Considerations

  • Long assembly time
  • Higher price point than virtually all organic latex hybrids we’ve tested to date
  • Very high levels of motion transfer

Our Verdict

The Naturepedic EOS is available in 3 different types, Classic, Pillow top, and Trilux. We tested the pillowtop version.

The Naturepedic EOS pillow top mattress is a 15″ latex hybrid with a wide range of custom materials and firmnesses. Depending on which layers you select during ordering, you may receive a drastically different feel.

In our tests, this mattress did exceedingly in all but one test, motion transfer, where the performance was less-than-great. The EOS mattress outperforms or ties even our highest-scoring latex hybrid (the Saatva Latex Hybrid) in 4 out of our 8 scoring tests.

The primary selling point for the EOS is the incredible level of customization. There are 5 different firmness options and the ability to get an internal split firmness on the Queen, King, and Cal King sizes.

This allows each sleeper to get the precise feel that works best for their body.

Lastly, the material quality on the EOS simply cannot be overstated. This is an incredibly high quality and durable mattress. Nevertheless, it’s also incredibly expensive. As a result, it’s not the best value mattress, but if the customization and organic materials are critical then the EOS remains a good option.

Performance Tests

At NapLab, we put each mattress to the test.

We test 10 different factors that impact the performance, comfort, and value of the mattress. Testing categories include:

Naturepedic EOS Versions

There are 3 main versions of the Naturepedic EOS mattress:

  1. Classic
  2. Pillow top
  3. Trilux (all-latex comfort layer)

We tested the pillow top version in a split queen configuration—plush on one side and medium on the other side. Our tests and data below are primarily based on the plush side of the mattress.

How is the Naturepedic EOS Different?

The Naturepedic EOS mattress has a higher performance than average, but also a significantly higher price tag as well—2.6 times the price of an average latex hybrid.

Advantages

This mattress has better-than-average cooling performance as well as faster response time. Edge support is also better than average, with 3.75″ of sitting sinkage—10% better performance than average.

Neutral Factors

Sinkage is 24% deeper than average and the EOS also has slightly less bounce than average (9% less than average).

This mattress is also 15″ thick, 3.1″ thicker than average. While a thick mattress doesn’t always guarantee better performance, it is certainly a good sign.

Disadvantages

Motion transfer levels are 63% higher than average, which is arguably the biggest disadvantage of the EOS. While the price may be a barrier for some sleepers, others may argue that the expansive customization options give the EOS a unique place in the market.

Cooling Test

The Naturepedic EOS has exceptionally good cooling performance. In our tests, I did not feel any significant level of heat retention around my body.

Baseline Temp.

78.2° F

Max Temp.

92.3° F

Ending Temp.

83.2° F

From top to bottom, the mattress is built with materials that help reduce heat retention and increase breathability.

The coils create airflow, the latex naturally resists heat retention (especially relative to poly foam), the aeration holes within the latex create better airflow, and the split latex layers (4 separate pieces) help to create air gaps.

Max Temp.

Naturepedic Eos Before Cooling Test
Naturepedic Eos Before Cooling Test

Ending Temp

Naturepedic Eos After Cooling Test
Naturepedic Eos After Cooling Test
  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

All of these design factors combine to create exceptional cooling. In our objective testing, we measured a max surface level temperature of 92.3°. After getting off the mattress the temperature declined by 4.9°, which is 0.36° cooler than average.

From minutes 0 to 5 the temperature declined by 9.1 degrees, which is 2.16 degrees cooler than average.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Naturepedic Eos Heat Dissipation Chart

When we consider the complete picture of objective data, subjective experience, and material analysis, I am confident most sleepers will find the cooling performance to be exceptionally good.

Sinkage Test

The Naturepedic EOS has a very deep level of sinkage. In our tests, we measured a total sinkage depth of 2.71”. This is 0.53” deeper than the average of 2.18”.

Sinkage Depth

2.71″

Sinkage Feel

Very Deep

Bear in mind, our tests were conducted on the plush version of the EOS. The EOS is available in 5 different firmnesses. Naturally, the softer versions will have more sinkage, while the firmer versions have less.

The EOS creates a fairly typical latex hybrid feel. It has a generalized body contouring hug.

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Naturepedic Eos Sinkage Test
Naturepedic Eos Sinkage Test

Unlike memory and many poly foams, which create a dramatic and exacting hug around the body, the EOS creates a more generalized depression where your body lies. This helps to prevent the foam layers from overly wrapping around your body, which can cause some sleepers to feel stuck.

7.9

Motion Transfer Test

The Naturepedic EOS has a very high level of motion transfer. In our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 13.55 m/s². This is 63.1% (5.24 m/s²) more motion transfer than the average of 8.31 m/s².

Max. Acceleration

7.17 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-6.38 m/s²

Accel. Range

13.55 m/s²

When we consider the material design it’s easy to see why we have such high motion. Latex as a material naturally has more bounce and faster response. Likewise, the coil unit has high bounce and fast response.

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

While the split configuration is likely to help to reduce motion at some level, it’s just not enough to overcome the challenges inherent to latex and latex hybrid mattresses.

Bear in mind, this isn’t an issue with EOS specifically, but rather with most latex and latex hybrid mattresses.

The simple fact is, if you desire a latex or latex hybrid then you should expect the motion to be on the higher side.

In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we see the highest motion from 0 to 0.21 seconds. We do see a rapid decline thereafter, but it’s not until 0.70 seconds that we return to near-zero levels of motion.

Naturepedic Eos Motion Transfer Chart

Mattresses with the lowest motion are able to disperse all energy within 0.3 seconds and will have a motion spike far less than the average. All that to say, the Naturepedic EOS has a very high level of motion transfer.

10

Response Test

The Naturepedic EOS has an extremely fast material response time. In our tests, we measured a mostly recovered response time of 0.2 seconds and a fully recovered response time of 0.8 seconds.

Mostly Recovered

0.2 sec.

Complete Recovery

0.8 sec.

At 0.2 seconds to mostly recover the response speed is effectively instant. Given the latex hybrid design, we weren’t surprised by the rapid response.

While most of the materials recover instantly, there are some materials (cotton fill, wool batting, and PLA layer) that take slightly longer to fully recover at 0.8 seconds.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

Notably, this is just a touch faster than the average full material recovery speed of 0.84 seconds. Overall, we found responsiveness on the Naturepedic EOS to be extremely fast.

Bounce Test

The Naturepedic has a moderate level of bounce. In our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 8.87”. This is 0.78” less bounce than the average of 9.65”.

Max. Depth

Typically, latex and latex hybrid mattresses will have a higher level of bounce. However, we don’t see that here. Most likely the bounce is being slightly restrained by the thick layer of quilted materials.

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

These materials, in combination with the softer feel of the model we tested, absorb much of the bounce. Nevertheless, at 8.87” the EOS still has enough bounce to improve ease of movement and sex performance.

9.6

Edge Support Test

The Naturepedic has excellent edge support for both sitting and lying. In our sitting edge support tests, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 3.75”. This is 0.41” less sinkage compression than the average of 4.16”.

Max Sinkage

3.75″

Lying Support

Excellent

In general, I like to see 4.0” of sitting sinkage or less and the EOS hit that mark. Lying edge support was equally as impressive.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

During our tests, I felt well supported in all sleeping positions even when lying directly on the edge of the mattress. The extra-thick total profile and reinforced edge support coils make a significant difference in terms of total edge support.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

Even with the softer feel, the mattress was fully supported at the edge. Overall, I’m pleased with the edge performance that we experienced and measured.

9.7

Sex Test

The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.

These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce60%9.7Moderate
Edge Support20%9.6Excellent
Noise10%10Minimal
Pressure Relief5%10Exceptional
Cooling5%10Exceptional

For the Naturepedic EOS, these individual factors generated a sex score of 9.7.

This mattress has moderate levels of bounce—a total bounce height of 8.87” which is 0.78” less bounce than the average of 9.65”.

Naturepedic Eos Edge Support Sitting
Naturepedic Eos Edge Support Sitting

Bouce is critically important for good sex so the EOS bounce levels are good, but not great.

That said, this is another area where bounce was likely worse due to the softer materials in the plush mattress that we tested. The medium, cushion firm, and firm mattresses would all likely have higher bounce and better sex performance as a result.

Edge support is also excellent with a score of 9.6 and sitting sinkage of 3.75″, 10% better support than the average level we see.

10

Pressure Relief Test

Pressure relief on the Naturepedic EOS was exceptionally good. During our tests, I felt no significant level of pressure point build-up anywhere on my body.

Comfort Layer

6.0″

Support Layer

8.0″

The mattress was incredibly comfortable to lie on in all sleeping positions. Looking at the material composition it’s easy to see why. We have 15” of total mattress profile with 6.0” of organic natural latex comfort layers.

The comfort layer is broken up into two layers that are each 3.0” thick. On average, we see a 4.2” comfort layer (based on all of the mattresses we’ve tested to date).

Naturepedic Eos 3
Naturepedic Eos 3

At 6.0” thick the EOS is significantly thicker than average. In addition, the latex itself feels incredibly high quality. It’s all-natural, organic, and wrapped into a protective cloth layer.

Having the option to order a different firmness on each side of a Queen, King, or Cal King mattress is also incredibly helpful, as it allows each sleeper to find the firmness that’s best suited to their needs.

Overall, I am exceedingly pleased with the level of pressure relief. I expect most sleepers will find it more than satisfactory.

9.6

Off-Gassing Test

Off-gassing on the Naturepedic EOS mattress was strong right out of the box and took 5 days to fully off-gas.

Initial Smell Strength

Strong

Off-Gassing Period

5 days

The average off-gassing period is 4.6 days so the EOS hybrid is just slightly beyond this range.

Naturepedic Eos Cover Close

It’s not a typical off-gassing poly foam smell, but make no mistake, even an organic and all-natural mattress can have a strong smell.

The wool, latex, and organic cotton all have a strong smell. It’s not nearly as offensive as memory or poly foams will be, but it’s still something.

9.8

Company

The company score takes a look at factors that may influence your experience with the mattress.

Factors include length of the trial period, warranty, shipping / return costs, and country of origin.

For Naturepedic, these individual terms and conditions generated a company score of 9.8.

The EOS mattress comes with a 100-night trial and a 25-year warranty. A trial period of that length is 38% shorter than the average trial length of 162 nights.

Naturepedic Eos Foot
Naturepedic Eos Foot

In addition, the 25-year warranty is longer than many other mattresses. Comparing all mattresses tested to date, 27% have lifetime warranties, and the average of the other 73% of mattresses is 14 years.

Beyond trial and warranty, this mattress also offers free shipping and returns.

How firm is the Naturepedic EOS?

The Naturepedic EOS mattress is available in a range of firmnesses. You can even opt for a split firmness mattress, which has one firmness on one side and an alternate firmness on the other side.

We tested a Split Queen with a plush softness on one side and a medium version on the other side.

The firmness of the mattress varies depending on how the materials are layered. The table below details how to obtain the different firmness levels.

Support & Sleeping Positions

The Naturepedic EOS has exceptionally good support. During our tests, I felt fully supported in all sleeping positions. In terms of materials, it checks all of the boxes I look for. We have a thick and high-quality pocketed coil unit that’s 8.0″ thick.

Said unit also contains reinforced edge support coils, helping to ensure good support extends all the way to the end of the mattress.

Furthermore, the EOS contains an incredibly thick 6.0” comfort layer.

Naturepedic Eos Open Cover

This layer creates ample pressure relief, ensuring that sleepers are both supported, but also comfortable.

Last, and arguably the most important factor, the EOS is available in split firmness configurations in the Queen, King, and Cal King sizes.

This means you can get a different firmness on each side of the mattress.

As a result, sleepers with different firmness needs don’t need to compromise with their partner. Instead, each sleeper gets the precise firmness and support that’s best suited to their body and sleeping position.

The EOS is available in 5 different firmnesses, creating an incredibly wide range of options. Overall, I’m pleased with the level of support and found this mattress to be suitable for an all-encompassing range of sleepers (as shown in the table below).

Design

The Naturepedic EOS is one of the most customizable hybrids we’ve tested to date. It comes in three different styles with additional options available within each style (ex: latex-free, all-latex, vegan, and varying firmnesses).

Assembly Time

As an added mention, the Naturepedic EOS mattress comes unassembled. Each layer is individually packaged and you need to assemble the mattress upon unboxing. The assembly is a lengthy process and took me a little over an hour to fully setup.

The foams are a little unwieldy to put together and some of the materials are quite abrasive, mostly the brass zipper. I sustained some minor cuts and abrasions after the whole thing was said and done.

Naturepedic Eos Cut Hand 2
Naturepedic Eos Cut Hand 1

While this may not be a huge issue for all sleepers, it may be to others, depending on personal strength and how much effort you want to put into setup.

Materials

There are three major layers used on the EOS mattress. The top two layers are for comfort while the bottom layer is specifically for support. From top to bottom, the layers include:

  • 3.0” organic latex
  • 3.0” organic latex
  • 8.0” pocketed coils

The Cover

The cover of the Naturepedic EOS is a soft, quilted organic cotton. It has a natural look and feel with a contrasting black and gold zipper that wraps around the perimeter of the mattress.

Naturepedic Eos Zipper

The pillowtop version of the mattress has a zippered compartment for the pillowtop, in addition to a separate zipped compartment for the support coils below.

The Comfort Layer

In testing the Pillowtop EOS, there were two layers of organic, hole-punched, natural latex. Each layer was 3.0″ thick and encased in a thin fabric for protection. You can swap the layers to change the feel of the mattress or order a new layer entirely.

Naturepedic Eos Top Latex Layers
Naturepedic Eos Top Latex Layers

The EOS mattress comes with a 100-night trial period and a comfort guarantee. If you try a layer and find that it’s too soft or too firm for your liking, simply contact Naturepedic and exchange the layer for something different.

This is one of the design features that makes the EOS so attractive to sleepers with varying or uncertain needs.

The Support Layer

The support layer is contained with a secondary zippered compartment below the pillowtop. This layer has an 8″ thick layer of pocketed coils.

Naturepedic Eos Materials

Depending on the overall firmness of the mattress, these coils may be plush or firm.

Product Evolution

The Naturepedic EOS mattress has been around for the larger part of 10 years, undergoing changes throughout the years.

While exact design changes over the years are unclear, one change we can note is the Naturepedic trail period changing from 90 nights (back in 2020) to 100 nights.

Other Mattresses to Consider

For Performance

Saatva Latex Hybrid Material Layers

Saatva Latex Hybrid

9.77 Overall Score

The Saatva Latex Hybrid is the highest-performing latex hybrid mattress we’ve tested to date. It only comes in one firmness, medium-firm (6.5 out of 10), but if that’s the right option for you Saatva is a solid pick. It has a 4.0″ comfort layer and a lower price tag compared to the EOS.

For Motion Transfer

Birch Luxe Material Layers

Birch Luxe

9.67 Overall Score

The Birch Luxe mattress only has a 3.5″ comfort layer, which is notably less than the 6.0″ comfort layer on the EOS, but overall performance matches that of the Naturepedic. The Birch Luxe also has a pillowtop cover, unlike the thinner cover on the standard Birch. The Luxe does a great job of limiting motion transfer, an area where the EOS mattress struggles.

Avocado Eco Material Layers

Avocado Eco

9.67 Overall Score

The Avocado Eco is a 10″ organic latex hybrid mattress with a price tag that is 73% lower than the Naturepedic EOS, as well as 30% less than the average latex hybrid. The low price balanced by the solid performance makes the Eco a fantastic value. Note: This mattress comes in only one firmness, medium (5.5 out of 10), and may not be suitable for sleepers over 250 lbs.
