Our Verdict

Both Loom & Leaf and Tempurpedic are high-quality mattresses with a classic memory foam feel. They are made from memory foam and designed for deep compression, pressure relief, hug, and contouring. Especially for side sleepers, these factors are all critically important.

While Tempurpedic has a wider brand offering (5 unique collections with varying degrees of firmness), the Loom & Leaf is a single mattress that comes in two firmness levels.

Loom & Leaf has significantly better cooling and more edge support. These two factors alone make the Loom & Leaf the better option overall.

In-Depth Mattress Analyses

This guide highlights the most important factors in determining if Loom & Leaf or Tempurpedic offers the right mattress for you.

In This Comparison
Compare the Models | Performance Tests | Design | Materials | Summary

30-Second Summary

  • Performance: The Loom & Leaf mattress has better performance than the Tempurpedic. Compared to the average mattress, Loom & Leaf performs above average and Tempurpedic performs below average.
  • Price: Loom & Leaf offers a significant price savings compared to Tempurpedic—$2491 of savings, although both brands are more expensive than the average memory foam mattress ($1,137 for a queen).
  • Cooling: Loom & Leaf has better cooling than Tempurpedic and has better heat dissipation overall.
  • Sinkage: Loom & Leaf has extremely deep sinkage and Tempurpedic has very minimal sinkage. Although they are both memory foam, this is a dramatically different feel.
  • Motion Transfer: Both of these mattresses have low levels of motion transfer.
  • Response: Both mattresses have a similar response time, slower than average but not a-typical for these types of memory foam.
  • Bounce: Both Loom & Leaf as well as Tempurpedic have very low levels of bounce.
  • Edge Support: While both mattresses struggle with sitting edge support, the Loom & Leaf does redeem itself a bit with excellent lying support. Lying edge support on the Tempurperic is mediocre.
  • Sex: Neither Loom & Leaf nor Tempurpedic are really great for sex. They both have very low bounce and struggling edge support. If sex performance is critical, I’d recommend checking out a memory foam hybrid with higher bounce.
  • Pressure Relief: Both Loom & Leaf and Tempurpedic have outstanding pressure relief (10 out of 10) with thick comfort layers and high-quality materials.
  • Off-Gassing: Loom & Leaf has faster off-gassing than Tempurpedic.
  • Company: Loom & Leaf has a longer trial period, longer warranty, and higher company trust score as well.
  • Firmness: Tempurpedic has a wider range of firmnesses than Loom & Leaf if we’re looking at the whole collection.
  • Design: Both Loom & Leaf and Tempurpedic are luxury memory foam mattresses.

Cooling Test

When it comes to cooling, the Loom & Leaf has better performance. Each mattress basically had the same starting temperature.

After lying on each mattress for 15 minutes, the Tempurpedic got hotter than the Loom & Leaf and also had a harder time dissipating the heat.

After five minutes without anyone laying on the mattress, the Loom & Leaf had decreased by over 10° while the Tempurpedic only decreased by ~6° from the max temp.

Sinkage Test

The Loom & Leaf mattress had extremely deep sinkage and the Tempurpedic very minimal. In this test, these mattresses couldn’t be more different.

If you are looking for more contour and sinkage (especially good for side sleepers), the Loom & Leaf is likely the better choice.

If you’re worried about too much sinkage or feeling stuck, the Tempurpedic may be the better pick.

Motion Transfer Test

Although the acceleration range between the Loom & Leaf and Tempurpedic is similar, the way that each mattress experiences motion transfer is quite different.

Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze9.95.17 m/s²

Loom & Leaf

Loom & Leaf (2022) motion transfer chart

Tempurpedic

Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze Motion Transfer Chart

The Loom & Leaf has a max acceleration value almost twice that of the Tempurpedic. That is the amount of energy that is translated upwards upon the initial ball drop.

But the Tempurpedic has a minimum acceleration value that’s double Loom & Leaf when it comes to sinking into the mattress and translating energy that way.

The result ends up being Tempurpedic having slightly higher levels of motion transfer, but it’s also important to look at the time span.

Tempurpedic is able to absorb the motion and dissipate it by 0.25 seconds, whereas the Loom & Leaf mattress takes about 3 times as long—0.75 seconds to dissipate the same amount of energy.

While the duration of measurable motion is longer on the Loom & Leaf, the total level of motion is still small. Both Loom & Leaf and Tempurpedic are among the best mattresses we’ve tested with respect to motion transfer.

Both keep motion to a minimum, which makes them great mattresses for couples.

Response Test

When comparing the response time, the Tempurpedic is faster. It takes only 0.8 seconds for the mattress to (mostly) recover after removing the medicine ball.

For comparison, it takes the Loom & Leaf almost twice as long at 1.5 seconds.

To completely recover, it takes 1.2 seconds on the Tempurpedic and 1.6 seconds on Loom & Leaf.

Loom & Leaf7.10.6 seconds1.6 seconds

Loom & Leaf

Tempurpedic

Typically to get a faster response time you need to give up the hug, contour, and deep compression of memory foam. However, Tempurpedic’s proprietary memory foam manages to keep the classic memory foam feel intact, while still preserving fast material response.

Bounce Test

Bounce levels are basically the same on these two mattresses and they are quite low. Upon initial drop, the ball sinks in between 3-4″ and when it bounces upward it doesn’t bounce high enough to even clear the top of the mattress.

This is a true calling card of memory foam. It hugs and provides pressure relief while also absorbing motion and energy.

Edge Support Test

When it comes to edge support, neither mattress really excelled. Both mattresses have between 6-6.25″ of sinkage, when seated at the edge. For reference, the average sitting sinkage level of 4.06″, about 1/3 less sinkage than both of these mattresses.

But Loom & Leaf does have an advantage for excellent lying support. When lying on the Tempurpedic, I felt a notable lack of support and the feeling that I could be rolled out of bed.

Sex Test

The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling. These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score.

Sex TestSex ScoreBounceEdge SupportNoisePressure ReliefCooling
Loom & Leaf6.15.45.910109.0
Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze6.35.66.310108.0

When considering these 5 factors, the winner between these two mattresses is Tempurpedic (although neither score is as high as what we’ve seen from other options).

While both of these mattresses have that classic memory foam feel, the Loom & Leaf offers better edge support and cooling. Tempurpedic offers a little more bounce which ultimately gives them the win here and is the better option for sex.

Pressure Relief Test

When it comes to pressure relief one of the most important factors we look at is the comfort layer. The comfort layer is the material that provides contouring and deep compression. This is an important part of support and prevents pressure points from forming.

Pressure Relief TestScoreComfort LayerSupport Layer
Loom & Leaf104.5″7.5″
Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze104.0″7.5″

While both Loom & Leaf and Tempurpedic have great comfort layers, the Loom & Leaf is 0.5″ thicker and makes up 38% of the total mattress thickness.

Because of this, Loom & Leaf is going to take another win in this category.

Off-Gassing Test

Loom and Leaf had zero initial smell upon arrival. Any off-gassing it may have had was fully complete before it arrived at my home. As a result, there was no initial smell and no off-gassing time is required.

Tempurpedic had a moderate smell upon the initial unboxing. While the smell does linger a bit, within 3 days it was gone. This is still faster than the 6-day average (among all mattresses tested to date).

Company

Both Loom & Leaf and the Tempurpedic mattress come from reputable companies with long-standing records of excellence. Tempurpedic has been around for longer, but Loom & Leaf still has a solid history since its establishment in 2011.

Looking specifically at terms, Loom & Leaf offers a longer trial period as well as a longer warranty.

Shipping is going to be longer on Tempurpedic in most cases.

Both Tempurpedic and Loom & Leaf have a fee in the event you need to return the mattress. Loom & Leaf is $99 to make a return. The Tempurpedic fee is $175 bot may be more for some specialty mattresses.

Firmness

The Loom & Leaf comes in two different firmness levels (Relaxed Firm, 5.5 out of 10, and Firm, 8 out of 10). The Tempurpedic mattress we tested is the Cloud Breeze, a 2016 model that is no longer sold. However, while this exact model isn’t sold, Tempurpedic’s current Breeze line seems to be the replacement.

The current Tempurpedic Breeze is available in soft (4), medium (5), medium hybrid (4.5), and firm (7). As a result, there is a firmness available for essentially everyone.

Design

Both Loom & Leaf and Tempurpedic are luxury memory foam mattresses. They use 100% foam to provide support and comfort across the surface and core of the mattress.

DesignTypeMattress Thickness
Loom & LeafMemory Foam12.0″

The Loom and Leaf mattress uses memory foam and a gel layer that provides a reasonable level of cooling with the contouring hug of memory foam. It uses a high-density support foam as a foundation.

The Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze mattress is also memory foam and the foam layers are aerated to help enhance cooling and for a faster response time.

Should You Buy the Loom & Leaf?

I would recommend the Loom & Leaf if you’re looking for:

  • Classic memory foam feel: If you’re looking for the contouring, hug, and slower response time of traditional memory foam, the Loom & Leaf is a great option.
  • Good cooling: Aside from being a bit more traditional, this mattress integrates a cooling gel layer for added comfort. During our cooling performance tests, this extra layer really made a big difference.
  • Better Value: The Loom & Leaf has higher performance and a lower price point. This is a great option for sleepers who want an excellent value.

The Loom & Leaf is a good option if you want that classic memory foam feel but with better cooling and edge support. It has a slower response time, low bounce, and high hug and contouring.

Click here to learn more or to check the price on the Loom & Leaf.

Should You Buy the Tempurpedic?

I would recommend the Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze if you’re looking for:

  • In-store options: If it’s critically important that you see the mattress in-store, Tempurpedic is a good option since they offer brick-and-mortar locations. But be prepared to pay a higher price point for the convenience.
  • Low bounce, but faster response: This mattress is a solid mix of elements of classic memory foam (ex: low bounce and contouring) and modern elements (ex: faster response time and aerated foams).
  • Other styles: Tempurpedic has a huge selection of mattresses aside from the Breeze. If you like the Tempurpedic name, but end up not loving the Breeze, it’s pretty likely that there will be another mattress that has a better feel or firmness for your needs.

The Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze is classic memory foam but with faster response times. It struggles a bit with heat retention and poor edge support, but if you truly love a traditional Tempurpedic mattress, the Cloud Breeze could be a good option.

FAQ

Does Loom & Leaf come in a box?

Yes, the Loom & Leaf mattress comes in a box, but it is shipped uncompressed. By comparison, the Leesa is shipped vacuum rolled and compressed.

Can you flip a Loom & Leaf mattress?

No. The Loom & Leaf is not designed to be flipped over.

What are the cons of a Tempur-Pedic mattress?

For most sleepers, the biggest con for Tempurpedic is the price, since it tends to be significantly above the average mattress compared to similar online mattresses. Being largely memory foam in most cases, cooling or sinkage / hug may also be an issue for some sleepers.
