4/1/2025 Update – Helix has re-designed their entire mattress line, including the Midnight Luxe. The new line launched on 4/1 and our tests and photos below are based on the newest Helix Midnight Luxe version.

Best For
- Incredibly high performance, ranks among top 2% of all mattresses tested to date
- Exceptional pressure relief with 4.0 PCF memory foam
- Fantastic edge support—35% less sinkage when seated at the edge
Considerations
- Higher density memory foam generates the right conditions for lower bounce and slower material response
- Low bounce can be less ideal for good sex performance
- Price is 34% more than the average hybrid
Our Verdict
The Helix Midnight Luxe mattress is a 14″ hybrid mattress made of memory foam, poly foam, and a pocketed coil support system. It has a foam-filled cover that gives the mattress more of a luxury feel compared to the standard Helix Midnight.
The Helix Midnight Luxe is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm, 6 out of 10 on where firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm.
This mattress has moderate sinkage and low levels of bounce. This gives the mattress a balanced feel. The layer of memory foam helps to reduce motion transfer, which also limits bounce.
In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 9.46, ranking the mattress in the top 2% of all mattresses tested to date.
The Helix Midnight Luxe is $1,899 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 32% more expensive than average. Although we don’t love to see a price over the average, given the exceptional performance of the Midnight Luxe, sleepers really do get what they pay for with this mattress.

How is Helix Midnight Luxe Different?
The Helix Midnight Luxe is a 14″ hybrid mattress with an overall performance level that is significantly better than average as well as a price tag that is also higher, 34% more than the average hybrid.
Excluding the Helix Plus collection (for plus-sized sleepers), the Helix Midnight Luxe is the highest-scoring Helix mattress we’ve tested to date.

Advantages
Specific advantages to this mattress include exceptional cooling performance, lower levels of motion transfer, and fantastic edge support. Both when sitting or lying at or near the edge of the mattress, the Midnight Luxe has fantastic performance, one of the best mattresses for edge support that we’ve ever tested.
Pressure relief is outstanding and the mattress has a robust 5.0″ comfort layer, which is 0.8″ thicker than average.
Neutral Factors
This mattress has moderate levels of sinkage and low levels of bounce, giving the mattress a bit of a restrained feel. The bounce is 27% less than the average bounce level.
Off-gassing duration is also around average.
Disadvantages
The Midnight Luxe does have a slower material response time, something we also noticed on the Helix Midnight, but it’s not a huge difference. In the case of the Luxe, the time it took the mattress to completely recover was 0.2 seconds longer than average.
Because of the lower bounce levels, the sex score also took a dip, making it worse than average.
The last disadvantage to mention is the shorter trial period, only 100 nights where 176 nights is the average length we’ve seen, comparing over 330+ mattresses tested to date.
Cooling Test
The Helix Midnight Luxe has outstanding cooling. During our tests, I did not feel any significant level of heat retention on my body.
Baseline Temp.
76.1° F
Max. Temp.
89.3° F
Ending Temp.
80.0° F
The mattress has several material and design choices that help it stay cooler. First and foremost, it has an optional cooling cover and that’s the cover we had on our mattress.
This cover uses phase change materials to create a notably cool-to-the-touch feel. It loses some of that cooling feel the longer you lie on it, but even at the end of our cooling tests the cover still had a slightly cool feel to it.
Max. Temp.

Ending Temp.

- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
In addition, we have high-performance foams that all breathe well and avoid excess heat retention. Lastly, the pocketed coil unit helps to bring air into the mattress, ensuring heat isn’t building in the base layers.
In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 89.3° F. This is 0.5° less than the average of 89.8° F, based on all of our tests to date.
After getting off the mattress the temperature declined by 6.1° from minutes 0 to 1, which is 1.5° better than the average 0 to 1 minute decline of 4.6°.
Heat Dissipation Over Time

When we consider the combination of objective data, my subjective experiences, and an analysis of the materials, I’m confident in my view that cooling is excellent.
One quick final note – the Midnight Luxe is also available with optional “Cooling Ribbons”. Unfortunately, our mattress did not include these cooling ribbons. I expect they would have a positive impact on cooling, nevertheless, cooling is already exceptionally good, so add those may be a bit overkill for many sleepers.
Sinkage Test
The Helix Midnight Luxe has moderate sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 2.03″.
Sinkage Depth
2.03″
Sinkage Feel
Moderate
This is 0.14″ less sinkage than the average sinkage depth of 2.17″, based on all of our tests to date. The mattress creates a balanced body contouring hug and uses a mix of memory foam and poly foam within the comfort layer.
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

The memory foam layer creates a really nice level of body contouring hug and pressure relief, without being feeling overly enveloping.
You can feel the memory foam within the core slowly contouring to your body’s shape, while the poly foam layers and euro top help to balance the total comfort dynamic.
Overall, I found the comfort dynamic to be balanced, even, and non-polarizing. It’s the type of mattress feel that most sleepers will enjoy.
Motion Transfer Test
The Helix Midnight Luxe has a very low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 5.76 m/s². This is 34% less motion transfer than the average of 8.73 m/s².
Max. Acceleration
2.66 m/s²
Min. Acceleration
-3.10 m/s²
Accel. Range
5.76 m/s²
The Midnight Luxe does an amazing job at managing motion transfer primarily via the 2.0” memory foam layer. This is a new foam formulation that Helix launched in 2025 in all of their 2025 Luxe models.
It’s an incredibly high-performance memory foam that has slower material responsiveness, reduces bounce, and has a foam density of 4.0 PCF. This combination of factors allows it to massively reduce motion.
The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.
In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.14 seconds. Motion steps down notably thereafter and by 0.78 seconds we’ve returned to near-zero levels of energy.

While the motion duration persisted for a bit longer than expected, it isn’t at a level I’m concerned about. Ultimately, the significantly lower-than-average motion intensity ensures that motion transfer is kept in check. As a result, I don’t expect motion will be an issue for most sleepers.
Response Test
The Helix Midnight Luxe is a mixed bag for material responsiveness, with a fast mostly recovered response time and a moderate fully recovered response time.
Mostly Recovered
0.4 sec.
Fully Recovered
1.2 sec.
In our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.4 seconds, which is 0.03 seconds faster than the average of 0.43 seconds, based on all of our tests to date.
In our fully recovered responsiveness test, we measured a recovery speed of 1.2 seconds, which is 0.22 seconds slower than the average of 0.98 seconds.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
The responsiveness story on the Midnight Luxe is a tale of two foams. On one hand, we have highly responsive poly foam layers. Those layers recover to their original shape quickly after being compressed.
On the other hand, we have the new Helix memory foam, which is a 4.0 PCF foam and takes a couple of moments to fully recover to its original size after it has been compressed.
As a result, this slower responsiveness memory foam slows down the total material responsiveness on the mattress a bit. To be fair, it’s not so slow that I would describe it as slow. It’s still a moderate recovery speed.
Even so, it is fair to say it isn’t as fast as the poly foams, nor was it faster than average. All that said, if you are super sensitive to slower responsiveness foams this could be something you’ll notice, but for most sleepers I expect it to be a non-issue.
Bounce Test
The Helix Midnight Luxe has a low level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 6.74″. This is 2.49″ less bounce than the average of 9.23″, based on all of our tests to date.
Max. Depth
3.94″
Max. Rebound
2.80″
Total Bounce
6.74″
Much like with our responsiveness test, the star of the show is the Helix memory foam.
The higher 4.0 PCF density of the foam, in combination with its slower responsiveness, creates the right conditions to keep bounce substantially below average.
Max. Sinkage Depth

Max. Bounce Height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
The lower bounce is a major reason why the mattress creates lower motion transfer. However, that lower bounce is also a major detractor to sex performance on the mattress, so there are definitely pros and cons to consider when it comes to bounce.
Edge Support Test
The Helix Midnight Luxe has outstanding sitting edge support and outstanding lying edge support.
Max. Sinkage
2.75″
Lying Support
Outstanding
In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 2.75″. This is 1.28″ less sitting sinkage than the average of 4.03″, based on all of our tests to date.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Even while sitting on the absolute edge I was fully supported and there was no collapse of materials. At just 2.75” it’s incredibly impressive and tied for 14th out of the 318 mattresses we’ve tested to date for sitting edge support.
Lying edge support was equally good. While lying directly on the edge of the mattress, I felt that the support was outstanding in all sleeping positions.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

The mattress is equipped with two rows of reinforced coils that run along the entire perimeter of the mattress, including the head and foot.
These coils, in combination with the medium-firm feel, thicker-than-average 14” profile, and high-performance foams, work together to deliver outstanding edge support for both sitting and lying.
Sex Test
The Helix Midnight Luxe has fair sex performance. On the positive side, the mattress has perfect scores across the board in 4 out of our 5 sex testing categories, including minimal noise, outstanding pressure relief, cooling, and edge support.

With just 2.75” of sitting edge sinkage the mattress edge is incredibly robust and capable of being a major part of any dance without pants.
I cannot emphasize how impressive the perfect scores in 4 out of the 5 categories is. It’s quite rare to even score 2 perfect scores, let alone 4.
The only weak spot on the mattress is bounce, which we measured at 6.74”. This is considerably below average. The lower bounce is coming from the 2.0” memory foam layer.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Bounce | 65% | 6.7 | Low |
Edge Support | 20% | 10 | Outstanding |
Noise | 5% | 10 | Minimal |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 10 | Outstanding |
Cooling | 5% | 10 | Outstanding |
When it comes to sex performance, bounce is by far the most critical factor. More bounce is almost always better than less bounce.
While other performance attributes were fantastic, creating a comfortable and effective sex surface, the lower bounce makes sex more strenuous and more difficult.
Pressure Relief Test
The Helix Midnight Luxe has an outstanding level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt no significant level of pressure points on my body. To the contrary, the mattress is exceedingly comfortable and a delight to lie on.
Comfort Layer
5.0″
Support Layer
9.0″
The mattress is equipped with 5.0″ of comfort material, which is 0.82″ more comfort material than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.18″, based on all of our tests to date.
Beyond the fact that the comfort layer is thicker than average, it’s also clear it’s considerably better foam in terms of quality. The 2.0” memory foam layer, in particular, has a PCF (pounds per cubic foot) of 4.0.
This is a measure of how dense the foam is or otherwise put, how much foam is actually in any given foam layer. Higher-density foams are typically higher quality and typically last longer, reduce sagging, and reduce body impressions.
A PCF of 2.0-3.0 is more typical, so seeing a full 2.0” of comfort foam at a 4.0 PCF is fantastic.

All of the comfort foam layers look great and feel great on both the body and in-hand.
In our objective pressure mapping tests, we measured a max PSI of 0.87, which is considerably below the high-pressure benchmark we want to avoid, which is a 2.0 PSI.
Pressure Map – Side Sleepers

Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
---|---|---|
Side Sleepers | 0.12 | 0.81 |
Pressure Map – Back Sleepers

Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
---|---|---|
Back Sleepers | 0.08 | 0.48 |
Pressure Map – Stomach Sleepers

Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
---|---|---|
Stomach Sleepers | 0.10 | 0.87 |
Additionally, the average PSI was notably impressive also, coming in at 0.08 (back), 0.12 (side), and 0.10 (stomach) across our sleeping positions. All 3 sleeping position tests were considerably better than the average PSI by position, as shown in the table below.
PSI (Midnight Luxe) | PSI (average) | |
---|---|---|
Side Sleepers | 0.12 | 0.19 |
Back Sleepers | 0.08 | 0.11 |
Stomach Sleepers | 0.10 | 0.12 |
When I consider our objective pressure mapping tests, material thickness, material quality, and my subjective experience on the mattress, I’m confident most sleepers will find the pressure relief to be outstanding.
Off-Gassing Test
The Helix Midnight Luxe had a moderate smell upon the initial unboxing. The mattress smelled for 7 days.
Initial Smell Strength
Moderate
Off-Gassing Period
7 days
This is 0.5 days longer than the average smell duration of 6.5 days. The mattress has a fairly typical memory foam and poly foam type of smell.

Company
Helix has an excellent company score with consumer-friendly terms and conditions. The mattress includes a 100-night trial period and a lifetime warranty. Shipping and returns are both free as well.
Company Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Data |
---|---|---|---|
Trial Period | 15% | 8.0 | 100 nights |

Shipping | 5% | 10 | $0 |
Returns | 20% | 10 | $0 |
Trust | 50% | 10 | Outstanding |
Country of Origin | 0% | USA |
Comparing 98+ brands tested to date, the average trial period is 176 nights, 76 nights more than Helix offers. Helix also offers a lifetime warranty, an advantage only offered by 39% of all mattresses we test.

Helix has been around since 2015 and based on my experiences with them and feedback from my readers over the years they are a brand that I have a high degree of trust with.
All Helix mattresses are made in the US.
How firm is Helix Midnight Luxe?
The Helix Midnight Luxe comes in a single firmness, 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, which creates a medium-firm feel.

A mattress with this firmness is generally suitable for a wide range of sleepers and preferences.
Support & Sleeping Positions
Support on the Helix Midnight Luxe is outstanding. During our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions. The mattress is equipped with a 9.0″ support layer.
This is 1.1″ thicker than the average support layer thickness of 7.9″, based on all of our tests to date.

The mattress is equipped with a zoned pocketed coil unit. The lumbar region of the mattress has more supportive coils that help to ensure the mattress creates sufficient support and better spinal alignment.
In addition, this type of zoned coil unit can help reduce sagging and body impressions. Beyond the support materials, which all appear to be robust and highly supportive, the mattress is equipped with a 5.0” comfort layer.
The 2.0” memory foam is a 4.0 PCF. That higher density, in combination with the thicker-than-average comfort layer, will greatly resist body impressions and sagging.
Check out the table below to see the sleeper weights and sleeping positions that would be best suited for this mattress.
Sleeper Weight | Stomach Sleeper | Side Sleeper | Back Sleeper |
---|---|---|---|
Under 150 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
150-250 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
250-300 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
When mattress foams are able to maintain their shape, the total support dynamic on the mattress is able to deliver better performance. Lastly, the medium-firm feel is appropriate to the needs of most sleepers and body types.
When we look at the complete picture of support and comfort materials I am extremely pleased with what I see.
Based on all of my tests to date, an analysis of the materials, and my subjective experiences, I’m confident most sleepers will find support on the Helix Midnight Luxe is outstanding.

Helix divides its mattress collection into three tiers—Core (Standard), Luxe, and Elite. As you’d expect, higher tiers also have a higher price tag.
The Midnight is the most budget-friendly, the Midnight Luxe (this review) is a balance of great performance and still a reasonable price, and the Midnight Elite is the most expensive and highest-tier model.

The Luxe is designed to strike a balance between performance and price, making it a the most popular model that Helix offers.
Materials
The Helix Midnight Luxe is 14″ thick and contains a combination of foam types and zoned pocketed coils. From top to bottom, here is a full list of the materials used in this mattress:
- 2.00″ poly foam quilted cover
- 2.00″ memory foam (4.0 PCF)
- 1.00″ poly foam
- 8.00″ pocketed coils (zoned)
- 1.00″ support foam

The table below shows a more detailed look at the exact specifications of the materials used in the Midnight Luxe, according to the manufacturer.
Thickness | Layer Type | Density |
---|---|---|
1.0″ | Pillow Top | 1.5 PCF |
0.75″ | Gel Memory Foam | 1.8 PCF |
2.0″ | Memory Foam | 4.0 PCF |
1.0″ | Poly Foam | 1.8 PCF |
8.0″ | Pocketed Coils (Zoned) | N/A |
0.75″ | Support Foam | 1.5 PCF |
There are some discrepancies in how Helix measures materials and how materials were measured in the NapLap Studio. According to Helix, the Luxe is a 13.5″ mattress, but our measurements measured it at 14″ thick, 0.5″ thicker than expected.

The Cover
The Helix Midnight Luxe comes with a standard cover made of Tencel with a soft and breathable feel. There are four side handles for rotating or transporting the mattress, as needed.

The mattress we tested is a more advanced quilted cooling cover with GlacioTex technology. The cooling cover contains cooling fibers that help regulate body temperature when you’re lying on the mattress. Regardless of mattress size, upgrading to the cooling cover costs $199.
Although the mattress we tested did not have them, the Helix Luxe series does have the option to include graphite cooling ribbons (aka: CoolForce), designed to pull heat away from the body. These ribbons are only available if you also upgrade to the GlacioTex cooling cover, which we discussed above.
The addition of the cooling cover and cooling ribbons would add an additional $299 to the total mattress cost. For reference, the Midnight Luxe mattress we tested did have the GlacioTex cooling cover, but did not have the graphite cooling ribbons, yet it still earned a 10/10 for cooling performance.
The Comfort Layer
The comfort layer is 5.0″ thick and made of three layers of foam. Woven within the cover, we have a 2.0” poly foam (blue foam).
Beneath the plush cover, there is a 2.0″ memory foam (gray foam) that helps provide comfort and contour. As mentioned above, this memory foam is newer to Helix (only launching in April 2025) and the foam is extremely high quality.
This foam is rated at 4.0 PCF, where the standard is usually 2-3 PCF. The result is a memory foam with exceptional performance and durability to last for many years to come.

Lastly, at the bottom of the comfort layer, there is a 1.0″ transitional poly foam. The purpose of this foam is, simply, to help transition sleepers into the support layers below without harsh pressure points.
Helix also offers an optional support layer that you can add, the ErgoAlign support layer. This layer is designed to support spinal alignment, especially along the midsection.

This layer sits directly below the cover and is designed as a supportive foam that helps to reinforce support along the mid-section, thereby allowing less sinkage in the middle of the mattress.
I will say, this layer is quite firm and will not be right for all sleepers. We’ve already heard from some of our readers / viewers who purchased this optional foam upgrade that it made their mattress way too firm, creating an uncomfortable support dynamic.
However, if you really struggle with back pain caused by too much sinkage in the middle of your mattress then adding this layer can help.
This optional layer costs an additional $199 and is available in the Core, Luxe. On the mattresses within the Elite collection, this layer comes standard.
The Support Layer
The support layer is 9.0″ thick and made of an 8.0″ zoned pocketed coil base. Each of these coils are designed to move independently of each other, with targeted zones that place stronger coils in areas where there is stronger pressure (ie: midsection).

Beneath the coils is a 1.0″ high-density support foam base. This layer acts as the strong support that all other layers rely on.
Product Evolution
The Helix Midnight Luxe has undergone a series of changes over the years, but NapLab has been around for multiple iterations, continuing to test the newest version of this mattress.
Earlier versions of the Helix Midnight Luxe had slightly different materials but retained a consistent firmness and similar feel.
Here’s a comparison of the 2021 version compared to the 2022-2024 version.

For reference, here is another look at the current Helix Midnight material stack.

Check the table below for a side-by-side comparison of the 3 Helix Midnight Luxe versions we’ve tested over the years.
Specs | 2021 Version | 2022-2024 Version | 2025 Version |
---|---|---|---|
Overall Score | 9.34 | 9.14 | 9.46 |

The newest 2025 version of the Midnight Luxe takes an already excellent mattress and puts it well above many competitors that we’ve tested.
The biggest material change between the 2024 and 2025 version has got to be the reformulation of the memory foam.
The 2024 Midnight Luxe memory foam comfort layers were rated at 2.5 PCF. But on the 2025 Midnight Luxe, the rating jumps up to 4.0 PCF.
While both versions have a 3.0″ comfort layer + 2.0″ quilted cover, the 4.0 PCF foam of the 2025 version ultimately creates a mattress that is more supportive, comfortable, and higher performing.
