Our Verdict

The Douglas Summit Hybrid is a Canada-made 14.00″ hybrid mattress with poly foam, pocketed coils, and a support foam base. It has a thin cover and provides sleepers with more of a sleeping “on” the mattress feel as opposed to sleeping down “in” the mattress feel.

The Douglas Summit Hybrid is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm. This is a 6 out of 10 in our firmness chart, where 10 is the most firm.

This mattress has minimal sinkage and high levels of bounce. The more restrained sinkage gives the mattress a more balanced contour, and the high bounce provides more pushback on the mattress.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 9.44, ranking the mattress in the top 1% of all mattresses tested to date.

The Douglas Summit Hybrid is C$1,449 for a queen-sized mattress, a very reasonable price for high quality hybrid mattress. Given the higher performance, the Summit is a fantastic value.

How is Douglas Summit Hybrid Different?

The Douglas Summit Hybrid is a 14.00″ hybrid mattress with an overall performance level that is well above average and a price point that is near the average (when compared to all US and Canadian mattress we’ve tested). All things considered, the Summit Hybrid is a great value.

Advantages

Specific advantages of the Summit Hybrid include better cooling performance, faster material response time, and better edge support.

Pressure relief is better than average as well, with a 5.0″ comfort layer and a thicker overall mattress thickness (14″).

The Summit Hybrid is great for couples with lower levels of motion transfer and high bounce (great for sex performance).

Neutral Factors

This mattress has minimal sinkage and a high level of bounce. Both of these factors are considered “neutral” as different sleepers may have different preferences in these areas.

Douglas Summit Hybrid Relaxing
Douglas Summit Hybrid Relaxing

Disadvantages

The only real disadvantage of the Summit Hybrid is a longer off-gassing duration. This mattress takes 14 days to fully off-gas, whereas 7 days is the average.

9.0

Cooling Test

The Douglas Summit Hybrid has excellent cooling. During our tests, I did not feel any significant level of heat retention around my body.

Baseline Temp.

78.6° F

Max. Temp.

89.5° F

Ending Temp.

82.7° F

This mattress is equipped with cooling fibers woven into the cover. Those fibers give the mattress a slight to moderate cool-to-the-touch feel.

While it doesn’t maintain all of that cooler feel for the duration of the cooling tests, the thin, non-quilted cover still remains breathable.

Max. Temp.

Ending Temp.

Douglas Summit Hybrid After Cooling Test
Douglas Summit Hybrid After Cooling Test
  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

In addition, we have high-quality poly foams, including the topmost gel-infused poly foam, that all seem to breathe well and avoid excess heat retention. Lastly, the base layer of pocketed coils brings plenty of airflow into the mattress.

In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 89.5° F. This is 0.7° cooler than the average of 90.2° F, based on all of our tests to date.

After getting off the mattress, the temperature declined by 4.3 degrees from minutes 0 to 1, which is 0.5 degrees less cool than the average 0 to 1 minute decline of 4.8 degrees.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Douglas Summit Hybrid Heat Dissipation Chart

When we consider the combination of objective data, my subjective experiences, and an analysis of the materials, I’m confident in my view that cooling is excellent.

Sinkage Test

The Douglas Summit Hybrid has minimal sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 1.98″. This is 0.27″ less sinkage than the average sinkage depth of 2.25″, based on all of our tests to date.

Body Contour

Balanced

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Douglas Summit Hybrid Sinkage Test
Douglas Summit Hybrid Sinkage Test

The mattress creates a balanced type of body contouring hug. The Summit Hybrid uses a simple, but proven hybrid design.

We have a thin cover that creates more direct engagement with the all poly foam comfort layer.

While the sinkage depth is thinner than average, it helps that the thin cover gets the body into more direct contact with the comfort foams.

Lastly, having a pocketed coil base helps to create a more even, balanced, and non-polarizing type of a feel that many types of sleepers will enjoy.

10

Motion Transfer Test

The Douglas Summit Hybrid has an extremely low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 4.97 m/s². This is 43% less motion transfer than the average of 8.78 m/s².

Accel. Range

4.97 m/s²

Motion Duration

1.06 seconds

The considerably lower than average motion is, in part, a product of the thicker than average comfort layer. Having more comfort foam helps to disperse and mitigate energy and motion.

However, the Summit Hybrid is also unusual in that it has higher than average bounce, while still maintaining lower motion transfer.

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

Seemingly, these particular poly foam formulations, in addition to the pocketed coil unit, seem to isolate motion and keep it localized (as opposed to spreading it across the mattress) to one small area better than many other mattresses.

In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.25 seconds. Motion declines thereafter, but we do see a small secondary energy spike from 0.6 to 0.7 seconds.

By 1.06 seconds, we’ve returned to near-zero levels of energy, which is 0.17 seconds longer than the average motion duration of 0.89 seconds.

Motion Transfer Over Time

Douglas Summit Hybrid Motion Transfer Chart

While motion duration is slightly worse than average, motion intensity is significantly less than average. As a result, the total motion transfer experience is fantastically low.

10

Response Test

The Douglas Summit Hybrid has an extremely fast material response. In our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.2 seconds, which is 0.22 seconds faster than the average of 0.42 seconds, based on all of our tests to date.

Mostly Recovered

0.2 sec.

Fully Recovered

0.3 sec.

In our fully recovered responsiveness test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.3 seconds, which is 0.73 seconds faster than the average of 1.03 seconds.

This is effectively an instant material recovery speed. The foams spring back to shape incredibly quickly after they have been compressed.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

The rapid material recovery speed means that ease of movement on the mattress is fantastic. You’ll never feel stuck or have difficulty moving around on, changing positions, or getting in / out of bed on the Douglas.

Bounce Test

The Douglas Summit Hybrid has a high level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 11.22″. This is 2.53″ more bounce than the average of 8.69″, based on all of our tests to date.

Max. Depth

5.63″

Max. Rebound

5.59″

Total Bounce

11.22″

The higher-than-average bounce is a product of the highly responsive, highly resilient all-poly-foam comfort layer, thin cover, minimal sinkage depth, and hybrid design.

These material and design attributes are working together to deliver an incredible level of mattress resiliency and high bounce. The higher bounce is beneficial for ease of movement and sex performance.

Max. Sinkage Depth

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

Higher bounce also typically means motion transfer is worse. However, that’s not what we measured in our motion tests.

Seemingly, the foam formulations and overall design allow the mattress to deliver high bounce, but localize that bounce and motion to one area, instead of spreading it across the mattress.

Suffice it to say, this type of bounce-to-motion transfer dynamic is quite rare and fantastic to have in a mattress.

9.2

Edge Support Test

The Douglas Summit Hybrid has excellent sitting edge support and excellent lying edge support.

Max. Sinkage

3.50″

Lying Support

Excellent

Reinforced Edge

Yes

In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 3.50″. This is 0.35″ less sitting sinkage than the average of 3.85″, based on all of our tests to date.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

While lying directly on the edge of the mattress, I felt that the support was excellent in all sleeping positions.

The Summit Hybrid utilizes a reinforced support foam running along the entire perimeter of the mattress. That support foam is 8” tall and 3.5” tall. This robust foam is more than thick and wide enough to make a sizable impact on edge support performance.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

The combination of reinforced edge support foam alongside a thicker-than-average total mattress height and high-performance materials throughout the mattress set the stage for solid edge support.

While edge support performance isn’t perfect, in my view, it’s more than good enough that most sleepers will find it to be a non-issue.

9.5

Sex Test

The Douglas Summit Hybrid has excellent sex performance. First, let’s talk through the negatives, of which there are none. The Summit Hybrid is a rare mattress that has no notable cons when it comes to sex performance.

Douglas Summit Hybrid Edge Sitting
Douglas Summit Hybrid Edge Sitting

The mattress creates minimal noise, has outstanding pressure relief, and excellent cooling. In addition, edge support is excellent. In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage edge of 3.50”.

This is better than average and ensures the edge is supportive enough for couples who utilize the full surface of the mattress for their amorous activities. Lastly, we have bounce, which we measured at 11.22”.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce65%9.5Very High
Edge Support20%9.4Excellent
Noise5%10Minimal
Pressure Relief5%10Outstanding
Cooling5%9.0Excellent

This is a considerably higher bounce than average, which is exactly what we want to see. When it comes to amorous activities, more bounce is almost always better.

The higher level of bounce makes the mattress easier, less tiring, and more fun to have sex on. All factors considered, the sex performance for the Douglas Summit Hybrid is fantastic.

10

Pressure Relief Test

The Douglas Summit Hybrid has an outstanding level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt no significant pressure points on my body. Quite the opposite as this mattress is incredibly comfortable.

Comfort Layer

5.00″

Support Layer

9.00″

In my view, it’s the best pressure-relieving experience across all 6 Douglas mattresses (tied with the all-foam Summit).

The mattress is equipped with 5.0″ of comfort material, which is 0.69″ more comfort material than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.31″, based on all of our tests to date.

Certainly, the thicker-than-average comfort layer is a part of the fantastic pressure relief. However, the quality of the comfort foams and this specific foam formulation are also major contributing factors.

Douglas Summit Hybrid Side Sleeping
Douglas Summit Hybrid Side Sleeping

In terms of quality, I’m pleased with what we measured in our foam density tests, with the top-most comfort foam measuring 2.64 PCF (see full tests here).

That’s not the most dense foam we’ve ever tested, but it’s a perfectly fine density for a poly foam. This mattress uses a thin, non-quilted cover, which allows the body to make more direct and intense contact with the foam layers below.

The comfort layer is all poly foam, which is all highly responsive, so you’ll never feel stuck. The foams create a more balanced, even, and non-polarizing feel that many different sleeper types and preferences can enjoy.

Lastly, in our objective pressure mapping tests, we measured a max PSI of 0.75, which is within the 1.0 PSI threshold I ideally want all mattresses to be within.

When I consider our objective pressure-mapping tests, material thickness, material quality, and my subjective experience on the mattress, I’m confident most sleepers will find the pressure relief outstanding.

How firm is Douglas Summit Hybrid?

The Douglas Summit Hybrid comes in a single firmness, 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, which creates a medium-firm feel.

Firmness Chart

This firmness and feel is generally suitable for a wide range of sleepers and preferences.

Support & Sleeping Positions

Support on the Douglas Summit Hybrid is outstanding. During our tests, I felt well supported in all sleeping positions.

The mattress is equipped with a 9.0″ support layer. This is 1.03″ thicker than the average support layer thickness of 7.97″, based on all of our tests to date.

Mattresses that create the best support are able to create a neutral spinal alignment for the body, while also creating ample pressure relief. Douglas achieves both of those requirements without any issues.

Support Layer 9.00″
Firmness Medium-Firm
Body Contour Balanced
Zoned Support Yes
Reinforced Edge Yes

The Summit Hybrid comes in a single firmness, medium-firm. That’s a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale. The vast majority of sleepers, among all sleeping positions, will find this firmness dynamic supportive and comfortable.

In our foam quality tests, we measured density levels that are all solid. Certainly, these aren’t the best or highest density we’ve ever tested, but they are not bad either, especially at this price point.

Douglas Summit Hybrid Stomach Sleeping

Likewise, our coil gauge tests measured a 15.5 gauge. This isn’t the absolute thickest coil wire we’ve tested, but it’s within the range that I prefer to see. All quality factors considered, I’m pleased with the foam density and coil gauge we tested (especially at this price point).

Lastly, this mattress uses zoned support. There are 3 zones, with the center third zone being more supportive than the head and foot zones. This helps to improve support where most sleepers carry more of their weight, which creates a more neutral spinal alignment, improves comfort, and improves mattress longevity.

Douglas Summit Hybrid Materials

There are 1,190 coils in a Queen-size. Based on all of my tests to date, an analysis of the materials, and my subjective experiences, I’m confident that most sleepers will find support on the Douglas Summit Hybrid to be outstanding.
