Best For

  • Exceptionally good cooling performance
  • Lightning-fast response time. Tied for the fastest with a handful of other mattresses (3 of which include other Purple models)
  • Low motion transfer

Considerations

  • Very high bounce. Gives it a more traditional feel and it’s good for sex, but could be too bouncy for some
  • Performance is impressive, but the price is high as a result.

Our Verdict

The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 is a hybrid mattress, much like the regular Purple Hybrid. It uses the patented Purple hyper-elastic polymer grid, which is designed for bounce, fast response, low motion transfer, and maximum airflow.

The blend of foam, grid, and pocketed coils creates a balanced feel with a medium firmness (6 out of 10). This means that a wider range of sleepers should find this mattress to be comfortable, regardless of sleeper weight or preferred position.

In our tests, we found the cooling performance to be truly exceptional. One of the best we’ve tested to date. The Premier 3 does an excellent job at relieving pressure, contouring to bodies, maintaining supportive edges, and staying incredibly cool while sleeping.

Firmness: Medium-Firm (6)

NOTE: In 2023, the Hybrid and Hybrid Premier were effectively discontinued and replaced with the Restore collection. The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 got a new name (the Purple RestorePlus Hybrid) and an updated design, although the models appear to be very similar.

How is Purple Hybrid Premier Different?

Compared to the average across over 160+ mattresses tested to date, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 has better performance than average, but also a higher price tag.

Compared to other specialty mattresses, Purple is 15% more costly. And compared to traditional hybrid mattresses with a comparable overall score, Purple costs nearly twice the amount. So there’s a considerable jump in price there.

Purple Hybrid Premier 3 mattress materials

Regarding performance, Purple had above average performance for cooling, lower levels of motion transfer, faster material response time, and better sex performance.

Edge support is about average as well as the overall mattress thickness.

The Purple mattress only comes with a 100-night trial which is 40% less than the average trial length of 164 nights. The 10-year warranty is also a bit shorter than the average as well.

Considering preferential factors, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 has average sinkage and slightly deeper levels of bounce ( 56% higher than average).

Cooling Test

Cooling performance on the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 was exceptional. Our objective testing data showed the mattress reached a maximum surface level temperature of 88.1°F.

This is the 3rd coolest mattress we’ve tested to date and 2.9° cooler than the average across all mattresses we’ve tested (which is 91.0°F). Heat dissipation is equally as exceptional.

  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

Within 1 minute after we got off the mattress the surface temperature declined from 88.1 degrees to 84.2°F, a decrease of 3.9°.

On average across all mattresses we’ve tested, the surface temperature is 87.2°F after 1 minute. To reach 84.2°F within 1 minute is truly impressive.

By the 2-minute mark, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 reaches 82.9°F, after which there is only a minor heat decrease between 3 and 5 minutes.

This indicates that within 2 minutes all heat has fully dissipated from the mattress, which is an extremely rare achievement.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Our subjective experience with the mattress matched our data. The mattress felt exceptionally cool and breathed well. All of the above makes sense when you look at the design of the mattress.

The top layer of Purple hyper-elastic polymer material both doesn’t retain heat. In addition, the grid pattern allows for an incredible level of airflow. These factors combine to create one of the coolest mattresses we’ve tested to date.

Sinkage Test

In our pressure point tests, we measured a sinkage depth of 2.21”. This is only slightly more than the average across all mattresses we’ve tested to date, which is 2.16”.

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Purple Hybrid Premier 3 sinkage test
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 sinkage test

A sinkage depth of 2.21” can be considered a moderate depth and is well suited to most body types.

It’s enough to create a nice level of pressure relief, contour, and hug, but not too deep so as to create new problems (spinal alignment, support, etc.).

10

Motion Transfer Test

Overall motion transfer was low, very low in fact. In our accelerometer tests, we measured a total acceleration range of just 3.45 m/s².

On average, the acceleration range is 5.75 m/s² (based on all mattresses we’ve tested to date). So a range of 3.45 is both incredibly low and notably better than the average.

The level of motion transfer is documented in the video below.

While the total range is low, I will say that the motion does linger on the mattress for longer than expected (or is ideal).

Our motion transfer chart shows the initial spike within the first 0.3 seconds, but a notable motion level persists up until 1.5 seconds. This is definitely on the long side.

Granted, it’s a very low level of lingering motion, but not quite as close to zero as I prefer to see. Purple hyper-elastic polymer grid is the most likely culprit here.

How Does The Grid Help? How Does It Hurt?

The grid works as a unit, which is great when we’re talking about contour and support, but not so great when you want the absolute lowest motion possible. All of that said, motion transfer is still quite low.

I think for the vast vast majority of sleepers the level of motion will be a total non-issue. However, if you or your partner are hypersensitive to motion you may want to consider an all-foam mattress (which keeps the acceleration range low and the motion duration short).

Leesa Original (2.06 m/s²), Nectar Premier Copper (1.88 m/s²), and Layla Hybrid (2.45 m/s²) are a few of the mattresses that edge out the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 when it comes to motion.

10

Response Test

Response time on the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 mattress was lightning fast. Within 0.2 seconds most of the materials have recovered and by 0.3 seconds the remaining materials have rebounded to their original shape.

Mostly Recovered

0.2 sec.

Complete Recovery

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

This is basically as fast as it gets. The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 mattress is tied with a handful of other mattresses for the fastest-responding mattress we’ve tested to date.

Among the other, fastest-response mattresses include the original Purple, Purple Hybrid, EcoSleep Hybrid Luxe, Helix Plus, and Ghostbed Luxe.

Bounce Test

The bounce on the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 mattress is high, very high in fact. In our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 15.08”.

Max. Depth

5.02″

Max. Rebound

10.06″

Total Bounce

This isn’t the absolute highest we’ve ever measured, but it’s top 5.

In addition, it’s 67% more bounce than average among all mattresses we’ve tested to date (which is a height of 9.0”).

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

The combination of hyper-elastic polymer plus pocketed coils deliver a huge bounce. More or less bounce is more of a preferential factor.

More bounce will give the mattress a more traditional feel, and make it easier to move around on. Also, it’s a huge factor for sex also (which we discuss in-depth below).

9.4

Edge Support Test

Overall, I found edge support on the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 to be good. In our tests, we measured a maximum compression of 4.25”.

Max. Sinkage

4.25″

Lying Support

Excellent

This is better than the average compression depth of 4.82”. When it comes to edge support, less compression is almost always better. However, I’m pleased if it’s within the 4.0’ish inch range.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Since there’s 3.0” of Purple material on top it makes sense that there’s a little more compression, as that material naturally gives way with just a moderate amount of pressure.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

With respect to edge support while lying, I found the support to be excellent. Even when lying directly on the edge of the mattress I felt well supported.

9.8

Sex Test

The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.

These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce60%10Extremely High
Edge Support20%9.4Very Good
Noise10%9Moderate
Pressure Relief5%9.5Excellent
Cooling5%10Exceptional

For the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, these individual factors generated a sex score of 9.8.

For ‘the dance with no pants’, the Premier 3 scores among the absolute best we’ve seen. Individual experiences may vary, but the Premier does a lot of stuff right.

Purple Hybrid Premier 3 sinkage
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 sinkage

First, the high bounce levels are incredible and good bounce generally makes for good sex. Edge support is not the absolute best, but definitely good enough to not be a real hindrance in this category.

Being a hybrid, and using the open-cell grid design, you may find that the Purple is a bit noisier than other hybrids and certainly noisier than an all-foam mattress. But even so, it’s not terrible.

What it lacks in discretion, it makes up for in exceptional bounce, cooling, fast response time, and pressure relief.

9.5

Pressure Relief Test

Pressure relief is excellent on this mattress. The Purple hyper-elastic polymer material does much of the heavy lifting.

Comfort Layer

4.0″

Support Layer

8.0″

The material easily gives way and contours to your unique body shape, even with relatively lighter body parts (like head, arms, feet, etc).

As a result, light, moderate, and heavy-weight body types are able to experience an even level of contour and excellent pressure relief.

The foundational layer of pocketed coils helps to ensure deep support is maintained also. All things considered, I have no complaints when it comes to pressure relief.

Company

The company score takes a look at factors that may influence your experience with the mattress.

Factors include length of the trial period, warranty, shipping / return costs, and country of origin.

The company policies of Purple are good and look pretty consumer-friendly. They offer a 100-night trial period, 10-year warranty, and free shipping and returns.

All of their mattresses are made in Utah, right here in the US, at a series of different fabrication centers across the state.

Shipping is free and returns are free. Purple does require that you keep the mattress for three weeks before applying for a return. This gives your body a chance to adjust to the mattress.

This “break-in period” is not uncommon in the mattress industry. Oftentimes, companies require a full 30-day window so the 21-day window is a little shorter than the standard.

Can You Talk to A Real Person?

If you have questions before purchasing, they also have a live chat feature on their website, but I found feedback to be a little slow.

I asked a few questions about the mattress to test out support speed and it took over 20 minutes for a representative to respond to my request.

That being said, that only happened the first time that I reached out. The second time, there was a representative within five minutes. But when I asked what year the mattress was launched, the representative did not know the answer.

This may not be a critical buying factor for you, but worth mentioning if you rely on live chats to ask questions before making a purchase (or after).

How firm is the Purple Hybrid Premier 3?

The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 comes in at a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm.

firmness - 6 out of 10 - medium

This is a medium firmness that a wide range of sleepers will find comfortable. This includes lightweight and heavy sleepers as well as sleepers who enjoy sleeping on their stomach, side, or back.

Support & Sleeping Positions

For reference, check out the table below. Find your weight and sleeping position in the chart. The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could be a good pick for sleepers who meet the profiles below:

Sleeper WeightStomach SleepersSide SleepersBack Sleepers
Under 150 lbs.YesYesYes
150-250 lbs.Yes YesYes
250-300 lbs.YesYesYes

Over 300 lbs? According to Purple, there is no weight limit that the Purple will support although they do recommend 300 pounds per person or 600 pounds total. That being said, exceeding this recommendation will not void the 10-year warranty.

If you are over recommend I’d suggest checking out the Purple Hybrid Premier 4 instead. The extra thick top layer provides better performance for heavier bodies.

Design

The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 shares many design similarities with the standard Purple Hybrid, but has one main difference—the thickness of the Purple grid.

The Premier 3 has a 3″ grid while the standard Hybrid has only a 2″ grid. For further comparison, the Premier 4 has a 4″ grid.

Materials

Here is a complete breakdown of all of the materials from top to bottom:

  • 1.0″ poly foam
  • 7.5″ pocketed coils
  • 1.0″ poly foam

The Cover

The cover of the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 is a textile blend of polyester (67%), Viscose (29%), and Lycra (all +/- 5%). These three materials are knit together to create a cover fabric that is soft and breathable, with some good stretch.

The color of the cover is gray on the bottom and white on the top with diagonal accents. Dark gray linework adds some visual interest and breaks up the white, but overall, it’s pretty simple.

The Comfort Layer

The comfort layer on the Purple Hybrid is made up of the 3.0″ layer of elastic polymer followed by a 1.0″ layer of poly foam directly below.

Purple Hybrid Premier 3 foam border

The edges of the grid are wrapped with a 4.0″ thick piece of foam to reinforce the edges as well as help the grid keep its shape.

Below the grid is a 1.0″ layer of denser poly foam. This foam serves as a transitional layer between the grid and the pocketed coils.

The image above shows the connection between the poly foam and the coils below. But we have cut through the Premier 3 foam in the name of science.

Out of the box, the Premier 3 will look like an all-foam mattress from the side, as shown below.

The 3.0″ grid combined with the 1.0″ of poly foam creates 4.0″ of comfort material, which should be more than sufficient for most sleepers, regardless of weight and position.

The Support Layer

The support layer is below the Purple grid and supports the bulk of sleeper weight, as they engage with materials beyond the grid.

Purple Hybrid Premier 3 coil layer

These coils are 7.5″H and each one is individually encased in fabric. This technique of using coils helps limit motion transfer, mitigate sound, and improve pressure relief.

Below the coils is a final 1.0″ layer of poly foam which is a high-density foam that supports the upper layers of the mattress.

Product Evolution

The Purple mattress was first launched in 2015, starting as a modest initiative Kickstarter campaign raising a little over $170,000 and having only 320 backers.

From there, the Original Purple was born, which was (and still is) a 10″ mattress made exclusively from foam and the patented Purple hyper-elastic polymer grid.

Purple Hybrid Premier 3 mattress

Once off the ground, Purple relied on word of mouth and aggressive, heavily-funded marketing campaigns to generate a massive following. In 2020, they spent over 220 million dollars on marketing and advertising alone.

From the success of the Original Purple mattress, the Purple Hybrid, and Hybrid Premier 3 and 4 were launched around 2018 and have continued to gain popularity.

In 2023, the Hybrid and Hybrid Premier were effectively discontinued and replaced with the Restore collection. Here is what the updated names look like:

While design changes between the old models and new models look to be minimal, we will be testing the new 2023 Purple mattresses soon and will update this section with our findings.
