The Verdict

Comparing Casper and Leesa, both are well-known brands that produce high-quality mattresses. Both brands offer foam mattresses, hybrid mattresses, and memory foam hybrids. Leesa also has a plus-sized mattress designed specifically for heavier sleepers.

Casper has a firmness range between Soft (4.5) and Medium-Firm (6.5). Leesa has a slightly wider spread, ranging from Soft (4) to Firm (8). If you’re specifically looking for a soft or firm feel, Leesa will be the better choice.

But dollar for dollar, Casper is the lower-priced option. The average cost of a Casper mattress is $1,213 and the average cost of a Leesa is $1,573. This means sleepers can expect to save about $360 by opting for Casper.

But the savings do come at a cost. Casper has the lower overall performance average between the two. Casper’s average overall score is 8.39, and Leesa’s average overall score is 8.96.

For reference, the average score across all 330+ mattresses tested to date is 8.55. This means that Casper generally scores below average and Leesa mattresses score above average.

Which Mattress Should You Buy?

The mattresses earning the title for “best overall” from each brand have the highest overall performance. Overall performance is determined by scores from 8 different categories including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex performance, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company.

Sinkage and bounce are also taken into consideration, but they are not direct scoring factors.

Between Casper and Leesa, the two top recommendations are Casper Dream and Leesa Sapira.

Its medium-firm feel makes this mattress comfortable for sleepers of all sleeping positions and most body weights.

This mattress overall performance ranks among the top 2% of all mattresses tested to date and the price is value-packed—only $1599 for a queen. Performance categories that earn a perfect 10/10 include: Cooling, Motion Transfer, and Pressure Relief. This mattress excels in many categories, giving the mattress a balanced feel with quality materials. The Sapira is among the top 5 best hybrids we’ve tested to date.

If you’re looking for a performance hybrid that is suitable for a wide range of sleepers, I’d recommend the Casper Dream and Leesa Sapira. These two mattresses represent the best of the best from both Casper and Leesa and come at very similar price points.

When we look at these two mattresses side by side, we do note a few differences. The biggest difference is that the Leesa Sapira has a higher overall performance, 9.5 on the Sapira vs. 8.63 on the Dream.

In terms of feel, the Casper has minimal sinkage and high bounce with a medium-firm feel (6 out of 10 on our firmness scale). The Sapira has moderate sinkage with very high bounce and a medium-firm feel (6 out of 10 on our firmness scale).

The extra bounce gives the Leesa a better sex score, undoubtedly. Leesa also takes the win for lower levels of motion transfer, faster material responsiveness, and unmatched pressure relief. Leesa is also backed by a lifetime warranty.

For side sleepers, my top recommendations would be the Casper Dream Max and Leesa Legend. Both of these mattresses have a good degree of contour and are on the softer side. Side sleepers benefit from mattresses with thicker comfort layers and excellent pressure relief. Both of these mattresses scored a 9/10 in our pressure relief tests.

The Casper has an overall score of 8.68 and a steep price tag, $2,495 for a queen mattress. Regarding feel, the Dream Max has deep sinkage, very high bounce, and a soft firmness (4.5 out of 10).

The Leesa Legend has an overall score of 9.21 (better than Casper), and a price that is lower than Casper ($2,079), although also more expensive than average. The Legend has minimal sinkage, high bounce, and a Medium firmness (5 out of 10).

If you typically sleep on your back or stomach, you’ll want to opt for something with less sinkage. I’d recommend the Casper Dream or the Leesa Sapira.

Both of these mattresses are hybrids with a medium-firm feel. They also have a similar price point (around $1500 for a queen-sized mattress). The Casper has minimal sinkage with high bounce and the Leesa has moderate sinkage with very high bounce. Depending on what exactly you’re looking for, either one of these mattresses can be a suitable choice.

I will note, if you’re concerned with pressure relief, go for the Sapira. The Leesa earned a pressure relief score of 10/10 while the Casper Dream could only secure a score of 8/10 in this category.

Heavy people benefit most from mattresses specifically designed for plus-sized bodies. Casper doesn’t have a mattress specifically designed for heavier sleepers, but Leesa has the Leesa Plus Hybrid. The Casper Dream is the best option from Casper, despite not technically being a “plus-sized” mattress.

What makes the Leesa Plus Hybrid great for heavier sleepers is the thicker 13″ profile, medium-firm feel (6), and great edge support (9/10). This mattress also has fantastic pressure relief and great cooling. It has a balanced feel with moderate sinkage and bounce.

The Casper Dream has a slightly lower overall performance and a slightly higher price tag—$1,495 for a queen, which is 13% more than the Leesa. It does have lower levels of motion transfer than Leesa, while retaining the same 9/10 pressure relief score and Medium-Firm (6) feel.

If cooling is a top priority for you, my top recommendations would be the Casper Snow and Leesa Sapira. Both of these mattresses earned a 10/10 for exceptional cooling performance.

Both of these mattresses are hybrids, which use a bit of comfort foam with pocketed coil bases.

The Casper Snow is an 11.5″ hybrid with a medium firmness (5). It has deep sinkage and moderate levels of bounce. Specifically for cooling, the Casper Snow has a phase-change infused cover, cooling “bands”, and a spray-on phase-change foam treatment. Each of these features contribute to the cool feel of this mattress.

The Leesa Sapira, on the other hand, is an 11″ hybrid with a medium-firm feel (6). It has moderate sinkage and very high bounce. Leesa has lower levels of motion transfer, faster material responsiveness, better sex score, and better pressure relief.

For sleepers on a tight budget, I’d recommend the Casper One or Leesa Original. Both of these mattresses are priced well below average for hybrid mattresses, right around $1,000. But between these two, the Leesa Original has significantly better overall performance than the Casper One.

For a more affordable Leesa, check out the Leesa Studio. The Studio is a 10″ foam mattress with a medium-firm feel (6), moderate sinkage, and low bounce. This mattress is only $639 for a queen, but the overall performance is 8.46.

If you struggle with back pain, my top picks would be the Casper Dream or the Leesa Reserve. Sleepers who have back pain need exceptional pressure relief, minimal to moderate sinkage, and a decent amount of comfort material.

The Casper Dream is an 11.5″ hybrid with an overall score of 8.63, a medium-firm (6) feel, minimal sinkage, and high bounce.

The Leesa Reserve is a 14″ hybrid with an overall score of 9.03, three optional firmnesses (soft, medium, or slightly firm), moderate sinkage, and low bounce.

Leesa is the better option in terms of performance, but it also costs nearly $3K, so be prepared to pay for that next-level comfort.

For couples looking for a mattress that enhances sex performance, I’d recommend the Casper Dream Max and Leesa Original Hybrid.

For the best sex performance, we’re looking for high bounce, supportive edges, good cooling, good pressure relief, and minimal noise.

The Casper Dream Max has a sex score of 9.7, excelling in all sub-categories listed above. The Leesa Original Hybrid earns a sex score of 9.5, just slightly behind the Casper but still well-above average. For reference, the average sex score across over 330+ mattresses tested to date is 8.3.

If you’re looking for a soft feel, I’d recommend the Casper Dream Max and Leesa Sapira Chill (Soft). Both of these mattresses have a soft firmness.

The Casper Dream Max has deep sinkage and very high bounce for an all-encompassing soft feel. In contrast, the Leesa Sapira Chill has moderate sinkage and high bounce. If you want a soft feel, but don’t want to feel too enveloped, the Sapira Chill will likely be the better pick.

If you’re looking for the highest-performing mattress with a medium-firm feel, I would opt for the Casper Dream and Leesa Sapira.

Between these two, the Leesa is the better performer (9.50 on Leesa vs. 8.63 on the Casper) and they are priced within $100 of each other.

The Casper Dream has minimal sinkage and high bounce. Meanwhile, the Leesa Sapira has moderate sinkage and very high bounce. Depending on what you’re looking for specifically, either mattress could be a good pick.

The Leesa Sapira Chill (firm version), rated an 8 out of 10 firmness, is the best firm mattress in this comparison. Unfortunately, Casper does not have any mattress within their lineup that has a firm feel.

Casper Dream

Leesa Legend

Casper One

Leesa Original

Casper Snow

Leesa Sapira

The average cooling score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6.

The Casper Snow and Leesa Sapira are the only two mattresses to earn a 10/10 for cooling performance. Both of these mattresses are hybrids, which have a pocketed coil base and foam comfort layer. The Casper Snow also has an advanced cooling cover and phase-change materials that help cooling performance.

The Leesa Sapira matches the same level of cooling performance, despite not having these extra cooling features. Leesa does have the Leesa Sapira Chill, which also has a 10/10 cooling score and is designed for exceptional cooling.

Among the 6 mattresses compared in this review, the mattress with the worst cooling performance is the Casper One. Being the only all-foam mattress, this lower performance wasn’t a huge surprise, as all-foam mattresses tend to have worse cooling than hybrid mattresses.

Sinkage Test

Both Casper and Leesa have a matching average sinkage score of 2.0″. Casper has sinkage levels that are either minimal or deep and Leesa sinkage levels are minimal or moderate.

As you’d expect, if you’re looking for minimal sinkage, either brand could be acceptable. For moderate sinkage, opt for Leesa and for deep sinkage, the Casper will likely be best suited to you.

The average sinkage depth across all mattresses tested to date is 2.18″.

Back and stomach sleepers usually prefer less sinkage, which better maintains proper alignment of their spine. The Casper Dream (1.89″ at $1420), Casper One (1.77″ at $799), Leesa Original (2.09″ at $1059), all have less sinkage than average and are also priced under $1,500, making them attractive value picks.

Generally, side sleepers enjoy a deeper level of sinkage as that typically translates to better pressure relief and contour. For deeper sinkage, opt for the Casper Snow (2.36″ at $1,870).

Motion Transfer Test

For low motion transfer, Leesa takes the win over Casper. Leesa consistently puts up scores of 10/10 for low motion transfer, whereas Casper has a brand average motion transfer score of only 8.2.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding motion transfer.

The Casper with the lowest motion transfer is the Casper Snow, earning a score of 8.7 out of 10. This performance is better than average

Response Test

Material responsiveness is an important factor for any mattress and these two brands could not be more different. The Leesa has fantastic response times, securing an average response score of 9.6. For reference, the average Casper response score is only 8.3

All mattresses in this comparison have better response times than average, except for the Casper Snow. The Casper Snow took 2.8 seconds to be mostly recovered and 5.1 seconds for full recovery. These levels are significantly slower than average.

The mattresses with the absolute fastest material responses in this comparison include the Casper Dream, Casper One, and Leesa Legend. All three of these mattresses respond quickly and have foam layers that spring back to their original shape faster than average.

Bounce Test

While bounce is more of a preferential factor, there are some differences between how Casper and Leesa mattresses perform. Casper mattresses have either moderate or high bounce levels. By comparison, Leesa offers low, high, or very high.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding bounce.

Mattresses with more bounce than average include the Casper Dream (10.73″), Casper Snow (9.54″), Leesa Legend (11.57″), and the Leesa Sapira (12.67″).

Mattresses with less bounce than average include the Casper One (8.77″) and the Leesa Original (7.94″).

Mattresses with more bounce are better for ease of movement and increase sex performance. However, higher bounce also typically creates a higher level of motion transfer. So there are pros and cons when it comes to bounce.

Edge Support Test

Edge support has a wider spread of performance between these two brands. Casper mattresses can have edge support that is better or worse than average. And Leesa falls in a similar camp. Between the two brands, the average Casper edge support score of 8.8 and the average Leesa edge support score dips to 7.8.

Leesa Sapira Edge Support

The average edge support score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6.

Among all six mattresses tested, the Casper Snow has the most impressive edge support, with only 3.25″ sitting sinkage and excellent support when lying. This gives the Snow an edge support score of 9.4.

For comparison, the best Leesa edge support comes from the Leesa Legend and the Leesa Original, both of which have an edge support score of 8.0. These two mattresses have 5.50″ of sitting sinkage, far less impressive than the Casper Snow.

Leesa Original Sinkage

The mattress with the worst sitting edge support is the Leesa Sapira, which had 6.25″ of sinkage when seated. And the mattress with the worst lying support is the Casper One.

The Casper One lacks a coil base, which is arguably its biggest disadvantage when it comes to edge support.

Sex Test

Looking at sex performance, Casper takes a narrow win here. Casper’s average sex score of 8.8 and Leesa’s average sex score is 8.6. This score is generated by analyzing 5 different factors—bounce, edge support, cooling, pressure relief, and noise.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding sex.

The average sex score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.3.

The Casper Dream (9.1), Casper Snow (8.9), Leesa Legend (9.0), and Leesa Sapira (9.1) all have better sex performance than the average mattress. These mattresses exhibit higher levels of bounce and / or better edge support.

Casper Dream Edge Sitting
Casper Dream Edge Sitting

The Casper One and Leesa Original are all-foam mattresses with average and below-average sex performance, respectively. These mattresses have lower levels of bounce, which is one of the biggest disadvantages of these picks.

Without the pocketed base, bounce is heavily restricted on these mattresses, and the result is less impressive for amorous activities.

Pressure Relief Test

Pressure relief can be a very important factor to consider, especially for side sleepers, as sleeping on your side can cause painful pressure points. Between Casper and Leesa, Leesa is the clear winner.

Leesa mattresses have an average pressure relief score of 9.3 and the average pressure relief score of Casper mattresses is 7.7. This is a significant difference between these two brands, but that being said, each brand does still offer at least one mattress with above-average performance.

All mattresses in this comparison have better-than-average pressure relief except for the Casper One, which was really lacking in this category (6.0).

Typically speaking, pressure relief has a strong correlation to the thickness of the comfort layer. A thicker comfort layer (paired with a thicker support layer) is one of the most effective ways to see improved pressure relief on a mattress.

This is especially true for side sleepers who may engage more deeply in mattress layers, especially in areas of high pressure like the hips and midsection.

The mattress with the best pressure relief is the Leesa Sapira, which scored a 10/10 for pressure relief. This mattress has a 4.0″ comfort layer and a 7.0″ support layer.

Comparatively, the Casper One lacks in this area. This mattress only has a 3.0″ comfort layer, which makes it more difficult to experience exceptional pressure relief.

Off-Gassing Test

Off-gassing is generally faster on Leesa mattresses compared to Casper mattresses. Leesa mattresses earned an average off-gassing score of 8.8 and have an off-gassing duration between 3-6 days. By comparison, Casper mattresses earned an off-gassing score of 6.3 and have an off-gassing duration between 8-20 days.

If you’re sensitive to strong odors, the Leesa will likely be the better option for you and certainly has the faster off-gassing between the two brands.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding off-gassing.

The mattress with the absolute fastest off-gassing is the Leesa Original, which fully off-gassed within 3 days (over 50% faster than average).

Among all mattresses tested to date, the average trial length is 171 nights and the average warranty is 13 years, excluding 41% of mattresses that offer lifetime warranties.

Both Casper and Leesa have a 100-night trial period, free shipping, and free returns.

The biggest difference between the two brands is the warranty. Leesa offers a lifetime warranty, while Casper provides only a 10 year warranty. Certainly, the longer lifetime warranty is better than 10 year warranty.

Lastly, Casper has earned a good trust score, while Leesa has earned an outstanding trust score. Both are solid scores, but even so, I do have a high degree of trust with Leesa as a brand.
