Best For

  • Lower levels of motion transfer
  • Thicker profile, 16.5″ thick with a 4.5″ thick comfort layer
  • Value price, under $700 for a queen mattress

Considerations

  • Very slow response time
  • Worse sex score than average
  • Slower off-gassing, takes 13 days compared to an 8-day average

Our Verdict

The SweetNight Coolnest Hybrid is a 16.50″ (designed to be 16″, but ours measured 16.5″) memory foam hybrid mattress made of memory foam, poly foam, and pocketed coils.

The SweetNight Coolnest Hybrid is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm. This is a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale.

This mattress has deep sinkage and low levels of bounce. It has a more dramatic contour, which is to be expected as a memory foam hybrid. If you like your mattress to hug you, this could be advantageous, but you’ll need to be prepared to give up some things in terms of overall performance.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 7.97, ranking the mattress in the bottom 19% of all mattresses tested to date. Looking exclusively at memory foam hybrids, that rank drops even lower to the bottom 4% of all mattresses tested.

The SweetNight Coolnest Hybrid is $699 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 63% less expensive than the average memory foam hybrid. Savings are plenty, but there are also multiple categories where the Coolnest performs worse than average.

How is SweetNight Coolnest Hybrid Different?

The SweetNight Coolnest Hybrid is a 16.50″ memory foam hybrid mattress with an overall performance level that is below average, but paired with a price that is also below average.

If you’re on a tight budget, this mattress could be an attractive pick, but be prepared to give up a few areas of performance to hit this price point.

Advantages

Aside from the low price, the only other big advantage of the Coolnest Hybrid is better motion isolation compared to the average mattress.

Neutral Factors

This mattress has deep sinkage and low levels of bounce. Both of these are considered neutral factors since different sleepers will have different preferences in these areas.

Sweetnight Coolnest Hybrid Relaxing

Disadvantages

Disadvantages of the SweetNight Coolnest Hybrid includes worse cooling, slower material response time, and fair support when lying at the edge of the mattress.

Pressure relief was also below average, despite the thick height and thick comfort layer.

8.0

Cooling Test

The SweetNight Coolnest Hybrid has good cooling. During our tests, I felt a slight level of heat retention, but it was nothing extreme or anything I’d characterize as “hot”.

Baseline Temp.

77.8° F

Max. Temp.

91.5° F

Ending Temp.

82.0° F

This mattress utilizes a hybrid design, which helps bring more airflow and breathability into the mattress. However, it’s also equipped with a 4.50” thick comfort layer, memory foam, and a pillow top.

Max. Temp.

Ending Temp.

Sweetnight Coolnest Hybrid After Cooling Test
SweetNight Coolnest Hybrid After Cooling Test
  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

All of those extra foam layers are absorbing more heat. While some of those foams breathe reasonably well and prevent heat build-up, especially the unusually airy poly foam beneath the memory foam, in totality, they seem to retain a little more heat than is ideal.

In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 91.5° F. This is 1.3° warmer than the average of 90.2° F, based on all of our tests to date.

After getting off the mattress, the temperature declined by 5.1 degrees from minutes 0 to 1, which is 0.3 degrees warmer than the average 0 to 1 minute decline of 4.8 degrees.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Sweetnight Coolnest Hybrid Heat Dissipation Chart

When we consider the combination of objective data, my subjective experiences, and an analysis of the materials, I’m confident in my view that cooling is good.

Sinkage Test

The SweetNight Coolnest Hybrid has deep sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 2.32″. This is 0.07″ more sinkage than the average sinkage depth of 2.25″, based on all of our tests to date. The mattress creates a dramatic body contouring hug.

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Sweetnight Coolnest Hybrid Sinkage Test
SweetNight Coolnest Hybrid Sinkage Test

The Coolnest Hybrid uses a thick 4.50” comfort layer composed of pillow top, memory foam, and poly foam. While we have a mix of different foam types, the memory foam is the feeling that really shines through.

The mattress creates a significant and exacting hug around the precise shape of the body. To be fair, it’s not as extreme as some more traditional memory foam mattresses we’ve tested.

The other poly foams and coil layer help to balance it out slightly. Even so, it still has a dramatic and notable memory foam feel with lots of body contouring hug

8.7

Motion Transfer Test

The SweetNight Coolnest Hybrid has a low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 7.99 m/s². This is 9% less motion transfer than the average of 8.79 m/s².

Accel. Range

7.99 m/s²

Motion Duration

1.20 seconds

This mattress benefits from the thick comfort layer, especially the more traditional memory foam layer just beneath the core. This layer is more viscoelastic and also greatly absorbs and disperses energy.

The attributes of the memory foam layer, combined with the total 4.50” comfort layer and below-average level of bounce, set the stage for better motion transfer.

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.2 seconds.

Motion declines significantly immediately thereafter and then more gradually over the next second. By 1.20 seconds, we’ve returned to near-zero levels of energy, which is 0.30 seconds longer than the average motion duration of 0.90 seconds.

Motion Transfer Over Time

Sweetnight Coolnest Hybrid Motion Transfer Chart

While motion duration was worse than average, motion intensity was better than average. While this level of motion is far from perfect, it’s still low enough to be a non-issue for most sleepers.

6.3

Response Test

The SweetNight Coolnest Hybrid has a slow mostly recovered response time and a very slow fully recovered response time.

Mostly Recovered

0.7 sec.

Fully Recovered

2.0 sec.

In our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.7 seconds, which is 0.28 seconds slower than the average of 0.42 seconds, based on all of our tests to date.

In our fully recovered responsiveness test, we measured a recovery speed of 2.0 seconds, which is 0.98 seconds slower than the average of 1.02 seconds.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

While the poly foam and coil layers within the mattress spring back to shape quickly, the memory foam layer and pillow top layer take longer to recover back to their original shapes after being compressed.

That slower material recovery speed makes the mattress harder to move around on, harder to change positions, and harder to get in and out of bed. It also has a negative effect on sex performance.

The ease of movement issues aren’t exclusively a problem with SweetNight, but rather a challenge for many memory foam and memory foam hybrid mattresses.

All that to say, if you want the memory foam feel, you should be prepared for a slower material recovery speed and worse ease of movement.

Bounce Test

The SweetNight Coolnest Hybrid has a low level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 6.54″. This is 2.16″ less bounce than the average of 8.70″, based on all of our tests to date.

Max. Depth

4.98″

Max. Rebound

1.56″

Total Bounce

6.54″

The lower level of bounce is resulting from a combination of the memory foam layer, pillow top, and thick 4.50” comfort layer.

These material attributes absorb and disperse energy, which means there is less that can be returned as bounce. The memory foam layer, in particular, has the largest impact on lowering bounce.

Max. Sinkage Depth

Max. Bounce Height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

That lower bounce is a major reason why motion transfer was kept to a more reasonable level. However, lower bounce also makes ease of movement and sex performance worse. As such, there are pros and cons to consider with bounce.

8.5

Edge Support Test

The SweetNight Coolnest Hybrid has outstanding sitting edge support and fair lying edge support.

Max. Sinkage

3.00″

Lying Support

Fair

Reinforced Edge

Yes

In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 3.00″. This is 0.85″ less sitting sinkage than the average of 3.85″, based on all of our tests to date.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

While lying directly on the edge of the mattress, I felt that the support was fair in all sleeping positions. The problem with lying edge support comes down to the memory foam within the comfort layer.

Memory foam creates a dramatic and exacting body hug. While in the middle of the mattress it creates a wonderful feel and great pressure relief.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

However, that memory foam hug along the edge creates a weakening of edge support, as there isn’t enough material on the side of the body nearest the edge (while lying close to the edge).

In addition, lying edge support is further negatively compounded by a downward curvature of the cover at the edge. Together, the memory foam and cover’s downward curvature simply create a lying edge support feel that is far from great.

Sweetnight Coolnest Hybrid Materials With Edge Foam
SweetNight Coolnest Hybrid Materials With Edge Foam

On the positive side, this mattress is equipped with a full perimeter of reinforced edge support foam. That foam is 3.75” wide and 10” tall. That foam is certainly helping to improve support at the edge and appears to make a big difference for sitting edge support.

Even so, it’s not enough to overcome the challenges posed by this material design when it comes to lying edge support.

7.6

Sex Test

The SweetNight Coolnest Hybrid has fair sex performance. On the positive side, noise is minimal, pressure relief is excellent, and sitting edge support is outstanding.

In our sitting edge test we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 3.00”. This robust sitting support helps extend the usable surface area of the mattress for amorous activities.

Sweetnight Coolnest Hybrid Edge Sitting
SweetNight Coolnest Hybrid Edge Sitting

Next up, with a middling performance level, we have cooling, which earned a good, but not great score. Even so, it should be good enough for most couples. Last but not least, we have the weakest performance factor, which is bounce.

In our bounce tests, we measured a total bounce height of 6.54”. This is less than average. When it comes to sex, we want to see as much bounce as possible.

This more restrained level of bounce, which is useful for lowering motion transfer, does no favors for sex performance.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce65%6.6Low
Edge Support20%10Outstanding
Noise5%10Minimal
Pressure Relief5%8.0Good
Cooling5%8.0Good

As a result of the lower bounce level, the total sex performance is well below average. The more limited sex performance is pretty typical for a memory foam hybrid.

8.0

Pressure Relief Test

The SweetNight Coolnest Hybrid has a good level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt no significant pressure points on my body. The mattress is equipped with 4.5″ of comfort material, which is 0.17″ more comfort material than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.33″, based on all of our tests to date.

Comfort Layer

4.50″

Support Layer

This mattress uses reasonably good quality poly foams (at least relative to the price point, you can see the foam densities here) and has a thicker-than-average comfort layer.

Sweetnight Coolnest Hybrid Pressing Foams

That said, I’m less than pleased that it uses a 1.84 PCF memory foam layer. That’s well below that ideal foam density we want to see, and I’m concerned that layer in particular is simply not going to perform well over time (IE, more prone to sagging).

Moving on, certainly the thick combination of pillow top, memory foam, and poly foam are all contributing to the overall comfort and pressure relief.

Sweetnight Coolnest Hybrid Back Sleeping
SweetNight Coolnest Hybrid Back Sleeping

The memory foam in particular is creating a more dramatic and exacting hug around the body. To really enjoy the comfort dynamic of this mattress, you’ll need to prefer the feel of memory foam with its more noted contour and hug around the body.

In our objective pressure mapping tests, we measured a max PSI of 0.33. This is well within the 1.0 PSI threshold that I ideally want all mattresses to be within.

When I consider our objective pressure mapping tests, material thickness, material quality, and my subjective experience on the mattress, I’m confident most sleepers will find the pressure relief to be excellent.

How firm is SweetNight Coolnest Hybrid?

The Sweetnight Coolnest Hybrid is only available in a single firmness option— medium-firm. However, it is also available in three different height options – 12”, 14”, and 16”, with more foam material being used in those thicker versions.

For this reason, despite the singular firmness option, feel and firmness are likely to vary somewhat across these versions.

Firmness Chart

We tested the thickest option (16”) and confirmed that it had a medium-firm feel, which we rate as a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, where 10 is the firmest.

Support & Sleeping Positions

Support on the SweetNight Coolnest Hybrid is good. During our tests, I felt reasonably well supported in all sleeping positions.

That said, it’s also clear that support doesn’t rise to the excellent or outstanding level. Even so, given the price point that is to be expected.

Support FactorData
Comfort Layer 4.50″
Support Layer 12.00″
Firmness Medium-Firm
Body Contour Dramatic
Zoned Support Yes
Reinforced Edge Yes

The mattress is equipped with a 12.0″ support layer. This is 4.04″ thicker than the average support layer thickness of 7.96″, based on all of our tests to date.

In all mattress tests, we cut the mattress open to assess material quality. In doing so, I’m generally pleased with what we saw and measured. The foams look and feel fine on both the body and in-hand.

Sweetnight Coolnest Hybrid Pillow Top
SweetNight Coolnest Hybrid Pillow Top

Certainly, they aren’t the absolute best or highest quality foams we’ve tested (as confirmed with our densimeter tests). That said, with respect to the price point, they feel like a fair and reasonable quality level.

The one exception is the memory foam layer, which has a density of just 1.84 PCF. That’s well below the ideal density level we want to see for memory foam. The lower density makes me concerned that the layer is not likely to hold up well over time and could result in earlier sagging and body impressions.

Moving on, this mattress has a medium-firm feel, which works well for most sleepers and all sleeping positions. In addition, this mattress utilizes zoned support. Zoned support creates extra support and firmness where most people carry more of their weight.

Check out the table below to see the sleeper weights and sleeping positions that would be best suited for this mattress.

In the case of the Coolnest Hybrid, there is a reinforced poly foam layer just above the coil unit in the center one-third of the mattress. This layer helps to improve support on the mattress and reduce sagging in the center third.

Sweetnight Coolnest Hybrid Side Sleeping
SweetNight Coolnest Hybrid Side Sleeping

Lastly, the mattress is equipped with a 14-gauge coil unit. This is on the thicker side and thicker than I would have guessed for this mattress. The thicker wire is helping to improve the total support dynamic.

Based on all of my tests to date, an analysis of the materials, and my subjective experiences, I’m confident that most sleepers will find that the support on the SweetNight Coolnest Hybrid is good.

Design

The SweetNight Coolnest Hybrid is a 16.50″ (according to the product page it’s supposed to be 16.0″, but ours measured 16.5″) memory foam hybrid mattress that comes in a single firmness option—Medium-Firm. It is a high-profile memory foam hybrid mattress with a pillow top cover.
