Our Verdict

Saatva and Avocado have many differences, but also a handful of brand overlaps. Both companies offer at least one latex hybrid mattress, but Avocado has more than one, as latex is Avocado’s specialty. On the other hand, Saatva offers a wider range of mattress types including hybrids, memory foam hybrids, latex hybrids, and others.

Saatva has mattresses with a firmness range between Soft (4) and Firm (8). Avocado, on the other hand, is slightly wider—Extra Soft (3) to Extra Firm (9). Both brands have numerous models in the middle medium (5) to medium-firm (6) range.

The average price of an Avocado mattress is $2,402 and the average price of a Saatva mattress is $2,698. Avocado has a few mid-range options but also a wide selection of niche models for very specific sleepers.

Of the 7 Saatva mattresses we’ve tested to date, the brand has an average overall performance score of 9.24. The average overall performance of Avocado is lower, 8.71, but still considerably higher than average.

If you know you want a latex hybrid, Avocado certainly has more options, but if you are open to other mattress types and want a luxury feel, Saatva may be the better brand pick.

Which Mattress Should You Buy?

The mattresses earning the title for “best overall” from each brand have the highest overall performance. Overall performance is determined by scores from 8 different categories including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex performance, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company.

Sinkage and bounce are also taken into consideration, but they are not direct scoring factors.

Between Saatva and Avocado, the two top recommendations are Saatva Classic and Avocado Eco.

The Saatva Classic is an 11.5″ coil mattress with two layers of coils, topped with a plush euro-style pillow top. It has a luxuriously soft feel with deep sinkage and extremely high bounce. The Saatva Classic is the #2 best mattress we’ve tested to date and is available in three firmness levels. This high quality and variety of firmnesses make the Saatva an attractive option for a wide range of sleepers. If you’re not specifically looking for a latex mattress, the Saatva Classic certainly fits the bill in terms of versatility and overall performance.

The Avocado Eco is a 10″ latex hybrid mattress with a 2.0″ natural latex comfort layer and pocketed coils. It has a medium feel with deep sinkage and very high bounce. This mattress performs among the top 8% of all mattresses tested to date, but is also a fantastic value (under $1,300 for a queen mattress). In our performance tests, the Avocado Eco earned a 10/10 performance score in the following categories: Motion Transfer and Response Time. If you know that you’re looking for natural latex with sustainable materials, fast response time, and a more generalized body contour, the Avocado Eco could be the right choice for you.

Read Review

For the best mattress from each brand, we’re looking at the Saatva Classic and the Avocado Eco. Both of these have high performance, well within the top 10% of all mattresses tested to date, but technically the Saatva Classic score is higher (ranking in the top 1% of all mattresses tested.)

Both mattresses have a similar feel, characterized by deep sinkage and very high (or extremely high) bounce. But the Avocado Eco has a classic latex feel, which is certainly different than the coil-on-coil design of the Saatva Classic.

Saatva does have a slower response time than Avocado, but Avocado has weaker edges than Saatva. Both mattresses have above-average scores in all other categories.

Not sure which firmness you need? Your ideal mattress firmness depends on two major factors—sleeping position and body weight. With the right firmness, your body and spine will maintain proper alignment when sleeping

What Firmness Is Right For You2

Lightweight sleepers or those who sleep on their side tend to need a softer mattress. By comparison, heavier sleepers or those who sleep on their back or stomach tend to need more support and a firmer feel.

Cooling Test

Looking at cooling, the Saatva Classic performs #1 in this 4-way comparison, but to be fair, the other 3 mattresses are not far behind. All of these mattresses perform better than average in terms of limited heat retention.

Cooling TestScoreBaselineMax. Temp.Ending Temp.
Saatva Classic1077.5°88.6°79.7°
Saatva Latex Hybrid9.077.9°91.0°82.6°

  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (after 5 minutes) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

Below, you can watch a video of how the heat dissipates on each mattress during our cooling test. For this test, we lie on the mattress for 15 minutes, get off the mattress, and then take periodic surface-level temperature measurements.

Saatva Classic

Avocado Eco

Saatva Latex Hybrid

Avocado Green

The average cooling score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6.

The Saatva Classic uses a coil-on-coil design and very limited foam layers. The extra coils give the mattress excellent breathability, a 10/10 for cooling performance.

The Saatva Latex Hybrid, Avocado Eco, and Avocado Green are all latex hybrids. Latex, as a material, typically has better cooling performance than other foams (especially memory foam).

Sinkage Test

Considering sinkage, Saatva and Avocado both have a good range of sinkage options (minimal, moderate, or deep).

Sinkage TestSinkage FeelSinkage Depth

Saatva Latex Hybrid

Saatva Latex Hybrid Sinkage Test

Avocado Green

Avocado Green Sinkage Test

The average sinkage depth across all mattresses tested to date is 2.20″.

Back and stomach sleepers usually prefer less sinkage, which better maintains proper alignment of their spine. The Saatva Latex Hybrid (1.85″) is the only mattress that has less sinkage than average.

Generally, side sleepers enjoy a deeper level of sinkage, as that typically translates to better pressure relief and contour. For deeper sinkage, opt for the Saatva Classic (2.40″), Avocado Eco (2.48″), or the Avocado Green (2.19″).

Motion Transfer Test

All 4 of the mattresses in this comparison have less motion transfer than average. Two of the four mattresses earned a perfect 10/10 in this category, with exceptionally low motion transfer levels.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding motion transfer.

Motion Transfer TestScoreAcc. Range

The level of motion transfer on each mattress is also documented in the videos below.

Saatva Classic

Avocado Eco

Saatva Latex Hybrid

Avocado Green

The average motion transfer score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.2.

Both the Saatva Latex Hybrid and Avocado Eco earned a 10/10 for a very low motion transfer level. For the absolute lowest motion transfer, opt for the Saatva Latex Hybrid, which has only 3.13 m/s² of motion in our tests.

The Saatva Classic earned a 9.6 and the Avocado Green earned a 9.0 for motion transfer. Although these levels don’t quite match the level of the Saatva Latex Hybrid or Avocado Eco, they are still pretty impressive.

The Avocado Green, representing the highest level of motion transfer, still only measured 7.31 m/s² of motion in our tests.

Response Test

For material responsiveness, both Saatva and Avocado have at least one mattress with an extremely fast response time, a response score of 10/10 in our tests.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding response.

The Saatva Classic and Avocado Green were slightly slower, being mostly recovered by 0.3-0.4 seconds and fully recovered by 0.7-0.8 seconds.

Compared to average, the Saatva Latex HybridAvocado Eco, and Avocado Green all performed better than average.

Bounce Test

All of the mattresses in this comparison have a higher bounce than average.

The average bounce across all mattresses tested to date is 8.77″.

The mattress with the least amount of bounce is the Saatva Latex Hybrid (10.82″) and the mattress with the most bounce is the Saatva Classic (14.67″).

Both the Avocado Green (11.54″) and Avocado Eco (12.19″) fall in the middle of the bounce range, compared to the four mattresses here. But compared to the larger collection of all mattresses tested, these both have higher bounce than average.

Edge Support Test

For the best edge support, Saatva takes the win over Avocado, but Avocado is certainly no slouch. Of the 4 mattresses featured here, three of them have better edge support than average.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding edge support.

The average edge support score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.7.

The Saatva Classic and Saatva Latex Hybrid tie for the best edge support, with only 3.0″ of sitting sinkage when seated at or near the edge. The Avocado Green is just slightly behind, with an edge support score of 9.9. and 3.25″ of sinkage.

The Avocado Eco is the least among these four mattresses, with an edge support score 8.7 and 4.25″ of sitting sinkage. This is slightly deeper than the average level of 3.94″.

Sex Test

For sex performance, Saatva outperforms Avocado, but again, the difference is not by much. Really, both brands have ample sex performance that helps improve intimacy.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding sex.

Sex TestSex ScoreBounceEdge SupportNoisePressure ReliefCooling
Saatva Classic9.910108.01010
Saatva Latex Hybrid9.49.310109.09.0
Avocado Eco9.5108.48.09.09.0
Avocado Green9.59.79.78.08.09.0

The average sex score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.2.

Mattresses that score best in this category have high bounce, good edge support, low noise, and good pressure relief and cooling.

With a sex performance score of 9.9, the Saatva Classic is our top pick for the best mattress for sex among the mattresses in this comparison. The Avocado Eco and Avocado Green are not far behind, with a score of 9.5.

The Eco has a higher bounce but weaker edges than the Green. On the other hand, the Avocado Green has slightly less bounce than the Eco, but also better edge support. The result is two mattresses with equal sex performance.

The Saatva Latex Hybrid has the lowest sex score, but even that 9.4 score is still well above the average score (8.3).

The reality is that coils and latex foam are both independently helping a mattress generate more bounce. All of these mattresses are either coil or latex hybrids, so bounce is a non-issue here.

Pressure Relief Test

Moving onto pressure relief, Saatva had the best performance here. Both Saatva mattresses scored between 9-10/10 while the Avocado mattresses scored between 8-9/10.

The average pressure relief score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6.

Coming in at the top of the list, we have the Saatva Classic, which earned a 10/10 for pressure relief.

The Saatva Latex Hybrid and Avocado Eco are slightly behind the Saatva Classic, with a score of 9.0. These mattresses are all latex hybrids, meaning they use a combination of latex foam and pocketed coils.

The Avocado Green has the latest pressure relief score, only 8 out of 10 in our tests. While this mattress looks like the others in the photos above, the pressure relief just did not match that of the Eco and Saatva models in my opinion.

Off-Gassing Test

Looking at off-gassing, both Saatva and Avocado have great performance, off-gassing significantly faster than average.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding off-gassing.

Off-Gassing TestScoreInitial SmellSmell Duration

Saatva Latex Hybrid10None0 days
Avocado Eco9.7Minimal1 day
Avocado Green9.7Strong1 day

The average smell duration across all mattresses tested to date is 6.8 days.

Both of the Saatva mattresses experience no off-gassing at all. These mattresses are shipped uncompressed, which is likely a contributing factor to its good performance in this category.

Avocado Wool Pressing On Material

Both Avocado mattresses fully off-gas in 1 day, despite the Avocado Green having a stronger smell than the Eco at the initial unboxing.

If you’re sensitive to strong odors, you would likely be satisfied by any of the mattresses in this comparison.

Company

Comparing Saatva vs. Avocado at a company-wide level, Saatva takes the win.

The factors that make up the company score include trial period, warranty, shipping, and returns
