Best For

  • Value hybrid under C$1,000
  • Excellent pressure relief, without too much sinkage
  • Great for couples—fantastic sex performance and above-average motion transfer

Considerations

  • Longer off-gassing duration (14 days); 2X longer than the average (7 days)
  • Minimal sinkage may not be right for all sleepers
  • Only available in Canada

Our Verdict

The Douglas Original Hybrid is a 12.00″ hybrid mattress made of poly foam, pocketed coils, and support foam. It is only available in Canada.

The Douglas Original Hybrid is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm. In our firmness tests, this is a 6 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm.

This mattress has minimal sinkage and very high levels of bounce. There is a balanced level of contour. If you like a more active feel or fear being “stuck” in layers of slow recovery foam, the Douglas is a great option to consider.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 9.07, ranking the mattress in the top 16% of all mattresses tested to date.

The Douglas Original Hybrid is C$949 for a queen-sized mattress, which is considerably less expensive than the average hybrid mattress we’ve tested. When we consider the significantly better than average performance alongside the very reasonable price point it’s fair to say the Douglas Original Hybrid is an extraordinarily good value mattress.

How is Douglas Original Hybrid Different?

The Douglas Original Hybrid is a 12.00″ hybrid mattress with an overall performance level that is higher than average and a price tag that is higher than average as well.

Advantages

The Douglas Original Hybrid scores above average in all testing categories except for off-gassing. The means above average performances in cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex, pressure relief, and company policies (trial, warranty, returns, etc).

Neutral Factors

This mattress has minimal sinkage and very high levels of bounce. While these factors are mostly neutral, they do create a more specific type of a feel.

If you enjoy sleeping more “in” the mattress instead of “on” the mattress, then this mattress may not be the best choice. Likewise, if you prefer lower levels of bounce, you may not enjoy this mattress.

Douglas Original Hybrid Relaxing
Douglas Original Hybrid Relaxing

For sleeping “on” the mattress, high bounce, and a more active, buoyant feel, the Douglas Original Hybrid is a good choice.

Disadvantages

The only real disadvantage to the Douglas Original Hybrid is longer off-gassing. In our tests, this mattress off-gasses in 14 days, whereas the average is only 7 days.

9.0

Cooling Test

The Douglas Original Hybrid has excellent cooling. During our tests, I did not feel any significant level of heat retention around my body.

Baseline Temp.

78.7° F

Max. Temp.

90.5° F

Ending Temp.

82.6° F

This mattress uses a simple, but proven hybrid design. First up, we have a thin, non-quilted cover that’s woven with moisture-wicking fibers. That cover is highly breathable, allowing for better airflow and improved cooling as a result.

Max. Temp.

Ending Temp.

Douglas Original Hybrid After Cooling Test

  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

In addition, we have a gel-infused top poly foam comfort layer, which appears to breathe well and avoid heat retention.

Lastly, we have a support layer of pocketed coils, which is another layer that doesn’t absorb much heat, while also providing more airflow to the mattress at large.

In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 90.5° F. This is 0.3° warmer than the average of 90.2° F, based on all of our tests to date.

After getting off the mattress, the temperature declined by 3.8 degrees from minutes 0 to 1, which is 1.0 degrees less cool than the average 0 to 1 minute decline of 4.8 degrees.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Douglas Original Hybrid Heat Dissipation Chart

When we consider the combination of objective data, my subjective experiences, and an analysis of the materials, I’m confident in my view that cooling is excellent.

Sinkage Test

The Douglas Original Hybrid has minimal sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 1.82″. This is 0.43″ less sinkage than the average sinkage depth of 2.25″, based on all of our tests to date.

Sinkage Depth

1.82″

Sinkage Feel

Minimal

Body Contour

Balanced

The mattress creates a hug that rides the line between a more balanced feel and a feel that’s more floating “on” the mattress. With just 1.82” of sinkage depth, the body just doesn’t sink very far down.

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Douglas Original Hybrid Sinkage Test
Douglas Original Hybrid Sinkage Test

Instead, the mattress creates a more buoyant feeling where you lie more “on” the mattress instead of down “in” the mattress. This feeling is neither good nor bad, but it is a more specific feel.

To be comfortable with this sinkage and comfort dynamic, you’ll need to prefer more of the floating feel with a more nuanced and restrained type of a body hug.

If you prefer a big, dramatic body contouring hug, you will not enjoy the feel of the Douglas Original Hybrid.

8.7

Motion Transfer Test

The Douglas Original Hybrid has a low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 7.84 m/s². This is 11% less motion transfer than the average of 8.78 m/s².

Accel. Range

7.84 m/s²

Motion Duration

1.41 seconds

Typically, mattresses that have more bounce, as this one does, have a higher level of motion transfer. However, that’s not what we measured in our accelerometer tests.

The Douglas Original Hybrid did a fantastic job of creating ample bounce, while also keeping motion transfer in check. The mattress seems to do an unusually good job at isolating energy and motion to a small and localized area, as opposed to transferring it from one side of the mattress to the other.

In my view, this is a product of the solid material quality in general, but especially the quality of the pocketed coil unit.

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.2 seconds.

In addition, there is a small secondary energy spike from 0.6 to 0.7 seconds. By 1.41 seconds, we’ve returned to near-zero levels of energy, which is 0.52 seconds longer than the average motion duration of 0.89 seconds.

While the motion duration is notably longer than average, the motion intensity is slightly better than average.

Motion Transfer Over Time

Douglas Original Hybrid Motion Transfer Chart

When we consider the complete motion transfer picture I’m confident that most sleepers will find this level of motion more than satisfactory.

10

Response Test

The Douglas Original Hybrid has an extremely fast material response.

Mostly Recovered

0.2 sec.

Fully Recovered

0.3 sec.

In our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.2 seconds, which is 0.22 seconds faster than the average of 0.42 seconds, based on all of our tests to date.

In our fully recovered responsiveness test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.3 seconds, which is 0.73 seconds faster than the average of 1.03 seconds.

This is effectively an instant material recovery speed and it’s tied for 1st with the fastest responsiveness mattresses we’ve tested to date.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

The rapid material recovery speed ensures this mattress is easy to move around on and won’t create any type of stuck feeling.

Overall, I’m more than pleased with the level of response and I expect most sleepers will find it to be more than sufficient.

Bounce Test

The Douglas Original Hybrid has a very high level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 12.79″. This is 4.10″ more bounce than the average of 8.69″, based on all of our tests to date.

Max. Depth

5.56″

Max. Rebound

7.23″

Total Bounce

12.79″

This mattress utilizes an all poly-foam comfort layer, a thin, non-quilted cover, and a pocketed coil unit. The poly foams are highly responsive, springing back to shape effectively instantly.

The combination of highly resilient poly foams and coils, in addition to a thin cover that doesn’t impede bounce, creates the right environment for a very high level of bounce.

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

The considerably higher than average level of bounce helps to greatly improve sex and ease of movement. It’s also likely a contributing factor for motion transfer, which, while it was better than average, was also notably higher than what we tested on the higher-end Douglas Summit Hybrid.

9.2

Edge Support Test

The Douglas Original Hybrid has excellent sitting edge support and excellent lying edge support.

Max. Sinkage

3.50″

Lying Support

Excellent

In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 3.50″. This is 0.35″ less sitting sinkage than the average of 3.85″, based on all of our tests to date.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 140 lbs.

While lying directly on the edge of the mattress, I felt that the support was excellent in all sleeping positions. This mattress is equipped with a reinforced support foam that runs along the entire perimeter of the mattress. The foam is 3.5” wide and 8.0” tall.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

That extra support edge foam, in combination with high-quality materials throughout the mattress, is able to deliver fantastic edge support for both sitting and lying.

9.8

Sex Test

The Douglas Original Hybrid has excellent sex performance. Typically, we assess both pros and cons here; however, this mattress has no major negatives when it comes to sex.

Douglas Original Hybrid Edge Sitting
Douglas Original Hybrid Edge Sitting

In our tests, we found that noise was minimal with cooling and pressure relief, earning excellent scores. In addition, edge support also earned an excellent score with just 3.50” of sitting edge sinkage.

This is plenty of support and extends the usable surface area of the mattress, which is beneficial for amorous activities.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce65%10Extremely High
Edge Support20%9.4Excellent
Noise5%10Minimal
Pressure Relief5%9.0Excellent
Cooling5%9.0Excellent

Last, but certainly not least, we have an extremely high level of bounce. Bounce measured in at 12.79”. This is considerably more bounce than average.

When it comes to sex, more bounce is almost always better. The high level of bounce makes sex easier, less tiring, less strenuous, and more fun.

All factors considered, the Douglas Original Hybrid earns among the best sex scores we’ve tested to date.

9.0

Pressure Relief Test

The Douglas Original Hybrid has an excellent level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt no significant pressure points on my body.

Comfort Layer

3.00″

Support Layer

9.00″

The mattress is equipped with 3.0″ of comfort material, which is 1.31″ less comfort material than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.31″, based on all of our tests to date.

While the comfort layer is thinner than average, the quality of the foams is excellent (as confirmed in our foam density tests below). The Douglas Original Hybrid uses a thin, non-quilted cover that creates more direct engagement with the foam layers below.

The mattress has less sinkage and a more restrained body contouring hug.

Douglas Original Hybrid Materials
Douglas Original Hybrid Materials

This feel isn’t good or bad, but it is more specific. If you’re looking for a dramatic body contouring hug, this isn’t that mattress.

In our objective pressure mapping tests, we measured a max PSI of 0.52. This is well within the 1.0 PSI threshold that I ideally want to see for all mattresses.

When I consider our objective pressure mapping tests, material thickness, material quality, and my subjective experience on the mattress, I’m confident most sleepers will find the pressure relief to be excellent.

6.1

Off-Gassing Test

The Douglas Original Hybrid had a strong smell upon the initial unboxing. The mattress smelled for 14 days. This is 6.7 days longer than the average smell duration of 7.3 days.

How firm is Douglas Original Hybrid?

The Douglas Original Hybrid is available in a single firmness, 6 out of 10, which gives the mattress a medium-firm feel.

This firmness is suitable for the wide majority of sleepers.

Support & Sleeping Positions

Support on the Douglas Original Hybrid is excellent. During our tests, I felt well supported in all sleeping positions. The mattress is equipped with a 9.0″ support layer. This is 1.03″ thicker than the average support layer thickness of 7.97″, based on all of our tests to date.

Support FactorData
Comfort Layer 3.00″

Firmness Medium-Firm
Body Contour Balanced
Zoned Support Yes
Reinforced Edge Yes

For a mattress to create ideal support, it must fully support the body, creating a neutral spinal alignment, while at the same time creating ample comfort and pressure relief.

The Douglas achieves both of those requirements. In all mattress tests, we make a point to cut the mattress open to examine the material quality. In doing so, we found that the foams all look and feel high quality, both on the body and in-hand.

Douglas Original Hybrid Stomach Sleeping

In our foam density tests, we found the densities to be reasonably good, especially for the price point. Similarly, our coil gauge tests measured a 15.5-gauge coil thickness, which is perfectly reasonable within this design and price point.

Check out the table below to see the sleeper weights and sleeping positions that would be best suited for this mattress.

Sleeper WeightStomach SleeperSide SleeperBack Sleeper

Moving on, this mattress is only available in a single firmness, medium-firm. That’s a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale. This firmness is ideal for most sleepers and all sleeping positions.

Douglas uses a zoned coil unit with 3 support zones, including a firmer, more supportive set of coils in the center third of the mattress. Zoned support helps to improve overall mattress support and reduce sagging in the middle of the mattress.

Based on all of my tests to date, an analysis of the materials, and my subjective experiences, I’m confident that most sleepers will find support on the Douglas Original Hybrid excellent.
