Best For
- Healthy materials; all-natural latex, organic wool, organic cotton
- Fantastic edge support for both sitting and lying
- Near-instant response, 0.3 seconds to mostly recovery
Considerations
- Higher bounce and fast response result in more motion transfer, but also better sex
- Pressure relief is good, but not great. Only 2.0” of comfort materials
Our Verdict
The Avocado Green mattress is a certified organic latex hybrid mattress. It has an 11″ profile with a 2″ comfort layer of natural latex and a 9″ support system of pocketed coils.
It has moderate sinkage and high bounce with a generalized contour around your body.
It comes in a single firmness of 6.5 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm, making it a good option for all sleeping positions and body types. However, lighter-weighted side sleepers may prefer something softer.
The Avocado mattress has an overall score of 9.00, ranking it in the top 20% compared to all mattresses tested to date. Looking specifically at latex hybrids, this mattress scores in the top 40%.
Concerning price, the Avocado Green mattress is $1799 for a queen, $199 more than the average latex mattress. While I would have liked to have seen better pressure relief at this price point, it’s still a solid buy.

How is the Avocado Different?
The Avocado mattress has better performance than average and is slightly more expensive than the average latex hybrid ($199 difference).
Advantages
The Avocado mattress has slightly higher cooling performance as well as lower levels of motion transfer, 12% lower levels than average.
It also has a slightly faster material response time and better edge support when sitting or lying directly on the edge.
Neutral Factors
This mattress has about average levels of sinkage and 20% more bounce than average. When these factors are more preferential than “good vs. bad”, they are still worth mentioning and certainly change the overall feel of the mattress.
Disadvantages
The Avocado mattress only has an 11″ thickness (1.0″ thinner than average) which can be problematic if you’re looking for exceptional pressure relief.
Cooling Test
The cooling performance on the Avocado mattress is excellent. During my tests, however, I felt slight heat retention around most of my body.
It wasn’t significant and it wasn’t isolated to any particular area of the body (usually we see heat build-up in the midsection).
Baseline Temp.
81.2° F
Max Temp.
90.5° F
Ending Temp.
82.4° F
Max Temp.
Ending Temp
- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
The Avocado’s more restrained and generalized level of sinkage and hug around the body likely reduces heat build-up in a single place. Even so, there was a definite slight build-up. Looking at the material design of the mattress, I was a little surprised the heat dissipation wasn’t better.
With only 2.0” of foam on top of coils that’s usually a design that creates plenty of cooling. Looking at our objective data, we see a maximum temperature of 90.5° F.
Given that our baseline temperature was 81.2°, a 90.5° max temperature isn’t excessively hot, but it’s further along the temperature scale than I expected.
Furthermore, it does help to explain my subjective experience. Looking at the heat dissipation curve, we saw a decline of 90.5 to 86.5° from the 0 to 1-minute mark. This is a decrease of 4.0°.
Heat Dissipation Over Time
On average, across all of our mattress tests to date, we see a 0 to 1-minute temperature drop of 4.7°.
So the Avocado is essentially average from 0 to 1 minute. From minutes 2 to 5 the temperature continued to gradually decline, ending at a temperature of 82.4°.
The drop in temperature from minute 0 to minute 5 is 8.1°. Mattresses with the best heat dissipation will release the majority of their retained heat within 1 minute.
The Avocado seems to hold onto the heat just a little bit more, only releasing 49.4% of heat by minute 1.
This isn’t a bad cooling performance, just not exceptional.
Sinkage Test
The Avocado Green mattress has a moderate level of sinkage. In our tests, we measured a sinkage depth of 2.19” on the Avocado Green mattress.
Sinkage Depth
2.19″
Sinkage Feel
Moderate
On average, across all of our mattress tests to date, we have measured 2.14” of sinkage. As a result, Avocado’s 2.19” is effectively perfectly average.
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.
It’s enough sinkage to allow the hips and midsection to drop enough to create better neutral spinal alignment, but not so deep as to create support problems.
Motion Transfer Test
The Avocado Green has a very low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 7.31 m/s². This is 17% less motion transfer than the average of 8.79 m/s².
Max. Acceleration
4.12 m/s²
Min. Acceleration
-3.19 m/s²
Accel. Range
7.31 m/s²
The level of motion transfer is documented in the video below.
In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.14 seconds.
By 1.35 seconds we’ve returned to near-zero levels of energy.
Natural latex as a material has a high level of bounce and response. Pocketed coils also have a high level of bounce and response. A medium-firm to slightly firm feel creates a higher level of bounce.
When you combine the natural latex, pocketed coils, and medium-firm feel together in a single mattress it’s no surprise that you’re going to end up with more motion transfer, but this is still better than average.
Response Test
The Avocado Green mattress has a very fast material response time.
In our tests, we measured a mostly recovered material response of 0.3 seconds. A full material recovery takes just 0.7 seconds.
Mostly Recovered
0.3 sec.
Complete Recovery
0.7 sec.
On average, based on all of our mattress tests to date, we see mattresses taking 0.4 seconds to mostly recover and 0.9 seconds for a full material recovery. Both of these measurements are quite a bit faster than the average.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
Both latex and pocketed coils are materials with incredibly quick response. The materials spring back to their original shape almost immediately.
Bounce Test
The Avocado Green has a high level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 11.54″. This is 2.03″ more bounce than the average of 9.53″, based on all of our tests to date.
Max. Depth
5.51″
Max. Rebound
6.03″
Total Bounce
11.54″
Max. Sinkage Depth
Max Bounce Height
The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
Higher bounce makes the mattress easier to move around on, in addition, it gives it a more traditional feel and makes it better for sex.
Ideally, I want to see 8-12″ of total bounce height.
With layers of natural latex and pocketed coils, it’s no surprise that the Avocado has quite a lot of bounce.
That bounce pays big dividends when it comes to sex. However, as we discussed earlier, it also makes motion transfer worse. It’s a sword that cuts two ways.
Edge Support Test
The Avocado Green has excellent sitting edge support and outstanding lying edge support.
Max Sinkage
3.25″
Lying Support
Outstanding
The Avocado mattress does a great job at creating plenty of support and pushback even when under direct sitting pressure at the edge. Edge support for lying is equally as impressive.
In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 3.25″. This is 0.79″ less sitting sinkage than the average of 4.04″, based on all of our tests to date.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.
Sitting, 200 lbs.
While lying directly on the edge of the mattress, I felt that the support was outstanding in all sleeping positions.
The mattress provides plenty of support in all sleeping positions. I felt equally as supported at the absolute edge as I did while lying in the center of the mattress.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.
Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.
Sex Test
Sex performance for the Avocado Green is excellent. Breaking down this score into five factors, we saw excellent (high) levels of bounce, outstanding edge support, and good pressure relief and cooling.
Being a hybrid, the Avocado is slightly noisier than a 100% foam mattress, but not as noisy as a classic innerspring.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Bounce | 65% | 9.7 | Very High |
Edge Support | 20% | 9.7 | Excellent |
Noise | 5% | 8.0 | Moderate |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 8.0 | Good |
Cooling | 5% | 9.0 | Excellent |
Pressure relief could have also been better, but that factor only makes up 5% of the sex score and isn’t a huge driver in overall sex performance.
Pressure Relief Test
The Avocado Green has a good level of pressure relief, but not great. Over the years, I’ve tested many natural and organic mattresses. In my view, there seems to be a fairly consistent feel on these mattresses, and pressure relief is often where they struggle.
Comfort Layer
2.0″
Support Layer
9.0″
This isn’t to say that an organic or more natural mattress cannot deliver deeper pressure relief, only that the natural materials required to do so increase the cost of the mattress.
For many, the increase in cost is the reason they would no longer consider purchasing the mattress, so there are pros and cons to be sure.
In any case, the Avocado mattress certainly has a more generalized contour around the body. This is simply the nature of the natural latex foam.
It compresses around the general shape of your body, but doesn’t as sharply contour your unique curves.
Some sleepers love the feel, others not so much. That said, the Avocado notably only has 2.0” of natural latex foam on top. This is where the bulk of the pressure relief is coming from.
Ultimately, a 2.0” thick comfort layer just isn’t that thick. For lighter-weight sleepers, it may be sufficient, but for many moderate and heavier-weight sleepers, I worry they may find pressure relief lacking.
It is for these reasons that I think we’re seeing a poorer level of pressure relief. Notably, we tested the Avocado Green standard mattress, not the pillowtop.
I would expect the pillowtop would solve many of my pressure relief concerns. If you’re worried at all about pressure relief then I would suggest getting the pillowtop addition (which is $500 extra).
Off-Gassing Test
Off-gassing on the Avocado mattress is excellent. Being an all-natural mattress, the chemical smell is basically non-existent, but that’s not to say there wasn’t any odor out of the box.
Initial Smell Strength
Strong
Off-Gassing Period
1 day
Upon unboxing, there was actually a pretty strong smell. It wasn’t a chemical smell, but rather the smell of the natural latex material, which is quite strong in its own right.
The smell dissipated after the first day so it’s not really a lasting concern. For reference, the average off-gassing period is 7 days.
Company
The Avocado Green mattress comes with a 365-night trial period and a 25-year warranty. Shipping is free and returns are free. It also comes with a 25-year warranty, which is a little longer than what we typically see.
Company Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Data |
---|---|---|---|
Trial Period | 15% | 10 | 365 nights |
Warranty | 10% | 10 | 25 years |
Shipping | 5% | 10 | $0 |
Returns | 20% | 10 | $0 |
Trust | 50% | 8.0 | Good |
Country of Origin | 0% | USA |
Comparing all mattresses tested to date, this trial is 188 nights longer and the warranty is 12 years longer.
There is a 30-night adjustment period for the first month you own the mattress. In this window of time, you cannot initiate a return, and is intended to give your body time to get used to the mattress.
How firm is the Avocado Green?
The Avocado Green mattress has a firmness of 6.5 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm.
Support & Sleeping Positions
The Avocado mattress has excellent support in all sleeping positions. During all of our tests, I felt well-supported no matter where or how I was lying on the mattress.
The mattress has a firmness somewhere between a medium firm and a slightly firm. This feeling creates an abundance of support. The more restrained level of sinkage also ensures that support is kept to a maximum.
Sleeper Weight | Stomach Sleepers | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers |
---|---|---|---|
Under 150 lbs. | Yes | Maybe | Yes |
150-250 lbs. | Yes | Maybe | Yes |
250-300 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
For the vast majority of sleepers, I don’t foresee any support issues. However, for light and moderate-weight side sleepers the firmness, combined with the moderate sinkage depth, may create a little too much pushback.
Design
The Avocado Green mattress is an organic latex mattress made of organic wool, organic natural latex, and organic cotton. It is a traditional hybrid in that it also includes a layer of zoned-support coils.
Type
Hybrid
Thickness
11″
Firmness
6.5
The naturally-derived foams work with the support of the coils for a balanced feel that is responsive and with low motion transfer, while still providing good bounce and contour.
Materials
The Avocado Green is an 11″ latex hybrid mattress. The materials include three basic layers.
- 2.0″ quilted cover
- 8.0″ pocketed coils
- 1.0″ natural latex
There is a 2.0″ quilted cover, an 8.0″ support layer of pocketed coils, and a base of 1.0″ high-density natural latex.
The Cover
The cover of the Avocado mattress is an organic material to provide a textile that is soft, yet breathable.
There are handles on the side for easy carrying and also a little detail at the tufts on top of the mattress.
The Comfort Layer
The comfort layer of the Avocado Green mattress is only 2.0″ thick and made of organic latex. This is a bit thinner than I typically like to see and may be an issue for sleepers looking for increased pressure relief.
The Support Layer
The support layers include an 8.0″ layer of pocketed coils, which are encased in a thin fabric. This fabric helps the coils to move independently of each other and also helps to keep the noise down between coils.
Below the coils is a high-tensity 1.0″ layer of organic latex foam. This layer supports all layers above and helps to provide structure and form to the mattress while adding to the organic composition of the mattress.
Product Evolution
The Avocado Green mattress came out when the brand launched in 2016. As an overall design, the mattress has gone through minimal changes, with the exception of material sources.
Avocado now manufactures the pocketed coils in-house instead of purchasing them from a third party.
Aside from this detail, there are no other changes noted for this mattress.
