The Verdict

Winkbed and Nectar represent two high-performing mattress brands, although they offer distinctly different feels. Winkbed has a hybrid, latex hybrid, memory foam, and a plus-sized mattress. Nectar offers hybrids, a memory foam, and memory foam hybrid option.

Winkbed has a wider firmness range, spanning from 4 – 8 (soft to firm) and Nectar features a narrower range, from 5 – 6 (medium to medium-firm). If you’re looking for an exclusively soft or firm mattress, Winkbed will be the better match in those cases.

Winkbed has a price range from $1,499 to $1,699, while Nectar has an average price range that spans from $649 to $1,799, considering the mattresses that we’ve tested. If you’re ona tight budget, Nectar may be the better choice in this case.

Winkbed mattresses have a performance average of 9.15, considering 4 models. The highest-performing Winkbed is the Winkbed, with a score of 9.79, and the lowest-performing mattress is the Winkbed GravityLux with a score of 8.68.

Nectar mattresses have a performance average of 8.66, considering 7 models. The highest-performing Nectar is the Nectar Luxe Hybrid, with a score of 8.86, and the lowest-performing mattress is the Nectar Classic with a score of 8.52.

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly mattress with a memory foam feel, the Nectar lineup could be the best option. But for better overall performance with a luxury feel, Winkbed will take the win for many sleepers.

Which Mattress Should You Buy?

The mattresses earning the title for “best overall” from each brand have the highest overall performance. Overall performance is determined by scores from 8 different categories including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex performance, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company.

Sinkage and bounce are also taken into consideration, but they are not direct scoring factors.

Between Winkbed and Nectar, the two top recommendations are Winkbed and Nectar Luxe Hybrid.

The Winkbed is a 14″ hybrid mattress with a comfort layer of three different foam types and a pocketed coil base. It has a medium-firm feel with deep sinkage and moderate bounce. A queen-sized Winkbed is $1499, but it also performs in the top 1%, earning 10/10 scores for the following categories: Cooling, Response Time, Edge Support, Pressure Relief, and Off-Gassing. It’s a high-performing hybrid that comes in three firmness levels, making it a great option for sleepers of all sleeping positions and most body weights.

The Nectar Luxe Hybrid is a 13.5″ memory foam hybrid mattress with a combination of memory foam, poly foam, and pocketed coils. It has a medium feel with very deep sinkage and low bounce. This mattress scores in the top 32% of all mattresses tested to date and has a price that is 12% less than the average hybrid (a savings of nearly $200). It earned a 10/10 for outstanding pressure relief but struggles with edge support. Still, for a top-value hybrid mattress, the Nectar Luxe Hybrid checks a lot of boxes.

Read Review

Both Winkbed and Nectar Luxe Hybrid are strong contenders for great mattresses and certainly represent the highest-scoring mattress from within each brand. Both mattresses cost $1499 for a queen mattress, but price aside, there are many differences in these mattresses.

While both mattresses are hybrids, the Nectar Luxe Hybrid has a memory foam comfort layer and a more exacting contour than the Winkbed. The Winkbed has more of a balanced feel.

Both mattresses have deep sinkage, the Nectar being slightly deeper than the Winkbed, and bounce levels are lower on the Nectar as well.

For more firmness options, the Winkbed is the better choice with 3 firmnesses to pick from—Soft (4), Medium-Firm (6), or Slightly Firm (7). The Nectar is only available in one firmness—Medium (5).

Overall, Winkbed has the higher overall performance, but you can save a couple of bucks if you go with Nectar ($100 less than Winkbed if you’re looking for the queen size).

For side sleepers, our top pick goes to the Winkbed and Nectar Luxe Hybrid. Side sleepers benefit from deeper contour and need exceptional pressure relief to maintain proper spinal alignment.

Both Winkbed and Nectar are good options here, although Winkbed offers the higher overall performance score. Both of these mattresses have deep or very deep sinkage and moderate or low bounce. Pressure relief is also 10/10 on both of these mattresses.

The covers are also a bit different, as the Winkbed has a pillow-top style with tufted details, and the Nectar has a thinner cover.

For back or stomach sleepers, I’d recommend the Winkbed or Nectar Premier. Unlike side sleepers, stomach or back sleepers benefit from a slightly firmer feel and with less contour. This promotes the same aim of spinal alignment when lying in a neutral position.

The Nectar Premier has the benefit of slightly less sinkage than the Winkbed, as well as less bounce. Nectar has a medium feel with a firmness of 5 out of 10.

The Winkbed Luxury Firm or the Firmer version could be solid options for sleepers on their back or stomach. This mattress does have deeper sinkage than Nectar, but overall performance is still significantly higher. That being said, the price is also higher—$1499 for a queen, compared to $949 for the Nectar.

Heavier sleepers over 250 lbs. would likely be best suited by the Winkbed Plus or the Nectar Luxe Hybrid could be a potential option as well. Heavier bodies tend to respond well to thicker profiles, extra-thick comfort layers, and reinforced design targeted for pressure relief.

The Winkbed Plus takes the win here, with a higher overall score, a 14.5″ thick profile, and slightly firm feel (7 out of 10). The Nectar Hybrid Luxe is a 13.5″ thick mattress with a medium feel (5 out of 10) and very deep sinkage.

While both mattresses can technically support heavier bodies, the Winkbed Plus would likely provide the best experience for most heavier sleepers. That being said, it will cost sleepers an extra $300 (for a queen mattress).

If cooling is top priority, I’d recommend the Winkbed and Nectar Ultra, both of which earned a 10/10 for cooling performance. That being said, the Winkbed has an overall performance that is over 1 full point higher and also $300 cheaper for a queen mattress than the Ultra.

The Winkbed has a gel foam comfort layer and a pocketed coil base, which allows for better breathability and airflow. The Nectar Ultra is an all-foam mattress, but an advanced cooling cover up top gives it a cool-to-the-touch feel.

  • Click here to read our full review of the Nectar Ultra.

For sleepers on a budget, I’d recommend the Nectar Premier, which falls under $1000 or the Winkbed if your budget extends up to $1500.

There’s no doubt that the Winkbed has a higher overall performance, over 1 full point higher, but the added cost of over $500 more for a queen mattress may just not be worth it for some sleepers.

The Nectar Premier has moderate sinkage, low bounce, and a medium feel (5 out of 10 on the firmness scale). It has great cooling and pressure relief, which both scored a 9/10 in our tests, and a 13″ overall thickness. Nectar mattresses come with a 365-night trial period and a lifetime warranty, so you can try the more affordable mattress with confidence if Winkbed is out of your desired spending budget.

For back pain, I’d recommend the Winkbed Plus and Nectar Hybrid.

If you have back pain, I tend to recommend a slightly firmer feel and a thick comfort layer with optional pressure relief and support. The Winkbed Plus really hits the nail on the head with its slightly firmer feel (7 out of 10) and 14.5″ thickness. Overall performance is superb, and the mattress ranks among the top 4% of all mattresses we’ve tested to date.

The Nectar Hybrid is our top pick from Nectar. It has a surprisingly low price tag (only $799), but also a 12″ thickness, 3.0″ comfort layer, and medium-firm feel (6 out of 10 firmness). While this certainly won’t be as good as the Winkbed Plus, it’s the best from Nectar, as many other Nectar mattresses with better pressure relief also have a softer feel and deeper sinkage.

If sex is a critical factor in your next mattress purchase, check out the Winkbed EcoCloud, which had a sex score of 9.8, significantly higher than anything Nectar offered. For the best sex on a Nectar mattress, our top pick would be the Nectar Hybrid, but even as the “highest score”, the Nectar Hybrid still only scored 8.7.

For good sex, a mattress needs to excel in 5 main categories—bounce and edge support are most critical, with noise, cooling, and pressure relief coming in as less important (although still relevant categories).

The EcoCloud has extremely high bounce and impressive edge support, making git an attractive option for sex performance. The Nectar Hybrid has less bounce and less supportive edges, but for a mattress with a memory foam comfort layer, it’s certainly not bad.

If your ideal mattress has a soft feel, I’d recommend the Winkbed (Softer version). Nectar does not offer any mattresses with a soft feel and therefore foregoes a recommendation in this category.

As we’ve said before, the Winkbed is a strong performer, value-priced ($1499/queen), and has deep sinkage. It also has a plush, Euro-style pillow top cover for a plush, soft feel.

Lighter-weighted sleepers or those who sleep on their side are likely to be best served by the feel of the Softer Winked.

  • Click here to read our full review of the Winkbed.
  • Check out our Best Soft Mattress guide for a full list of other mattresses we recommend instead.

If you’re hoping for a Medium-Firm feel, the Winkbed (Luxury Firm) or Nectar Hybrid would be the top picks.

Both of these mattresses have a medium-firm feel (6 out of 10) and would be suitable for a wide range of sleepers. That being said, again, the Winkbed locks in a significantly higher overall performance.

If you’re on a tight budget and want something under $1000, the Nectar Hybrid could be worth considering, but if you simply want the best medium-firm mattress, the Winkbed will likely be your better option.

  • Click here to read our full review of the Winkbed.
  • Click here to read our full review of the Nectar Hybrid.

For a mattress with a firm feel, I’d recommend the Winkbed (Firmer version). Nectar does not offer any mattresses with a firm feel and therefore foregoes a recommendation in this category.

The firmer Winkbed likely has less sinkage than the Luxury Firm version we tested and potentially higher levels of bounce. The pocketed coil base is fantastic for support.

Heavier sleepers or those who sleep on their back or stomach would be most likely to enjoy the feel of the Firmer Winkbed.

Not sure which firmness you need? Your ideal mattress firmness depends on two major factors—sleeping position and body weight. With the right firmness, your body and spine will maintain proper alignment when sleeping

What Firmness Is Right For You2

Lightweight sleepers or those who sleep on their side tend to need a softer mattress. By comparison, heavier sleepers or those who sleep on their back or stomach tend to need more support and a firmer feel.

Cooling Test

Thinking about cooling, Winkbed has the better performance overall. The average cooling of a Winkbed mattress is 9.7, and the average of a Nectar mattress is 9.0. That being said, none of these mattresses have bad cooling by any means.

The average cooling score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6.

All of the mattresses listed in this comparison have better cooling performance than average. The mattresses with the best cooling performance include the Winkbed or Winkbed Plus, both of which earned a cooling score of 10/10.

All other mattresses earned a cooling score of 9/10, better than average but not quite as good as Winkbed and Winkbed Plus.

Sinkage Test

All Winkbed mattresses have deep sinkage, whereas Nectar offers a wider range of sinkage levels. The average Winkbed sinkage level is 2.4″ and the average Nectar sinkage is 2.2″.

Nectar Premier Hybrid Sinkage Test

The average sinkage depth across all mattresses tested to date is 2.17″.

Back and stomach sleepers usually prefer less sinkage, which better maintains proper alignment of their spine. The Nectar Classic (1.91″) or Nectar Premier (2.12″) both have less sinkage than average and are also a good value, priced under $1000. For the lowest price, opt for the Nectar Classic, which falls under $700 for a queen mattress.

Nectar Classic 2024 Pressure Map Side
Nectar Classic 2024 Pressure Map Side

Generally, side sleepers enjoy a deeper level of sinkage, as that typically translates to better pressure relief and contour. For deeper sinkage, opt for the Winkbed (2.38″), Winkbed EcoCloud (2.35″), or Nectar Premier Hybrid (2.54″). All of these mattresses cost more than $1000, but for side sleepers, the deeper sinkage tends to be much more appropriate to maintain spinal alignment and pressure relief.

Are you over 300 lbs.? Heavier sleepers generally need a mattress with a firmer feel to maintain optimal support. My top recommendation would be the Winkbed Plus (2.5″). This mattress has deeper sinkage, but also uses stronger foam types that are superficially designed for heavier bodies and reinforced coils at the base.

Motion Transfer Test

For the lowest level of motion transfer, Nectar takes the win by a narrow margin. The average motion transfer score of Winkbed is 7.7 and the average of Nectar is 8.0. That being said, the single mattress with the lowest levels of motion transfer is the Winkbed (5.85 m/s²).

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding motion transfer.

The average motion transfer score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.2.

The Nectar with the lowest level of motion transfer is the Nectar Premier Hybrid (8.94 m/s²). What really kills Winkbed’s average score is the insanely high motion levels on the Winkbed EcoCloud.

The EcoCloud is a natural latex hybrid mattress, which historically has a higher level of bounce than foam or hybrid mattresses. This level of bounce can then easily cause higher levels of motion transfer as well.

The level of motion on the EcoCloud (14.92 m/s²) has nearly as much motion as the Winkbed and Winkbed Plus combined.

Response Test

Concerning material response time, Winkbed has a significantly faster response time (9.8 average score). The average response time of Nectar is 8.0.

The Winkbed and Winkbed EcoCloud both scored 10/10 response time scores and have materials that respond nearly instantly. By comparison, the best Nectar is the Nectar Premier with a response time score of 8.8—not as fast as Winkbed, but still average.

The Nectar Classic and Nectar Premier Hybrid both have slower material responsiveness than average. These memory foam layers have a more traditional feel, which tends to retain forms in the mattress for longer before springing back to shape.

Bounce Test

On average, Nectar mattresses have less bounce than Winkbed mattresses. The Winkbed bounce average is 10.4″ and the Nectar bounce average is 7.3″.

The Nectar Classic (8.07″), Nectar Premier Hybrid (7.41″), Winkbed Plus (6.75″), and Nectar Premier (6.38″) all have less bounce than average.

Winkbed Ecocloud Edge Support Sitting
Winkbed Ecocloud Edge Support Sitting

The mattress with the most bounce is the Winkbed EcoCloud (14.58″), nearly twice the bounce of most other mattresses listed in this comparison.

Mattresses with more bounce are better for ease of movement and increase sex performance. However, higher bounce also typically creates a higher level of motion transfer. So there are pros and cons when it comes to bounce.

Edge Support Test

Edge support is fantastic on Winkbed mattresses, with an average edge support score of 10/10. Nectar mattresses are not quite at that level, but still perform better than average. The average edge support score on Nectar mattresses is 8.4.

The average edge support score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6.

The Nectar Classic mattress earned an edge support score of 9.4, giving it great edge support, the best of any Nectar mattress featured here, despite the fact that it doesn’t have a coil base.

The Nectar Premier and Nectar Premier Hybrid both disappoint in this category, with deeper sitting edge sinkage (4.75 – 5.75″), deeper than average, as you can see in the photos below.

Sex Test

For peak sex performance, the Winkbed is going to be the better option. Winkbed’s average sex score is 8.9 and Nectar’s average sex score drops to 7.6.

But when we consider the materials, these scores make sense. Nectar prides itself on high-quality memory foam or memory foam hybrid. By nature, memory foam is generally not as good for sex due to a lower level of bounce compared to some poly foams or latex hybrids. The material is designed to absorb energy and therefore restrict bounce.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding sex.

The Winkbed EcoCloud is the best for sex, with a score 9.8, and Winkbed follows closely behind with a sex score of 9.1. Both of these mattresses have higher levels of bounce and fantastic edge support, two of the most important factors for good sex performance.

Winkbed Ecocloud Top Latex

All Nectar mattresses have lower sex scores than average, ranging from 7.2 to 8.2. These mattresses have a more restrained level of bounce and also worse edge support (excluding the Nectar Classic, which had great edge support).

Pressure Relief Test

Most of the mattresses included in this comparison have good pressure relief. Winkbed’s average pressure relief score is 9.7 and Nectar’s average score of 8.7.

The average pressure relief score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.7.

All mattresses in this comparison have better pressure relief than average, except for the Nectar Classic, which only had a score of 8.0. The Winkbed and Winkbed Plus have the absolute best, with pressure relief scores of 10/10.

Typically speaking, pressure relief has a strong correlation to the thickness of the comfort layer. A thicker comfort layer (paired with a thicker support layer) is one of the most effective ways to see improved pressure relief on a mattress.

This is especially true for side sleepers who may engage more deeply in mattress layers, especially in areas of high pressure like the hips and midsection.

Off-Gassing Test

For faster off-gassing, the Winkbed is the better option with an average off-gassing score of 9.4 and an average duration between 0 – 5 days. Nectar mattresses have an average off-gassing score of 8.4 and an average duration between 4 – 7 days.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding off-gassing.

Winkbed EcoCloud8.6Strong5 days
Winkbed Plus9.7Moderate1 day
Nectar Classic8.3Strong6 days
Nectar Premier8.9Strong4 days

All things considered, neither of these mattresses would be considered to have “long off-gassing” by any stretch.

The average smell duration across all mattresses tested to date is 6.5 days.

By this metric, all of these mattresses have faster off-gassing than average, and the Winkbed experiences no off-gassing at all.

After testing Winkbed models for over a decade, personally reading hundreds of customer feedback and experiences with the brand, as well as my own experiences, I have full confidence in Winkbed as a company. They do what they say they will do and stand by their products.

Nectar, on the other hand, has one mark against them. In 2023, the brand found itself in the middle of a class action lawsuit, which claimed Nectar participated in “unlawful and deceptive business practices” in relation to their pricing structure and advertised sales. Ultimately, things like this can damage the brand’s image in the eyes of consumers.
