4/16/2025 Update – Helix has re-designed their entire mattress line, including the Sunset Luxe. The new line launched on 4/1 and our tests and photos below are based on the newest Helix Sunset Luxe version.

Best For
- Exceptional pressure relief with 13.5″ total mattress thickness
- Great edge support when sitting / lying near the edge of the mattress
- Soft feel, great for side sleepers
Considerations
- Slower material response time, largely due to the memory foam top layer
- Deep sinkage may not be ideal for heavier back or stomach sleepers
- Comes with a lifetime warranty
Our Verdict
The Helix Sunset Luxe mattress is a 13.5″ hybrid mattress made of a variety of foam types with a pocketed coil base. It comes standard with a thin, Tencel cover but also has the option to upgrade to a cooling pillow-top cover (for an additional $299).
The Helix Sunset Luxe is available in a single firmness level — soft. This firmness is softer than many other mattresses we test (6 out of 10 firmness is the most common). But that being said, a soft feel can be an attractive choice, especially for side sleepers of most body weights or lighter-weighted sleepers.
This mattress has deep sinkage and moderate levels of bounce. The mattress we tested had the thin Tencel cover, but if you opt for the pillow-top version, you can expect even deeper contour on this mattress (paired with better cooling as well).
In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 9.10, ranking the mattress in the top 16% of all mattresses tested to date.
The Helix Sunset Luxe is $1,899 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 32% more expensive than average. While this price tag is more than we typically see, you’re also getting a mattress quality that is better than what we typically sell (average performance score is 8.53).

How is Helix Sunset Luxe Different?
The Helix Sunset Luxe is a 13.5″ hybrid mattress with an overall performance level that is better than the average mattress, scoring in the top 16% of all mattresses tested to date. This price is slightly more than average, 32% more than the average hybrid mattress we have tested.

Advantages
Advantages of the Helix Sunset Luxe include better cooling performance and lower levels of motion transfer, 25% less than average. Edge support is fantastic for sitting / lying near the edge as well.
The Sunset Luxe has a comfort layer that is 4.5″ thick and a total thickness of 13.5″, 1.4″ thicker than the average mattress thickness (12.1″). The extra thickness contributes to the overall pressure relief dynamic, which earned a score of 10/10, significantly higher than the average (8.6).
Neutral Factors
This mattress has deep sinkage and a moderate level of bounce. Sex performance is also a bit of a neutral factor seeing that this mattress scored a perfectly average score of 8.3, identical to the average score comparing over 300+ mattresses tested to date.
Disadvantages
The Sunset Luxe does have a slower material response time, nearly 50% slower than average. This mattress also has a shorter trial period, only 100 nights compared to the average of 176 night.
Cooling Test
The Helix Sunset Luxe has excellent cooling. During our tests, I did not feel any significant level of heat retention around my body.
Baseline Temp.
78.1° F
Max. Temp.
90.3° F
Ending Temp.
79.9° F
The mattress breathed well and the surface maintained a reasonable temperature. The Sunset Luxe uses a proven hybrid design with high-performance foams at every level.
The pocketed coils bring plenty of airflow into the mattress. In addition, the mattress is equipped with a robust comfort layer of poly foam and memory foam. Each of those layers is clearly doing a nice job at avoiding excessive heat retention.
Max. Temp.

Ending Temp.

- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
This mattress is available with an optional cooling cover. The mattress we tested did not include the cooling cover. If you are someone who needs the best cooling performance then it’s absolutely worth upgrading.
We tested the GlacioTex cooling cover on the Helix Midnight Luxe and found a notable improvement in cooling performance (by a full point in our tests).
In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 90.3° F. This is 0.5° more than the average of 89.8° F, based on all of our tests to date.
Heat Dissipation Over Time

After getting off the mattress, the temperature declined by 5.5° from minutes 0 to 1, which is 0.9° cooler than the average 0 to 1-minute decline of 4.6°.
When we consider the combination of objective data, my subjective experiences, and an analysis of the materials, I’m confident in my view that cooling is excellent.
Sinkage Test
The Helix Sunset Luxe has deep sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 2.44″. This is 0.27″ more sinkage than the average sinkage depth of 2.17″, based on all of our tests to date.
Sinkage Depth
2.44″
Sinkage Feel
Deep
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

The mattress creates a balanced body contouring hug, despite the fact it also creates deeper than average sinkage. While the body does sink deeper, the mattress doesn’t create an overly dramatic hug.
The thick euro top layer, in combination with the poly foam layers, help to balance out the total feel of the mattress. This comfort layer combination creates a less polarizing hug and a less exacting contour around the body.
Even so, this is very much a soft mattress with deeper sinkage. You’ll need to prefer that soft feel and deep sinkage to find this mattress comfortable.
Motion Transfer Test
The Helix Sunset Luxe has a very low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 6.56 m/s². This is 25% less motion transfer than the average of 8.70 m/s².
Max. Acceleration
3.16 m/s²
Min. Acceleration
-3.40 m/s²
Accel. Range
6.56 m/s²
The Sunset Luxe benefits greatly from the softer feel and deep sinkage, both of which are suppressing bounce. In addition, the mattress is equipped with a memory foam with a density of 4.0 PCF.
The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.
Higher-density foams are better at absorbing and dispersing energy. This combination of denser memory foam, soft feel, deep sinkage, and lower-than-average bounce creates the right conditions to create lower motion transfer.
In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.14 seconds.

Motion drops off significantly thereafter and by 0.86 seconds we return to near-zero levels of energy.
While the motion duration was a bit longer than is ideal, the motion intensity is well below average and as a result, I do not expect motion transfer will be an issue for most sleepers.
Response Test
The Helix Sunset Luxe is a mixed bag for material responsiveness, with a moderate mostly recovered response time and a very slow fully recovered response time.
Mostly Recovered
0.6 sec.
Fully Recovered
2.0 sec.
In our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.6 seconds, which is 0.17 seconds slower than the average of 0.43 seconds, based on all of our tests to date.
In our fully recovered responsiveness test, we measured a recovery speed of 2.0 seconds, which is 1.01 seconds slower than the average of 0.99 seconds.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
Similar to other Helix mattresses, most of the materials spring back to shape quickly. However, the 4.0 PCF memory foam is a slower-responding foam and takes a couple of moments to fully reform back to its original shape.
In addition, the deeper sinkage and softer feel are also contributing factors to the slower response, as both of those simply means there is more compression of the foam materials, which increases their recovery time.
The combination of slower response for full recovery, deeper sinkage, and softer feel do make this mattress modestly more difficult to move around on, especially compared to mattresses that have a medium-firm or firm feel.
Bounce Test
The Helix Sunset Luxe has a moderate level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 8.22″. This is 1.00″ less bounce than the average of 9.22″, based on all of our tests to date.
Max. Depth
4.98″
Max. Rebound
3.24″
Total Bounce
8.22″
A softer feel, deeper sinkage, and higher density memory foam in the core of the mattress are all contributing to the lower bounce. Each of these attributes serve to lower bounce.
Max. Sinkage Depth

Max. Bounce Height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
When combined together, they have a significant impact, creating a below-average level of bounce.
The lower-than-average bounce has a negative impact on ease of movement and sex performance. However, it’s also a significant reason for the lower motion transfer.
Edge Support Test
The Helix Sunset Luxe has excellent sitting edge support and outstanding lying edge support.
Max. Sinkage
3.25″
Lying Support
Outstanding
In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 3.25″. This is 0.77″ less sitting sinkage than the average of 4.02″, based on all of our tests to date. Lying edge support was even more impressive.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

While lying directly on the edge of the mattress, I felt that the support was outstanding in all sleeping positions.
Like all Helix Luxe and Elite mattresses, the Sunset Luxe is equipped with 2 rows of reinforced coils that run along the entire perimeter of the mattress.
These coils are having a huge impact on edge support performance. In addition, the total 13.5” profile height, high-quality foams, and super dense 4.0 PCF memory foam all help to create a more robust edge.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

Overall, I am really impressed with the level of edge support performance. Soft mattresses often struggle with edge support, but that’s not what we measured or experienced with the Sunset Luxe.
The mattress edge created ample support for both sitting and lying and I don’t expect it will be an issue for most sleepers.
Sex Test
The Helix Sunset Luxe has good sex performance. On the positive side, noise is minimal, pressure relief is outstanding, and both cooling and edge support are excellent.

Edge support measured at just 3.25” of sitting edge sinkage, which is considerably better than average. That more robust edge helps to extend the sexable surface area of the mattress.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Bounce | 65% | 7.6 | Moderate |
Edge Support | 20% | 9.7 | Excellent |
Noise | 5% | 10 | Minimal |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 10 | Outstanding |
Cooling | 5% | 9.0 | Excellent |
The one area the mattress is weak for sex is bounce. At just 8.22” of bounce, the Sunset Luxe has notably less bounce than average.
That lower bounce simply makes it more strenuous and difficult to have sex on the mattress. Lower bounce is a common attribute among most soft mattresses, so this is less an issue with Sunset Luxe specifically and more a problem with soft mattresses in general.
Pressure Relief Test
The Helix Sunset Luxe has an outstanding level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt no pressure points on my body. The mattress is incredibly comfortable and creates a balanced hug around the body with a slightly deeper-than-average sinkage.
Comfort Layer
4.5″
Support Layer
9.0″
The mattress is equipped with 4.5″ of comfort material, which is 0.33″ more comfort material than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.17″, based on all of our tests to date.
Having a thicker-than-average comfort layer is ideal, but in addition, the foam quality is also especially impressive.

The comfort foams mostly range from a 1.5-1.8 PCF. However, we also have the super dense 4.0 PCF memory foam in the core.
A denser foam can help create better longevity and durability by resisting forming body impressions and sagging. This 4.0 PCF memory foam is a newly formulated foam from Helix and is incredibly impressive. It feels fantastic both on hand and in the body.
In our pressure mapping tests, we measured a max PSI of 0.66. This is well below the high-pressure threshold of 2.0 PSI.
Pressure Map – Side Sleepers

Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
---|---|---|
Side Sleepers | 0.13 | 0.56 |
Pressure Map – Back Sleepers

Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
---|---|---|
Back Sleepers | 0.08 | 0.52 |
Pressure Map – Stomach Sleepers

Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
---|---|---|
Stomach Sleepers | 0.08 | 0.66 |
When I consider our objective pressure mapping tests, material thickness, material quality, and my subjective experience on the mattress, I’m confident most sleepers will find the pressure relief to be outstanding.
Off-Gassing Test
The Helix Sunset Luxe had a strong smell upon the initial unboxing. The mattress smelled for 5 days. This is 1.5 days shorter than the average smell duration of 6.5 days.

Company
Helix has an excellent company score with consumer-friendly terms and conditions. The mattress includes a 100-night trial period and a lifetime warranty. Shipping and returns are both free as well.
Company Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Data |
---|---|---|---|
Trial Period | 15% | 8.0 | 100 nights |

Shipping | 5% | 10 | $0 |
Returns | 20% | 10 | $0 |
Trust | 50% | 10 | Outstanding |
Country of Origin | 0% | USA |
Comparing 98+ brands tested to date, the average trial period is 176 nights, 76 nights more than Helix offers. Helix also offers a lifetime warranty, an advantage only offered by 39% of all mattresses we test.

Helix has been around since 2015 and based on my experiences with them and feedback from my readers over the years they are a brand that I have a high degree of trust with.
All Helix mattresses are made in the US.
How firm is Helix Sunset Luxe?
The Helix Sunset Luxe is available in a single firmness, 4 out of 10, which gives the mattress a soft feel.

A mattress with this firmness is generally best suited for lighter-weighted sleepers or those who sleep on their side and enjoy a deeper contour and softness.
Support & Sleeping Positions
Support on the Helix Sunset Luxe is excellent. During our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions, but especially while lying on my side.
Ultimately, this is a soft mattress and while it can work for back and stomach sleeping, it’s definitely best suited to the needs of side sleepers.

The mattress is equipped with a 9.0″ support layer. This is 1.08″ thicker than the average support layer thickness of 7.92″, based on all of our tests to date.
In addition, we have a thicker-than-average comfort layer, high-quality foams, and outstanding pressure relief.
The pressure relief performance ensures you can lie in the same position for an extended period of time, while the robust support layers ensure the mattress creates full support and a neutral spinal alignment.
Check out the table below to see the sleeper weights and sleeping positions that would be best suited for this mattress.
Sleeper Weight | Stomach Sleeper | Side Sleeper | Back Sleeper |
---|---|---|---|
Under 150 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
150-250 lbs. | Maybe | Yes | Maybe |
250-300 lbs. | No | Yes | No |
The Sunset Luxe uses a zoned pocketed coil unit, which creates more support in the middle of the mattress. This helps improve support for most sleepers, as the middle of the mattress is where sagging and a lack of support can create issues, especially over time.
The biggest thing to know about the Sunset Luxe is simply the soft feel and deep sinkage. The feel and sinkage depth make this mattress an ideal choice for side sleepers, but not as great of a choice for back or stomach sleepers.
Based on all of my tests to date, an analysis of the materials, and my subjective experiences, I’m confident most sleepers (but especially side sleepers) will find support on the Helix Sunset Luxe is excellent.

The Cover
The Helix Sunset Luxe has a standard cover made of Tencel with a soft and breathable feel. There are four side handles for rotating or transporting the mattress, as needed.

You can also upgrade to the GlacioTex cooling cover. The cooling cover contains cooling fibers that help regulate body temperature when you’re lying on the mattress. Regardless of mattress size, upgrading to the cooling cover costs $199.
Although the mattress we tested did not have include it, the Helix Luxe series does have the option to include graphite cooling ribbons (aka: CoolForce), designed to pull heat away from the body. These ribbons are only available if you also upgrade to the GlacioTex cooling cover, which we discussed above.
The addition of the cooling cover and cooling ribbons would add an additional $299 to the total mattress cost. For reference, the Sunset Luxe mattress we tested did not have the GlacioTex cooling cover nor the graphite cooling ribbons and earned a cooling score of 9/10.
For reference, the Midnight Luxe, mentioned above, did have the cooling cover (but no graphite cooling ribbons) and earned a cooling score of 10/10.
The Comfort Layer
The comfort layer is 4.5″ thick and made of three separate foam layers.
Beneath the plush cover, there is a 1.0″ memory foam (gray foam) that helps provide comfort and contour. This memory foam is newer to Helix (only launching in April 2025) and the foam is extremely high quality.
This foam is rated at 4.0 PCF, where the standard is usually 2-3 PCF. The result is a memory foam with exceptional performance and durability to last for many years to come.
Beneath the memory foam are two layers of poly foam, each 1.0″ thick with a density of 1.8 PCF and 1.5 PCF. These foams are partly for comfort and partly for transitional support to ease sleepers into the coils below.

Helix also offers an optional support layer that you can add, the ErgoAlign support layer. This layer is designed to support spinal alignment, especially along the midsection.

This layer sits directly below the cover and is designed as a supportive foam that helps to reinforce support along the mid-section, thereby allowing less sinkage in the middle of the mattress.
I will say, this layer is quite firm and will not be right for all sleepers. We’ve already heard from some of our readers / viewers who purchased this optional foam upgrade that it made their mattress way too firm, creating an uncomfortable support dynamic.
However, if you really struggle with discomfort caused by too much sinkage in the middle of your mattress then adding this layer can help.
This optional layer costs an additional $199 and is available in the Core, Luxe. On the mattresses within the Elite collection, this layer comes standard.
The Support Layer
The support layer is around 9.0″ thick and made of an 8.0″ zoned pocketed coil base followed by a 0.75″ support foam.
The coils are designed to move independently of each other, with targeted zones that place stronger coils in areas where there is stronger pressure (ie: midsection).

The support foam beneath the coils is high-density and provides a supportive base that all other layers are loaded onto.
Product Evolution
Helix as a brand launched in 2015 with a handful of mattresses. The Helix Sunset Luxe, was added to the collection in 2020 and the Helix Sunset Elite launched in May of 2024.
Our first test of the Helix Sunset Luxe was in 2025, but we do have a record of notable changes made within the Helix lineup.
- 2020 – New Collections: In 2020, Helix rebranded its mattress lineup to fit into two collections—Core or Luxe, offering options for sleepers who wanted a plusher cover and a more luxurious feel.
- 2024 – New Collections: In 2024, the Elite Collection was released, offering an even more high-end option for sleepers wanting the best Helix can offer. While this collection boasts robust comfort dynamics, it also has a higher price tag ($2999) and has a lower performance than the Luxe collection in many cases (ie: Helix Midnight Luxe – 9.46, Helix Midnight Elite – 9.24).
- 2025 – New Foam Formulation: In 2025, Helix reformulated the primary comfort foam used in their Luxe and Elite mattresses. Luxe mattresses now use a 3.5-4.0 PCF memory or poly foam, while Elite mattresses use those same 3.5-4.0 PCF foams in addition to a layer of 7.0 PCF memory foam.
