Which Mattresses Are We Comparing?

Winkbed offers a variety of mattress types, all made from different material constructions.

For simplicity’s sake, we are only going to take a deeper look at the 3 most popular Winkbed mattresses:

  1. Winkbed Original
  2. Winkbed EcoCloud
  3. Winkbed Plus

Purple also offers a range of mattresses that include hybrids and non-hybrids, all using their proprietary grid-like gel pad.

As with Winkbed, we are doing a deeper comparison of 3 of Purple’s most popular mattresses.

  1. Purple Original
  2. Purple Restore Plus
  3. Purple Restore Premier

Cooling Test

Cooling performance is close between Winkbed and Purple, but Winkbed edges out the win overall. The average score for cooling received by Purple mattresses is 9.3, which is 0.3 points below Winkbed’s 9.6 average.

  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (after 5 minutes) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

That said, both of these brands have excellent performers in terms of cooling, with the Purple Original, Winkbed, and Winkbed Plus all receiving perfect 10s.

Winkbed Plus Relaxing
Winkbed Plus Relaxing

The biggest difference between these two brands is the material used in the top layers of the mattress. Both offer hybrid units that house a pocketed coil layer that improves breathability.

Winkbed uses a combination of foams for its top layers, including gel foam, which retains less heat compared to many non-gel foams.

On the other hand, Purple uses its proprietary gel pad, which is one of the most important factors in improved cooling performance. The grid-like structure, combined with coils, creates plenty of room for air to pass through.

Below, you can watch a video of how the heat dissipates on each mattress during our cooling test. For this test, we lie on the mattress for 15 minutes, get off the mattress, and then take periodic surface-level temperature measurements.

Sinkage Test

Sinkage levels range between the mattress brands, with Purple mattresses generally having more shallow sinkage, while Winkbed‘s tend to be deeper. The Purple Restore Premier had the least sinkage (1.82″) and the Winkbed Plus had the deepest (2.50″).

For reference, the average level of signage across all mattresses tested to date is 2.16″.

The Purple Restore Plus and Restore Premier both have minimal sinkage levels that are less than average. Whereas, the rest of the mattresses all have sinkage levels that are deeper than average.

The shallow depths will provide a more “floating on top” feel, but mattresses like the Winkbed Plus will provide a deeper hug and enveloping feel.

Motion Transfer Test

While the race was close in regards to motion transfer, Purple edges out the win with a slightly better performance.

Motion Transfer TestScoreAcc. Range

The Winkbed Plus had the highest level of motion at 14.92 m/s² and the Purple Original had the lowest levels at 2.23 m/s².

The average level of motion transfer across all mattresses tested to date is 8.62 m/s².

The level of motion transfer on each mattress is also documented in the videos below.

Winkbed Original

Purple Original

Winkbed EcoCloud

Purple Restore Plus

Winkbed Plus

Purple Restore Premier

All but 2 of the mattresses had more motion transfer than average, with the Purple Original and Winkbed Original being the exceptions. Even then, the Purple had 3.62 m/s² more acceleration than the Winkbed, which had a total range of 5.85 m/s².

This doesn’t speak to the length of the motion being transferred. While the Purple Original has less total acceleration, that motion remains longer. This is a product of the grid-like gel pad that is used in the top layer.

Pocketed coil layers generally create more motion (except in the case of the Winkbed Original), which is why we see higher acceleration ranges with the other mattresses.

Response Test

Response times are incredibly fast across the board, with Purple barely having consistently faster times. Both brands tackle response time in different ways but still achieve fast results.

Whether is it the gel pad on top of Purple’s mattresses, gel foam like we find in the Winkbed Original, or latex like in the Winkbed EcoCloud, it all achieves a fast material response.

All but the Winkbed Plus easily beat the average, and are among the fastest-responding mattresses we’ve tested to date. Even then, the Winkbed Plus wasn’t far behind, only 0.1 seconds slower.

Bounce Test

Bounce was fairly mixed between brands, with Winkbed having less bounce in general. However, both brands also offer options that don’t fit into that rule.

Winkbed EcoCloudExtremely High14.58″

The mattress with the lowest level of bounce was the Winkbed Plus at 6.75″ of total bounce. Due to the latex material used in the mattress, the Winkbed EcoCloud has the highest level of bounce at 14.58″.

The average level of bounce is 9.69″, comparing all mattresses tested to date.

The Purple Original, Purple Restore Plus, Winkbed Original, and Winkbed EcoCloud all have bounce ranges above the average.

Only 2 mattresses were able to keep bounce below average—the Purple Restore Premier and Winkbed Plus.

The level of bounce for each mattress is documented in the videos below.

Winkbed Original

Purple Original

Winkbed EcoCloud

Purple Restore Plus

Winkbed Plus

Purple Restore Premier

My ideal range for bounce is between 8 – 12″, and all but the Winkbed EcoCloud and Winkbed Plus fall within this range. Bounce within this range allows for improved sex performance, without the cost of too much added motion transfer.

Edge Support Test

Edge support is best on the Winkbed, though both brands have fantastic performers.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding bounce levels.

The average score for edge support is 8.6, with a max sitting sinkage of 4.06″. Nearly all mattresses fell well below the average, with only the Purple having significantly deeper edge compression at 7.75″. In addition, the lying edge support was also lacking.

Beyond that, every other mattress had exceptional performance whether lying or sitting.

Sex Test

This part of our scoring looks at the expected sex performance based on several performance factors.

The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.

These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score and from these factors, we can generate a sex score for each mattress.

The table below shows how sex performance varies between Winkbed and Purple mattresses.

Sex TestSex ScoreBounceEdge SupportNoisePressure ReliefCooling
Winkbed9.18.7108.01010
Winkbed EcoCloud9.8109.7109.09.0

Purple8.8104.1109.010
Purple Restore Plus9.91010109.09.0
Purple Restore Premier8.88.49.7109.09.0

Looking at the resulting data, we can see the majority of the mattresses have excellent performance in regards to sex. The Purple and Winkbed Plus fall slightly behind the rest due to one issue or another but remain solid choices for sex.

The absolute best performance came from the Purple Restore Plus thanks to perfect results with bounce and an exceptionally supportive edge.

Pressure Relief Test

Pressure relief is an important part of how a sleeper engages with a mattress. Comparing Winkbed and Purple, we found results were good across the board, but Winkbed was consistently better.

The average pressure relief score for Winkbed is 9.6 and for Purple is 9.0 out of 10.

Pressure Relief TestScoreComfort LayerSupport Layer

Purple9.05.5″4.0″
Purple Restore Plus9.05.0″8.0″
Purple Restore Premier9.03.0″10.0″

In regards to pressure relief, there were no stand-out bad performers as most mattresses had solid performance. The two standout-good performers were the Winkbed Original and Winkbed Plus which both received perfect 10s.

For comparison, the average level of comfort material across all mattresses tested to date is 4.10″.

Most mattresses on this list offer more comfort material than average. In the case of the Purple Restore Premier, which had 3.0″ of comfort material, it still offers ample pressure relief and a balanced level of support.

Purple Restore Premier Relaxing
Purple Restore Premier Relaxing

While Purple’s grid does a great job at relieving pressure it still doesn’t quite reach the levels of Winkbed’s pillow-top and gel foam combination in the Original and Plus. Their incredibly robust build and 5″+ comfort layers provide ample relief and support for a wide range of body types.

Off-Gassing Test

Off-gassing is consistently strong for Purple mattresses, while Winkbed mattresses range from virtually no off-gassing to strong off-gassing.

The Winkbed Original had no off-gassing after unboxing thanks to the coil layer and the Winkbed Plus wasn’t far behind for a similar reason.

Due to the latex material used in construction, the Winkbed EcoCloud has a stronger smell, though different from the odor that comes from memory or poly foams.

Purple Newday Gel Pad Close

The Purple mattresses have a strong smell and while it dissipated quickly for the Original, that wasn’t the case for the other two mattresses. The Purple Restore Plus‘s odor was strong and lasted for 10 days, however, the Restore Preimer‘s smell lingered for 26 days.

For reference, the average timespan for off-gassing is 5.4 days, making the Restore Premier 20.6 days longer than average.

Support & Sleeping Positions

Both Winkbed and Purple use high-quality materials, which assists in creating supportive mattresses. In addition, they both offer a range of firmnesses that will be better suited for different types of sleepers.

Winkbed Plus Mattress
Winkbed Plus Relaxing

The Winkbed, Winkbed (soft), Winkbed GravityLux, and Purple Restore Premier offer softer options that would be good picks for lightweight sleepers or those who sleep on their side. The softer feel will contribute to generally more hug and contour than firmer options.

All but one of the mattresses from both brands have options in the medium to medium firm feel. From Purple, we see Original, Flex, Plus, Restore, Restore Plus, and Restore Premier all offer firmnesses within the 5-6 range. On Winkbed’s side, we see the Winkbed, EcoCloud, and GravityLux with similar firmness options.

For moderate-weighted sleepers who prefer to sleep on their back or stomach, look to the Purple Restore, Purple Restore Plus, and Winkbed, which offer a slightly firm feel.

Purple Restore Plus Measuring Materials
Purple Restore Plus Measuring Materials

The Winkbed GravityLux is the only mattress on this list that offers a firm 8 out of 10 firmness (where 10 is the most firm). It is a great choice for back and stomach sleepers, but side sleepers might want to avoid the firmer choices.

Heavyweight sleepers should also keep the Winkbed Plus in mind, as it is specifically designed for sleepers over 300 lbs.
