The Verdict

Comparing Purple and Leesa, both of these brands produce high-quality mattresses that perform well and offer a variety of feels. Purple is a collection of specialty mattresses that all utilize Purple’s patented Purple Grid. On the opposite side of the coin, Leesa has foam mattresses, hybrids, memory foam hybrids, or a plus-sized mattress.

Looking at firmness, Leesa has the wider spread, ranging from Soft (4) to Firm (8). Purple mattresses have a narrower target, only between Medium (5) and Medium-Firm (6).

Leesa also takes the win for price. The average Purple mattress costs $2,127 and the average Leesa is $1,573. Leesa also has better performance overall.

The average performance score for Purple is 8.31, while Leesa is significantly higher at 8.93. Considering Leesa’s lower price and better performance average, Leesa provides a better value for many sleepers over Purple.

That being said, if you’re specifically looking for something with less sinkage and a bit of a floating feel, Purple is a high-quality lineup.

Which Mattress Should You Buy?

The mattresses earning the title for “best overall” from each brand have the highest overall performance. Overall performance is determined by scores from 8 different categories including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex performance, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company.

Sinkage and bounce are also taken into consideration, but they are not direct scoring factors.

Between Purple and Leesa, the two top recommendations are Purple and Leesa Sapira.

This mattress has a medium feel (5 out of 10), and yet some lighter sleepers experience more of a floating feel.

The Leesa Sapira is a 11″ hybrid mattress with poly foam, support foam, and a pocketed coil base. It has a medium-firm feel with moderate sinkage and very high bounce. A queen-sized Sapira is $1599 and performs in the top 1% of all mattresses tested to date. In our tests, the Sapira earned a 10/10 for Cooling, Motion Transfer, and Pressure Relief. Compared to Purple, it has a higher performance level and a price tag that is only $100 more than Purple.

Read Review

Looking at Purple vs. Leesa Sapira, these two mattresses are strong performers. While both have above-average performance scores, the Leesa is technically the better mattress (but also costs an extra $100 for a queen-sized mattress).

They both have moderate sinkage and very high bounce, giving the mattresses similar feels. But I will note, the Purple has a bit more pushback, especially for lighter sleepers.

Purple excels for cooling, low levels of motion transfer, and fast material response. The Leesa Sapira excels in all three areas as well.

The biggest disadvantage for each mattress is edge support, but it is significantly weaker on the Purple than the Sapira.

For side sleepers, our top picks are the Purple Restore Plus and Leesa Legend. Side sleepers benefit from deeper contour and exceptional pressure relief. Both of these mattresses really hit the nail on the head with these two mattresses.

The Purple Restore Plus is a 13″ mattress with a medium feel. The Leesa Legend is slightly thinner (11.5″ thick), but has the same medium firmness. Both mattresses score a 9.0 out of 10 for pressure relief, offering optimal spinal support.

For back or stomach sleepers, our top picks would be the Purple Restore Plus or the Leesa Sapira. The Sapira may be a bit more optimal, given its medium-firm feel.

When sleeping on your back or stomach, sleepers tend to benefit from less sinkage for better spinal alignment. Back or stomach sleepers don’t have the same pressure relief needs as side sleepers.

The Leesa Sapira has a medium-firm feel and moderate sinkage. If you’re most concerned with hitting the right firmness, the Sapira is the better option.

But if you’re most concerned with sinkage levels, you may be more satisfied with the Purple Restore Plus, which has minimal sinkage.

The mattresses both have above-average overall performance, but the Sapira ranks in the top 2% of all mattresses tested to date, quite a bit higher than the Purple Restore Plus.

For heavier sleepers over 250 lbs., our top picks would be the Purple Restore Plus and Leesa Plus Hybrid. Heavier sleepers tend to benefit from more support, thicker comfort layers, and better edge support.

Both of these recommendations are 13″ mattresses, 1″ thicker than average. The Purple has a medium feel (5) and the Leesa has a medium-firm feel (6). They have great pressure relief and sufficient edge support.

The Restore Plus does have less sinkage, if you’re worried about being too enveloped in the mattress. The Leesa Plus has moderate sinkage, so slightly deeper, but nothing too extreme.

If cooling is a top priority for you, our top recommendations would be Purple or Leesa Sapira. Both of these mattresses earned a 10/10 for outstanding cooling performance.

They have a similar price tag (within $100 of each other), but Leesa is the better performer overall. Leesa also has a medium-firm feel (6), whereas the Purple mattress has a medium feel (5).

Purple relies on its patented hyper-elastic open-cell grid for superb breathability. The Leesa Sapira has a phase-change cover that is cool to the touch, a poly foam comfort layer, and a pocketed coil base. All of these design features are contributing factors to excellent cooling performance.

If a tight budget is your main concern, I would recommend the Purple Flex and Leesa Original both of which will keep you right around $1000 for a queen-sized mattress.

The Purple Flex is a thinner, 8.0″ mattress with a 2.0″ Purple Grid, and the lowest-priced Purple mattress we’ve tested to date. That being said, the performance is also lower, ranking in the bottom 11% of all mattresses tested.

The Leesa Original, on the other hand, costs only $60 more, and ranks within the top 20% of all mattresses we’ve tested. The Leesa is 10″ thick and has well-rounded performance across the board.

For sleepers who struggle with back pain, I would recommend the Purple Restore Plus and Leesa Reserve. If you suffer from back pain, finding a mattress that prioritizes spinal alignment and pressure relief is critically important.

These two mattresses have a similar overall performance score and are good options for back pain, thanks to their good support and thicker profiles. The Purple Restore Plus is 13″ thick, with a medium feel (5) and the Leesa Reserve is 14″ thick, with a soft (4), medium (5.5), or slightly firm feel (7).

For sleepers with back pain, I would recommend sticking with the Medium or Slightly Firm Leesa Reserve.

For couples, sex performance may be at the top of your list—if that’s you, I’d steer you toward the Purple Restore Plus and Leesa Original Hybrid. Both of these mattresses excel in bounce, edge support, noise, cooling, and pressure relief, all critically important factors for sex performance.

Both of these mattresses have a sex score that is significantly higher than average.

The Purple Restore Plus has a sex score of 9.9 with very high bounce and great edge support. These two factors alone make up 80% of the sex score.

The Leesa Original Hybrid has a sex score of 9.5 with very high bounce and good edge support, but not as good as the Purple Restore Plus.

The Leesa Sapira Chill is available in a soft version, estimated to be around a 4 out of 10 on the firmness scale. With an overall score of 9.11, this is the best soft mattress in this comparison. Purple doesn’t have a mattress softer than a 5 out of 10 firmness (medium), as a result, it’s not a good choice if you want a soft feel.

If you’re exclusively looking for a mattress with a Medium-Firm feel, I’d opt for the Purple Plus and Leesa Sapira.

While Leesa Sapira secures the higher overall performance, both mattresses have a suitable Medium-Firm feel.

The Purple Plus has moderate sinkage and high bounce. In contrast, the Leesa Sapira has moderate sinkage and very high bounce. Purple is also slightly pricier than the Sapira.

The Leesa Sapira Chill is available in a firm version as well, estimated to be around an 8 out of 10 on the firmness scale. With an overall score of 9.11, this is the best soft mattress in this comparison. Purple doesn’t have a mattress firmer than a 6.5 out of 10 firmness (medium-firm), as a result, it’s not a good choice if you want a firm feel.

In-Depth Mattress Analyses

After comparing 7 Purple mattresses, the brand average score is 8.31. After comparing 12 Leesa mattresses, the brand average is 8.93.

Factoring the average performance score across all 320+ mattresses tested to date (8.55), Purple has a below-average performance, and Leesa has an above-average performance.

Leesa also holds the price advantage as well, with an average price tag of $1,573 (for a queen), whereas Purple’s average price is $2,127. Opting for Leesa can save an average of $555.

But these are very different mattresses, especially in their feel. Leesa has options that rely on traditional foam, which offers deeper sinkage and a more dramatic hug around your body. On the other hand, Purple’s design uses its special grid material that offers less sinkage but higher ease of movement (more bounce and faster response).

Looking at all available mattresses we’ve tested, Purple ranges in firmness from 5 to 6.5 out of 10, and Leesa mattresses range from 4 to 8 out of 10.

Therefore, Purple will not be your best bet if you’re looking for something especially soft or firm. Meanwhile, Leesa can offer both.

Some models from Leesa, like the Oasis Chill, Reserve, and Sapira Chill, offer multiple firmness options. Note, our testing data was performed on the medium-firm (5.5 or 6) versions of these mattresses.

Cooling Test

Both Purple and Leesa mattresses have equally impressive cooling performance. Each brand manages an average cooling 9.3, where the average score is 8.6.

Both Purple and Leesa have mattresses with a perfect 10 out of 10 cooling score as well. The Purple mattress and the Leesa Sapira are among the best for each brand when it comes to cooling.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding cooling.

But none of these popular models from Purple or Leesa performed poorly. Purple’s hyper-elastic grid is highly breathable and thin, which makes for a potent combination for dissipating heat.

Because of its density, memory foam tends to be at a disadvantage when it comes to cooling. However, the quality and design of Leesa’s foam layers manage to overcome that challenge and offer top-tier performance.

Both Purple and Leesa know what they’re doing when it comes to creating a mattress with excellent cooling.

Sinkage Test

In terms of sinkage, both Purple and Nectar mattresses tend to stay around the minimal to moderate levels.

The mattress with the least amount of sinkage goes to the Purple Restore Premier at 1.82″, but the Leesa Legend was close at 1.88″. Both of these create a more floating-on-top feel for sleepers.

The deepest sinkage among these 6 is the Purple mattress at 2.24″. While technically still moderate, it is on the edge of being considered “deep.”

The average sinkage depth across all mattresses tested is 2.18″.

Back and stomach sleepers usually prefer less sinkage, which better maintains proper alignment of their spine. For these sleepers, Leesa has better value options with the Leesa Legend (1.88″ at $2,079), Leesa Original (2.09″ at $1,059), and Leesa Sapira (2.05″ at $1,599), all with minimal to moderate sinkage and less than $2,100.

If your budget can stretch a bit further, the Purple Restore Plus and Purple Restore Premier are also good options for back and stomach sleepers.

Leesa Legend sinkage
Leesa Legend contour demonstration

Generally, side sleepers enjoy a deeper level of sinkage, as that typically translates to better pressure relief and contour. For deeper sinkage, opt for the Purple with 2.24″ of sinkage for only $1,499.

Are you over 300 lbs.? Heavier sleepers generally need a mattress with a firmer feel than what Purple can provide. However, the Leesa Sapira Chill may be a suitable choice. For more options, check out of full list of recommendations in our Best Mattress for Heavy People guide.

Motion Transfer Test

When we compare motion transfer for Purple and Leesa, there’s a clear winner: Leesa.

While the Purple mattress has one of the lowest acceleration ranges we’ve seen to date (2.23 m/s²), as a whole, Purple averages an 8.0 motion transfer score.

Leesa, on the other hand, has the Leesa Original with an even lower acceleration range (2.03 m/s²) as well as a much more impressive brand average of 10 out of 10.

For reference, the average motion transfer score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.2. Despite the exceptional performance of the Purple mattress, the brand’s 8.0 average falls below this benchmark.

The higher bounce and ultra-responsiveness of the Purple grid are most likely working against it here. The memory and poly foam material that Leesa uses does a better job of dissipating motion from one side of the mattress to the other.

Even Leesa’s hybrid models, the Leesa Legend and Leesa Sapira, manage to keep motion well within low levels, and they come out as the better option regarding motion transfer.

Response Test

Next, let’s hit response time—this is the measure of how quickly a mattress can rebound back to its original shape. Both brands perform exceptionally well, but Purple is the clear winner, no matter how you slice it.

Purple earned 10/10 scores for every model in this comparison, with mostly recovered measurements of 0.2 and fully recovered measurements of 0.3 seconds. These times are the fastest we can measure. This amounts to a perfect 10 brand score, compared to Leesa’s 9.6 brand score.

Leesa’s models still performed well, with no mattresses measuring a mostly recovered time above 0.3 seconds and no fully recovered time above 0.5 seconds.

So Leesa’s performance is still considerably faster than average.

Both Leesa and Purple are more than fast enough to reform back to shape, so there is little to no worry of any cratering sensation that may hinder movement on the mattress.

Bounce Test

Speaking of ease of movement, we are going to compare bounce levels between Purple and Leesa. Bounce is the factor most impactful for the general ease of movement in, out, and on your mattress.

In regards to bounce, Purple and Leesa are fairly similar. As you might expect by now, Purple’s hyper-elastic grid material is great for bounce. As a brand, they have an average bounce measurement of 11.48″.

Purple Renew Gel Grid
Purple Gel Grid

But Leesa still performs well with a brand average bounce measurement of 10.72″. The models with the most bounce are the Purple mattress with 12.79″ and the Leesa Sapira with 12.67″.

The mattresses with the lowest bounce are the Purple Restore Premier and the Leesa Original.

The average bounce across all mattresses tested to date is 9.16″.

Considering the needs of multiple types of sleepers, I’d say the ideal range for bounce is between 8-12″. Less than 8″, and your movements start to feel impeded by the mattress. On the other end, more than 12″, and the mattress can start to feel too much like a trampoline.

Mattresses with more bounce are better for ease of movement and increase sex performance. However, higher bounce also typically creates a higher level of motion transfer. So there are pros and cons when it comes to bounce.

Leesa Legend bottom support foam layer
Leesa Legend bottom support foam layer

Typically, mattresses with support coils in the base have an advantage over those with support foam. This holds true with the model with the lowest bounce (the Leesa Original) being an all-foam construction, and the majority of those with coils are clearing the 8″ benchmark by a wide margin.

The only exception is with the Purple mattress, which does not have coils.

In the end, bounce is a preferential factor, and both Purple and Leesa have models that offer more than enough bounce for the average sleeper.

Edge Support Test

When it comes to edge support, neither Purple nor Leesa are particularly strong performers.

Purple has an edge support brand average score of 8.3 and Leesa has a score of 7.8. On top of the higher score, Purple has the larger disparity between models.

Where Leesa has a sitting sinkage range of 3.25″ to 6.25″, Purple’s models have a sitting sinkage as low as 2.75″ and as high as 7.75″.

The average edge support score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6. This is generated with an average sitting edge compression of 4.00″.

By this number, both brands fall below average. On the other hand, Purple has the Purple Restore Plus with the highest score of 10 and the Purple Restore Premier with the second highest score of 9.9.

Purple Restore Plus Edge Support Side Sleeping With Vest

Purple is clearly the better brand when it comes to edge support. It’s simply the Purple mattress with the bad outlier score of 5.1, which brings down the average.

The Leesa Legend, Leesa Original, and Leesa Sapira all fall short when it comes to sitting edge compression, but they all performed excellently when it came to lying support. So if sleeping near the edge is your main concern, you may not want to rule out Leesa in this category.

Leesa Hybrid side sleeping with vest

However, if you like to sit at the edge of your bed or incorporate it into your dance without pants, Purple is generally your better option.

Sex Test

Now let’s move on to sex performance. Our sex score is derived from a weighted formula that factors the performance categories that may impact the act of sex on a mattress. These include: bounce, edge support, noise, pressure relief, and cooling.

Purple is the clear winner here with an average sex score of 9.2. Leesa, on average, is no slouch with a sex score of 8.6.

The average sex score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.5, so both brands are above average.

The two weightiest factors in the formula are bounce and edge support. If you can recall, the two brands are similar in bounce, but Purple pulled ahead in edge support. Mattresses that excelled in both, like the Purple Restore Plus, earned the highest sex score.

The Leesa Sapira had high bounce, but only good edge support, so we see a little lower performance at 9.1.

Mattresses with low bounce and poor edge support performed the worst, like the Leesa Original or the Purple Restore Premier.

Pressure Relief Test

When it comes to pressure relief, the Purple and Leesa are pretty evenly matched. No mattress performs poorly here. Of the 6 mattresses tested here, 5 earned a 9 out of 10 for pressure relief.

Purple plays around with their ratio of comfort material and support material, but they always have their tried and true hyper-elastic grid at the end of the day. Though it seems to hit a plateau with every model earning just a 9.0 score.

Leesa, on the other hand, has a similar trend of trying different ratios of comfort and support material, especially for their more value models. However, they did manage a 9.3 average, overtaking Purple.

Purple Restore Plus Measuring Materials
Purple Restore Plus Material Thickness

The average pressure relief score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.8 out of 10, with a 4.1″ comfort layer.

Typically, mattresses with thicker comfort layers perform higher in pressure relief. But even lower quantity can be made up with quality, which is what we see with the Purple Restore Premier.

Leesa Hybrid support form layer

In the case of the Leesa Original, we see a thinner overall profile, yet the comfort layer makes up 40% of its thickness. There’s a similar story with the Purple mattress, but its comfort layer makes up 58% with an even thinner support layer.

It’s where quantity, quality, and smart design all come together, where we see the best results, and that is seen on the Leesa Sapira. Despite a slightly thinner comfort layer than average, the Sapira has the best blend of these 6 to create 10/10 pressure relief.

Off-Gassing Test

When it comes to off-gassing, Purple generally had a longer duration to complete off-gassing than Leesa. Leesa averaged a duration of 4.3 days across the models seen in this analysis.

Meanwhile, Purple saw an average of 13.3 days to have their mattresses fully off-gas. They also had the biggest spread of measurements among their models with 4 days as their shortest and 26 days as their longest.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding off-gassing.

Leesa Original9.2Strong3 days
Leesa Sapira8.3Strong6 days

For reference, the average off-gassing duration is 6.5 across all the mattresses we’ve tested to date.

The Purple Restore Premier is the clear outlier for having the highest duration of 26 days. It gave the mattress a 2.8 score in this category, where the average score is 8.2.

The Leesa Original only has a 10″ profile, which does give an advantage where there is less material to off-gas, so we saw the fastest duration of 3 days. The Purple mattress was similar with its 9.5″ thickness, but its special grid system was a bit more potent than a standard visco-elastic foam, so we measured a 4 day duration.

The Leesa Sapira was right about average, if not just a little shorter, at 6 days even.
