Derek Hales

Written by: Derek Hales

Updated On:

The cost of a Queen mattress can vary widely based on numerous factors including material quality, mattress type, and specialized features (ie: advanced cooling, flippable layers, etc.)

The average price of a Queen-sized mattress in the US is $1,537 (based on the average of the 4 most popular types; innerspring, foam, latex, and hybrid).

In this guide, we’ve rounded up a list of the best Queen mattresses at varying price points and we’re going to dive in.

In This Guide
Mattress Price By Type | Under $500 | Under $1000 | Under $1500 | Under $2000 | Over $2000

Mattress Price By Type

At NapLab, we’ve tested over 130 mattresses to date and a wide variety of types. Mattress type is one of the most important factors that determine the price.

Material cost, construction labor, shipping weight, etc. all play a part in the overall mattress cost.

The table below calculates the average price for each mattress type. The “Sample Size” column on the far right indicates the number of mattresses we tested in this category.

Mattress TypeAverage PriceSample Size
Foam$91314
Kids$9264
Canada$1,1558
Foam – Memory Foam$1,24217
Plus-Sized$1,2684
Hybrid$1,29850
Memory Foam Hybrid$1,3605
Latex Hybrids$1,50012
Natural / Organic$1,52313
Foam – Latex$1,7392
Coil$1,7892
Specialty$2,4906

As you can see, foam mattresses are generally one of the least expensive kinds of mattresses you can buy, ranging between $913 – $1,242. Mattresses that blend different foam types are often the most affordable, followed by memory foam being slightly more expensive.

Hybrids come in next on the list ranging from $1,298 – $1,500. This would include all classes of hybrids—memory foam, hybrid, latex hybrids, or a mix of materials.

Natural or organic mattresses are going to cost $1,523 on average for a Queen-sized bed. Organic materials typically cost more to procure and don’t take cost-saving shortcuts in quality.

Priced slightly beyond organic mattresses including latex foam mattresses, priced at $1,739 on average. Latex foam falls in the “natural” category as the foam is made from liquid latex sap harvested from rubber trees. But that being said, not all natural latex foam mattresses are organic.

Coil mattresses (ie: innerspring, pocketed coils, coil-on-coil, etc.) cost an average of $1,789. Metal coils or spring material is usually more expensive than foam materials.

High performance coil matatresses can be more labor-intensive to produce and can be costlier to ship as well. The result makes coil mattresses 49% more expensive than the average foam mattress.

As you may expect, specialty mattresses top the chart with an average of $2,490 for a Queen. The average is a conservative assessment based on a wide range of specialty mattress prices.

Based on our data, specialty mattresses can be as affordable $1,299 for the Purple Hybrid up to $3,499 for the Purple Premier Hybrid 4.

Sleeper Body Type

The prices above reflect different price tiers based on mattress materials. But there are also tiers based more on sleeper body type. Most sleepers fall into one of three categories:

  1. Kids
  2. Adult
  3. Plus-Sized
Crafted Sleep 2-Sided Hybrid edge support - sitting

Any of the mattresses mentioned in this guide would be suitable for the widest population of general adult sleepers. If you are shopping for a mattress for a child or if you’re a plus-sized sleeper, you may find that the needs are different.

For these sleepers, we have broken down prices in the table below:

Mattress TypeAverage PriceSample Size
Kids$9264
Plus-Sized$1,2684

Mattresses for kids are $926 on average, but it’s important to note here that not all kids’ mattresses are available in a Queen. Of these four mattresses reviewed, only one mattress came in a queen (5 Little Monkeys) and all other mattresses max out at a full.

For comparison, a full mattress is 15″ narrower and 5″ shorter than a Queen mattress.

Mattresses for plus-sized sleepers are $1,269 on average. While the exact materials on these mattresses can vary, it’s important to note that a mattress for plus-sized sleepers tends to have a few weight-specific advantages. These mattresses oftentimes have thicker comfort layers, a slightly firmer feel, improved edge support, better support layers, and a thicker overall profile.

Best Queen Mattresses Under $500

For a Queen mattress under $500, you can still get a variety of mattress types. Our top scorers include a mix of hybrids, memory foam, and poly foam mattresses.

Mattresses less than $500 can be good, but not great in terms of performance. If you’re willing you sacrifice a few inches, you may be better off selecting a higher-scoring mattress in a smaller size.

BUDGET HACK: Full mattresses will almost always be less expensive than a Queen mattress and still comfortably sleeps 1-2 adults (definitely a tighter fit for couples). If you don’t need the wider footprint of a queen, opting for full can get a higher quality mattress with the same budget.

Best Queen Mattresses Over $2,000

The benefit of a mattress over $2,000 is going to be that specialty materials or other unique features.

How Much Should You Spend on A Queen Mattress?

As you can see, there’s a huge range of price points for any queen mattress. Mattress type plays a big role in the overall price, but other factors like material quality, thickness, and company terms also can contribute to price changes.

Mattress Price Vs Performance
Mattress Price Vs Performance

The table above shows the connection we found between price and performance. This data was taken from the top-performing Queen mattresses within each price tier.

As you can see, up until the $2,000 price tier, spending more money, gets you a better mattress. Beyond $2,000, we saw a slight dip in performance, but also the presence of some specialty materials or systems that are not available in the lower price tiers.
