The Verdict

Winkbed and Purple are two big-name brands with high-performing mattresses that are well-known in the market. Winkbed offers a range of mattress types, including hybrid, latex hybrid, memory foam, and a plus-sized mattress. All Purple mattresses are considered Specialty mattresses since they each use Purple’s patented hyper-elastic grid as the primary comfort layer.

Winkbed has a wider firmness range, spanning from 4 – 8 (soft to firm) and Purple features a narrower range, from 5 – 6.5 (medium to medium-firm). If you’re looking for an exclusively soft or firm mattress, Winkbed will be the better match in those cases.

Winkbed has a price range from $1,499 to $1,699 while Purple has an average price range that is greater—$999 up to $3,699, considering the mattresses that we’ve tested.

Purple does have more expensive mattresses available within their Rejuvenate line. The Purple Rejuvenate Premier is priced as much as $7,999 if you opt for their Ultimate model. This price is considerably higher than all other mattresses in this comparison. We haven’t yet tested anything within the Rejuvenate line.

Winkbed mattresses have a performance average of 9.18, considering 4 models. The highest-performing Winkbed is the Winkbed, with a score of 9.72, and the lowest-performing mattress is the Winkbed GravityLux with a score of 8.71.

Purple mattresses have a performance average of 8.35, considering 7 models. The highest-performing Purple is the original Purple, with a score of 8.91, and the lowest-performing mattress is the Purple Flex with a score of 7.61.

Winkbed is a great all-around pick with a value-packed price. It has higher performance and a lower price, making the Winkbed the mattress to beat for many sleepers.

Purple mattress, on the other hand, may be better for back or stomach sleepers. Many Purple mattresses have more bounce and more pushback compared to Winkbed in many cases. Lighter sleepers may even say that Purple mattresses create more of a “floating feel”, where you lie more “on” the mattress as opposed to sinking down “in” the mattress. This support dynamic can work well for many stomach and back sleepers, though it’s not it’s ideal for many side sleepers.

Which Mattress Should You Buy?

The mattresses earning the title for “best overall” from each brand have the highest overall performance. Overall performance is determined by scores from 8 different categories, including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex performance, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company.

Sinkage and bounce are also taken into consideration, but they are not direct scoring factors.

Between Winkbed and Purple, the two top recommendations are Winkbed and Purple.

The Winkbed is a 14″ hybrid mattress with a comfort layer of three different foam types with a pocketed coil base. It has a pressure-relieving feel with deep sinkage and moderate bounce. A queen-sized Winkbed is $1499, but it also performs in the top 1%, earning 10/10 scores for the following categories: Cooling, Response Time, Edge Support, Pressure Relief, and Off-Gassing. It’s a high-performing hybrid that comes in three firmness levels, making it a great option for sleepers of all sleeping positions and most body weights.

The Purple is a 9.5″ specialty mattress with a comfort layer that uses Purple’s patented Purple Grid instead of foam. It has a medium feel with moderate sinkage and very high bounce. Like the Winkbed, a queen-sized Purple is also $1,499, but performance is in the top 28% of all mattresses tested. Still a solid score, but not as good a value as the Winkbed. That aside, Purple earns a 10/10 score in the following performance categories: Cooling, Motion Transfer, and Response Time. This mattress has a medium feel (5 out of 10), and yet some lighter sleepers experience more of a floating feel.

Read Review

Both the Winkbed and Purple are strong contenders for great mattresses and certainly represent the highest-scoring mattress from within each brand. Both mattresses cost $1499 for a queen mattress, but price aside, there are many differences in these mattresses.

The Winkebd is a 14″ hybrid, while Purple is foam-based with their Purple Grid used primarily in the comfort layer. This design gives Purple a thinner 9.5″ thickness overall.

Winkbed is available in three firmness levels—Soft (4), Medium-Firm (6), and Slightly Firm (7), and Purple is available in one firmness—Medium (5).

In terms of feel, Winkbed has deeper sinkage and moderate bounce. Purple has a more moderate level of sinkage and some lighter-weighted sleepers say it has a floating feel where you lie more “on” the mattress as opposed to sinking down “in” the mattress. Bounce on the Purple is also significantly higher, which gives the mattress an active feel and improves sex performance.

Winkbed and Purple are our top picks for side sleepers, as well as the best overall. Side sleepers benefit from deeper sinkage and more contour. This type of a feel helps to avoid painful pressure points and maintain a neutral spinal position when lying on your side.

As mentioned above, the Winkbed has deeper sinkage than Purple and a more exacting contour, thanks to the foam top layers and pillow-top cover. The Soft version would be a great pick for many lighter-weighted side sleepers while moderate to heavy sleepers would likely prefer the luxury firm option (6 out of 10 with a medium-firm feel).

Purple has moderate sinkage with a thin cover, creating a contour that is slightly more generalized.

Both mattresses earned 10/10 for material responsiveness, but Winkbed is the only mattress of the two to also earn a 10/10 for pressure relief. Both of these categories are critically important for side sleepers.

For back and stomach sleepers, our top recommendations would be Winkbed, and from Purple we’d recommend the Purple Plus.

People who sleep on their back or stomach tend to need a medium-firm to slightly firmer feel. The Purple Plus is a medium-firm and Winkbed is available in both medium-firm (luxury firm) and slightly firm (firmer).

The Winkbed Luxury Firm has a firmness of 6 out of 10 (medium-firm feel) with exceptional pressure relief, response time, and support. Heavier back or stomach sleepers may want to opt for the firmer Winkbed version (7 out of 10) or the Winkbed Plus.

The Purple Plus only has a medium-firm firmness (6 out of 10) and create sa moderate sinkage depth.

  • Click here to read our full review of the Purple Plus.

For sleepers who weigh over 250 lbs., I’d recommend the Winkbed Plus and Purple Restore Plus. The Winkbed Plus is specifically designed for heavier sleepers, and while the Restore Plus isn’t exclusively for this weight, it still has the design and performance to be a supportive choice.

The Winkbed Plus has a weight limit of 900 lbs. (450 lbs. per side) and a 14.5″ profile. It has a slightly firm feel with deep sinkage and low levels of bounce. By comparison, the Purple Restore Plus has no listed weight limit and a 13″ profile. Purple offers minimal sinkage and very high bounce.

Ultimately, though, price may be the more important factor. The Winkbed Plus is $1699 for a queen mattress, 44% less than the $2999 price tag on the Purple Restore Plus.

If cooling is top priority, I would stick with the Winkbed or Purple mattress. Both of these mattresses earn a 10/10 for cooling and have the same $1,499 price tag, making them each solid values in their own right.

Knowing that both of these mattresses are top-tier for cooling performance, the next question you’ll want to ask is “what type of feel are you looking for?”

Winked is cool, with deep sinkage, moderate bounce, and exceptional edge support when sitting or lying.

Purple is also equally as cool, while having only moderate sinkage and very high bounce. It does struggle with edge support—the foam-based support is likely a contributing factor here compared to Winkbed’s coil-based support.

But that being said, strictly considering cooling, both of these mattresses are very impressive with very low levels of heat retention and a cool feel to them.

If you’re on a tight budget, the Winkbed and Purple Flex are our top picks, but it’s hardly “apples to apples”.

The Winkbed is a $1499 hybrid and the #1 best mattress we’ve tested to date. The Purple Flex is over 30% less, only $999 for a queen mattress, but it also has a significantly lower performance score (7.61). If you definitely want one of these brands, these would be our best recommendations.

As you can see here, the old adage of “you get what you pay for” has never been more true than it is in this comparison. If you really need a mattress under $1000, I would honestly say neither of these brands will be right for you.

Instead, I’d suggest you check out our Best Affordable Mattress guide, which highlights 9 other mattresses that are likely better options than what Winkbed and Purple can offer.

  • Click here to read our full review of the Purple Flex.

For sleepers who struggle with back pain, I would point you to the Winkbed Plus and Purple Restore Plus. If you suffer from back pain, finding a mattress that prioritizes spinal alignment and pressure relief is critically important.

The Winkbed Plus is a 14.5″ hybrid designed for heavier sleepers, but also provides a fantastic option for any sleeper looking for a slightly firm feel with next-level pressure relief. It also has the added bonus of costing 44% less than the Purple Restore Plus.

The Purple Restore Plus has a medium feel, but the minimal sinkage may be a nice feel for sleepers who are sensitive to their back sinking in too deeply. The Purple has very high bounce with exceptional edge support and soli pressure relief as well.

For couples, sex performance may be at the top of your list—if that’s you, I’d steer you toward the Winkbed EcoCloud and Purple Restore Plus. Both of these mattresses excel in bounce, edge support, noise, cooling, and pressure relief, all critically important factors for sex performance.

The Winkbed EcoCloud is a latex hybrid mattress that ranks in the top 35% of all mattresses tested to date. It has an extremely high level of bounce, contributing to a sex score of 9.8.

By comparison, the Purple Restore Plus ranks in the top 28% of all mattresses tested to date. This mattress is $2999 for a queen (46% more than the Winkbed EcoCloud). It has slightly less bounce than the EcoCloud, but still very high levels and earns a sex score of 9.9.

For the best medium-firm mattress, I’d recommend the Winkbed or Purple Plus

While Winkbed earns the higher overall performance (9.82 for Winkbed, 8.41 for Purple Plus), both mattresses represent the highest performance of any mattress within the brand at that firmness level.

The Winkbed is a 14″ hybrid mattress that is available in medium-firm (6) as well as a soft (4) and slightly firm (7) feel.

The Purple Plus is an 11″ specialty mattress available in a single firmness—6 out of 10 with the same medium-firm feel.

In-Depth Mattress Analyses

After comparing 4 Winkbed mattresses, the brand average score is 9.18. After comparing 7 Purple mattresses, the brand average is 8.35.

Between the two, Winkbed has a higher performance and also a lower average price. The average price for a Winkbed mattress is $1,599.00, and the average price for a Purple mattress is $2,127 (for a queen).

Dollar for dollar, Winkbed is the better value compared to Purple mattresses. That being said, it’s not always about the bottom dollar if you’re looking for a specific feel or want a mattress that excels in a particular category.

Back and stomach sleepers usually prefer less sinkage, which better maintains proper alignment of their spine. The Purple Restore Plus (1.99″) and Purple Restore Premier (1.82″) both have less sinkage than average, but the Restore Plus proves to be the better value of the two.

Generally, side sleepers enjoy a deeper level of sinkage, as that typically translates to better pressure relief and contour. For deeper sinkage, opt for the Winkbed (2.38″), Winkbed EcoCloud (2.35″), Winkbed Plus (2.50″), or Purple (2.24″).

Motion Transfer Test

Considering motion transfer, both Winkbed and Purple have mattresses that really impress and others that fall short. The average motion transfer score for Winkbed is 7.7 and the average for Purple is 8.0. According to this data, Purple has the higher average motion transfer levels compared to Winkbed.

Mattresses with less bounce than average include the Winkbed Plus (6.75″).

Mattresses with more bounce are better for ease of movement and increase sex performance. However, higher bounce also typically creates a higher level of motion transfer. So there are pros and cons when it comes to bounce.

Edge Support Test

Moving right along, let’s talk about edge support. Both Winkbed and Purple generally have great edge support across the board (excluding one Purple mattress).

The only mattress that is less impressive in this category is the Purple, which measured 5.5″ of sinkage when seated directly at the edge and mediocre lying support as well.

It also feels relevant to point out that the Purple is the only mattress in this comparison that isn’t coil-based. Coils can play a vital role in the level of edge support of any mattress.

Sex Test

For sex performance, Purple mattresses take the lead over Winkbed, with an average sex score of 9.2, while Winkbed has an average sex score of 8.9.

As we touched on above, the best mattresses for sex all have similar qualities—high bounce, supportive edges, great cooling, minimal noise, and great pressure relief.

While both Winkbed and Purple each have at least one mattress that is great for sex, there are other mattresses that don’t quite make the cut.

The Purple and Purple Restore Premier are among the worst-performing mattresses in this category. Lower levels of bounce or weaker edges are the primary sex killer for both of these mattresses.

The average pressure relief score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.7, with a 4.1″ comfort layer.

The Winkbed and Winkbed Plus both earned a 10/10 for pressure relief. Trailing slightly behind, the Winkbed EcoCloud, Purple, Purple Restore Plus, and Purple Restore Premier all earned a 9/10 for pressure relief.

Typically speaking, pressure relief has a strong correlation to the thickness of the comfort layer. A thicker comfort layer (paired with a thicker support layer) is one of the most effective ways to see improved pressure relief on a mattress.

This is especially true for side sleepers who may engage more deeply in mattress layers, especially in areas of high pressure like the hips and midsection.

Off-Gassing Test

Off-gassing on a Winkbed mattress is generally going to be faster than off-gassing on a Purple mattress.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding off-gassing.

Winkbed10None0 days
Winkbed EcoCloud8.6Strong5 days
Winkbed Plus9.7Moderate1 day
Purple8.9Strong4 days
Purple Restore Plus7.2Strong10 days
Purple Restore Premier2.8Strong26 days

The average smell duration across all mattresses tested to date is 6.5 days.

The average off-gassing duration on Winkbed is 2 days, and the average off-gassing duration on Purple is 13 days, a pretty significant difference if you’re sensitive to strong odors.

The mattress with the absolute fastest off-gassing is the Winkbed, which had no off-gassing odors in our tests. At the opposite end of the spectrum, we have the Purple Restore Premier, which took an overwhelming 26 days to fully off-gas. If you’re sensitive to strong odors, I would recommend Winkbed over Purple in this case.

Company

Comparing Winkbed vs. Purple isn’t always just about the mattress, it’s also about the brand that stands behind the mattress. Of the two brands, Winkbed has a higher company score, marked by a longer trial, a longer warranty, and no return fee.

Comparing 99+ brands tested to date, the average trial length is 173 nights, and the average warranty is 13 years, excluding 40% of mattresses that offer lifetime warranties.

Winkbed mattresses come with a 120-night trial and a lifetime warranty. By comparison, Purple mattresses only have a 100-night trial and a 10-year warranty.

In 2025, Purple updated their return policy from free returns to now charging a return fee that ranges from $150 to $250, depending on the model. In a time where we see more and more brands embrace the standard of free shipping and returns, this move feels a bit backwards, and it further highlights WinkBed for having more favorable company policies.
