Best For

  • Excellent cooling performance, with fast heat dissipation
  • Low motion transfer so partners don’t disturb each other
  • A thick 4.5” comfort layer for excellent pressure relief and support for most body types

Considerations

  • Higher bounce of 9.22” is great for sex, but some sleepers may not enjoy the added bounce
  • Both sitting & lying edge support leaves something to be desired

Our Verdict

The Aurora Luxe by Brooklyn Bedding is a 12″H hybrid mattress with a combination of foams as well as a base of zoned coils, targeted to be more supportive in the middle and less firm towards the ends of the mattress.

It scored great in our performance tests, offering good cooling, low levels of motion transfer, a fast response time, and great pressure relief. The only real strike against it is the edge performance, which was a little lacking. Aside from that one issue, the Aurora Luxe is a fantastic mattress.

How is Aurora Luxe Different?

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora has slightly better overall performance than average, but also a price tag that is 26% higher than average.

Advantages

This mattress has slightly better cooling performance, lower levels of motion transfer, fast material response time,

Neutral Factors

Neutral factors include 10% less sinkage than average as well as 5% less bounce than average. These factors are more preferential than anything else, but certainly worth considering.

Disadvantages

Edge support is lacking on the Aurora hybrid with 5.5″ of sinkage when seated right at the edge. The trial period is also a bit shorter than average.

Cooling Test

Overall, the cooling performance was excellent. Subjectively speaking, during our cooling tests I felt comfortably cool. The mattress seems to breathe well and I felt no notable heat retention issues.

Certainly, the hybrid design plays a big part in facilitating excellent air flow. Looking at our objective data, the max temperature was very slightly under the average.

  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe hit a maximum temperature of 91.1° F. Compare this to the average across all mattresses we’ve tested, which is 91.2° F.

Despite the average max temperature, the Aurora mattress did an excellent job when it came to heat dissipation. After just 1 minute off of the mattress, it had reduced to a temperature of 86.7°, a decline of 4.4° F.

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora continued to gradually decrease temperature further from there to a final temperature of 84.6°F.

Both objectively and subjectively speaking, the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora mattress sleeps cool.

Sinkage Test

Sinkage on the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora is moderate, and basically what we expect from a medium-firm mattress. In our pressure point test, we measured 1.98” of sinkage.

Sinkage Depth

1.98″

Sinkage Feel

Moderate

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe sinkage

For most sleepers, this is enough sinkage to create sufficient pressure relief and supporting contour, but not so much as to create heat retention issues or any type of entrapped feeling.

Looking at our entire library of mattress test data to date, on average mattresses compress by 2.14″ in our pressure point test.

10

Motion Transfer Test

Motion transfer on the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora mattress is low. In our motion transfer tests, our accelerometer measured 4.61 m/s² of acceleration range.

This puts motion transfer levels of the Aurora Luxe below average compared to all mattresses we’ve tested to date.

Our average acceleration range is 5.95 m/s². The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

Max. Acceleration

2.28 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-2.33 m/s²

Accel. Range

4.61 m/s²

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by the level of motion. Often times hybrid mattresses can create high motion, due to the layer of pocketed coils.

However, Brooklyn Bedding does a nice job of mitigating and managing motion.

Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe motion transfer chart

It’s not the absolute lowest we’ve seen. Nectar’s Premier Copper came in at 1.88 m/s², Leesa’s Original scored 2.06 m/s², and Layla’s Hybrid hit 2.45 m/s².

So if keeping motion to an absolute minimum is important that is something you may want to consider.

10

Response Test

The response time on the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora mattress was fast. Within 0.3 seconds most of the materials rebound to their original shape after pressure is removed. And a full recovery of the materials takes 0.7 seconds.

Mostly Recovered

0.3 sec.

Complete Recovery

0.7 sec.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

The full recovery time is slightly better than average, which is 0.88 seconds across all mattresses we’ve tested to date. And the mostly recovered time is also notably better than the average of 0.51 seconds.

This type of response time ensures you never feel stuck in the mattress. And it helps to allow you to change positions during the night and make for easy movement in, on, and off the mattress.

Bounce Test

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora mattress has a moderate to high level of bounce. In our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 9.22”.

This is a little higher than the average across all mattresses we’ve tested to date, which is 8.57”. Bounce is neither good, nor bad, and more of a preferential factor.

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

Some sleepers really like a more traditional feel with higher bounce, while others prefer less. However, more bounce will definitely give it a more classic feel and also improves performance for sex.

8.8

Edge Support Test

Edge support was a bit of a mixed bad. For sitting it’s good, not great. In our sitting edge support tests, we measured a maximum compression of 5.5”.

That said, for lying on the mattress, support is excellent.

Max. Sinkage

5.5″

Lying Support

Good

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Hybrid edge support vest
Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe edge support with vest

This is higher than the average across all mattresses we’ve tested to date, which is 4.89”. While I generally like to see it at or less than 5”, 5.5” isn’t that far off, and the edge is still reasonably supportive even while sitting directly on it.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

Edge support while lying directly on the edge is okay, but not great. When lying directly on the edge there is definitely a sensation of the materials collapsing in the top layers. It just doesn’t feel nearly as supportive compared to many other hybrids we’ve tested.

9.5

Sex Test

The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.

These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce60%9.8Moderate
Edge Support20%8.8Good
Noise10%9Moderate
Pressure Relief5%9.5Excellent
Cooling5%9.5Excellent

For the Aurora Luxe, these individual factors generated a sex score of 9.5.

The most important factor, levels of bounce, is very good for active sex. The coils combined with the foam layers provide good movement, activity, and response, which all contribute to better sex.

The pressure relief and cooling were also good on the Aurora Luxe, as well as limited noise during sex. A quiet mattress can be useful if you’re doing the deed with others in the house.

The biggest disadvantage of this mattress is the edge support. While coils typically provide better edge support, the top layers of foam make it harder for that edge support to translate up.

9.5

Pressure Relief Test

Pressure relief was excellent. The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora mattress has a super thick 4.5” comfort layer. This blend of latex-like poly foam and memory foam creates fantastic pressure relief for sleepers of all weights and all positions.

Structurally, the Aurora mattress has almost everything I look for in a mattress that’s going to provide strong pressure relief.

After the initial unboxing, there was a strong smell. The smell lingered for about 3 days. After which, it had dissipated to a level where it wasn’t bothersome.

Company

The company score takes a look at factors that may influence your experience with the mattress.

Factors include length of the trial period, warranty, shipping / return costs, and country of origin.

Brooklyn Bedding offers a 120-night trial period for their mattress and if at any point in that window, you change your mind for a refund (minus a $99 return fee).

I will add here, that you need to try the mattress for 30 days before requesting a refund. This is known as the “Break-In Period” and it is pretty common in the industry. Waiting 30 days allows your body some time to get used to the mattress.

Assuming you keep the mattress, Brooklyn Bedding offers a 10-year warranty with reasonable terms and conditions.

Compared to the average, the trial and warranty are both slightly shorter than average but still should be sufficiently long for most sleepers.

How firm is the Aurora Luxe?

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe mattress is available in 3 firmness levels. Soft (4 out of 10), medium (6 out of 10), and firm (8 out of 10).

Our tests here are based on the medium version.

Support & Sleeping Positions

Because of the moderate firmness of the Aurora, most sleepers should find this mattress to be comfortable, regardless of body size or sleeping position preferences.

Design

The Aurora Luxe has a balanced hybrid feel. The top layers of latex-like foam give it an excellent response time and a balanced contour. The memory foam within the core adds improved pressure relief.

Lastly, the layer of pocketed coils below ensures fantastic airflow, cooling, bounce, and support.

From top to bottom, the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora checks all the major boxes I am looking for—a truly fantastic hybrid mattress.

Materials

There are five total layers on the Aurora Luxe—three layers of foam followed by the support system. Here is a detailed breakdown of the layers:

  • 1.5″ latex-like poly foam
  • 2.0″ latex-like poly foam
  • 1.0″ gel memory foam
  • 8.0″ pocketed coils
  • 0.75″ support foam

The Cover

The Aurora has a proprietary phase change cover that uses their TitanCool material. This material is soft, stretchy, and designed to keep the sleeping surface cool (ideally 88°, according to Brooklyn Bedding) by using phase change technology.

That 88° mark feels pretty aggressive, especially considering our surface temperature check measured 91.2° after lying on the mattress for 15 minutes.

The sides of the mattress use a more durable material with quilted seaming to provide strength and form to the sides of the mattress.

There are also quilted handles located on the sides of the mattress, making it easy to move the mattress as needed.

The Comfort Layer

The comfort layer is 4.5″ thick and is broken down into three individual layers of foam. Both of the top two layers are a latex-like poly foam.

Unlike memory foam, poly foam is designed to have a faster response time, better cooling, and bounce performance.

Below the poly foam is a 1.0″ thick layer of gel memory foam. This memory foam provides pressure relief, contour, and deep compression, as sleepers engage with the deeper-level foam when sleeping.

The Support Layer

Below the foams is an 8.0″ thick layer of pocketed coils. These coils are each encased in fabric. Pocketing the coils separately helps to limit noise as well as limit motion transfer.

Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe coils
Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe coils

In addition, these coils are also zoned, which means that the coils in the middle are designed to support more weight and pressure than the coils located at the top or bottom ends of the mattress.

Zoned coils can improve pressure relief and help the mattress to wear evenly, as well as maintain spinal alignment.

Below the coils is a thin layer of high-density foam that’s roughly 0.75″ thick. This base foam provides a thin layer of support for pushback from the coils.

Product Evolution

The Aurora Luxe first came out in 2017 as a standard hybrid, with a combination of foams and coils. But the original Aurora is not the same as the Aurora that ships out today.

The original Aurora used Ascension X coils, which is a pocketed coil with consistent firmness, and gauge across the entirety of the mattress.

Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe close up corner
Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe close-up corner

Today, the Aurora Luxe uses foam and Zoned coils.

Zoned coils are designed to target different areas of the mattress in different ways.

They are firmer in the center of the mattress, where pressure is high, and softer on the ends, where pressure is typically less.

Other Mattresses to Consider

Not sure if the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is the best choice for you? Here are three more top-performing mattress recommendations that offer good performance with a similar feel in some areas.

For Better Edge Support

Ghostbed Classic Foam Layers

GhostBed Classic

Combo Foam, No Coils

The GhostBed Classic has an 11″ thick profile (1″ less than the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe) and is made entirely of foam, no coils. Despite being 100% foam, the GhostBed actually had better edge performance than the Aurora.

For More Coils

Leesa Legend end section mattress materials

Leesa Legend

Micro Coils + Base Coils

The Leesa Legend has more coils than the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe. There are the base coils, but also a thin layer of micro coils within the top layers of foam. Extra coils provide more bounce and great cooling

For Savings

Helix Midnight Luxe Material Layers

Helix Midnight

Same Score, Less Cost

The Helix Midnight is another 12″H hybrid mattress with very similar materials are the Aurora. It only has a 3.0″ comfort layer (2 layers of foam), but during our performance tests, it actually had the exact same score—9.56 overall. This could be a good option for light to moderately-sized sleepers.
