The Verdict

Both Saatva and Nectar are well-known brands with a variety of mattress types. Saatva manufactures a wider range including an adjustable mattress, coil, hybrid, latex foam, later hybrid, memory foam, memory foam hybrid, and a plus-sized mattress for heavier-weighted sleepers. Nectar, in comparison, focuses on hybrids, memory foam hybrids, and memory foam mattresses (all foam).

Saatva has a wider firmness range as well, spanning from 4 – 8 (soft to firm), while Nectar has a narrower range, spanning from 5 – 6 (medium to medium-firm). If you’re specifically looking for a soft or firm feel, Saatva will be the better option.

Saatva is definitely the pricier option between these two brands. Saatva prices (considering mattresses we’ve tested) range from $1,699 (Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid) up to $4,599 (Saatva Solaire), with a brand average of $2,784 for a queen mattress. Nectar, on the other hand has a much lower brand average price, only $1,134 for a queen. The most affordable Nectar is $649 (Nectar Classic) and the more expensive Nectar is $1,399 (Nectar Luxe Hybrid). Overall, every Nectar mattress is less than even the cheapest Saatva mattress.

But the lower price also gives Nectar a lower performance in many ways. The average performance score for a Saatva mattress is 9.31 compared to only 8.50 for a Nectar mattress.

All these facts considered, Saatva is going to provide a different feel than a Nectar mattress. Most Saatva mattresses have coil bases with a pillow-top / tufted cover and a luxury feel. Nectar mattresses are either all-foam or hybrids, with a thin cover, and a more modern feel.

Which Mattress Should You Buy?

Before we get into the gritty details, let’s honor some specific mattresses first. First up, we have the best overall mattress from each brand. And beyond that we have more specific mattress winners by category.

Best Mattress Overall

The mattresses earning the title for “best overall” from each brand have the highest overall performance. Overall performance is determined by scores from 8 different categories including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex performance, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company.

Sinkage and bounce are also taken into consideration, but they are not direct scoring factors.

Between Saatva and Nectar, the two top recommendations are Saatva Classic and Nectar Luxe Hybrid.

The Saatva Classic is an 11.5″ coil mattress with two layers of coils, topped with a plush euro-style pillow top. It has a luxuriously soft feel with deep sinkage and extremely high bounce. The Saatva Classic is the #2 best mattress we’ve tested to date and is available in three firmness levels. This high quality and variety of firmnesses make the Saatva an attractive option for a wide range of sleepers.

The Nectar Luxe Hybrid is a 13.5″ memory foam hybrid mattress with memory foam, transitional poly foam, and a pocketed coil foundation. It has a medium feel with very deep sinkage and low bounce. This mattress has a lower overall performance score compared to Saatva, but also a lower price tag (only $1,399 for a queen), about $400 less than Saatva for a queen-sized mattress.

Read Review

Both the Saatva Classic and Nectar Luxe Hybrid are great mattresses to consider, although they have distinctly different feels. The Saatva is available in three firmness levels with deep sinkage and moderate bounce. In comparison, the Nectar is available in only one firmness (5 out of 10) with very deep sinkage and moderate bounce.

Saatva’s Classic is just that…more of a classic, traditional coil mattress feel. Nectar’s mattress utilizes memory foam, which has a more noted body contouring hug.

For more information within each of these categories, please check out the options below:

Both the Saatva Classic and Nectar Luxe Hybrid mattresses would be solid picks for side sleepers. The Saatva Classic has a medium-firm feel (6 out of 10) while the Nectar has a medium feel (5 out of 10). Both mattresses have plush comfort layers and deep sinkage, which help provide contour and hug, especially beneficial when sleeping on your side.

If you’re looking for something a little more high-profile, check out the Saatva RX. It’s pricier than the Classic, but it offers exceptional support and slightly less sinkage.

If you typically sleep on your back or stomach, you’ll want to opt for something with less sinkage. I’d recommend the Saatva Latex Hybrid or Nectar Classic. Both of these mattresses have minimal sinkage and a medium-firm feel. The Saatva (6.5 out of 10) is actually a touch firmer than the Nectar Classic (6 out of 10).

But do note, these mattresses have very different feels. For a memory foam feel and a bit more contour, opt for the Nectar. If you’re looking for a more generalized contour with hyper-fast material responsiveness, go for the Saatva Latex Hybrid.

Heavy people benefit most from mattresses specifically designed for plus-sized bodies. Saatva offers the Saatva HD, which is a great option that supports sleepers up to 500 lbs. per side.

Although Nectar doesn’t have any specific HD models, the Nectar Luxe Hybrid is a high-performing hybrid option to consider. This model is best up to around 300 pounds, if you’re over that limit you should consider a different mattress.

There are multiple mattresses from these two brands that score 10/10 for cooling performance including: Saatva Classic, Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid, Saatva Solaire, or the Nectar Ultra mattress.

All of the Saatva mattresses listed have a coil base, which really gives it the upper hand for cooling.

The Nectar Ultra is the only all-foam mattress listed, with a 4.0″ memory foam layer followed by a 3.0″ poly foam transitional layer. This mattress has a cool-to-the-touch feel for the duration of our cooling test as well as a phase-change material that sits just below the cover.

For sleepers on a tight budget, I’d recommend the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid or the Nectar Premier. Both of these mattresses provide a good value, given their higher performance and relatively lower price tags.

The Saava Memory Foam Hybrid is $1,699, which is over $700 more than the price of the Nectar Premier ($949 for a queen).

If you are definitely looking for something under $1,000, Nectar is the more affordable option, but the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid has a better overall performance.

If you struggle with back pain, the Saatva RX is specifically designed for sleepers with back pain, featuring a 15″ thickness, 5.0″ comfort layer, and an exceptional pressure relief score.

That being said, the Saatva is not cheap—$3,099 for a queen mattress. For a lower price tag, the Nectar Hybrid is a good option to consider. It has a thinner profile, only 12″ thick, and is not going to be able to match the pressure relief you’ll get on the RX, but you will save over $2,000 for a queen mattress.

For a mattress with great sex, the winner is the Saatva Classic. This mattress earned a 9.9/10 score for sex, creating high bounce, great edge support, and good cooling as well. If you’re a heavier person, you should consider the Saatva HD, which is amazing across the board, earning a 10/10 sex score.

The Nectar Hybrid earned a sex score of 8.7 and an overall score of 8.49, representing the best sex score from any Nectar mattress we’ve tested to date. This mattress only has moderate levels of bounce, but it has excellent edge support and great cooling.

The Saatva Classic (soft / plush version), rated a 4 out of 10 firmness, is the best soft mattress in this comparison. Nectar doesn’t have a mattress softer than a 5 out of 10 firmness (medium), as a result, it’s not a good choice if you want a soft feel.

For the best medium-firm mattress, again, the win goes to Saatva Classic, this time in the Luxury Firm firmness. The Nectar Hybrid is the highest-ranking Nectar mattress with a Medium-Firm feel, but the overall score of 8.49 is significantly lower than the overall score of Saatva Classic (9.74).

The Saatva Classic (firm version), rated an 8 out of 10 firmness, is the best firm mattress in this comparison. Unfortunately, Nectar does not have any mattress within their lineup that has a firm feel.

In-Depth Mattress Analyses

After comparing 8 Saatva mattresses, the brand average score is 9.32. After comparing 7 Nectar mattresses, the brand average is 8.56.

Between the two, Nectar has a higher performance and a lower average price. The average price for a Saatva mattress is $2,817, and the average price for a Nectar mattress is $1,134 (for a queen), a 60% savings for sleepers who opt for Nectar.

But, bear in mind, the overall performance is also lower—9.74 for Saatva compared to only 8.76 for Nectar, almost a full point difference.

Firmness

Looking at all available mattresses, Saatva ranges in firmness from 4 to 8 out of 10, and Nectar mattresses range from 5 to 6 out of 10.

If you know you want a medium or medium-firm feel, then Nectar may be perfectly suitable, but if you’re looking for anything that falls outside of this narrow range (ie: a soft or firm feel) then Saatva may be the better option.

Not sure which firmness you need? Your ideal mattress firmness depends on two major factors—sleeping position and body weight. With the right firmness, your body and spine will maintain proper alignment when sleeping

Lightweight sleepers or those who sleep on their side tend to need a softer mattress. By comparison, heavier sleepers or those who sleep on their back or stomach tend to need more support and a firmer feel.

Below, you can watch a video of how the heat dissipates on each mattress during our cooling test. For this test, we lie on the mattress for 15 minutes, get off the mattress, and then take periodic surface-level temperature measurements.

Saatva Classic

Nectar Classic

Saatva Latex Hybrid

Saatva RX

The average cooling score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6 (out of 10).

In reality, all 6 of these featured mattresses have great cooling, 9 to 10 out of 10 cooling score, well above average. They have limited heat retention and are very breathable.

That being said, the only mattress to earn a 10/10 score is the Saatva Classic—this is also the only mattress to have a coil-on-coil design, which certainly aids performance in this category.

Sinkage Test

Thinking about sinkage, both brands have a wide range of sinkage levels including minimal, moderate, and deep sinkage. Regardless of what feel you’re looking for, either Saatva or Nectar could be the right choice.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding sinkage.

The mattress with the least amount of sinkage is the Saatva Latex Hybrid with a sinkage depth of 1.85″.

The mattress with the most amount of sinkage is the Nectar Premier Hybrid with a sinkage depth of 2.54″.

The level of sinkage for each mattress is documented in the images below.

Nectar Premier Hybrid Sinkage Test

Back and stomach sleepers usually prefer less sinkage, which better maintains proper alignment of the spine. The Saatva Latex Hybrid, Saatva RX, Nectar Classic, and Nectar Premier all have less sinkage than average.

Generally, side sleepers need a deeper level of sinkage, as that typically translates to better pressure relief and contour. For deeper sinkage, opt for the Saatva Classic or Nectar Premier Hybrid.

Are you over 300 lbs.? Heavier sleepers generally need a mattress with a firmer feel to maintain optimal support. While we didn’t focus on it in this comparison, the Saatva HD has minimal sinkage and a slightly firm feel, great for heavier bodies.

Motion Transfer Test

On average, Saatva has lower motion transfer than Nectar. Saatva’s average motion transfer score of 9 out of 10 and Nectar’s average score drops down the 8.0 out of 10.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding motion transfer.

Nectar Classic

Saatva Latex Hybrid

Nectar Premier

Saatva RX

Nectar Premier Hybrid

The average motion transfer score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.2 out of 10, which is an average acceleration range of 8.73 m/s².

The Saatva Classic and Saatva Latex Hybrid mattresses both have significantly less motion transfer than average. The plush covers and robust comfort layers really help to deaden motion transfer, making these mattresses great for couples.

Meanwhile, the Saatva RX and all three Nectar mattresses have higher levels of motion transfer than average. While the RX has the same plush quilted cover as the other Saatvas tested, it also has a layer of microcoils near the top of the mattress. This layer is likely the cause for higher levels of motion transfer, combined with the pocketed coil base, as coils tend to allow for more motion than foam layers do.

The Nectar mattresses use a thinner cover, which does not deaden energy as effectively as the Saatva quilted cover.

Response Test

Looking at material responsiveness, Saatva takes the cake here, with a brand average score of 9.5 out of 10. Nectar’s response time is a bit slower, with a brand average of 8.0.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding material response time.

The average response time across all mattresses tested to date is 0.4 seconds to be mostly recovered and 1.0 seconds for full recovery.

The mattresses with the fastest material response time include the Saatva Latex Hybrid and is the only mattress that earned a 10/10 for responsiveness.

But that’s not to say that the other mattresses were necessarily slow. All three Saatva mattresses responded faster than the average as well as the Nectar Premier.

The Nectar Classic and Nectar Premier Hybrid both have slower material responsiveness than average. That said, given the fact that both of those mattresses utilize more memory foam, it makes sense that their responsiveness would be slower.

Bounce Test

Saatva and Nectar are on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to bounce. Saatva mattresses measured levels that were between “high” and “extremely high”. Meanwhile, Nectar mattresses were either “moderate” or “low”.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding bounce.

The average bounce across all mattresses tested to date is 9.23″.

Bounce is neither a good nor a bad thing, generally, but different sleepers will have different preferences in this area. More bounce can mean better sex performance, but can also mean more motion transfer in some cases.

Nectar Premier

Nectar Premier 2024 Bounce Test Rebound

All Saatva mattresses listed here have more bounce than average, with the Saatva Classic having the most bounce of all, 58% more bounce than the average level.

All Nectar mattresses listed here have less bounce than average, with the Nectar Premier having the least bounce of all, 30% less bounce than the average level.

This difference in bounce simply comes down to the types of materials used by each brand. Saatva uses less memory foam and has springier coil units, thereby creating more bounce. Nectar uses more foam, but especially more memory foam, which creates a suppressive effect on bounce.

Edge Support Test

Between Saatva and Nectar, Saatva has the better edge support. The Saatva brand average is 9.73, while the Nectar brand average is 8.36.

The average level of edge support across all mattresses tested to date is 4.02″ when seated at the edge (a score of 8.6).

The Saatva Classic, Saatva Latex Hybrid, Saatva RX, and Nectar Classic all have less sinkage than average when seated at the edge of the mattress. Saatva Classic uses a reinforced perimeter foam, while the Saatva RX and Latex Hybrid use reinforced coils along the edge. These design choices help to create a more robust and supportive edge.

While the Nectar Classic doesn’t use reinforced coils or perimeter foam, it does have a minimal sinkage depth overall, which helps create better support along the edge.

The Nectar Premier and Nectar Premier Hybrid both have more sinkage than average when seated at the edge. The medium feel, combined with the deeper sinkage in general on the mattress, creates the right conditions for a decrease in edge support performance.

Nectar Premier 2024 Edge Support Side Sleeping With Vest 2
Nectar Premier Edge Support Side Sleeping With Vest

Lying support is outstanding on all of these picks as well, excluding the Nectar Premier, which was lacking a bit of support (at least compared to these other mattress models), but certainly not the worst we’ve seen.

Sex Test

Saatva has the better sex performance, with an average score of 9.5. For reference, the average Nectar sex score of 7.56.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding sex performance.

The average sex score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.3.

A higher bounce level and better edge support are the two most important indicators that a mattress will also be good for sex performance. Noise, pressure relief, and cooling are among the other less critical factors.

Nectar Ultra Edge Sitting
Nectar Ultra Edge Sitting

What really kills Nectar mattresses is the low bounce (and the lack of edge support on the Nectar Premier and Nectar Premier Hybrid.) These two factors make up 80% of the sex score so a mattress that can’t deliver in these areas will not be able to compete with a mattress that excels in those same areas.

For the absolute best sex performance, you’ll want to go with the Saatva Classic, which has a high level of bounce, great edge support, and a near-perfect sex score of 9.9 out of 10.

Pressure Relief Test

Saatva has better pressure relief compared to Nectar, but Nectar is still a suitable option. Saatva’s average pressure relief is 9.6, with a comfort layer between 4.0″ and 6.0″.

Nectar has an average pressure relief score of 8.6 and a comfort layer that varies between 4.0″ and 5.5″.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding pressure relief.

Typically speaking, pressure relief has a strong correlation to the thickness of the comfort layer. A thicker comfort layer (especially when paired with a thicker support layer) is one of the most effective ways to see improved pressure relief on a mattress.

This is especially true for side sleepers who may engage more deeply in mattress layers, especially in areas of high pressure like the hips and midsection.

Saatva Rx Materials
Saatva Rx Materials

The Saatva Classic, Saatva RX, and Nectar Premier all have more comfort material than average, but the Saatva mattresses are the only ones that earn a 10/10 for pressure relief.

The Saatva Latex Hybrid, Nectar Classic, and Nectar Premier Hybrid all have less comfort material than average, but they maintain robust support layers, which helps to still provide excellent pressure relief.

Off-Gassing Test

Considering off-gassing, Saatva is the winner compared to Nectar. All three Saatva mattresses earned a score of 10/10, whereas Nectar’s off-gassing score is only 8.43.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding off-gassing.

Off-Gassing TestScoreInitial SmellSmell Duration
Saatva Classic10None0 days
Saatva Latex Hybrid10None0 days
Saatva RX10None0 days
Nectar Classic8.3Strong6 days
Nectar Premier8.9Strong4 days
Nectar Premier Hybrid8.1Strong7 days

The average off-gassing duration across all mattresses tested to date is 6 days.

With that in mind, none of the off-gassing on any of these mattresses is truly terrible.

Saatva mattresses arrive at your door uncompressed, which can give a mattress an advantage and head-start on the off-gassing process. By comparison, Nectar mattresses are compressed, vacuum-rolled, and sealed in a plastic bag for shipment.

Additionally, Saatva mattresses use a larger number of coils, whereas Nectar uses foams, memory foam specifically, which typically has a more significant odor.

Company

Both Saatva and Nectar have really great company scores, with long trials and warranties. But there are two differences.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding company policies.

Among all mattresses tested, the average trial length is 175 nights and the average warranty is 13 years, excluding 39% of mattresses that offer lifetime warranties.

Despite the similarities in trial and warranty, Saatva does have the disadvantage of a $99 return fee if the mattress ends up not working out. That being said, we also consider Saatva to be a more trustworthy brand compared to Nectar.

After testing Saatva models for over a decade, personally reading hundreds of customer feedback and experiences with the brand, as well as my own experiences, I have full confidence in Saatva as a company. They do what they say they will do and stand by their products.

While Nectar doesn’t necessarily do anything to discredit their trust, it is simply not at the same level as Saatva at this time. Nectar was founded in 2017.

In 2023, the brand found itself in the middle of a class action lawsuit, which claimed Nectar participated in “unlawful and deceptive business practices” in relation to their pricing structure and advertised sales. Ultimately, things like this can damage the brand’s trust in the eyes of consumers.
