Firmness
Looking at all available mattresses, Helix ranges in firmness from 4 to 8 out of 10.
There are some cases where our experience disagreed with the Helix website. For example, the Helix Moonlight Luxe felt significantly firmer than it was advertised.
With such a wide range of options, sleepers have a good chance of finding their preferred feel that also fits their budget.
| Firmness | Rating | Feel |
|---|---|---|
| Helix Dawn | 8 | Firm |
| Helix Dawn Luxe | 8 | Firm |

Not sure which firmness you need? Your ideal mattress firmness depends on two major factors—sleeping position and body weight. With the right firmness, your body and spine will maintain proper alignment when sleeping.

Lightweight sleepers or those who sleep on their side tend to need a softer mattress. By comparison, heavier sleepers or those who sleep on their back or stomach tend to need more support and a firmer feel.
Performance Tests
While Helix has a wide variety of mattresses to choose from, separated by firmness/feel and 3 luxury tiers they call “collections.”
Firmness and Feel:
| Model | Who Its For |
|---|---|
| Dawn | Firm Feel; Back/Stomach |
| Dusk | Medium Feel; Back/Stomach |
| Midnight | Medium Feel; Side Sleeping |
| Moonlight | Soft Feel; Back/Stomach |
| Plus | Medium-Firm Feel; Max Support |
| Sunset | Soft; Side Sleeping |
| Twilight | Firm; Side Sleeping |
Collections:
And within each firmness collection is a different luxury tier. These different tiers come at different thicknesses as well as different price points.
- Standard / Core (12″ thick, $999/queen)
- Luxe (14″ thick, $1,899/queen)
- Elite (15.5″ thick, $2,999/queen)
Lastly, Helix has a few special features that can be added to any mattress at any firmness and any price tier. These upgrades include:
- ErgoAlign Layer – This is an optional layer for better support for sleepers with back pain—tends to provide a firmer feel and may be too much pushback for some sleepers.
- GlacioTex Cooling Cover – This is an optional cooling cover (for the Core or Luxe models, it comes standard on the Helix Elite models) and equips the mattress with a thick pillow top that includes an advanced cooling cover. Mattresses that we tested with this cover earned a 10/10 cooling score, compared to 9/10 when the mattress just used the standard Tencel cover.
- CoolForce Layer – This option includes the GlacioTex Cooling Cover to make the best possible cooling performance Helix can provide. The CoolForce Layer refers to ribbons of graphite under the cover that run along the width of the mattress, designed to pull heat away from the body.
Now, let’s begin our deep-dive to explore the performance difference between these 6 models. For the sake of comparison, we chose the mid-tier Luxe line for each of the different models.

Cooling Test
When it comes to cooling performance, the 6 Helix Luxe mattresses are excellent.
The average cooling performance score for the Helix Luxe line is 9.3, with scores ranging from 9.0 to 10.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding cooling.
| Cooling Test | Score | Baseline | Max. Temp. | Ending Temp. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Helix Midnight Luxe | 10 | 76.1° | 89.3° | 80.0° |
| Helix Sunset Luxe | 9.0 | 78.1° | 90.3° | 79.9° |
| Helix Dusk Luxe | 10 | 71.3° | 89.5° | 80.9° |

| Helix Twilight Luxe | 9.0 | 77.3° | 89.6° | 79.3° |
| Helix Moonlight Luxe | 9.0 | 78.4° | 90.2° | 80.2° |
- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (after 5 minutes) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
Below, you can watch a video of how the heat dissipates on each mattress during our cooling test. For this test, we lie on the mattress for 15 minutes, get off the mattress, and then take periodic surface-level temperature measurements.
Helix Midnight Luxe
Helix Dawn Luxe
Helix Sunset Luxe
Helix Twilight Luxe
Helix Dusk Luxe
Helix Moonlight Luxe
The average performance score based on all mattresses tested to date is only 8.6. By this measure, all 6 Helix Luxe models are better-than-average.
The Helix Midnight Luxe and Helix Dusk Luxe performed the best in our cooling tests. Their increased performance is due to those models having the optional cooling cover called GlacioTex.

From our tests, we can conclude that the Helix cooling cover upgrade, which comes free in the Elite line, makes a significant impact on cooling. It also has a noticeable cool-to-the-touch feel.
All things being equal, the Helix Luxe line offers consistent, excellent cooling performance from model to model. The slight variation in foam order and density seems to be outweighed by the effect of the quilted cover used in the topmost layer.
Sinkage Test
When it comes to sinkage depth, we see a large variation across the Helix Luxe models.
The average sinkage depth measured in the Helix Luxe line is 2.18″, with depths ranging from minimal at 1.93″ to deep at 2.54″.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding sinkage.
| Sinkage Test | Sinkage Feel | Sinkage Depth |
|---|---|---|
| Helix Midnight Luxe | Moderate | 2.03″ |
| Helix Sunset Luxe | Deep | 2.44″ |
| Helix Dusk Luxe | Moderate | 2.08″ |
| Helix Dawn Luxe | Deep | 2.54″ |
| Helix Twilight Luxe | Moderate | 2.03″ |
| Helix Moonlight Luxe | Minimal | 1.93″ |
The level of sinkage for each mattress is documented in the images below.
Helix Midnight Luxe

Helix Dawn Luxe

Helix Sunset Luxe

Helix Twilight Luxe

Helix Dusk Luxe

Helix Moonlight Luxe

The average sinkage depth across all mattresses tested to date is 2.23″.
The results of our tests don’t quite line up with what we’d expect from their firmness levels.
The Helix Midnight Luxe (2.03″), Helix Dusk Luxe (2.08″), Helix Twilight Luxe (2.03″), and Helix Moonlight Luxe (1.93″) all have less sinkage than average. Meanwhile, the Helix Sunset Luxe (2.44″) or Helix Dawn Luxe (2.54″) both had deeper-than-average sinkage.

Models like the Helix Dawn, which has one of the firmest ratings, having the most sinkage, means that there is more nuance to the feel that can be captured in a 12 lbs. weighted ball. Ultimately, these mattresses have a lot of comfort material for bodies to sink into, but most of them provide more of a floating feel that puts you on top of a mattress rather than in it.
Are you over 300 lbs.? Heavier sleepers generally need a mattress with a firmer feel to maintain optimal support. While many in the Luxe line would be well-suited to support heavier bodies, heavy people should opt for the mattress they designed specifically for them, like the Helix Plus Luxe.
Motion Transfer Test
When it comes to motion transfer, we measure the amount of energy transferred on one side of the mattress after dropping a weighted ball on the opposite end. Within the Helix Luxe lineup, the Helix Dusk Luxe has the lowest motion transfer.
The Helix Luxe models earned an average motion transfer score of 9.3, with scores ranging from 8.4 to 10.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding motion transfer.
| Motion Transfer Test | Score | Acc. Range |
|---|---|---|
| Helix Midnight Luxe | 9.7 | 5.76 m/s² |
| Helix Sunset Luxe | 9.3 | 6.56 m/s² |
| Helix Dusk Luxe | 10 | 4.60 m/s² |
| Helix Dawn Luxe | 8.4 | 8.59 m/s² |
| Helix Twilight Luxe | 9.5 | 6.11 m/s² |

The level of motion transfer on each mattress is also documented in the videos below.
Helix Midnight Luxe
Helix Dawn Luxe
Helix Sunset Luxe
Helix Twilight Luxe
Helix Dusk Luxe
Helix Moonlight Luxe
The average motion transfer score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.2. Based on this score, the entire Helix Luxe line has lower motion transfer than average.
The Helix Dusk Luxe was the only model to score a 10/10 in our motion transfer tests. The combination of its firm feel (8), memory foam quilted into the cover, and poly foam in the comfort layer created Goldilocks conditions to disperse energy and isolate motion.

The Helix Dawn Luxe had the highest motion measured in our tests. Its firm feel, designed for back/stomach sleepers, makes a more rigid surface that allows for energy to travel more easily.
All mattresses considered, the entire Helix Luxe line should be fantastic for couples looking to avoid disturbing one another during the night. If you want to ensure the lowest motion, go with the Dusk Luxe, Twilight Luxe, or Midnight Luxe.
Response Test
For response time, we record the time mattress layers take to reform back to shape after removing a weighted ball from its surface. In terms of speed, Helix is generally not super responsive compared to most mattresses.
The Helix Luxe line earned an average response time score of 8.2, with scores ranging from 6.8 to 9.4.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding response.
| Response Test | Score | Mostly Recovered | Completely Recovered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Helix Midnight Luxe | 8.4 | 0.4 seconds | 1.2 seconds |
| Helix Sunset Luxe | 6.8 | 0.6 seconds | 2.0 seconds |
| Helix Dusk Luxe | 7.9 | 0.4 seconds | 1.7 seconds |
| Helix Dawn Luxe | 8.6 | 0.4 seconds | 0.9 seconds |
| Helix Twilight Luxe | 7.9 | 0.5 seconds | 1.2 seconds |
| Helix Moonlight Luxe | 9.4 | 0.2 seconds | 1.0 seconds |
The level of responsiveness for each mattress is documented in the videos below.
Helix Midnight Luxe
Helix Dawn Luxe
Helix Sunset Luxe
Helix Twilight Luxe
Helix Dusk Luxe
Helix Moonlight Luxe
The average response score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.8. Based on this score, the majority of Helix Luxe models are considered slower than average.
The most responsive mattress is the Helix Moonlight Luxe. The speeds for the layers to mostly recover and fully recover are near-instantaneous. Meanwhile, mattresses like the Helix Sunset Luxe, Twilight Luxe, and Dusk Luxe all have a noticeably slower response.
These speeds aren’t the worst we’ve seen, but they will mean sleepers will perceive a slight stuck feeling while shifting positions on the mattress.
The Midnight Luxe and Dawn Luxe will be less noticeable. But, ultimately, all these mattresses have gel memory foam sewn into their covers. For this reason, Helix will never achieve as lively a feel as coil or latex mattresses typically provide.
Bounce Test
Bounce is a preferential factor, as some sleepers prefer more and others prefer less. Across the Helix Luxe lineup, we see a trend that undoubtedly leans on the low side for bounce.
Across these six Helix Luxe models, we measured an average bounce height of 8.12″, with measurements ranging as low as 6.74″ and as high as 9.53″.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding bounce.
| Bounce Test | Bounce Feel | Bounce Height |
|---|---|---|
| Helix Midnight Luxe | Low | 6.74″ |
| Helix Sunset Luxe | Moderate | 8.22″ |
| Helix Dusk Luxe | Moderate | 8.74″ |
| Helix Dawn Luxe | Moderate | 9.53″ |
| Helix Twilight Luxe | Low | 7.99″ |
| Helix Moonlight Luxe | Low | 7.83″ |
The level of bounce for each mattress is documented in the videos below.
Helix Midnight Luxe
Helix Dawn Luxe
Helix Sunset Luxe
Helix Twilight Luxe
Helix Dusk Luxe
Helix Moonlight Luxe
The average bounce across all mattresses tested to date is 8.77″.
The Helix Dawn Luxe (9.53″) is the only mattress that has higher-than-average bounce. At this level, you certainly are going to feel the benefit of more spring and pushback during larger movements on the mattress.
On the other end, the Helix Midnight Luxe (6.74″), Twilight Luxe (7.99″), and Moonlight Luxe (7.83″) are going to have a more cozy, static feeling. However, those last two are right on the cusp of my ideal bounce range of 8 – 12″.

Mattresses with more bounce are better for ease of movement and increase sex performance. However, higher bounce also typically creates a higher level of motion transfer. So there are pros and cons when it comes to bounce
Overall, if you’re looking for a super lively, springy mattress, Helix is not the ideal brand for you.
Edge Support Test
For a measure of edge support, we lie and sit directly at the edge of the mattress to measure its compression and likelihood of material collapse.
The Helix Luxe collection is universally exceptional in both regards. These models earned an average edge support score of 9.9, which is just about as perfect as a brand can get.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding edge support.
| Edge Support Test | Score | Sitting Sinkage | Lying Support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Helix Midnight Luxe | 10 | 2.75″ | Outstanding |
| Helix Sunset Luxe | 9.9 | 3.25″ | Outstanding |
| Helix Dusk Luxe | 10 | 3.00″ | Outstanding |
| Helix Dawn Luxe | 9.6 | 3.75″ | Outstanding |
| Helix Twilight Luxe | 10 | 3.00″ | Outstanding |
| Helix Moonlight Luxe | 10 | 2.50″ | Outstanding |
The level of edge support is documented in the images below.
Helix Midnight Luxe

Helix Dawn Luxe

Helix Sunset Luxe

Helix Twilight Luxe

Helix Dusk Luxe

Helix Moonlight Luxe

The average edge support score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.7. We measured below-average sitting edge compression on all the Luxe models, and they all received an outstanding rating on lying support.

All Helix Luxe models are equipped with 2 sets of reinforced coils that strengthen the support around the full perimeter of the mattresses.
This, combined with the high-quality memory and poly foams used in the comfort layers, makes for an edge you can trust for sitting, lying, and amorous activities on all sides of the mattress.
Sex Test
To calculate our sex performance scores, we use a weighted formula that factors in bounce, edge support, noise, pressure relief, and cooling.
Across the six Helix Luxe models, they earned an average sex score of 8.3, with scores ranging from 7.9 to 8.7. This is neither particularly good nor bad.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding sex.
| Sex Test | Sex Score | Bounce | Edge Support | Noise | Pressure Relief | Cooling |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Helix Midnight Luxe | 7.9 | 6.7 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 |
| Helix Sunset Luxe | 8.3 | 7.6 | 9.7 | 10 | 10 | 9.0 |
| Helix Dusk Luxe | 8.6 | 7.9 | 10 | 10 | 9.0 | 10 |
| Helix Dawn Luxe | 8.7 | 8.4 | 9.1 | 10 | 9.0 | 9.0 |
| Helix Twilight Luxe | 8.3 | 7.5 | 10 | 10 | 9.0 | 9.0 |
| Helix Moonlight Luxe | 8.2 | 7.4 | 10 | 10 | 9.0 | 9.0 |
The average sex score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.2. By this measure, only the Helix Midnight Luxe is below average in terms of sex. Despite perfect 10/10 scores across the majority of factors, it has the lowest amount of bounce, which makes up 60% of the sex score.

This is no surprise, as the Midnight Luxe has the thickest layer of dense memory foam. Some of us at Naplab keep a chunk of this memory foam on our desk to play with, because of its dense, stressball-like quality.
The Helix Dawn and Dusk mattresses each have the highest sex scores, which are slightly better than average. Granted, with higher bounce, these mattresses could really impress.
The thick, dense foam layers in all of these mattresses hinder their bounce and springy feel, which is ultimately what makes a good sex score.
Pressure Relief Test
Moving on, let’s discuss pressure relief – arguably the most important factor when it comes to sleeper satisfaction. Here, Helix Luxe models excel with excellent to outstanding pressure relief across the board.
The six Helix Luxe models earned an average pressure relief score of 9.3, with no mattress scoring less than a 9.0.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding pressure relief.
| Pressure Relief Test | Score | Comfort Layer | Support Layer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Helix Midnight Luxe | 10 | 5.00″ | 9.00″ |
| Helix Sunset Luxe | 10 | 4.75″ | 8.75″ |
| Helix Dusk Luxe | 9.0 | 4.75″ | 8.75″ |
| Helix Dawn Luxe | 9.0 | 4.50″ | 9.00″ |
| Helix Twilight Luxe | 9.0 | 4.75″ | 8.75″ |
| Helix Moonlight Luxe | 9.0 | 4.75″ | 8.75″ |
The average pressure relief score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6.
The best Helix models for pressure relief are the Helix Midnight Luxe and the Helix Sunset Luxe. It should be noted that the Sunset Luxe model we tested included the ErgoAlign Layer upgrade, so we can compare its effect to the standard Luxe models. It costs an additional $199 on top of the $1,899 price.

This upgraded layer is more dense and includes multiple zones to give areas more support where your body needs it. Based on the Sunset Luxe receiving a 10/10 score while most Luxe models only managed a 9.0, we can conclude the ErgoAlign Layer has a noticeable impact on pressure relief. Whether the extra $200 is worth it to you is another matter.
The materials included in each mattress are documented in the images below.
Helix Midnight Luxe

Helix Dawn Luxe

Helix Dusk Luxe

Helix Moonlight Luxe

The Helix Midnight Luxe came by its score without any caveats. The 2.00″ of dense (4.0 pounds per cubic foot) memory foam sandwiched by the thick quilted cover and transitional poly foam make for an outstanding comfort dynamic.
Ultimately, all of these Helix Luxe mattresses are fantastic in terms of pressure relief. Every one of them has more comfort material than average. The standard TENCEL pillow top cover is filled with foam that creates a more nuanced luxury feel to each mattress.
Both the quantity of comfort material and the quality of the foams used make these models exceptional compared to the average mattress.
Off-Gassing Test
For off-gassing, assess the smell intensity from a mattress upon its initial unboxing and the duration it takes to dissipate all lingering odors. In regard to off-gassing, the Helix Luxe mattresses are just about average.
The six Helix models in the Luxe collection earned an average off-gassing score of 8.5, with their smell durations ranging from 4 to 7 days.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding off-gassing.
| Off-Gassing Test | Score | Initial Smell | Smell Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Helix Midnight Luxe | 8.1 | Moderate | 7 days |
| Helix Sunset Luxe | 8.6 | Strong | 5 days |
| Helix Dusk Luxe | 8.6 | Strong | 5 days |
| Helix Dawn Luxe | 8.9 | Strong | 4 days |
| Helix Twilight Luxe | 8.3 | Strong | 6 days |
| Helix Moonlight Luxe | 8.3 | Strong | 6 days |
The average smell duration across all mattresses tested to date is 7.13 days. This amount of time is not ideal, but it’s a reasonable duration considering the manufacturing and boxing processes.

By this benchmark, most of the Helix Luxe models had a shorter-than-average smell duration. The 5.5-day smell duration on these mattresses also demonstrates their breathability, as noted with their great cooling scores.
In the end, these are still synthetic odors that largely come from polyurethane foam. If you’re sensitive to these, the Helix Midnight Luxe proved to have the least intense smell. Alternatively, you can let it air out in another room before fully replacing it on your mattress frame.
Company
Finally, let’s discuss the company policies that Helix offers customers and compare them to the average we’ve found across over 100 brands we’ve reviewed to date.
Helix offers sleepers a 100-night trial period, a lifetime warranty, free shipping, and free returns. These are phenomenal, consumer-friendly policies that earned them a 9.4 score.

Our only nitpick about Helix is the shorter length of their trial period, only 100 nights, notably shorter than average.
Check out the table below to see the details of Helix company policies.
| Company | Helix |
|---|---|
| Score | 9.4 |
| Trial Period | 100 nights |
| Warranty | Lifetime |
| Shipping | $0 |
| Returns | $0 |
| Country of Origin | USA |
To date, we have tested 395+ mattresses from 105 different brands. The average trial length is 175 nights and the average warranty is 13 years, excluding 42% of mattresses that offer lifetime warranties.
Speaking of lifetime warranties, there are a fair amount of conditions that come with it. Most notably, after 10 years, these warranties tend to offer less than a full 100% replacement credit, so be sure to double-check those terms if that’s important to you.
