster than the average. Based on all of our testing data to date, we have recorded an average mostly recovered response time of 0.52 seconds and an average fully recovered response time of 0.96 seconds.

The very fastest responsive mattresses rebound back to shape in 0.2 (mostly recovered) and 0.3 (fully recovered) seconds. In any case, the Tailor isn’t quite to that level, but it’s still more than fast enough for most sleepers. I do not expect the response time to be an issue for most sleepers.

Bounce Test

The Diamond Tailor has a moderate level of bounce. In our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 8.45”. This is 0.85” less bounce than the average of 9.30”.

Max. Depth

5.75″

Max. Rebound

2.70″

Total Bounce

8.45″

I typically like to see 8-12” of total bounce height on a mattress. It’s enough to enable the benefits of bounce (ease of movement, response, and sex), while minimizing the major detractors (motion transfer, trampoline feel).

Max. Sinkage Depth

Diamond Tailor Classic Hybrid max bounce depth

Max Bounce Height

Diamond Tailor Classic Hybrid max bounce height

The level of bounce is documented in the video below.

The Tailor’s thick 2.0” quilted cover of poly fiber and cotton absorbs much of the energy and therefore reduces bounce.

Suffice to say, the Tailor has a fairly restrained level of bounce, but it’s still within the sweet spot that I look for. In my view, most sleepers will find the level of bounce to be sufficiently high enough to be comfortable.

9.4

Edge Support Test

Edge support on the Diamond Tailor Classic is good, but not great. In our sitting edge support tests, we measured a sitting sinkage depth of 4.25”. This is 0.35” less sinkage than the average of 4.60” (based on all of our tests to date).

Max Sinkage

4.25″

Lying Support

Good

When it comes to edge support, less is better. Typically, I want to see 4.0” or less.

The Diamond Tailor isn’t far from the mark, but it’s not quite there. Even so, it should be good enough for most to feel comfortable for sitting and amorous activities.

Lying edge support was similar. It’s good, but far from great.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

While lying directly on the edge of the mattress I simply did not feel well supported. The Tailor’s 2.0” quilted layer is quite soft. In addition, the top cover has a design that tapers downward at the edge.

This results in the mattress creating less than ideal edge support while lying. When lying on my back directly on the edge of the mattress I felt the worst support.

This is because the portion of my back closer to the absolute edge is notably lower than the portion of my back closer to the middle of the mattress. When lying on my side at the edge support feels better.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

All that said, I wouldn’t go as far as to say the edge support is bad. However, it does leave something to be desired and many sleepers may find it lacking.

9.6

Sex Test

To score sex performance we look at a number of different factors that all play a role in quality sex. Three of the most important factors include:

Sex Bounce

9.6

Edge Support

9.4

Noise

10

In addition to the factors above, there are a few other things to consider as well, like pressure relief and cooling.

Here’s a look at our complete sex formula:

Sex Score Formula = (Bounce * 0.6) + (Edge Support * 0.2) + (Noise * 0.1) + (Pressure Relief * 0.05) + (Cooling * 0.05)

We use the following scores, plugged into the formula, to derive a sex score for each mattress.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScore
Bounce60%9.6
Edge Support20%9.4
Noise10%10
Pressure Relief5%9.5
Cooling5%9.5

For the Diamond Tailor mattress, these individual factors generated a sex score of 9.6.

This mattress has a moderate level of bounce, which is good, but not that great for noteworthy sex performance.

Diamond Tailor Classic Hybrid relaxing
Diamond Tailor Classic Hybrid relaxing

In the same way, edge support is good, but not great. These two factors alone make up 80% of the sex performance score and neither is really exceptional.

The other 20% of the sex score is made up of noise, pressure relief, and cooling performance. All of these are good scores across the board, but not strong enough to offset the edge support and bounce score.

9.5

Pressure Relief Test

Pressure relief for the Diamond Tailor Classic Hybrid is excellent. During our tests, I felt plenty of pressure relief in all sleeping positions. The Tailor uses a super thick 6.0” comfort layer, including a softer 2.0” quilted cover.

Comfort Layer

6.0″

Support Layer

8.0″

Most mattresses utilize a 3-4” comfort layer. It’s got all the design and material elements necessary for excellent pressure relief.

I am confident in the mattress for sleepers up to 300 pounds. It’s thick, has ample comfort and transition layers, and a robust support coil system. I see no major issues with pressure relief.

9.5

Off-Gassing Test

The Diamond Tailor mattress had a strong smell initially that lasted for 6 days.

Initial Smell Strength

Strong

Off-Gassing Period

6 days

The average off-gassing period is around 3 days so the Tailor is about twice as long as average.

Once a mattress off-gasses, the process is complete. So although important, the off-gassing is really only a factor for about the first week.

To speed up off-gassing, place the mattress in a well-ventilated room and leave off any restrictive bedding.

9.8

Company

The Diamond company has been making mattresses for over 80 years and is well-established in the industry. They offer a 120-night trial period, a lifetime warranty (for the original owner).

How firm is the Diamond Tailor?

The Diamond Tailor mattress has a medium firm feel of 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This firmness is generally suitable for a wide range of sleepers.

firmness - 6 out of 10 - medium

It is soft enough for lightweight sleepers to get pressure relief, but still firm enough to also provide support for heavier sleepers.

Support & Sleeping Positions

Support on the Diamond Tailor mattress is excellent. In our tests, I felt fully supported in all sleeping positions. As with pressure relief, the Tailor has all of the design and material components to create more than sufficient support.

Given the performance I experienced, along with an analysis of the material layers and design, I am confident that the mattress will be supportive for sleepers up to 300 pounds.

Design

The Diamond Tailor hybrid is a medium firmness mattress, designed with widespread appeal in mind. It has a 14″ high profile, with 6″ of that being the comfort layer alone.

Materials

From top to bottom, there are five layers on the Diamond Tailor mattress. The layers include the following:

  • 2.0” quilted cover
  • 1.0” copper poly foam
  • 1.0” copper poly foam
  • 2.0” poly foam
  • 8.0” support foam

The Cover

The Diamond Tailor hybrid mattress has a 2.0″ quilted cover with moisture-wicking properties, and a diagonal stitching pattern.

The Comfort Layer

Beneath the quilted cover are two layers of copper poly foams. These are CertiPUR-Us certified foam, specifically designed to pull heat away from the body while you sleep.

In general, copper is naturally an excellent conductor of heat as well as being antimicrobial and antibacterial. These properties make it a nice choice for a cooling mattress comfort layer.

The Support Layer

Beneath the poly foams is the support layer for the Diamond Tailor hybrid mattress, which consists of an 8″ layer of pocketed coils.

Each set of coils is individually encased in a thin fabric, which allows the springs to move independently from one another.

This helps limit motion transfer and also improve pressure relief.

Product Evolution

The Diamond Tailor hybrid mattress is one of 4 new Diamond mattresses that were launched in August of 2022.

Being that these are newer mattresses on the market, there have been no major design changes to note since the launch.

How is the Diamond Tailor Different?

Wondering how the Diamond Tailor Classic hybrid stands out amongst other Diamond mattresses or other hybrids in general? Here are a couple of key differences.

#1. Extra-Thick Comfort Layer

The 6″ comfort layer is a big benefit for the Diamond Tailor Classic. Thicker comfort layers typically mean better pressure relief, contour, and comfort overall. Thicker comfort layers also tend to be more suitable for a wider range of sleepers and varying sleeping positions as well.

#2. Budget Price

The Diamond Tailor offers a high-profile hybrid mattress at a much lower cost compared to many similar mattresses. There are few hybrids where you can get a Queen size for $899.
