Best For
- Exceptional pressure relief
- Extremely fast response time
- Removable zipper cover
Considerations
- Relatively low bounce for a hybrid (6.71 total bounce)
- Less than ideal edge support
Our Verdict
The Puffy Lux hybrid mattress has a 13″ profile height, with 5″ of that being comfort materials. It offers a blend of foam and coils for a balanced feel.
In our performance tests, the Puffy Lux showed good cooling, extremely fast response, and excellent pressure relief. Areas that hurt the score included low (but not very low) motion transfer levels, good but not great edge support, and low bounce that hurt the sex score.
Despite the minor shortcomings, overall the Puffy Lux is an excellent hybrid mattress. The contouring hug and pressure relief is the headline story. I felt incredibly comfortable throughout our tests.

Performance Tests
At NapLab, we put each mattress to the test.
We test 10 different factors that impact the performance, comfort, and value of the mattress. Testing categories include:
Test | Rating |
---|---|
Cooling | Excellent |
Sinkage | Moderate |
Motion Transfer | Low |
Response Time | Extremely Fast |
Bounce | Low |
Edge Support | Very Good |
Sex | Very Good |
Pressure Relief | Exceptional |
Off-Gassing | Excellent |
Company | Excellent |
Cooling Test
Cooling performance on the Puffy Lux is excellent. During our tests, I felt no significant level of heat retention around my body.
Baseline Temp.
65.1° F
Max Temp.
85.3° F
Ending Temp.
73.0° F
The mattress uses a thicker all-foam 5” comfort layer, which means it’s not perfect. Even so, the thin cover, poly foam (instead of memory foam), and hybrid design all work together to help keep heat retention in check.
The hybrid design improves breathability, as does the absence of memory foam. In our objective cooling tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 85.3 degrees F. After getting off the mattress the temperature dropped 8 degrees from minute 0 to 1, with a 12.3° drop occurring from minutes 0 to 5. Overall, I’m pleased and impressed with the Puffy’s ability to reduce and release heat.
Max Temp.
Ending Temp
- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
Heat Dissipation Over Time
Sinkage Test
The Puffy Lux has a moderate level of sinkage depth. In our pressure point tests, we measured a sinkage depth of 2.23”. This is just 0.01” deeper than the average sinkage depth of 2.22”, based on all of our tests to date.
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.
The Puffy Lux has a more pronounced and exacting contour around the body. While the medicine ball test was moderate, when I lie on the mattress I feel a deeper level of hug around my body (especially heavier sections of my body).
Despite the fact that the Puffy uses poly foam, it feels far more like memory foam. All that to say, the feeling is fantastic, delivering amazing pressure relief.
This is one of the best-feeling hybrid mattresses I’ve tested in quite a while. Overall, I’m extremely happy with the sinkage dynamic. It’s well-balanced, creates high contour, and has fantastic pressure relief.
Motion Transfer Test
The Puffy Lux has a low level of motion transfer. In our tests, we measured 8.09 m/s² of acceleration range. This is just slightly higher than the average motion based on all of our tests to date, which is 7.66 m/s².
The level of motion transfer is documented in the video below.
The thick 5.0” all foam comfort layer does a nice job at absorbing and dispersing energy. While the hybrid design does create more bounce, it still keeps energy in check.
Max. Acceleration
3.79 m/s²
Min. Acceleration
-4.30 m/s²
Accel. Range
8.09 m/s²
In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we recorded the highest energy spikes from 0 to 0.14 seconds. After 0.14 seconds energy drops off significantly and by 0.65 seconds it has returned to near zero levels.
The mattresses with the lowest motion transfer are able to return to near-zero levels within 0.3 seconds. Puffy isn’t quite to that level, but it’s better than most and overall creates low motion transfer. No major complaints from me.
Response Test
Response time is a bit of a mixed bag on the Puffy Lux. In our tests, we measured a mostly recovered response time of 0.5 seconds. This speed puts it into the “extremely fast” category.
Mostly Recovered
0.5 sec.
Complete Recovery
1.2 sec.
However, the fully recovered response time was notably slower at 1.2 seconds. A full material recovery of 1.2 seconds is a moderate recovery speed, 0.31 seconds slower than the average of 0.89 seconds.
Despite the fact that it’s technically not memory foam, it still behaves essentially like memory foam with respect to the response time.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
For most sleepers, I don’t expect the response speed will be an issue. It’s still fast enough that most sleepers won’t be bothered by the fact that some of the material takes a bit longer to return back to its original shape.
Bounce Test
The Puffy Lux has a low level of bounce. In our tests, we measured 6.71” of total bounce height. This is 3.03” less bounce than the average of 9.74”.
Max. Depth
4.88″
Max. Rebound
1.83″
Total Bounce
6.71″
Puffy’s softer foams, excellent pressure relief, and poly foams that behave more like memory foam, all work together to suppress and reduce bounce. This level of bounce is far closer to what we typically see on memory foam mattresses and well below the average of a hybrid mattress.
The average bounce height (based on all of our tests) for memory foam is 6.15”. The average bounce height for our hybrid mattress tests is 10.48”.
Max. Sinkage Depth
Max Bounce Height
The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
All that to say, the Puffy Lux has a low level of bounce. For sleepers who prefer a more traditional mattress bounce feel this could be problematic. In addition, the lower bounce reduces sex performance, which we discuss below.
Edge Support Test
Edge support on the Puffy Lux is good, though not amazing. In our sitting edge support tests, we measured 4.25” of sinkage while sitting directly on the edge of the mattress. This is 0.16” less sinkage than the average of 4.41”.
Max Sinkage
4.25″
Lying Support
Excellent
In general, I want to see 4.0” or less. Puffy isn’t quite to that level, but it’s certainly not bad by any definition. While sitting on the edge I felt well-supported.
The 3.0” wide perimeter edge foam is definitely helping to improve overall performance. Oftentimes, foams of this firmness and type struggle more with edge support. The relative performance level that we’re seeing here is quite good.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.
Sitting, 200 lbs.
Lying edge support was a similar story. The medium firm feel and higher contouring hug of the foam, when at the absolute edge, can create a little bit of an unsupported feel. This is especially true for heavier sleepers.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.
Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.
Overall, I’d still say the performance is solid, though I could see more sensitive sleepers wishing it was firmer and more supportive. For most sleepers, it should be sufficient.
Sex Test
Our sex rating formula looks at 5 different factors weighted based on their importance.
All factors are not equal in terms of significance, but each plays an important role.
Three of the most important factors are listed below with the associated testing scores:
Sex Bounce
9.2
Edge Support
9.4
Noise
10
In addition to the factors above, there are two other we consider as well, including pressure relief and cooling.
Here’s a look at the breakdown of how these 3 factors rank within the full formula:
We use the scores from all factors, plugged into the formula above, to derive a sex score for each mattress.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score |
---|---|---|
Bounce | 60% | 9.2 |
Edge Support | 20% | 9.4 |
Noise | 10% | 10 |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 10 |
Cooling | 5% | 9.5 |
For the Puffy Lux, these individual factors generated a sex score of 9.4.
It has low bounce, which is really what hurts the mattress the most, as the bounce is worth 60% of the overall score.
Edge support is also less than amazing, which is worth another 20% of the overall sex score.
Noise, pressure relief, and cooling are good, but the good performance in these areas just isn’t enough to rebound the sex score back to higher levels.
Pressure Relief Test
Pressure relief on the Puffy Lux is exceptionally good. The mattress creates a high level of body contouring with a deeper hug.
Comfort Layer
5.0″
Support Layer
8.0″
The foams wrap more intensely around the exact shape of your body. This feel, combined with the medium firmness and moderate sinkage levels, creates an amazingly good type and level of pressure relief.
Puffy Lux uses 5.0” of comfort material. This is a thicker-than-average comfort layer and is a major factor in the overall pressure relief performance. Overall, I am exceedingly pleased with the pressure relief on the Puffy.
Off-Gassing Test
Right out of the box, the Puffy Lux had a strong smell. This smell took 3 days to fully off-gas. Off-gassing is a pretty standard part of most new, compressed mattresses.

How firm is the Puffy Lux?
The Puffy Lux comes in at a 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This is a medium firmness and would be suitable for a wide range of sleepers.
Support & Sleeping Positions
The Puffy Lux has excellent support. In our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions. The material design checks most of the boxes I look for. It’s on the thicker side at 13”, uses 5.0” of comfort foam, and 9.0” of support materials.
For this reason, I would say that this mattress is suitable for nearly all sleeper weights and sleeping positions.
Sleeper Weight | Stomach Sleepers | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers |
---|---|---|---|
Under 150 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
150-250 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
250-300 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
This material design is robust in the relative thickness and quality of the included materials. I am confident the Puffy Lux could support up to 300 pounds per side. Overall, the Puffy is able to create fantastic support for sleepers.
Design
The design of the Puffy Lux is that of a traditional hybrid. It includes top foam layers, followed by a pocketed coil support base.
Type
Hybrid
Thickness
13″
Firmness
5
Having a 13″ profile height, this mattress has a more luxurious feel than thinner mattresses that we’ve tested.
Materials
From top to bottom, there are five layers on the Puffy Lux hybrid. These layers include:
- 1.5″ poly foam
- 1.5″ poly foam
- 2.0″ poly foam
- 7.0″ pocketed coils
- 1.0″ support foam
The Cover
The cover of the Puffy Lux is a thin, lightweight cover with a cloud design, and zipper closure (at the bottom) This zippable feature allows you to take off the mattress cover and wash, which helps prevent staining or other visual signs of use.
The cover is stretchy and breathable as well. The manufacturer notes it to be hypoallergenic as well as stain resistant.
The Comfort Layer
Below the cover is the comfort layer, which is made up of three different layers of foam. The top two layers of foam are two 1.5″ layers of poly foam followed by a 2.0″ layer of transitional poly foam.
The poly foam has a firmer feel and helps to ease the transition between comfort foam and the support coils below.
The Support Layer
The support layer is made up of 7″ of pocketed coils. These coils are contained within an edge foam that wraps around the perimeter of the mattress.
This perimeter foam is approximately 3.5″ thick. It is designed to provide mattress stability, improve edge support, as well as limit noise and motion transfer from the coils.
Product Evolution
The Puffy Lux hybrid mattress began as an all-foam mattress back in 2018. In 2221, Puffy expanded the Lux collection to include the Puffy Lux hybrid. Since the hybrid was developed in 2021, there have been no major changes to the mattress.
How is the Puffy Lux Different?
The Puffy Lux is a solid hybrid mattress. According to NapLab data, the average price for a hybrid mattress is $1298 for a queen, so the Puffy Lux is slightly beyond that average.
That being said Puffy Lux’s score of 9.66 is above the average score from hybrids (9.48). This puts the Puffy Lux in the top 22% of all hybrid mattresses we’ve tested to date (50 mattresses included).
Although it doesn’t use any particularly unique materials, it does offer great performance.
Among all mattress types, Puffy is in the top 24% of all mattress types we’ve tested.
