Best For

  • Fast material response time
  • Excellent edge support, only 3.25″ of sinkage wheat seated at the edge
  • Good cooling at a budget price

Considerations

  • Higher levels of motion transfer
  • Moderate levels of bounce
  • Slightly longer off-gassing period

Our Verdict

The Leesa Studio Chill mattress is a 12″ thick hybrid designed for good cooling performance on a budget. It is the most affordable Leesa mattress in the Chill collection.

In our performance tests, this mattress really did good in most all categories with the only exception being motion transfer, where we measured 27% higher levels than the average mattress (considering 190+ mattresses tested to date).

Nevertheless, considering the cooling performance at this price point it remains a solid pick for many sleepers.

How is Leesa Studio Chill Different?

The Leesa Studio Chill hybrid has better-than-average overall performance and a price that is also below average—a savings of 27% of the average hybrid (or $355 on a queen mattress).

Advantages

Besides overall performance and price, specific advantages for the Leesa Studio Chiil include better cooling than average, faster material response time, and excellent edge support, sex, and pressure relief.

Neutral Factors

Neutral factors include 4% deeper sinkage than average and 13% less bounce than average. These factors are considered neutral because they are more preferential and less “good vs. bad”.

Disadvantages

The biggest disadvantage for the Studio Chill has to be higher levels of motion transfer, where we measured 27% higher levels of motion transfer. This mattress also has a slightly thinner comfort layer (0.2″ less than average) and also slightly longer than average off-gassing (6 days total).

Cooling Test

The Leesa Studio Chill has excellent cooling performance. During our tests, I felt no significant level of heat retention around my body.

Baseline Temp.

74.3° F

Max Temp.

89.5° F

Ending Temp.

78.4° F

The mattress utilizes a hybrid design and is equipped with a cooling cover. The pocketed coils provide ample airflow to the mattress, while the cooling cover helps to create a cooler sleeping surface.

Max Temp.

Ending Temp

Leesa Studio Chill After Cooling Test

  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temp of 89.5° F. After getting off the mattress the temperature declined by 5.7° from minutes 0 to 1, which is 1.14° cooler than average.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Leesa Studio Chill Heat Dissipation Chart
Leesa Studio Chill Heat Dissipation Chart

From minutes 0 to 5 the decline was 11.1°, which is 4.08° cooler than average. Given the price point, the cooling performance is quite impressive. Overall, I expect a majority of sleepers will be more than happy with the level of cooling.

Sinkage Test

The Leesa Studio Chill has a moderate level of sinkage. In our tests, we measured a sinkage depth of 2.26”. This is 0.09” more sinkage than the average of 2.17”.

Sinkage Depth

2.26″

Sinkage Feel

Moderate

The mattress creates a moderate level of body contouring hug. It’s not as dramatic and exacting as a thicker memory foam comfort layer would create, but it is certainly more significant than most other poly foam mattresses we’ve tested.

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Winkbed Soft Sinkage Test X

The Studio Chill uses 1.25” of copper memory foam. It’s this layer that creates the more significant level of body contouring hug. However, it’s 1.25” of a total 4.0” foam comfort layer.

The 1.5” quilted cover and 1.25” poly foam layer in the core balance out the overall feel of the foam layers. This is what ultimately creates the more moderate level of body contouring hug that we experience.

8.3

Motion Transfer Test

The Leesa Studio Chill has a high level of motion transfer. In our tests, we measured an acceleration range of 11.64 m/s². This is 37.1% more motion transfer than the average of 8.49 m/s².

Max. Acceleration

4.84 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-6.80 m/s²

Accel. Range

11.64 m/s²

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

The combination of medium-firm feel, highly responsive materials, densely packed quilted cover, and 8.0” pocketed coil base are all working together to create the higher motion we measured.

In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion spikes from 0 to 0.20 seconds. By 0.84 seconds we return to near-zero energy levels.

Leesa Studio Chill Motion Transfer Chart

Neither the spikes nor the motion duration paints a pretty picture. Sleepers who are sensitive to motion may find this level of motion to simply be too much.

10

Response Test

The Leesa Studio Chill is a mixed bag when it comes to material response. We conduct two material responsiveness tests, a mostly recovered test and a fully recovered test.

Mostly Recovered

0.2 sec.

Complete Recovery

2.0 sec.

The Studio Chill had no issues with the mostly recovered test, with materials rebounding back to shape within 0.2 seconds. That is effectively instant.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

However, the full material recovery took a full 2.0 seconds. This is significantly slower than the average of 0.85 seconds.

While the coils and bulk of the foam layers rebound rapidly, the 1.25” memory foam comfort layer has a very traditional slow material recovery.

Sleepers who strongly dislike the feel of traditional memory foam may also find this feel doesn’t work for their body.

However, for many sleepers, I believe that the combination of other material layers and the mostly recovered speed of 0.2 seconds will outweigh the memory foams slowness.

Bounce Test

The Leesa Studio Chill has a moderate level of bounce. In our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 8.4”. This is 1.26” less bounce than the average of 9.66”. When it comes to bounce I want to see 8-12”.

Max. Depth

4.73″

Max. Rebound

3.67″

Total Bounce

8.40″

At that range, we can experience the benefits of more bounce (better sex and easier to move around), while keeping the negatives in check (higher motion transfer).

Max. Sinkage Depth

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

At 8.40” the Studio Chill is right in the sweet spot. I expect this level of bounce will be acceptable for most sleepers

9.9

Edge Support Test

The Leesa Studio Chill has excellent edge support for both sitting and lying. In our sitting edge support tests, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 3.25”.

Max Sinkage

3.25″

Lying Support

Excellent

This is 0.85” less sinkage than the average of 4.10”. When it comes to edge sinkage compression I want to see 4.0” or less. Suffice it to say, the Studio Chill surpassed that benchmark with ease.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Lying edge support was equally as impressive. I felt fully supported in all sleeping positions even when lying directly on the edge of the mattress.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

The Studio Chill seems to use the same spring coil unit that the more expensive Oasis Chill, Sapira Chill, and Legend Chill all use. This coil unit has 2 rows of reinforced edge support coils. Those coils are having a significant positive impact on edge support performance.

9.7

Sex Test

The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.

These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce60%9.6Moderate
Edge Support20%9.9Excellent
Noise10%10Minimal
Pressure Relief5%9.5Excellent
Cooling5%9.5Excellent

For the Leesa Studio Chill, these individual factors generated a sex score of 9.7.

Leesa Studio Chill Edge Sitting
Leesa Studio Chill Edge Sitting

This mattress has a moderate level of bounce and excellent edge support. These two factors are the most critical for good edge support.

It is also quiet, has good pressure relief, and good cooling. The pocketed coil base is a vital part of the Leesa Studio’s success in this category. Despite being offered at a lower cost, the pocketed coils help contribute to high scores in this category.

9.5

Pressure Relief Test

The Leesa Studio Chill has excellent pressure relief. In our tests, I felt no significant level of pressure point build-up.

Comfort Layer

4.0″

Support Layer

8.0″

The mattress uses a 4.0” comfort layer consisting of 1.5” of quilted foam, 1.25” of copper memory foam, and 1.25” of poly foam. This is a little less than the average 4.2” comfort layer, based on all of our tests to date.

Leesa Studio Chill Sinkage
Leesa Studio Chill Sinkage

However, the foams look and feel high quality. The 1.25” copper memory foam layer in particular is doing much of the heavy lifting for pressure relief.

The foam creates a moderate level of body contouring hug without being too excessive or creating a stuck feeling. Overall, I am impressed with the level of pressure relief performance, particularly at this price point.

9.5

Off-Gassing Test

Off-gassing on the Leesa Studio Chill was strong right out of the box. The odor lingered for a full 6 days before fully dissipating.

Initial Smell Strength

Off-Gassing Period

This is one day longer than the 5-day average for off-gassing across all mattresses tested to date.

Company

The company score takes a look at factors that may influence your experience with the mattress.

Factors include length of the trial period, warranty, shipping / return costs, and country of origin.

Company FactorFactor WeightScoreData
Trial Period25%9.0100 nights
Warranty25%1010 years
Shipping25%10$0
Returns25%10$0

For Leesa, these individual terms and conditions generated a company score of 9.8.

Leesa offers a trial period of 100 nights, which is a bit shorter than the 164-night average for a trial period. It also comes with a 10-year warranty.

Of the 190+ mattresses we’ve tested to date, 27% have lifetime warranties. The average of the other 73% of mattresses is 14 years. Compared to this date, the Leesa warranty is shorter than average on all accounts.

How firm is Leesa Studio Chill?

The Leesa Studio Chill has a medium-firm feel and a firmness rating of 6 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm.

Support & Sleeping Positions

The Leesa Studio Chill has excellent support. In our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions.

The mattress uses an 8.0” pocketed coil unit as the support layer. This is slightly thicker than the average support layer, which is 7.7”, based on all of our tests to date.

Leesa Studio Chill
Leesa Studio Chill

The Studio Chill seems to use the same pocketed coil unit that is used on the more expensive Leesa Oasis Chill, Sapira Chill, and Legend Chill. This coil unit is a zoned unit, meaning it creates more support where your body specifically needs it (IE, where you weigh more).

There are 3 individual zones—1,032 coils, and 2 rows of reinforced edge coils. When we consider the material specs, our tests, and our experiences on the mattress I am confident most sleepers will find more than enough support on the Studio Chill mattress.

Materials

The Leesa Studio Chill has 4 main layers to it. From top to bottom, these layers include:

  • 1.5″ quilted cover
  • 1.25″ copper memory foam
  • 1.25″ poly foam
  • 8.0″ pocketed coils

The Cover

The cover of this mattress is 1.75″ thick and with a quilted / tufted design. The actual fabric used on the cover is thin and breathable, but the tufted design holds the cover snugly against the core of the mattress.

Leesa Studio Chill Mattress Cover Close
Leesa Studio Chill Mattress Cover Close

The mattresses in the Leesa Chill collection all have the same quilted cover, infused with cooling fibers that are designed to improve overall cooling performance.

The sides of the cover have handles to make it easier to carry or rotate the mattress.

The Comfort Layer

Beyond the quilted cover are two layers of comfort foam. The top layer is a 1.25″ copper memory foam.

Leesa Studio Chill Squeezing Top Layers
Leesa Studio Chill Squeezing Top Layers

Copper-infused foams typically have better cooling performance compared to traditional foam. It is likely that this foam improves cooling on the Studio Chill as well.

Below the copper foam is a 1.25″ transitional poly foam. This poly foam helps transition weight from the comfort layer up top into the support layer below.

Key Differences

When we tested the Leesa Studio Chill mattress in our studio, we noted a few differences immediately from the specs noted on the Leesa website.

Our MattressLeesa Website
1.25″ copper memory foam1.0″ copper memory foam
1.25″ transitional poly foam1.0″ transitional poly foam
No support foam0.5″ support foam

It seems like they may have changed the design but haven’t updated the website yet. Either way, the overall thickness is consistent.

The Support Layer

The support layer of the Studio Chill is the same as other mattresses in the Chill lineup—an 8.0″ pocketed coil base.

Product Evolution

The Chill collection of mattresses from Leesa was launched in October 2023, which includes the Studio ChillOasis ChillSapira Chill, and Deluxe Chill.

The Chill line is essentially an improvement to the original Leesa StudioSapira, and Legend mattresses. The most significant difference between the Chill and original versions is the addition of the cooling cover.

Most other basic design elements and material types are consistent between the Chill and original mattress types.

Leesa Studio Chill Side Sleeping
Leesa Studio Chill Side Sleeping

I will add here that the name “Studio Chill” makes it sound like this mattress is an evolution of the original Leesa Studio mattress, launched in 2020, but in reality, this mattress feels like a new design altogether.

The Leesa Studio Chill has very little in common with the Leesa Studio, aside from the fact that both are budget-friendly. The Leesa Studio is an all-foam 10” mattress with a 4.0” comfort layer. Leesa Studio Chill is a 12” hybrid with a 6.0” comfort layer. In my view, these mattresses feel and perform significantly differently to the point I question why they share a similar model name.
